Classic UNT athletics ! Here in KY there are NO EXCUSES in basketball. Benford would already be on the hot seat at any college in this state. I am sick of the damn excuses. WKU is already competing at the near top levels in D1 with a 1st full year HC and Murray State can play with ANYBODY not to mention UL and of course the Cats are both THE best. UNT can't even compete at the top levels of D2. Why do you guys tolerate this crap? LOSING the 1st round of the NCAA tourny is considered failure here. UNT considers this some remarkable damn achievement. Just find a way to WIN WIN WIN !3 points

Welll, we got to watch Romo throw the ball at Dunbar's feet, and then Romo blame Dunbar for not catching the ball with his shoelaces.2 points

Saw UTA mentioned in a few threads, so thought I'd start a thread if that's OK. Our next game is at Samford on saturday...and in years past they play a slow-down offense, which goes against UTA's usual offense and we've had trouble against those teams before. If we can beat them, then I feel good about our 2pt road win at UC-Baskersfield and our 4pt home loss to OU. We led by 11 early in that game, forgot how to score for about 10 minutes and had to come back from 17 down in the 2nd half to tie it up before eventually losing. That being said, we played about 30 minutes of good basketball and lost by 4. If we'd just made another 3 or stopped their big-time run in the first half, we probably win that game. But we're learning how to win games that in years past, we lose by 20 and are never really in. Baby steps I guess. So I don't know what to make of the team. When we pressed OU, we got a lot of turnovers (which is what we did to your guards last year and other teams as well). But once a team breaks our press and takes care of the ball, we can be pretty average defensively in my opinion. And offense is still trying to replace Ingram and Reed and find a rhythm, which it hasn't in either game yet. A lot of our points are going to have to come from blocked shots, rebounding and creating turnovers. Mitchell will be tough to guard. Could be interesting. The 3s aren't falling for us at all, so we're shooting a lot of mid-range jump shots and winning the battle of the boards and 1-1 so far. An inside game may materialize, but so far not yet. But considering we drew 6400+ for OU to the CPC the other night it was totally loud and intense, I can't wait for 2000 UNT fans to come to Arlington and cheer the Mean Green on next year at our building--our annual big rivalry game with ya'll might be a near sellout like OU. That should be some great atmosphere.1 point

My son is a redshirt this year and came home this weekend. I took my dad hat off and put my coaching hat on as I walked him out to his truck Sunday morning as he was leaving for Denton and told him the following: This week of practice is going to be tougher than any fall two a days practice you ever had...no one on campus; you have had your butt handed to you; and pride is all you are playing for against WKU. He like everyone of his teammates gets discouraged from time to time until they look at the future of UNT and Coach Macs visions....see, Connor has never played on team that has lost more than 3 games in a season from 4th grade pee wee through his senior year in high school. I also remind him of his high school and where they were prior to the new head coach. There were many loosing seasons at Arlington Martin. When Bob Wager took over the head coaching job there were not immediate district championships, but there were more notches in the win column...beginning to sound familiar to UNT? Last year Connor played on a Martin team that had it's best record yet...12-2. 9 players going on to play D1 football and 3 playing D2 or 3 off of that team. Prior to Bob Wager taking the head football job, Martin was thought of as a baseball and girls volleyball school...it still it, but now it has the same respect on the football field. See more similarities with UNT? 7 years now and Bob Wager has taken Martin from where it was to now one of the most respected teams in Texas high school football. 7 YEARS.....!!!! Coach Mac has been here two years and has given UNT more wins...well some of you know the stats better than I. I know college football and its demands are different that high school when it comes to expectations on the football field from the booster members and the UNT community....and yes, I still look back at that Troy game and wonder what if...but I also look at a very, very young team that is in transition; and I think a transition that my son will be able to look back on and compare to his high school. Past players, I applaud your past success on and off the field. I hope these current, younger players look back at those great teams and individuals that put the blood, sweat and tears on Fouts to help in building what is UNT Football today with Apogee and the UNT Athletic facility. But when it is all said and done, I think Coach Mac will have turned this ship around where players like my son can stand with the great alumni / players in the past and be just as proud as ya'll are. Would you be of the said unmotivated to help or would you like to be the one to help make this happen for each away game? I would help as my time allows, but need someone else to carry the majority of the load for each and every away game. Seriously, would love to work with you on this. Interested?1 point

Pssst. The Powers That Be have already kicked the Big East out. For the next 12 years the systems works likes this. Playoff Level: Teams ranked 1-4 Big Bowl + Accesse Bowls: Rose (PAC 12 + Big Ten, Sugar (SEC + Big 12), Orange (ACC), Fiestia, Cotton, Georgia Which means any given year there will be 3 at large slots in access bowls with one of those 3 slots going to the highest ranking team from the Group of Five (Big East, MWC, CUSA, MAC, SBC) Bowl Level: Approximately 28 bowls that all have contractual obligations to the various conferences.1 point

I would think we would be pretty set at LB for this class. But he does sound like a good player--431 in 3 years is a mess of tackles. And signing the oldest in a family of football stars might show foresight for the future.1 point

We also had pro-line in Fort Worth work up an image for caps with the NT star on it. I believe that there was a black version and a green version. When we met with their sales rep and looked at the image, he said that in his opinion, it was the best image for a North Texas cap that he had ever seen. He said that if the University used this logo on it's official gear, they would sell it all out. I think that FFR still has the image somewhere, but mine got lost in the transfer of electronic files when I bought a new computer. What I hate more than anything else in this discussion is the phrase "ain't gonna happen".1 point

Watching Texas whoever on T night is only slightly more interesting than the LHN itself. That was pretty boring football yesterday after that great Texans Detroit game. GMG1 point

If we're really going hypothetical...how about Georgia loses to Georgia Tech - then beats Alabama next week. Florida loses to FSU. I wonder where we'd stand then. Oregon would seemingly be next inline, but unless UCLA beats Stanford Saturday (tossup game since it's in Pasadena) - Oregon wouldn't win their division of the Pac 12, much less the conference. ND and Kansas State could backdoor in or something like that.1 point

gksmith...my son appears to finally have the school concept thing. it may have something to do with any short comings in the class has a little different consequences than when he was at home. LOL Although every college football player has dreams of playing in the NFL...my son realizes his chance to play is so much smaller than the percentage of boys that get to play college football at any level, much less D1.1 point

I really enjoy doing it. It's a lot more fun for me than watching the game at home, even when you throw in the work to set up and clean up. There are always a great group of regulars as well as new folks to enjoy the game with that show up each time, from students to retirees.1 point

That was great article... As I give major kudos to the past UNT teams and their contributions; without those contributions what we see now in Apogee and the athletic village would not be possible...it is my hope that THE BEST IS YET TO COME. Regardless of Saturdays outcome at WKU, I think there is a since of anxiety about what can "be" in the next couple of years. We have to believe in Coach Mac...WE HAVE TO BELIEVE IN THE MEAN GREEN!!1 point

3XL knows what the hell he is talking about, and I agree with him 100 percent. You use what promotes and sells the best, and he has created that. SilverEagle and I used the same approach with Greenstock and sold nearly everything we produced. It was fun to prove ourselves right in that we knew what looked good, what people wanted and what would sell. I love the uni's, and even love the interlocking NT even more. Our club baseball team used that same logo on their cap back in '02-'03.. When I asked their coach where he got his hat he said "If I only had a dollar for every time I get asked that". And finally, I'm glad people are coming to the realization that the only way to enhance the light green is with black accents. Overall, I love it! Rick1 point

His team cant shoot...but that's not his fault. His team plays no perimeter defense...but that's not his fault. His team gets consistently outrebounded...but that's not his fault. His team takes ill advised shots and shows no basketball IQ...but that's not his fault. One of his players just might be an academic casualty...but that's not his fault. Tell me then, what IS the responsibility of a COACH?1 point

Well...the short answer again is that the few cannot always do for the many. Thought that was fairly clear. These things do not happen on their own and the businesses rarely initiate this sort of activity. Of course anyone is welcome to volunteer their time and often some of their own money to set these up. That's the answer as to "why", Silver....too many who want these things set up so they can just come, have a great time, and leave. Too few folks to do the leg work, the set up and the take down and clean up after folks leave. If you are talking about the Pavilion, that takes several hours to set up and then take down. Then there is the purchase of the feed, etc. It does not have to be the Alumni Assoc. or a chapter setting these things up...lots of places, such as Rudy's might be willing to help. Just need the volunteers like those who have stepped up in Collin County with the Alumni Collin County Chapter to bring these events to life. Those of us who do volunteer...do it because we love doing it....but, we need help...we need more people to step up and help. Lots of folks offer suggestions for what someone else should do or do better the next time. And, some of the suggestions are great and well thought out...some not so much. But, rarely do those doing the suggesting or asking step up to say..."hey, I'll get that watch party thing going in Tarrant County, Johnson County or at Rudy's in Denton, etc. Not complaining nor am I pointing fingers, just explaining that these things take time, money and volunteers....heck, even getting the word out at times can be time consuming enough. Would love to see watch parties all over the metroplex for every away game. Happy to help anyone get something going....we have some folks with some experience in doing this sort of thing and we can help...just cannot do it ALL. The other factor is turnout...it is hard to keep doing events when so few folks actually show up. The more folks turn out, the more viable doing these events becomes. Silver...hope this helps to better answer your question.1 point

Thanksgiving Proclamation [New York, 3 October 1789] By the President of the United States of America, a Proclamation. Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor-- and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness. Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be-- That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks--for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation--for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the course and conclusion of the late war--for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed--for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted--for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us. And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions-- to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually--to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed--to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shewn kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord--To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the encrease of science among them and us--and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best. Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789. Go: Washington Happy Thanksgiving Mean Green Nation, and God bless America!1 point

Wasn't the reason MTSU was not invited to CUSA because they are in the same geographic area as Vandy and Tenn.? Too much competition for audience? If NT has a rival now THAT is the team.1 point

I propose sports leagues being operated as capitalist ventures will destroy themselves. Capitalism seeks to eliminate or diminish the competition, which is good for an individual firm. Sports leagues cannot exist without competitors, and in fact do better when competitors are on a more equal footing.1 point

Mark, I would certainly love to talk to Rob about hosting away-game watch parties at the Pavilion and would equally love to set up the facility to do so. The only thing would be the membership issue. Now of course, for in-state away games, we should be encouraging everyone even remotely available to actually go to those games. Perhaps organized county chapter car-bus-train-plane!?-pooling parties?1 point

I really like these uniforms and I think most people would they would go over really well with most fans. I find it funny that some here complain about changing uniforms every two years. We now have NCAA teams changing uniforms every two games. Tradition isn't as big as it once was. I love the interlocking NT but I think I'd like the SOW a little better. I'd gladly take either over having North Texas spelled out on the helmets. Getting back to reality, I would be surprised to have new uniforms next year or anytime soon. I think the current old style uniforms will be the main stay while Mac is here. I think they're solid but the shade of green needs to be tweaked. I also don't expect RV to remove North Texas from the helmets while he's here unless someone really puts pressure on him to do so (administration, Mac, large booster).1 point

I think you would have to sell it to RV more than Mac, RV likes a classic uniform, from what I recall1 point

Green Mean....the comparison is not to a high school program; the same comparison could be made to any number of programs whether it is high school, college or professional that undergoes a 'makeover'. The comparison was made to a time frame only and the success that this particular high school has had after a coaching change. I choose that high school only because that is the only 'system' that i am half way familiar with. Please excuse my ignorance that I cannot call out any other name other than the one that has been mentioned here way too many times. Again...my son believes in UNT and all that is associated with UNT...school, athletics and the coaches...Thus, I believe in my son. Please excuse my ignorance and inability to recall any other progam. GMG1 point
-
I applaud the original post but I don't think its a proper and fair to compare a high school program's growth to a FBS program. That said I hope you're right. But being a NT fan for quite a while now I'm not optimistic until it actually happens.1 point

North Texas football will celebrate(?) their 100th anniversary next year. Some have watched North Texas football for over 50 years. This isn't a microwave mentality we're talking about here. Two instances in our history when things got turned around quickly and noticeably. From 1943-45 North Texas did not field a football team. So starting from scratch, Odus Mitchell is hired and his first season is 1946,, 1946- 7-3-1....including a win over Houston 1947- 10-2... including wins over Houston and Florida....went to bowl game 1948- 6-4. 1949-..8-4..including a win over Houston 1950 7-2-1. including wins over Houston and Nevada Hayden Fry 1973-5-5-1 co-champions of MVC......with previous coaches players from a 1-10 season 1974-2-7-2 ...losing season, but we also beat a ranked team. SDSU 14-0....the last time we've done that 1975- 7-4 with wins over Houston (who won the SWC the very next year) and Tennessee. 1976 7-4 none of the four losses were by more than 7 points (Miss St. 0-7, Texas 14-17, SMU 31-38, Florida State 20-21) Even Corkey Nelson went 8-4 in his second year with wins over New Mexico St. AND New Mexico....after driving out to Albuquerque on the bus. And his team won it's show-down game with ULM 27-7. All with a much smaller budget.1 point
