I don't think any one is accusing him of not knowing basketball, but rather not being able to teach/coach basketball.5 points

I like what I am seeing in the recruiting / transfer column. Some good gets. I am thinking the win column sees at least 8.4 points

These kids didn't magically forget to do the things that broight them acclaim and that they were doing for THIS school just LAST year. That's a far far bigger reach than conceding that the only variable that has changed, an unproven head coach, is the culprit. Look, I get it. Condemning Benford is indirectly condemning the man that chose him. And, for whatever reason, you can't stomach that.4 points

With respect...no one is upset with someone's generosity. We're upset that the product on the floor has forced their hand.4 points

Canales is recruiting hard and has landed two big JUCO players in the last week.3 points

Also, one more point regarding the question of why we are bringing in another offensive tackle. Please note that tackles must be taller, athletic players with long arms to fend off the pass rush, so you can't just stick any good lineman at tackle. You rarely see Division-1 tackles shorter than 6'4". Manu's film shows that he has a strong upper body to go along with long, strong arms, although he could use some help in footwork and keeping his head out and prevent from lunging at the incoming pass rusher (things you can easily coach up). Good given long arms, strength, and not to mention the guy looks nasty on film, so I think he is a solid addition. Right now we may only have 3 true scholarship tackles on our roster in 6'5" Junior Antonio Johnson (2-year returning starter), 6'4" Senior LaChris Anyiam (returning co-starter), and 6'5" RS Freshman Connor Trussell. I'm not sure about 6'5" tackle Grant Shaw since he wasn't on the spring weight-chart that we saw released before the semester ended, but there's a possibility that he may not be on the team anymore. Also, heading into spring Justin Manu will fill out our two-deep at tackle with legitimate scholarship players. Then in the fall, once our 3 freshman offensive lineman arrive, we will be able to pick and choose which of them will be better suited for tackle and not have to rush any of them into action. The good news is they are all listed at either 6'4" or 6'5" so they have the potential to be versatile and help out at different spots along the line.3 points

I definitely see a team leader on the floor for every game. His name: Roger Franklin. As for the outside shooters, we have Overlander, Holmen, Niko, Mitchell, and Jordan can hit the 3 (when he has a good look). Now, why aren't the shots falling? I dunno. I think a big problem with the team in watching the play on the floor is that our guys cannot penetrate the lane when in a half-court game. In transition: it's Jones all day, and if Jordan is out in front of him, it's going to be explosive. If Mitchell is anywhere in the picture, it's going to be explosive. But our transition offense is almost non-existent this year except against the vastly inferior teams. The million-dollar question: Why can't they penetrate and make plays in the paint in a half-court set? Are they being coached how to do this in Benford's system and not executing? Are they not being coached how to do this effectively in Benford's system? I'm no basketball coach, but it seems like if we have a PG as effective as Jones, and a big as incredible as Mitchell, we can employ high pick-&-rolls/pops to be very potent... right? I don't see a whole lot of that.3 points

when you consider how long it takes to get a player to this level of experience, all the time paying for a ship, this is a real bargain.3 points

He has never been listed as a commit on rivals. His coaches haven't updated it and we don't have anyone actively running our rivals page. Don't worry, he's still with us.3 points

Think i haven't seen this one linked yet http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2012/12/breaking-news-unt-lands-louisville-transfer.html/ sounds good. Particularly because this is a player who does not come because he could not have stayed where he was, instead he comes because he was smart enough to graduate early. There should be respect for that kind of thing.2 points

Starts tonight, followed by road games at the 2 best teams in our conference, MTSU and WKU. Really need to win 2 of 3 in this stretch, with both conference road games being the preference. If we come out of this without a win, that would leave us in a 0-3 hole in conference and the confidence of this team basically broken. I wouldn't expect much the rest of the year if this happens. Biggest 3 game stretch in the history of man? Question. Lots of info.2 points

I wonder if he is referencing Chico's time at USF, as the time he was recruited by Chico?2 points

We could have at least 2 legitimate D1 scholarship worthy players competing for each spot on the OLine? That can't be a bad thing. Now, do the same at all the other positions.2 points

A CHL and a brief "training" for teachers how to shoot the bad guy has "failure" written all over it. Military, Police, even armed Security Guards are trained to deal with an intruder. Teachers are not. It is sad that kids have to go through the same thing as airline travelers do to get into school. Medal detectors (yes kids do bring weapons to school), x-ray machines for backpacks...if that is what it takes to keep kids safe in school, our school taxes just went up.2 points

Agree with you about Franklin. If a few others would work as hard as he does and play with the emotion that he does, we would be seeing an entirely different season unfolding in front of our eyes. Also think there are a couple of others, Overlander being one, who bust their rears every time they get on the court. A little more of that from a copuple of the others and this team not only beats Lehigh but goes on a big time run. Will it happen? Let's see what having a few NBA scouts and GM's in the house will do for the levl of play this evening....should be an interesting test for this team. Keeping all fingers and toes crossed here.....Big night for the Mean Green. Looking firward to seeing a breakout game from the "good guys"!2 points

I like this pickup. I think CBL boiled it down nicely. We're getting a guy who at least can contribute on ST, if not elsewhere on the field (player), has graduated before his eligibility is up (smart), and has played 3 years on a good Big East team (experience).2 points

Not who I had in mind. I suppose that every generation of North Texas fans could offer up their own opinion on this. In MY opinion, the answer would be Sears Woods ( a 1975 transfer from a small Okla school) #20 on your program. He was the team leader for all purpose yards that year (816). Not impressive numbers, but the most important of the "all purpose yards" was his kick-off return for a TD that won the Tennessee game for us. I think about him every time I hear a coach talking about how so-and-so made (or needs to make) a big play.2 points

Good god. Harry, is there anyway to get a forum specifically dedicated to conference realignment? I know many like to discuss it, but it makes going through the football forum and trying to find threads actually dedicated to UNT football an @ss whoopin. Just an idea.2 points

Now matter how he ends up counting against our scholarship allotment, I like the pick up. We're bringing in an apparently smart, mature and motivated player from a 10-2 Big East team about to go play in the Sugar Bowl. If nothing else, he'll add experienced depth and help out on our suspect special teams...and costs him a scholarship for just one season.2 points

I predict many people will show up because they were given free tickets. I predict the athletic department will trumpet it as a success. And I predict those people will never be seen again.2 points

We all know why the secret santa is donating tickets right... its a last minute write off for his taxes all jokes aside, nice gesture hope we can actually get a crowd there2 points

If this team doesn't turn it around and soon, I think some folks here might be a bit surprised at the make-up of the team for next season...just sayin....and, that new make-up will not include a new HC. Just speculating, but it seems pretty obvious to me.2 points

You're kidding, right? After he was fired, Trilli's talent transferred to the Big 12 where the PG led the conference in scoring and 2 others made it to the final 4 as meaningful players at UT and OSU. Trilli couldn't coach, but he definitely could recruit.2 points

I am not the least bit concerned with this kid's playing time (or lack thereof) at Louisville. He's a one year player who you get to roll the dice on for free. If he's good enough to hold down the SS spot...good. If he's able to be a situational nickel or dime DB...good. If all he ever does is improve your special teams...good. There can be no real down side here, even if he just pushes your starters in practice.2 points

This is why I always think that the SBC run we had from 2001-2004 was not considered anything special by the outside college football world. Dickey had 4 straight championships and couldn't even get a sniff as a head coach anywhere else above here. I'm still convinced that he thought he would move upwards after that 2003 or 2004 season. Not surprisingly, our recruiting went back down very quickly from where it had managed to get in the years before. A coach who pulled off what Andersen just pulled off, at a school like Utah State, even if it was against a conference that was not highly regarded, should be getting looks from the bigger teams. We have seen it happen big time now at Arkansas State and Western Kentucky and Louisiana Tech. But, for many reasons, it never happened here with Dickey--and it appears that the rest of the college football world knew what they were looking at, since he has never been hired again as a head coach anywhere. I think these ADs know that an offense like his and a personality like his would never bring in the attendance or $$$ in the way that you hoped a new hire would do.2 points

Did I miss some news about Dajon Williams? Rivals no longer shows him as a commitment, and we aren't listed anymore as having offered. ESPN shows him as still committed to us though. I could be reading things wrong, but I thought we had him at one point and he was rated a 3 star.1 point

I asked for two extras via the web link, but can't make it up to apogee. I appreciate the generosity, but I wish I could have just printed out my tix, or have been sent a barcode that can be pulled up on my phone and then scanned at the door. Little things like this help. Kram before you jump on this, let it be known I'm not complaining just trying to make a small point and maybe someone who matters can pass along this little tip and usher NT into the modern era.1 point

Yes, he is high school class of 2010, which would mean this is his third year of college. One redshirt year and two years of playing JUCO ball, so he should be a two years to play two season guy.1 point
