"The report also gave North Texas high marks for hiring the only coach to wear sunglasses on a 24 hour basis, the only school in the BCS to do so. For this the SWCA (sunglasses wearing coaches association) gave North Texas an A+, though offensive predictability on the field was not factored in to the final mark"5 points

No one is absolving the players entirely. On the whole they shot horribly and played lethargically. This team, well coached however, should be able to shoot horribly and play lethargically and worse case have a tight game with a D-2 team for 35 minutes before opening up a comfortable lead and winning by +10. To this point, this team is not well coached. Coach Benford mentioned four points of emphasis at the start of the year...winning rebounding battles, getting paint touches, playing intense, full-court defense and getting into transition on offense. We've regressed in all four of those areas. That's on coaching. The half-court offense...it's atrocious(worse than JJ's ). I've never seen 6 straight passes between just 2 players...seen(or heard) that twice already this year. I've never seen a 3-man weave atop the key with no movement by the two low-men...seen that numerous times already. Either Benford has failed to completely install his half-court offense or his players don't get it. Both are on coaching. And yes...then there is that effing ridiculous, middle-school gimmicky substitution pattern. Players need to make shots...but coaches need to put those players in the position to make them. We're not a good perimeter shooting team and that's not going to change this year (or next if all our verbals sign)...but lots of poor shooting teams have been successful by utilizing an offense (or defense) that suits the strengths of their team. For me, that means using this team's depth and athleticism and playing 94 feet of pressing defense, getting out and running at every opportunity, having CJ and Tony run some two-man at the top of the key with wings cutting-in off penetration rather than just spotting-up and adding more size in the form of Coleman to the interior, freeing Tony to drift and play more perimeter-ly. And yes...keeping players on the floor for longer than shot-lock shifts.4 points

“You have to show that you can help us win games,” McCarney said. “Does that mean you have to be an NFL draft pick? No. Does that mean you can continue to sit in the program and never help us? No. That means I made a mistake in bringing you here and you made a mistake in coming here.” Look...didn't most of us expect us to finish with a 4-8 or 5-7 record? My prediction was 5-7, but that 4-8 wouldn't shock me as much as 6-6. The truth is, when you looked up and down this roster, the depth wasn't there in key places: (1) The defensive line depth was glaring. It doesn't matter that you have a guy or two that is "good." You have to have bodies to rotate in there because this is perhaps the toughest position, physically, to play - day in and day out, week in and week out, year in and year out. (2) The entire starting secondary and many its backups had graduated/used up their eligibility. Are there some good, young athletes there? Yes. But, replacing all four starters in the secondary was going to spell trouble along the way. (3) The talent at wide receiver was not especially good, and needed two to three people to really step it up. I think we've all been pleasantly surprised that the run game didn't suffer a drop off with the losses of Lance Dunbar and James Hamilton. We have a bright future there. I think the surprise disappointments were the early season special teams struggles and the lack of development in the wide receiver corp. QB has been debated ad infinitum, as the QB position always is at any level on any team during any season. There was a time in Football History when people wondered whether Steve Walsh or Troy Aikman was the future of the Dallas Cowboys. (You forgot already that in 1989 Walsh was 1-4 as a starter for Dallas, and Troy was 0-11?...Walsh's QB rating 60.5 for the season, Aikman's 55.7...really.) I think, as many do, the game is won and lost "in the trenches." Our offense trench seems to be set well for the next two to three seasons. We are deep at running back. We seem to be deep at...tight end! I'll argue that with Thompson you have an experienced leader; and, in Berglund, you have a guy whose talent was recognized at one point in his life with scholarship offers from Kansas State, Boise State, Tulsa, UCLA, and Utah...schools that have a pretty decent bowl appearance record over the past decade or so. I think we're set there no matter who wins the position next spring and fall - and, there will be a quality backup. That leaves me with this, as I've said before: (1) We need depth on the defensive line. (2) We need more true playmakers at receiver. I don't think Dan is that far off. I know it stings him and us to be losing. But, let's face it...we're right where many of us thought we would be anyway. Here's to hoping the 2013 signing day delivers three or four DTs and two to three WRs who can step in a contribute immediately. I know Dan is healthy, even given his slight setback last year. So, at this juncture in his life and career - and in UNT's, given the step up to C-USA impending - I don't see the point in redshirting talent that can be on the field helping. Get guy who can help on the field from the get go.4 points

It wasn't just "one game". It was one game where we managed to lose to andbe out rebounded by a D2 team. One where multiple coaching decisions that would leave a YMCA league basketball spectator scratching their head. We very well may turn it around and turn Ina dream season. In the meantime telling a fan who is upset about us SEVERELY underperforming to "shut the f*ck up" is a bit naive. By your logic JJ never failed to coach well, his teams just didn't put the ball in the basket enough. And Bowler I simply have to ask. Are you legitimately a fan of Benford or is his greatest asset that he's not JJ? Feel free to decry my audacity under your tennis handle on the other board.4 points

Not listed as early signees. I would not be surprised if both offers have been pulled, with one being held open for a shooting guard (something Benford HAS to know he needs) and one being saved on the possibility of Edo comitting to UNT. We are in his final four schools, and if he wants to come here, he will have a scholarship, I'm sure. Let's hope Edo's recruitment yields better results than the last vowel-consonant-vowel guy we recruited (and signed, by the by)...2 points

It's studies like this that perpetuate the environment of racism to occur... The black community continues addressing this. It needs to stop. I'm fairly certain that Benford being black was not one of the top 2 or 3 reasons for hiring him. RV was not sitting in his office thinking, "We need a black coach.." "We're all black friends..."2 points

And that right there shows why these kind of ratings and assessments are usually garbage. "If you don't play by my arbitrary rules, you get an F." Give every qualified candidate a fair shake, regardless of race; and hire the best candidate, regardless of race--if that happens, no one should have a problem.2 points

Football is won/lost at the line. It's no coincidence Dickey's bowl teams set the high water mark for success in the modern era. Look at the defensive linemen we had: Booger Kennedy, Mike Pruitt,Adrian Awasome, Darrell Daniels, Sky Pruitt, Evan Cardwell, etc. If we want to win we need linemen. One of the most exciting things about hiring Coach Mac was his record with defensive linemen. This program HAS to start recruit more studs on both sides of the line. The other "skill" positions are great, but they can only do their jobs when the guys who start the plays with their hands on the ground are doing what they are there to do.2 points

current classification: Player DT's Jr: Richard Abbe - contributor So: Joe Astorga - haven't noticed him Jr: Ryan Boutwell - contributor Sr: Tevinn Cantly - gone Fr: Mustafa Haboul - redshirting Fr: Dylan McDorman - redshirting Fr: Sir Calvin Wallace - redshirting +1 new recruit than can step in immediately, and we are still short handed here... injuries would leave us very very shorthanded again, and they happen every year. I am intrigued by the 3 redshirts though...plus austin orr moving to DT, if he can stay healthy. maybe that's a reach. DE's Jr: Aaron Bellazin - contributor Fr: Malik Dilonga - redshirting Fr: Brad Horton - redshirting So: Alexander Lincoln - contributor So: Daryl Mason - contributor Jr: Brandon McCoy - contributor Sr: K.C. As with DT's, injuries can make this list look really thin very quickly, and these injuries happen every year. WR's RSr: Christopher Bynes - gone Jr: Carl Caldwell - ?? So: John Chelf - xfer, hearing good things? Sr: Ivan Delgado - gone Fr: Carlos Harris - contributor So: Willie Hubbard - ?? Fr: Roderick Lancaster - redshirting Jr: Lynrick Pleasant - ?? Jr: Darius Terrell - xfer, hearing good things? I think WR will be better next year, but we shall see. Having Chancellor and Harris...plus Terrell and Chelf? I think we should be good right there. Any contributions from the redshirts would be gravy, right? If we can just add a guy that can flat out fly and catch the ball...hmmmmm...... I have been sitting with a buddy of mine that played TE for UNT and he yells at thompson nearly every play. Says that thompson doesn't deliver the ball when the WR is open on nearly every play. I hadn't noticed it until I had him walk me through some plays. It seems fairly obvious to me now. Couple this with the misthrows, I am now convinced that we can upgrade. If Thompson did end up as our backup, I think our offense COULD end up being much better next year with that solid O-line and running game. I'm already convincing myself that next year is when we will see REAL progress. When Mac's 1st and 2nd classes are able to come in and get a year or 2 under their belts in this system, I feel like this is where it SHOULD get a bunch better... The only thing I know for sure is that I'll get to see 6 home games next year, and when we are in cusa, our games should be on TV more often. So, we should atleast get to see how wrong I am with my assessment. I predicted 7 and 6 this year, losing a bowl game... I suppose we could still get there if we won out, and won the bowl game, but I'm not holding my breath. Go Mean Green.2 points

If you are nervous against a D2 team with about 40 people in the stands, then you don't need to be playing D1 college basketball. Jeez...2 points

Yeah but the top teams don't play each other. The big 12 looked the same with two divisions. All I'm saying is an A&M team that got beat up on repeatedly for over a decade looks like world beaters. Sure Alabama and LSU have been good, but the whole conference isnt what its made out to be.2 points

I'll be candid. If you think we lost that game because we couldn't put the ball in the hoop then you are as dumb as your previous post. We gave up 78 points to a D2 team and were outrebounded by 5. KState smashed them by 61 points and outrebounded them by 32 holding them to 26 points. We lost that game because of a lack of defensive intensity and rebounding, not scoring. That is coaching and preperation.2 points

If there was one season to break the bank and find an experienced head coach with a proven track record, this was it. Don't know if anybody knows this, but Tony Mitchell will be gone next year. And potential lottery picks aren't busting down our doors. If at the end of the season, we decide it was too much money to spend, then get rid of him, but go all in this season. Benford is coaching like a hockey coach with a poor team looking for identity. Shuffle up the lines until something sticks and if nothing sticks, keep shuffling. Hard to find a flow for the game, and chemistry with your teammates when everybody takes 2 minute shifts in basketball. This was not the season to hire a rookie coach who is learning on the job.2 points
-
Yes, he does. He hired the coach. He hired Dodge. His record with coaching hires is beyond sketchy. This was a team that was supposed to be loaded with talent and a possible top 25 level team. RV chose the person to coach that talent. IF that choice ends up being the wrong choice, it will absolutely affect the outcome of not one, but many basketball games. Stop kidding yourself. It is way too early to call for anyone's head, but to absolve RV of any role in this thing if it completely implodes is just foolish.2 points

Certainly not time to even think about changing coaches but two enormous loses; one to a good maybe great team, but we were not competitive, and one to a team that NT should have beat by at least 20 on a neutral court. Now what promised to be NT's best ever season, has NT fans wondering if NT will even be a break even team in the Belt. The talent is there but the team is at this point very bad based on were they should be. Benford is a rookie coach and seems to be making a lot of mistakes. He kept the team together, but they have to play that way. Mitchell was supposed to be very improved with all the camps and a full year of practice, yet he looks like the same player if not worse. Were is the inside game, the guy that could led the nation in rebounding? Coleman who was supposed to be center NT needed, has played relative little. Injuries are bad but this was supposed to be a deep team. However, I have no idea why Benford is substituting so much especially this early. Excuses don't cut it with this team. This coaching team was not hired to rebuild. Chances are they will never have the raw talent they have now, if they can't win with this group then the future is dim. Getting Patton and Walton back will help greatly, and the team obviously will get better. The question though is how much better and when. Hopefully the worst is over and these opening games will be forgotten.2 points
-
The problem with that game was we gave up 78 points to this team while being outrebounded by 5. They could only muster 26 against KState and were outrebounded by 32. Were we too nervous to move our feet on defense and close out on shooters and block out and grab rebounds? Nerves can affect shooting, but not defense and rebounding. That comes down to coaching and intensity.2 points

"White House 'Held Affair Over Petraeus's Head' For Favorable Testimony On Benghazi" http://m.newsbusters.org/blogs/noel-sheppard/2012/11/13/krauthammer-white-house-held-affair-over-petraeuss-head-favorable-tes ..."CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER: I think the really shocking news today was that General Petraeus thought and hoped he could keep his job. He thought that it might and it would be kept secret, and that he could stay in his position. I think what that tells us is really important. It meant that he understood that the FBI obviously knew what was going on. He was hoping that those administration officials would not disclose what had happened, and therefore hoping that he would keep his job. And that meant that he understood that his job, his reputation, his legacy, his whole celebrated life was in the hands of the administration, and he expected they would protect him by keeping it quiet. And that brings us to the ultimate issue, and that is his testimony on September 13. That’s the thing that connects the two scandals, and that’s the only thing that makes the sex scandal relevant. Otherwise it would be an exercise in sensationalism and voyeurism and nothing else. The reason it’s important is here’s a man who knows the administration holds his fate in its hands, and he gives testimony completely at variance with what the Secretary of Defense had said the day before, at variance with what he’d heard from his station chief in Tripoli, and with everything that we had heard. Was he influenced by the fact that he knew his fate was held by people within the administration at that time? Of course it was being held over Petraeus’s head, and the sword was lowered on Election Day. You don’t have to be a cynic to see that as the ultimate in cynicism. As long as they needed him to give the administration line to quote Bill, everybody was silent. And as soon as the election’s over, as soon as he can be dispensed with, the sword drops and he’s destroyed. I mean, can you imagine what it’s like to be on that pressure and to think it didn’t distort or at least in some way unconsciously influence his testimony? That’s hard to believe. If Krauthammer is correct, it's going to be very interesting to see if and how the Obama-loving media reports it...." Rick2 points

The deal is, we were in the preseason NIT at what was supposed to be the perfect timing for this program. Supposedly one of the most talented teams ever at UNT playing in a national tournament at just the right time, with a great draw and a chance to actually make it to NY. All that was wasted in what has to be the most disappointing loss in UNT history in any sport. Harry, I understand where you are coming from, but the problem is Coach Benford promised us better defense, rebounding, on the ball defense, and transition basketball. Every one of those areas has been worse. Can this team recover and become stronger in those areas than in previous years? Maybe. Will it recover by the Lehigh and St. Louis game? Highly, highly doubtful. So, we are basically left with the same old crap, which is hoping to win the conference tournament in order to get a play in game to the big dance. This team was supposed to be better than that. Many basketball experts predicted as much. It is, well, at this point, was Coach Benford's job to get us there. He has failed miserably up to this point. To see a team many of us (and basketball "experts") thought was capable of a national ranking lose to a D2 school, and then watch that same D2 school lose to K St. BY 60 FREAKING POINTS is probably the worse thing that has happened around here in 10 plus years. Yes, worse than the Dodge era. Worse than black jersey gate. Worse than the Tulsa loss at home. So much was expected of this team, not only by it's fan base,, but by many in the basketball press. Those expectations have been obliterated, and that is not only disappointing, but it hurts the program. No more national press. Hell, no more mention on local sports radio. Yet another chance for disconnected alumni to remain that way. After 2 games under Benford. Can things get better this year? Yes. Will they ever come within 100 miles of what they could have been? No. Rant over.2 points

That second sentence isn't a very bold statement. We are almost certain not to lose to another DII team this season. I have serious reservations that Benford is our guy. He talks a good game but he hasn't shown the ability to coach one. I preferred Fran to him, but I was behind him 100% until this debacle of a start. I'm still there but more along the lines of soviet political officer behind him rather than supporting him.1 point

Just had to share this story with the Mean Green Family – it says so much about this team. I am 5th year senior O-lineman #70 Coleman Feeley’s mom. Traveling up from Austin on Saturday for the “Sr. Bowl” against USA we experienced major car trouble in major traffic on 35. Our hearts were breaking realizing that we were going to miss the senior presentation before the game; that our son would be out there without us. To make a long story short, we were able to communicate with Mary Hardin, Football Administrative Assistant Extraordinaire, who does so much for this team. She arranged for the wonderful Jamie Simmonds, O-line Coach Mike Simmonds’ wife, to be with Coleman on the field. As the parent of a college football player, you pray for someone like Jamie to be near your son. Coaches’ wives and families live and breathe Mean Green Football too and their contribution, while mostly unseen, is immeasurable and invaluable. We learned the rest of the story when we finally arrived at the stadium at the end of the first quarter…Not only was Jamie Simmonds there for my son, but the whole O-line came out on the field – my son’s “brothers” were with him. While we always knew the Senior Family portrait would provide a bittersweet memory, we had no idea what a poignant picture it would be. Thank you everyone. Go Mean Green! (Many thanks to the Fortenberrys for photo – the family portrait with Jamie by Rick Yeats can be seen on the RYJ website)1 point

#70 will definitely be missed. He has provided leadership and stability for this team and it is appreciated by the great Mean green nation. These seniors have been through a great deal and it takes great and solid character to stay positive and stay the course under such conditions. Very happy to see this story as I was wondering why Coleman was being greeted by Mrs. Simmonds Saturday. Absolutely loved the fact that the entire O-line came over as well...family indeed! Thank you so very much for sharing this great story...but even more...thank you for sharing Coleman with the Mean Green family! God speed! WELL DONE #70!!!!1 point
