3. Something like that happens to a schlub office worker like me, I get fired, get an arrest record, and it follows me around other job interviews for life like a case of herpes. Conviction or dismissal doesn't matter. The arrest is enough. Now, a star athlete? We stand behind him. Innocent until proven guilty. Back in practice on Monday. Gotta love our societal priorities and equality for all justice system. Not meant to pick on these two kids. It just always strikes a bit of a nerve with me when athletes get such a wide berth with legal matters. See also Cowboys dude who just drunkenly killed his teammate.

  4. I live in Newtown. This is utterly devastating. The entire community is numb and in shock. All the schools were in lock down for several hours. My daughters were at two different schools. One was in gym class and they ushered them all into a storage room, locked the doors and turned out the lights. She spent over two hours in complete darkness - the kind of darkness where you can't see your hand in front of your face. They had no idea what was going on until they were finally let out. Just a horrific day for our town. Say prayers for the families.

  6. Makes it sound like the name stays with the football schools. I disagree with you though. I think if the FB schools keep the Big East name, or brand, they will do fine. The Big East name will still mean something to the uninformed fans who do not analyze this stuff like we do.

  7. The thing that I know about thieves is that they are thieves. Very few ever truly stop being thieves. Unfortunately these two happen to play football at the University of North Texas. Just because 2 out of approx. 125 kids in the football program did this does not mean that our program is bad, or that we are recruiting bad kids, or no one has control of said kids. There are still approx. 123 other kids in the football program that did not get arrested that day for stealing clothing at the golden triangle mall, and hundreds and hundreds more athletes that play golf, tennis, basketball, softball, run track etc. that did not get caught stealing at the golden triangle mall. To me this is not even newsworthy. Just two dumb college kids that got caught stealing.

  8. Have to agree with you here. There are plenty of students who are trying to get by in college, but when you are a piece to a puzzle at a university that brings in so much attention and money, a bone can be thrown IMO. On a more positive note: If people follow Brock Berglund on twitter, he is giving a toy to a child in need for xmas for every new follower.

  9. This is a terrible story and incident that will impact these guys for the rest of their lives. Some of us make bad decisions....some of us are just bad...some come from a bad situation. I do not know where these boys fall, and I hope the get what is coming to them. But I have a thought that is very compelling. A few years ago the NCAA denied "walking around" money for student athletes...Believe they were talking about 2000.00 per year. There are several arguments on this issue...1st, they are getting their education free vs. other students that are paying for theirs. 2nd, if the family does not have the means to give their student / athlete an allowance, what is the student / athlete do for money? During the season, I know they are very busy and have a schedule that I would be hard pressed to keep up with when you factor in practice, film, tutoring, classes. These boys have no time for a part time job when other students do. Personally, I am in favor of this "walking around" money and it is not because of my perspective. Think of the money wasted buying out coaches contracts, paying exit fees to a conference that you no longer want to be in....NCAA has money, are they allocating it properly???

  10. So tired of people making excuses for these athletes because they're just "kids". Everyone at the age of 19 knows its morally wrong and illegal to steal. I love Jimmerson as a player, but we can't cut him slack because he's good at football.

  17. The only mistake they made was getting caught. They knew they were stealing. That's why they tried to cover up their theft by stuffing the loot in a backpack. That's the definition of a thief. One that steals. These thieves embarrassed me this morning. These thieves play for my University. Kick them off the team and maybe the other football players at the University of North Texas will notice and not become thieves themselves.

  18. Agree that NCAA needs to set better rules and follow them more accurately and ethically. Boise is one of the main schools holding BEAST football together right now...but the TV contract isn't going to be anywhere close to what they were promised. There's still a good chance that they pull out along with SJSU and further decrease the value of the conference. If that happens though, I imagine SMU, Houston, and other "old CUSA" schools will still scratch and claw to stay together as the BEAST conference. There's no way they're willing to deflate their egos a little bit and re-join a geographically relevant conference that would be better for their programs in the long haul.

  21. Which shows Skiver's, oh, I mean Andrew's, complete lack of college basketball knowledge. I don't need to know what you do for a living, Skiv... I mean Andrew. What you post on here tells me everything I need to know.

  22. He signs a 10 year deal at 25 years old then he'll only be 35 when his contract ends. At that point you can assess his worth but I think when it's all set and done Elvis could be here what Jeter is in NY. Not comparing the two completely but Elvis has a chance to be something great and legendary here. He became a leader type player when he came onto the scene at just 20. People forget he's only 24 years old.

  23. Simple. 1-2 game suspension this time, with the warning that if they have another brush with the law, they're gone.

  24. See Casey Fitzgerald and Whataburger. He was a successful college football athlete that held down a job by choice.

  25. It was shocking to see but I have no issues of letting Hamilton go if they sign Elvis his 10+ year contract. There is no reason whatsoever Elvis shouldn't be the face of this franchise and wear one uniform his whole career here. And don't say Scott Boras is his agent because he's also Beltre's agent.

  26. These players should be punished. i can't say how severe it should be, but they broke the law and they represent UNT athletics and UNT football. With great power, comes great responsibility...to whom much was given, of him much will be required... UNT gave these guys an opportunity to represent the university, and they made a mistake. Because they are athletes, it became news where if a regular student would have done it, it would have been a slap on the wrist and they would have been able to move on. One game is not enough in my opinion. Not sure if they should lose their scholarship either, but if i had to pick one or the other, it would be loss of scholarship. I'm sorry. We can come up with all the excuses, but there are thousand of athletes that do not get caught breaking laws too. there are thousands more athletes that did not get the opportunity these two got. Man up. Whatever punishment UNT gives them, they deserve it. They knew the risk and got caught.

  29. I don't get this. Here's a coach that's 16 games over .500 for his career and is a bad hire when compared to a first-time FBS coach, a FCS coach with an excellent record over only three years and a great coach with so much excess baggage he'd have to hire a cargo plane to fly along. PS..Skip has been successful at two schools, Connecticut and East Carolina and was also successful his first year at South Florida.

  30. Age has something to do with it as well. There's a difference between a kid in college and someone already out of school working. And I'm pretty sure Josh Brent is facing a lot of time behind bars.

  36. Really wish the media would stop identifying the shooters in these instances. In a society that teaches it's young that everything is about getting your 15 minutes of fame, this only provides a path for the mentally unstable to get their 15 minutes. We don't need to know a name, especially if the shooter is dead.

  37. From an objective observer (Red Sox fan) Short term...the Rangers will suffer a bit...especially if Profar, Martin, Olt et al aren't big league ready, but there is still solid rotation options and productive hitters and a manager who can play AL small-ball. Long term... When will Mike Trout need to get done? Just take the money you've wisely saved by not making a Hamilton panic buy, scoop Trout up when the Angels are saddled with these awful contracts in a few seasons.

  39. A Class B misdemeanor. If they plead no contest they'll very likely face probation and a bit of community service. Seeing as this website tells us nothing about how this transpired I'll reserve preparing the gallows. Which is not to say this is excusable.

UTSA is an upgrade over nothing.

UTSA is an upgrade alone in the fact that NT gets exposure in a market that doesn't even know where NT is. That, and I get to see the Mean Green play in SA. UTSA gets a hell of a lot of attention here. I'm not jazzed about being in a conference with them either, but belly aching about it now is pointless.

  41. If we get good Nellie Cruz we'll be fine. If we get bad Nellie Cruz and uppercut Kinsler we're on big trouble. I'm oddly excited about a full season of everyday Murph Dog at bats.

  42. Simple answer. And I think you are dead on here. Thee is no way in hell these schools will come back. The NCAA views UNT, MTSU, FIU, FAU, UTSA, UNCC, and, to a lesser extent (because they have more money) ODU, as third class citizens and will not make the others associate with us. There will be a new conference and a waiver by the NCAA.

  43. Well, put me in the camp that thinks this was what was going to happen, and that the Rangers will be fine. I liked Josh's bat...when it was in the line up and when he wasn't in some funk like at the end of the year. But, what i have seen is a great hitter whose body is beginning to give out on him due to years of abuse. he wanted this long term contract and he got it, but i do think you will see the Angles "stuck" with that long term deal and a player who cannot stay in the lineup. Josh is one slip-up away from imploading, and that is not something I would want to risk that sort of $$ and that many years on...good for the Angels, but I think this is a good deal for the Rangers. Pitching wins in this game. Rangers need pitching, not a long term deal for mega-millions with Josh. Will the Rangers miss his bat...oh, sure, but would this have been a good deal for the rangers? Nope...and I don't think it's a good deal for the Angels. They signed Pujols to a long term deal as well...don't know how that will work out either, but he is an aging slugger as well. Lots of money and long term deals. I predict some dumping of players and contracts by the Angels in the next couple of years. The Angels better win this next year or the "big deals" will catch up with them. Sorry to see Josh go...loved the guy, but good for the Rangers.

  44. Napoli got a silly big contract. MY had to go to make room for Profar. Josh and his chicken s attitude needed to be removed from the room. It sucks that Josh went to the Angels.... But that quitter needed to go.
    1 point
  45. Eh, I don't. Hamilton really was not as big an asset to us these past two years as people think. Napoli will be a bigger loss but even he didn't have a great year. Good production for a catcher though. And Michael Young had one of the worst offensive seasons of any everyday position player in the AL last year. Giving him at bats just because he was Michael Young was getting really old to me. We'll be fine. Yu is starting to establish himself as one of the best pitchers in baseball. He misses more bats than almost any other pitcher. Profar could be a ROY candidate and Beltre was by far our best offensive player last year, so we'll just have to wait and see.

  46. There is no realistic greener pasture for UNIT to aspire at this time, which means I can sit back, laugh my ass off at the CUSA/MWC defectors and watch them scurry about trying to save face. We've got our spot at what, worst case, is the kiddie table, best case, becomes the teen table. All I know is I have a chair and I wanna eat! Oh, and I hope SMU ends up as an independent playing Idaho four times a year.

  48. Excellent news! Thanks, Dozer. I am very proud of our student athletes, and the emphasis our coaches are placing on academics. This was not always the case at UNT, and it is now something we can ALL be very proud to be associated with.
