  1. The UTSA saga parallels very few programs in the country, certainly not ours. From afar, this is what seems different about UTSA vs my favorite team: School, from administration to athletic department to students, appears "all in." Large metropolitan city without a pro football team appears fully committed to supporting its school and the school's efforts to expose its product through athletics. Unlike Dallas (SMU) or Denton (UNT), UTSA is "San Antonio's (football) team." Fort Worth gets close with its support of a WINNING program, but SA fully committed up front. An aside: I suppose support for the basketball team is lacking at least in part because the Spurs are "San Antonio's (basketball) team. UTSA benefits from the "Waco effect." If NT were 50 or more miles further from Dallas, its past, present and future, from academics to athletics, would be totally different. When a city sees the school as one of its key reasons for being, and then fully commits resources to the goose that lays the golden eggs, all win. Examples: Waco, Lubbock. Simplistic...perhaps. We are what we are in Denton...under-supported, under-funded, under-achieving. Until North Texas and Denton decide to be something else, it is a misnomer to term this team, this university the "sleeping giant." All that said, I chose to attend North Texas (after a misguided detour through Austin). I graduated from North Texas. I love my school and my team. GMG

  2. *EDIT: I started this as a Skip Caldwell thread hence the title but it turned into a Mac Show highlights thread and forgot to change the title. Lost 13 scholarship players (seniors). Signing 20 this class. Will be the first time at the full 85. Gave out their ideal allocation for ships but I missed all of the exact numbers. At the end of the list he said they're leaving 2 scholarships slotted for "athletes." Doesn't care what side of the ball they're on - just looking for two exceptional guys who can make some serious game changing plays. Mentioned that they hope to have have 3-4 JUCO transfers in January. The way he phrased it made it sound like they were a package of some sort. Hopes to have much more depth and skill in 2013. Alluded that Berglund is really good but still in competition with Thompson and McNulty. Pegram has given defensive players 6-7 stingers throughout the fall in the scout team - good hard runner. Only two guys won't be back for spring practice - all other injured players will be back and ready to go. *George Perspective - McCarney is first coach since 70's to have 4 or more wins in each of his first two seasons. *Guest Fact - McCarney has two more wins in his first two seasons than Fry did Mac mentioned a "guy nobody really knows about yet" in Skip Caldwell. Said he came from Kentucky and is eligible for two years. Looks quick and shifty. Mac was high on him as someone who can contribute in an area of weakness for us. I'm sure other guys have more tidbits so please fill in what I left out. GO MEAN GREEN! This post has been promoted to an article

  5. Three of Dodge's six wins were against WKU. Two off those while they were in transition and not conference members.

  8. Did anyone mention that Dunbar, Akpunku and the JC defensive backs and linebackers might be worth one win? Also, we had one less home game and one less home win. Finally, the loss of our two best playmakers...Chancellor for four games; Jimmerson for two probably cost us a win. I consider both seasons as comparable. No real backward movement but no gain either.

  12. So we're gonna end up playing the same shitty teams in the same shitty stadiums in the same shitty conference. What's next? Karl Benson announces he's the new CUSA commish?

  13. I like how this UNT/UTSA thing is beginning to shape up. Finally UNT will have someone close to home and in Texas to have some fun with on an annual basis in both FB and BB. How great will that be...FINALLY? It is A-OK with me if the UTSA folks wants to brag...they deserve some credit for what they have accomplished to date, but UNT will be "all in" for these games...the tailgate atmosphere and the stands should be full and lively at both places. This is going to be fun and it is what helps make college football and basketball so much better than the pro game. So, bring it on UTSA folks....let's build a friendly rival game and make this a MUST ATTEND affair home and away. Hope to see you in 2013, and as my earlier post stated, UNT takes down UTSA in 2013! Book it, Danno!

  15. Nightmare scenario would be MWC takes Rice, UTEP, Tulsa and UTSA and we are left in another conference without any teams in our region. I am positive this is what will happen.

  16. I agree that we should be VERY proactive in talking with the MWC.

  19. I acknowledge that the Big East is currently above the others, but am just not sure it can sustain. It's a circus that's going to have mighty Tulane playing San Diego State. That just doesn't scream multi-millions per school television contracts to me. Also, they are severely diluting their basketball, which has been the conference bread and butter forever. So yes. Currently a step higher than the other four, but for how long? The split, a la the old 1A and 1AA is coming, if not via official recognition as a separate level of football, then de facto via the silly bone of "access bowl," which will likely never, ever, in the entirety of the new playoff's existence, result in an actual semi-final bid. Of that I have no doubt. That the MAC, SBC, MWC, and CUSA will be on the way down, I have no doubt in my mind. Which way does the Big East end up? That's the wild card. Also, I realize you've been trolling this place pretty hard, but good on the Frogs for forgoing the move to the Big East and somehow finagling their way into the Big XII. It'll probably result in fewer 11-win seasons, but given the state of the two conferences, it appears to be a much more solid move for the Frogs, especially with their emphasis on football and baseball over basketball.

  30. This should be VERY concerning to us. It's apparent the "old" CUSA schools are feeling left behind and are willing to jump to the BE just so they won't look like orphans. Literally every team that the BE had that would have made TV execs perk up has left...or will be leaving soon. Where this should concern us is that USM is already eyeing the door, UAB can't be real excited...and the replacements will be those same Belt schools that you all blame for attendance woes.

  31. Tech beat them. And, Iowa State. The screwed around past powerhouse Kansas. They'll be perpetually mediocre in football and atrocious in basketball. As I said, you have to give them credit for dominating the crappy conferences they were in before. It allowed them to don the veneer of worthy entry into a better conference. They're a great example of making lemonade out of lemons.

  36. The next few months leading up to signing day, recruiting, off season conditioning, etc., then spring football it self will give us a good indicator of next season. Regarding recruiting...I cannot say I am for or against it...I was a juco many moons ago. Juco's have a spot on every roster. Repeat spot / spots. To fix an immediate need would be a reason to go juco...not to "rebuild" your football team. Example...Look at Charlie Weiss at Kansas. He has over 20 transfers / juco's on his current roster. That is not healthy for long term stability on the field or in the locker room. Football is a team sport and "team" is not implemented with 20+ players being around for 2 years. And did that give him an immediate "fix"? Mac is the head coach for a reason...he has skins on the wall. And has been stated, before and argued....2 years does not rebuild a program. I like everyone else on here wishes we were bowling...but we are not. It is what it is. Until I get a UNT coaching hat and whistle, I am supporting what is done in the offices, thinking they know what is best for what is put on the football field. I would not make decisions in Coach Macs office any more than I would expect him to make a good decision in my office. Remember that a football team has many different pieces to the puzzle...I just dont think Coach Mac has all the right pieces yet...I think he will find them...but that is why he has the coaches hat and whistle...not me.

  39. Reasons for optimism going into CUSA: 1. QB contender was 15th-28th rated in nation coming out of high school 2. Improved running backs with Reggie Pegram. 3. Improvement in receivers with Darrius Terrell and the emergence of Smith and Lewis. 4. If the Feldt brothers can live up to potential, perhaps our best offensive line ever. 5. Influx of JC (hopefully defensive linemen) players to help shore up some holes. 6. Emergence of Whitfield (3 int., 12 PBU) and the return of Warner.

  40. The guy is a DL or two and a couple or WRs from making this a go. Look everywhere else: -Talented OL which will be very experienced the next two years. -Experienced QB who played level depsite all the problems at WR. -Depth and talent at tight end. -Depth and experience returning at RB I think we need a true H-back/F-back-type...but, really, that's just my preference as someone who also has a degree form Tulsa and has seen what they with Charles Clay, Willie Carter, and Garrett Mills. We do need WRs...not just guys who walk on and wear WR numbers on their jerseys. -Secondary is young, but very talented and now with a year under their belts. I was skeptical about moving Whitfield to corner; but, I think he becomes a stud there longterm. -Linebacker isn't going to be bad with upperclassmen Derek Akunne and Zachary Orr leading the way. We've got some young guys there as well who can run. -The only question mark - and the biggest - is will we get some depth on the DL. We have some guy who put in good play there, but there aren't enough. Abbe and Boutwell will be seniors...after that...a huge drop off in experience. Need the redshirting kids and whomever we sign in February to really show up and step up.

Seriously...you can take it to the bank right now and spend it...no way you will have to pay it back....UNT takes down UTSA in 2013!

  44. I don't think many are calling for a coaching change and they should not be at this point. McCarney will almost certainly get two more years short of a Shanice Stephens melt down. However, I don't see how anyone is happy with the progress demonstrated this year ether on the field or thus far in recruiting. There have been some positives, the team is bigger and more fundamentally sound. It was also a relatively young team with lots of players returning next year. Next year will tell the tale, no more excuses will be acceptable.

  48. ULM went 6-6 (5-3) under Charlie Weatherbie in 2009. Fired him. Todd Berry came in and improved the win total by -1. Went 5-7 (4-4) then 4-8 (3-5) in 2010 and 2011 respectively. He went 7-4 (5-2) this season and is getting all kinds of praise. We had the worst coach in UNT history. Fired him. Danny Mac came in and went 5-7 (4-4) his first year and 4-8 (3-5). I think we can all just hold off on declaring the Danny Mac hire to be a lost cause.

  49. UNT90...no offense taken..again, I am just a fan / dad that is trying to keep positive through a tough part of the year coming up during recruiting, off season and spring. I do agree, spring is a time to make the fan base feel good....but I think it also is a time to see what is to come. I just got off the phone with a close friend of mine who's son plays at Purdue...man...I do not wish that situation on anyone. Before anyone continues the "get rid of Mac" song, they need to talk to these boys like this kid at Purdue.

  50. Dodge was stagnation, he was a recession. Now we have to pay the price with 3-4 years of coach'em up to get back to having a shot at conference games. It sucks, but it's true. The good thing is we are moving into a weaker CUSA with more bowl options. So while Tulsa might own the West for the first few seasons there is no reason to believe we can't play the number two role and still go bowling. UTSA, UTEP, Tulane, Rice. Let's not act like those games are impossible.
