THEY'RE HIS F*{^|€NG PLAYERS. HE WAS BROUGHT IN TO COACH THESE PLAYERS. THESE PLAYERS WERE BETTER LAST YEAR UNDER A COACH THAT COACHED THEM. WE CAN EITHER BELIEVE THAT ALL OF THESE PLAYERS HAVE TURNED INTO BASKETBALL MORONS IN A SINGLE OFFSEASON OR THAT THE COACHING SUCKS BALLS. HOW UNLUCKY FOR BENFORD TO GET HIS BIG COACHING BREAK THE SAME SEASON THAT AN ENTIRE ROSTER OF PLAYERS MIRACULOUSLY LOST THEIR BASKETBALL ABILITY OVER SUMMER BREAK!!!!! WHAT ARE THE ODDS??????11 points

Contestant: I'll take "Disastrous Head Coaching Hires" for $2,000, Alex. Trebek: This university... (Buzzes in) Trebek: Wouldn't you like me to finish the answer. Contestant: That won't be necessary. Who is North Texas?7 points

Even if he knows what he's doing philosophy wise...a big part of coaching is getting your players to buy in. If he hasn't, then he's not a good coach.7 points

I heard five NT fans were attending. Strangely they all intend to walk around the perimeter of the building all night and never go inside.7 points

Benford not talking after these losses is a chickenshit move. People who want to complain about the players needing to take responsibility for these losses need only to look at the actions of the crappy coach setting the example for them.5 points

Just for the record, the administration is firmly in Benford's camp. I emailed a handful of them tonight with my concerns. RV called me tonight to talk to me about it. *shrug* At least they heard me and acknowledged the concerns I expressed. Thought ya'll may want to know. ***I edited the content after thinking more about it ... may not have been meant for public consumption.5 points

Dude, one or two typos ... we all understand, but you can't string together a coherent thought without multiple errors. It damages any credible thoughts you could communicate. Not that you are ... but if you did.5 points

Nope we have 10 fans going , but only 5 tickets. Don't worry , everyone will be rotating in a out of the stadium to make sure all 10 get to see the game an equal amount of time4 points

Players haven't played well , but I really find it hard to fault them when they are being pulled in and out every 30 seconds it seems. I don't see how they can get into any kind of rythm or build any team chemistry. If I were a recruit and saw this style I would never commit here , but that's just me.4 points

UNT.... Where sucking balls at everything is totally accepted! Lets give Benford an extension!!!!4 points

I'd love to hear what he has to say, too. But, he's too chickensh!t to come out and talk to UNT-paid staffers in the post-game show. Lack of heart, in addition to his lack of leadership. Pitiful.4 points

Anyone watch the Mean Green Insider this season? Mac says the same thing in the weekly interviews for the show. He does not believe in "moral victories."3 points

Ya, I don't know if you saw me yelling in game, but because of that I don't know if I'll be able to talk her into coming again. Funny "Women say the darnest things about sports" moment. About midway through the second half, she asked me what time it was. I told her 9 PM. She got this really concerned look on her face. I apologized for my vocalness and told her there wasn't much more of the game to go. She looked confused and then ask me "but aren't there 4 quarters?" Poor thing thought she had two and a half more quarters to endure... You should of seen the look of relief on her face when I told her there were 2 halves in college basketball, not quarters. Oh, and she left saying "That Roger Franklin is way better than that Tony guy."3 points

Don't worry. The students will be gone soon enough and you'll never have to hear foul words in the PIT again. What an ingenious plan by RV and that idiot Tony Benford. RUN OFF ALL THE STUDENTS WITH GARBAGE BASKETBALL AND YOU DON"T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT CUSSING!!!3 points

I love this. Basically the claim here is that CJ--who had a great game--is responsible for lack of production from Tony. I don't know if you've watched all the other games this season, but Chris Jones is the most willing guy on the team to sacrifice points for assists. If those plays had been there, he'd have made them. UNT was running high picks, but it was basically just a weave outside the point line. This is all on Benford. If this is the offense--which it appears that it is--then this will be a long painful season and probably the last that I buy season tickets to. This is the most talented team we've had in forever and we're 3 and 5. Would we be 3 and 5 if JJ were still coach... just think about it.3 points

You do realize that NT just got beat at home by a 2-5 team playing almost all freshmen and sophomores. Might add that a 6'9 freshman scored what 25 and looked a lot better than NT's lottery pick.3 points

I agree players aren't performing. So If the players aren't performing that would mean this team is better than they've shown and that they are not just a rag tag group of walk ons. So who's job is it to get results out of players who aren't performing? I say it's the coach. I grew up around a lot of coaches. My pops coached Bball, had several uncles and family friends who coached bball. Not every team my dad had contained a roster off all stars, in fact he had very few. But they won and they won a lot against teams they shouldn't have beaten, because of systems, game plans and expectations he put in players and the lessons about the game he taught them IN Practice. the fundamentals, how to shoot, rebound, break down defenders. Our team is young and are learning the game. It's the coaches job to teach what to do in his system. But so far I see nothing that shows me the current staff has a system. Some how JJ was able to get this same group to win even though they were young. If this team can't shoot, maybe they need to spend a practice session working on it. You want to compare things to the NBA? How much footage did you see of Dirk working with his coach on something as simple as backing up your defender and shooting a turnaround J? Somethings come down to basics. You can't force a system your team isn't built for. That's coaching. Making adjustments, that's coaching. Do players have to pull their weight absofreakinlutley, but to me it seems this team is lacking leadership and heart and that comes from the top as well.3 points

By that logic, the Lakers should not have fired Mike Brown, Andy Reid should keep his job, and Bobby V should not have been fired. Obviously those teams are just not as talented as people thought. Right? Nothing to do with coaching. Right? Sorry, but that just doesn't make sense. Coaches ruin very talented teams in almost every sport, every season. And now we are seeing it with this team. Awful.3 points

I went to the game. I left with 6:00 min. to go because I could tell we were going to lose, and did not want to watch it. - We do not block out. - We are confused on offense -- ex. Last possession of 1st half we wasted 20 of the 24 seconds trying to get set. Finally Jones forced a shot never able to pass to or receive a pick from a team mate. - Our defense seems content to run beside their man and not work to get in front of them. (ULaLa scored on an inbounds pass with one second left on the shot clock) I don't want to blame the coach, but last year with out Chris or Jordan we beat ULaLA at a neutral site and made it to the conference finals. This year, with them we lose at home to ULaLa at home. Remember what K State did to Alabama Huntsville after AHU beat us. Did you see what UT did to UTA? The same UTA that made us look horrible. Something is needs to change.3 points

In a year, we may not have the NBA lottery pick any more ... I don't think we can give him a year. He was handed an SBC-championship caliber team and has done sh!t with them, for one. For two, he's too big of a coward to simply walk out of the locker room to talk to the post-game radio show. Could I do a better job? Probably not, but I don't think I could do any worse. For one, if I were the head coach, I may draw up my own plays. Last game, apparently, Chris Jones was drawing up plays. Tonight, we saw one of the assistants drawing up at least some of them. The throw-in with three seconds left and down by two (or maybe three, I can't recall, we were within one score) ... his best playcall is a baseball pass down the court? Here's another, when Patton was getting hot, he pulled him out. When Tony was in foul trouble, he kept him in. When Tony was in foul trouble, instead of putting Keith or Nico in to help down low, he just subbed 'em in and out. Really? I'm a girl and I can call up at least a few things that he man is doing wrong ... not doing ... or doing poorly. Yelling 'shooter, shooter' over and over is not getting it done.3 points

Kram we shot 20-28 from the line. While 71% is not ideal, it is hardly bad. ULL shot 73% from the line. They missed seven...we missed eight. If you wanna say that we left too many points on the board, so did they.3 points

I hope we beat Texas because I've seen us do it before as a 1-AA program with even less compared to them than we do today, and ULM beat Bama just a few years ago with probably even less. I learned years ago, as many others here have also, that there's no reason to even field a team if you don't expect to win no matter who you line up against. Middle beat Georgia Tech this year, ULM beat Arkansas and on and on. Every year it happens. It can happen here too. Rick3 points

I was there tonight; first row, as always. I'm a three year season ticket holder and four years during school before that. Tonight was atrocious. Benford is completely inept. We were bad on offense, really bad... really, really bad. How can you not run one play, not one single play, for the best player on the floor; wait, on the team; wait, in the conference! Ridiculous. Then, how can you allow Jordan Williams to continue to let players glide past him to the basket causing Tony to get in foul trouble trying to defend the rim. On that note, how does Coleman play around two minutes when he could take over some of that rim defending and suck up some of those fouls. We also allowed nine threes. Oh, and we got whipped on the boards most of the night. At one point the margin was nine. It's just ridiculous. I'm a season ticket holder for Football and Basketball. I'm not rich. Honestly, I don't have much expendable income at all. Yet, I've chosen to spend my money on my alma mater in the hopes that they would use my small portion wisely. What do they do with that? Hire Todd Dodge, Dan McCarney and Tony Benford. RV must be held accountable.3 points

You get excited when a long-time assistant gets his shot, but sometimes you forget there maybe a reason they've been a long-time assistant.3 points

Funny how a lot of people were worried about Benford being a one and done like Karen Aston was here at UNT... guess we aren't worried about that anymore.2 points

You make solid points but at the end of the day none of that prevents you in doing your due diligence and doesn't give you an excuse not being able to hire coaches who are at least respectable in producing results. Other schools manage to do it every so often I don't see why NT cannot. Like I said that RV has done some nice things but his hires still need to be accountable because that is also a part of his job that he gets paid for. You don't have to hire expensive coaches to get the best coach to produce solid results.2 points
-
Embarrassing or not, we all need to get used to him, because they are not going to fire a coach here, in year 1. How long is his contract? Everyone should be upset with Rick - didn't he claim we would hire someone with head coaching experience?2 points
-
I am not sure if anyone can say he turns to the players for answers or has them draw up the plays. The assistant was probably Lundy and he is a great offensive coach from what I have read/seen. I understand we should be a lot better then this. Trust me. I want to be better then this. But like KRAM I believe the players need to be held accountable at least as much as Benford.2 points

I want him to help this team win. But right now he is pouting and getting frustrated. I would like to see Tony get a touch in the paint and hold the ball for a second and make a smart decision. You see this in the NBA with Kevin G. Or Dirk N. They catch the ball in/near the paint with their back to the basket. If they get doubled they pass it out. If not they make a one on one move. I have yet to see this from anyone but Roger on all team. We rush our decisions. You have 35 seconds and we we cannot even make an intelligent move. The last 25 seconds of the game sums this up. Jordan had a good look but Rogers put back was rushed. They needed to kick it out and play for the last shot to go to OT.2 points

How about nearly every time something goes wrong he turns around to the players on the bench like they have the answer?2 points

Bare cupboard, righted ship, four years, system in place. What an I missing? My daughter nailed it tonight on the drive home. She said, "I've figured out how to enjoy UNT sports. Just simply expect nothing and don't care. Then it's fun."2 points

Coaches are only judged on wins and losses It's not fair , but it's just the way the sports world works2 points

I'm talking about what actually happens during a game... so let's dismiss lack of preparation and other outside factors, even though these may be very important in winning or losing the game at hand. And let's also put aside the obvious here... your opponent is simply much better than you. A young coach asked an expert coach, "Our next opponent is better, bigger, taller, quick, plays great defense, with great shooters and ball-handlers, and they pass the ball well. What should I do?" The answer... "Lose". We're not talking about that here. Here we are discussing two fairly evenly matched teams, either of which could win the game. In a nutshell, here are the reasons we lost the game: Turnovers - Bad Decisions Bad Shots Lack of Defensive Pressure, Lack of Hustle Not Blocking Out, Not Rebounding Not Getting Back Defensively Stupid Fouls Failure to Play as a Team2 points

Yeah, I figured you would want to sit the guy who scored 23 points tonight and the future lottery pick...2 points

Might want to double check that...plenty of special teams coaches get canned for that.2 points

I talked up this team to anyone who would listen as well in an effort to get more people out to the games. Where is the puking emoticon?2 points

3.4 seconds on the clock and the best we can do is a baseball pass over Jacob's head?! Unless Benford was allowing CJ to draw up plays again that is on the coach.2 points

Ok, time to check my lottery numbers. I promise, if I win it all tonight, I'll donate $100k of the proceeds to a buyout. Hmmm, a man needs to be careful what he promises; (yes, I'm channeling Cap'n Call from "Lonesome Dove").2 points

He yells shooter and CJ cover and CJ just sits at the top. Wide open three knocked down. These players have no discipline. Coach evans got fired up a lot tonight and in players faces for lack of common of sense. The players are the issue. The only issue I see with Benford is he subs a lot more but the minutes were about the same under jones. Please explain what Benford did wrong tonight? How did he "mess it up"?2 points
-
Sorry, that would require him to actually participate in a post game interview after a loss. No accountability.2 points

I am indeed embarrassed. I can't tell you how many people I told over the summer when I was back home to look out for us this year in Basketball. And how Tony Mitchell was the easily a top 10 pick. I look like quite the fool now.2 points

UNTHC is advertising in Fort Worth since that is the community they serve and from where they make their money. Secondly, Presbyterian here in Denton is a major sponsor and I bet their agreement as such does not allow for another hospital to be a sponsor as well.2 points
