".,people see the team...people might just come back and buy tickets" Hahahahahaha10 points

Once again, one mans generousity, and it was his idea, not the athletic department, has been made a joke by people on this board. People doing everything in their power to make things better at this place, including opening their checkbooks, and you guys finding a way for unselfish giving to be bad. THIS PROMOTION HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH ONE DONOR WANTING HIS BELOVED ALMA MATER TO LOOK GOOD AND TO SHOW THE KIDS ON THIS BASKETBALL TEAM THAT SOMEONE HAS THEIR BACK AND BELIEVES IN THEM. And if they just keep shooting the basketball, some of us fans have faith that the shots will start falling, and if they keep improving and playing hard, then they will start winning games. And the belief that just maybe if our kids put it together, albeit a considerable long shot, and we get some people in the building that may have not come otherwise, then they might come back and make this place one of the most difficult places to play in the country because it is loud and full during conference play. These are all ridiculous and stupid ideas. Imagine if we get on a roll, and win some new fans, and then the students come back in mid January, how much fun it will be. I will be there regardless of what happens, cussing losses, celebrating wins and singing the alma mater after the game. I am very proud of someone that I consider a friend, "The Tasty Greek" taking somewhat of a high road on all of this even though I know HE MUST BE ABOUT TO BLOW, but except for the occasional jab and good humor, and I may be wrong about this, he has not publicly stated that one of the hardest working and most accessable athletic directors in the country needs to be fired, or that the basketball coach needs to be fired. Why not just bring 4 of your friends to the game. Tell them what it is. Two potential future NBA draft picks on the same court in Denton Texas. One of the teams beat Duke last year to advance in the NCAA tournament. It was only the 6th or 7th time in history that a 15 seed upset a 2 seed.6 points

Something something fire RV, run Mac out of town on a rail, and perform unspeakable favors for Leech with a pirate hat. Mario Cristobal was fantastic at FIU. Leavitt is almost a stunt hire like Schnellenberger at FAU. Eh, (toys with monocle and spiky hat) I know nuhssing!4 points

Mac is certainly making solid (so they appear) additions on the JUCO front. I also like the Louisville addition at Safety. Let's hope that Pegram, Terrell, and Berglund also live up to their billing, and we could be in for big things next year. But, it still appears that Mac is gambling on his high school talent. Probably because his hand is being forced by good players not wanting to come here. If his gambles turn out to be busts, then be ready for another influx of JUCO guys again next year, and every year, until we win enough to attract good high school talent. This is a fine line to walk, because, as we learned with Dodge, too many JUCO guys and not enough high school guys slowly kills the roster.3 points

Another good looking juco recruit. I really like the way Bellazin finished last year and McCoy, who had an off year likely because of injuries, should have a big sr year. With Mason, Delonga, Watson and Horton also available, de could become an area of strength. I hope this uptick in recruiting continues.3 points

I think it's a fine promotion...I've thought for years that giving away tickets for certain games would do wonders for buoying attendance. However...at the beginning of the season the Lehigh game was billed as the top game at the Pit...2 NBA players going head-to-head for two of the top Mid-Major programs in the country. The product on the floor...at least on one side...has no longer made that billing accurate. Whether the AD initiated it or it was pure generosity on the part of the donor, the fact remains this move was done to avoid/salve what would have been an embarrassing turn-out. Had this team...even remotely...lived up to expectations, giving away tickets for this game would set a Pit attendance record. Instead I'll set the over/under at 4500...and take the under. And that fact is the source of the frustration.3 points

http://hawaiiathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=11560 Signed with Hawaii after his 1st Juco season, didn't meet all transfer requirements. Had 40 tackles and 8 sacks in 8 games his first season.3 points

People have seen and heard about this team, that's why we have to give away tickets.3 points

I think they should give away replica jerseys. That way we can all sub into the game and keep our players fresh for conference.3 points

Multiple sources within the UNT athletic department confirmed this afternoon that Louisville defensive back and former Segoville standout Zed Evans is in the process of transferring to UNT to use his final year of eligibility. Evans will play in the Sugar Bowl and then join the Mean Green in time for spring practice. Evans will graduate before leaving Louisville, which will allow him to be eligible immediately at UNT. read more: http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/2012/12/breaking-news-unt-lands-louisville-transfer.html/2 points

I am not the least bit concerned with this kid's playing time (or lack thereof) at Louisville. He's a one year player who you get to roll the dice on for free. If he's good enough to hold down the SS spot...good. If he's able to be a situational nickel or dime DB...good. If all he ever does is improve your special teams...good. There can be no real down side here, even if he just pushes your starters in practice.2 points

Take it FWIW, when I picked up tickets at 1, they were sold out of the lower bowl. Not sure if that means sold out of the promotional tickets, which seems to be in the baseline reserved areas, or sold out of everything, but people there picking up tickets were being given upper bowl tickets. People still have to actually show up, but it would be cool to have a nice crowd, and even cooler to see some good basketball out of the good guys.2 points

Never underestimate the ability of some to make lead out of diamonds! If ever there is even the slightest way, the "usual suspects" here on GMG.Com will make it so..... Thanks to Flyonthewall for letting folks know that the "secret Santa" is indeed paying for the tickets...so, while the folks who take the guy up on his generous offer get a free ticket, the ticket has been paid for by the "Secret Santa". I hope I run into "Secret Santa" at the game so I can tell him thank you! Here's hoping the guy has to pay up for a bunch of tickets...great to hear that perhaps a thousand or more have already been picked up.....THANK you Santa for being part of the solution. Please understand that the majority of members of the Mean green Nation appreciate your generosity!2 points

Based on our small time donor base, we might be more like the 30,000 millionaire. We have borrowed the money to buy the flashy new car (apogee) and clawed our way into a new conference (even though the existing memebers seem to not want us) and now expect everyone to tell us how great we are and put us on the A list.2 points

I am guessing that Mac did not want to sign many jucos his first couple of years because they would be gone by years 3 and 4. He is now willing to add some so they can help be an impact in years 3 and 4, plus provide someone to fill a hole in the first couple of recruiting classes that are still not ready. I don't see it as a panic move at all, and is consistent with what he said he would do at the end of the season. Is signing a few, what appear to be quality, juco players really a negative?2 points

OU just got a commit from a JUCO DT. Word is that the offer is still out to Walker, though. Tightens up the numbers, hopefully.2 points

Losing the starting C and an OT. Mac signs a JUCO OT and C. People throw fits. This isn't about Mac's recruiting classes. It's about those BEFORE that and the lack of relative depth. It's about experience and size along the lines. It's about competition.2 points

Both Boutwell and Lincoln were recruited and signed as defensive ends. Boutwell only weighed 225 when he signed and sat out a year to get up to 250 or so. Because he was the best defensive lineman we had he was moved to DT. He has finally gotten his weight up to 272 but he still gives away 20 to as much as 50 pounds to the guy blocking him. As a result he has had several injuries. He might have been one of our best strongside defensive ends but he took one for the team and played tackle. Lincoln at least weighed 255 when signed so he, too, was placed at tackle. He has some quickness and strength but even now he only weighs 266, not exactly what you need to face 300+ beasts on the other side. Abbe had the size, but little else, when converted from offensive line play in high school. I hope and pray that Wallace and McDorman will give us improvement at defensive tackle. Both were defensive tackles in high school so at least they're used to playing inside. So was Micah Thompson. I hope that they form the core of defensive tackle with some help from Abbe and maybe Boutwell and Lincoln in certain situations.2 points

The main difference is track record. At this point last year, we had a coach that had five straight 20 win seasons, two NCAA appearances in that time, and the best 5 year stretch in NT history record wise. Of course you would not want to fire that coach. Right now, we have a first year coach with no skins that has just shown that so far he can not get a very talented team to perform up to the level that he set for this team. Have we been spoiled by the last few years? I would say I have. Do I hope Benford turns it around? Absolutely. I hope we are looking back at the start of this season chuckling, because we have won another Sun Belt Tournament and are figuring out who we are going to be playing in the Big Dance.2 points

So we have the worst athletics program of the 4 metroplex schools at this point? So depressing. The only thing missing is a baseball team that could then lose to UT-Dallas.2 points

Mr. Sunshine. no matter what unless someone disagrees with you. If giving away free tickets, is a promotion; it is a lame one. Economic justification, as you have attempted, does not work. How many people that won't spring for a $7 ticket are going buy big amounts of anything. Probably only those that would have came anyway and bought tickets if they couldn't have got them for free. As far as people liking what they see and coming back as paying customers, it seldom happens. What does happen if you do this type of "promotion" too many times is that your product is cheapened and people who actually have been buying tickets wonder why. No I don't see this as a promotion or a thanks to supporters. It is more an attempt to not be embarrassed by bad attendance for a much ballyhooed game. . I would be happy if it added thousands to the attendance, but I doubt this ticket give away has any real effect.2 points

Our last year of D1AA we played Boise State in the playoffs and we were in the top 14 teams. I was on that team and you have no idea what you are talking about. GL2GREATNESS, your rants are ridiculous and epic in length. No one bothers reading this nonsense.2 points

I'm sitting here reading all of these coaching hires happen and I have this feeling that the college football programs of the world are passing us by. Western Kentucky getting Bobby Petrino? Arkansas State getting Brian Harsin? REALLY? It's almost like a game of bingo, and everyone else is calling bingo, but you. You need B5 and they are calling everything around it!! Am I crazy???? This is one of those years that an AD could only dream of - the movement that's happening and the folks at high profile programs willing to take jobs at non-BCS schools. I know we are not in the market for a new coach, but it kinda makes you think -- what if? Just my two cents for the day!!1 point

I've been thinking the same about Thompson. Mac has already said he wants to look at position changes, so changing back to the position for which they were recruited kinda makes sense. We need Thompson to contribute somewhere.1 point

I don't see why any team would view a move to the Big East as a good move. There is nothing stable about it. You know that UCONN and Cincy are on the first plane out of town. And once the TV deal is done then Boise and SDSU will have the chance(and they will) to go back to the MWC.1 point

I think both of those options will fall through. Cincy and UConn will jump at the chance to join the ACC. And Memphis, Houston, and SMU in the western group??? Hah!1 point

UNTEXAS is correct. I'm going to put you up there with Andrew and Skiver for the douche of the year award. I will let you know the winner later.1 point

I think I read the first sentence of the last paragraph and that was not even correct. We were ranked a number of times in D1aa. Either way, try to be a little more concise so people will take the time to read some of what you write.1 point
