  1. Dude, how dumb are you? These are 18-21 year old kids who have played the game at a high level of competition for a maximum of 4 or 5 years. Maybe you are also 19 or 20, but guess what, that absolutely doesn't make you a "Grown ass man". And you are basketball stupid. Someone had to say it.

  5. I'm sorry Andrew I don't know who you are and I'm not trying to attack you personally, but you really don't have a clue if you think we can sit here and "enjoy UNT basketball," in it's current form. It's just not fun to watch, be it the coach's fault or the players. Especially when what has taken years to built is not being torn apart brick by brick, but by a swift push of the dynamite plunger. We just have to disagree. I'm am glad you don't take NT sports as seriously as some. I guess I have to get to the point so many alums have figured out, forget about it all and abandon the program. It sure make life easier not having to worry about how one's donation dollars and ticket dollars are spent. I hope this thing turns around. I really do and I'm sincere in saying I hate to see people lose their jobs, unless its because unscrupulous things have been done, which I can't say things haven't been shady. I really do for the players' sake.

  11. According to this thread, I just may be basketball smart. Anyways, I would guess that several players who are counted on still have the AAU bug. No urgency, and no understanding of the traditional authority of a coach. Team hasn't jelled obviously. Oh no, it might take harder work than anticipated. and, maybe the star player webpage that leads this forum can take a powder til a double double arrives. I don't care how much buzz TM has created, there are holes in his game that are easy to take adv. of. If he can get 1 shot in 9 minutes, he needs to whip some ass on his own team. That kid is no where near professional level with the little things. So maybe tap the breaks on the superman stuff. it may take him longer for his bb iq to catch up with his talent.Lights go on for some at different times--These guys need to compete. There's a reason some are so open-they need to be wise enough to realize it and not give in. + if anyone even acts like they arent all in this quick, Coach does have to locate that.

  13. It wasn't broken until he broke it. I wouldn't have dreamed Tony would have 0 offensive touches 9 minutes iinto a game against a conference opponent. This has A LOT to do with the coach. It may not be over, but we will be 3-6 after the butt whoopin that is coming in 2 days, and we have very little chance to beat Lehigh at home. LaLa beat us on our own court. So I would say it is far closer to being over than being turned around, considering defensive, rebounding, and to a certain extent, offensive problems have not been fixed. Couple that with the fact that Benford doesn't even know who or when he will substitute next from second to second, and I just have a terrible feeling this thing is headed for 12 wins. I'm not saying Benford should be fired just yet, but it is really clear to see that he was a terrible hire for this situation, no matter how bad your vision may be.

  20. 5 years is a very normal contract for a head coach, just for recruiting purposes as previously mentioned. I have no problem with that contract, nor the pay. I just have a major problem with paying that out to an unproven assistant. I liked Fran Fraschilla a lot as a name coach. I would have gone hard after Shields at UALR or Marlin at ULL. I would've at least talked to Scott Cross. All of these guys have one thing in common--they have been successful head coaches. Benford and Trilli were nothing more than unproven assistants at big name schools that are easy to recruit to. Again, I go back to this reality. When you make a hire of this magnitude, in either football or basketball, you had better be right or it screws an athletic department like ours much worse than it does a big AQ school or a cash school like TCU or SMU. I think RV has done a great job as a cheerleader for our teams and for working to make gameday better. But his money sport hires have been mediocre (Coach Mac and Aston--only because she was here for 1 year) to downright awful (Stephens, Dodge, and Benford so far). And if this turns out to be awful, like it has started out, it should be enough to cause a change at the top of the AD. We are stuck with Benford, no matter what happens, for at least two more years after this. But this is, without a doubt, the biggest swing and miss of a head coach hire that UNT has had since they hired Bob Tyler to be the head coach of a program that had Fry's great success and then Jerry Moore's decent teams in 1981. We haven't ever a team since then that was so promising to bring major success to the university like this was supposed to be. It won't surprise me one bit if Johnny Jones becomes our basketball-version of Hayden Fry. Its just so typical of North Texas athletics.

  21. Like Harry said earlier in the post, I'm still behind Tony Benford cause he's the coach of UNT BB and it's too early. Now the early results are bad and things need to change quickly or the most talented team in UNT BB history will make headlines as the biggest bust in UNT history. However, what I'm most disappointed in is our defense and rebounding. These two stats are about want-to and athletes. We've been told this would be a priority, but have not seen any evidence to confirm this. It's not that we don't have the athletes to defend and rebound, so what's the problem? Defense wins games for you when you're not making shots. Rebounding gives you second chance points when you're not making shots and limits oppenents opportunities when they miss. It also allows you to run the floor and fast break which is what this team needs to be doing. He can blame the poor shooting, but in my mind it's not about that - have I mentioned it's rebounding and defense?

  22. I remember that when Mac had Seneca Walace and Sage Rosenfels at Iowa State, he had wide open offenses, even if they still ran the ball a lot. BTW, I still believe that running the ball should be your strength. Its just that when you have a QB who cannot be trusted to make solid throws consistently is just too much of a liability. When I think back to our "glory years in the SBC", Scott Hall might not have been able to throw it much, but when he did, he was accurate. His pass-action plays were usually very effective. Since he left, we have seen Meager, who just didn't have it (even with that amazing game at 1-11 SMU that year) as a starting QB (DT is most like Meager, I think), Vizza, who could've been great here, but his timing was messed up with Dodge's inept system, Riley, who was a gamer, but was just too small to be a QB at this level, and then DT. For every year before this one, the QB wouldn't have made any difference in us being a bowl team or not because we have had so many depth issues, but this is the year that QB play really stood out as being the difference between a bowl season and 4-8. If the DT who played at K-State had shown up for SBC play, then we would've won at least 7 games, in my opinion. That's why Berglund makes me so excited for next season. He COULD be the answer we have been looking for at that position for a long time. Imagine an offense with Jimmerson and Berglund--I think Canales would be able to get back to the wide-open play calling that we saw from him at the end of 2010 with those guys. He needs a QB that can play and a RB that can break away, like he had with Dunbar.

  23. Really because I saw an offense in the red zone fail to execute on 5 or 6 different drives, further I saw balls overthrown by 20 feet plus, receivers drop balls, and more. To top it off I did not see Troy's Defense creating the problem, we were doing it to ourselves. Yes when the Offense failed each time in the Red Zone the kickers also failed, but only after our offense kicked its own ass.

  34. And all the frustrating inconsistent play that included losses to teams we had no business losing to by Jones coached teams? It happens to everyone. Jones did good things here. Not taking that away, but he left on his own. Benford has stuff to learn that can only be learned by being the man. No question he will make some mistakes. As he said tonight, our defense must improve and our perimeter defenders have to stop playing Michael Finley swinging gate style defense. And we have to improve on 279th ranked shooting percentage. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink (or make a basket evidently). We are starting to get enough tape of these guys playing together to start showing them how freaking horrible they have been and how out of position they frequently are. If our 3 prima donnas played with half as much heart as Roger Franklin, this would be a moot point. If Benford's first recruiting class (so far) is any indication of the type of talent he can bring in here, we will be just fine, regardless of how this season turns out. Unlike many on here who have already jumped off, I happen to think we can still do good things this year.

  35. I wasn't trying to be funny on that one. There isn't anything funny about having the lowest RPI in the conference even when we probably have the most talent. We used to make fun of how other coaches did less with more. Now our coach is the butt of those jokes. That isn't funny, or fun.

  44. The least sexy thing about football is also the most important: the lines. Without an offensive line that can maintain a running game, you can't get by with an average or below average QB. Without a defensive line that can stop the run and put some pressure on the opposing QB without having to resort to run blitzes and passing blitzes, you'll never stop anyone with any regularity. I am absolutely in favor of going the JUCO route for the defensive line. Promising high school defensive lineman are some of the rarest of recruits, and very few of them end up available and/or interested in programs like ours. I'll be happier than anyone else around here if we can convert possible recruits like Romar, Vaenuku, and Thurman into actual Mean Green players, but these kids are usually the ones who end up going elsewhere. Even when you get promising HS d-linemen, they usually take a couple of years to develop into regulars. For the d-line, the JUCO route makes a whole lot of sense. On a related note, we've seen the blueprint Mac is going to use on the offensive side of the ball: Run it. Regardless of whether or not we like this, regardless of how much of a waste of Chico's play calling it might be, this is the offensive system the Mean Green will win and lose by as long as Mac is here. I'm excited to see what the combination of Pegram and Jimerson can do behind an offensive line who will have another year of experience under their belts except for Fortenberry, who will graduate. I'll be even more excited if Berglund turns out to be even an average passing QB, someone who can make opposing defenses at least occasionally honor the play action instead of laugh themselves silly at it. A decent passing threat + an experienced line + exciting backs = an offense that can do some damage.
