  1. Just had to share this story with the Mean Green Family – it says so much about this team. I am 5th year senior O-lineman #70 Coleman Feeley’s mom. Traveling up from Austin on Saturday for the “Sr. Bowl” against USA we experienced major car trouble in major traffic on 35. Our hearts were breaking realizing that we were going to miss the senior presentation before the game; that our son would be out there without us. To make a long story short, we were able to communicate with Mary Hardin, Football Administrative Assistant Extraordinaire, who does so much for this team. She arranged for the wonderful Jamie Simmonds, O-line Coach Mike Simmonds’ wife, to be with Coleman on the field. As the parent of a college football player, you pray for someone like Jamie to be near your son. Coaches’ wives and families live and breathe Mean Green Football too and their contribution, while mostly unseen, is immeasurable and invaluable. We learned the rest of the story when we finally arrived at the stadium at the end of the first quarter…Not only was Jamie Simmonds there for my son, but the whole O-line came out on the field – my son’s “brothers” were with him. While we always knew the Senior Family portrait would provide a bittersweet memory, we had no idea what a poignant picture it would be. Thank you everyone. Go Mean Green! (Many thanks to the Fortenberrys for photo – the family portrait with Jamie by Rick Yeats can be seen on the RYJ website)

  3. I thought the carmouche story was interesting. May not be relevant any longer, but I do think its crazy that he got another year to play. I don't really understand the hatred of some posters here who follow basketball closer than others or the posters who spend time going out of their way ridiculing the posters for liking this team, and rubbing their faces in it every time the team loses.

  6. I would rather them not do the chant to save the embarrassment of SOME of the students who ruin it with F bomb. Totally classless and disrespectful. All my kids, ages 11, 10, 9, 7, 5, and 2 know and sing the fight song all the time. On Fridays during football season and on game days during basketball season, we sing it on the way to school. We go to almost all the basketball games as a family and it scares me that the whole version of the song will be sung. I really don't want to have to explain to my 5 year old daughter (much less my 11 year old daughter) what the student section is yelling out.

  8. If UNT makes a bowl game in 2013, he buys season tickets. If they don't make a bowl game, I buy him season tickets. Mean green nation is now plus 1.

  9. I'd be surprised if we make it to 6-6. Even if we did, I would not be in favor of playing in a bowl in the event we were asked. With the exception of maybe the final 10 minutes of the game, I saw uninspired football against a bad USA team. You all do realize how many "gifts" we received last night? I like DT, but he just doesn't get the ball off quick enough and he telegraphs where he's throwing it. Until we get a high quality QB on campus we'll struggle for wins. And the transfer hasn't played a down of football in a while so don't go there. I think we have a few players riding the pine who transferred in from high profile programs.

  12. And in other revelations...How about those weather days this year! I was just glad Sunday weather wasn't Saturday weather. I can deal with 50 mph winds and blowing tents and furniture up on The Hill over rain and chill any day of the week. We had to build a wall to start our grill and then deal with some dirt debris in the burger but it was a blast! Awesome year of tailgating! GMG

  15. North Texas has had few, if any, rivalries in it's athletic history. During the 40's it was mainly East Texas State. (now A&M commerce). http://texashistory....ast texas state In the early 50's we seemed to have a rivalry with Midwestern State in WF. And we had a trophy attached. http://texashistory....hits/?q=rivalry http://texashistory..../166/?q=rivalry nothing was mentioned about a rivalry in any of the Yuccas after 53. The closest thing to a rivalry that we had in the 60's was Tulsa. And that was only for a couple of games that had MVC championship implications. If you search the word "rivalry" in the decade of the 60's on the Explore UNT yearbook site, you get no hits. http://texashistory....ns/UNTY/browse/ In the 70's we tried to start a rivalry with SMU, but that pretty much went away after Hayden Fry left. In the 80's our main rival was ULM and sometimes Texas State. In the 90's it was pretty much Texas State. ULM moved up to D-1 and what little rivalry there was between us pretty much went away. In the 2000's our main rivalries have been with NMSU, Ark St. and MUTS, but the word Rivalry, with those schools has mainly been tied to conference championship games. A rivalry, or two or three, would really energize our fan base. Having the games in a destination town helps as well. I would rather have renewed our past history with Texas State, but UTSA will do for a big rivalry. Names for a trophy? Something having to do with the fact that both towns are located on I-35 and/or the fact that our respective mascots are birds of prey. Tulsa would be my second choice. Believe it or not, Tulsa is a really cool city.

I saw the team win on national tv from California. It has been a strange season but an overall FUN and memorable one. Now onto ULM and Shreveport for some blackjack. GO Mean Green!!!!!

  22. Wednesday, (November 14, 2012) is the start of the early signing period (through November 21st) for Men & Women's Hoops. Decided to take a short drive down south today to Corsicana to watch Norris' Midland Chaps play Trinity Valley in the first game of a doubleheader. Norris is trying to get his grades in order and I'm not sure if he will sign early or not. On the court today, Norris had 4 points with about 10 minutes left in the game when I left. Not a great player but may find time in the rotation. Didn't start and only played about 2 minutes in the first half. Coach inserted him in the game with about 9 minutes in the first half and pull him 1 minute later. Came back later in the half and was pulled again after about 1 minute. Didn't score or take a shot the brief time he played in the first half. Started the 2nd half and played with alot of energy. Missed 1 outside shot badly but came back with the dunk of the game about 3 minutes later. Kid caught a pass right under the goal and quickly went up with a windmill left handed dunk. Missed the only free throw he attempted. Despite not playing much he appeared to be a leader on the floor. Hustles well, good passer and unselfish. Midland didn't have a lot of height so Norris played against a taller 4 but switched to the 3 at times. He will have to play the small forward position here as he does not have the bulk or strength to bang inside. Overall, will not be an impact guy for us but should see the floor. Jerion Henry, former Kimball All-State forward and Jordan Williams' teammate, was in street clothes on the TVCC bench. Henry verballed to USC in high school but didn't have the grades and ended up at some prep school last year (I think). Verballed or signed with OU earlier this year. Anyway, not sure if he was joking but he expressed some interest in UNT on twitter his senior year. There was some discussion on here that 2-time state tournament MVP, Shannon Lilly of Dallas Kimball was considering walking on at UNT. Anyway, Lilly plays for Navarro. Had a very brief chat with him prior to their game against Texas Wesleyan's (JV) .

  24. I have the 10th rated passing offense, 49th rated rushing offense, 44th rated scoring offense, and 81st rated scoring defense in the country. I don't play in a power confeence, but I played 2 SEC teams within a touchdown and beat a solid Navy team in OOC play, but I am only 3-3 in my conference and 5-5 overall. Who am I? I am Troy University, and I play in a much improved Sunbelt, where wins against even the bottom teams are getting tougher to come by. Troy has one more win than we do at this point. I believe our program is better than it was 2 years ago, and that it is still improving.

  28. This isnt football. A disciplined, veteran, basketball team...in their house...will do this to you. Especially if you are playing your first game with a new coach, in a new system, with players who havent played together much at all. This game will tell you NOTHING about how good you will be in two weeks, or two months. We will still beat Lehigh at home. We will still win the Belt. We will still win in Hot Springs. Take a look at what happened nationally. Kentucky squeaked put a win AT HOME against an unranked Maryland. The same UK with the nation's best recruiting class. The same defending national champs. Breathe. Show up in the pit. This team won't let you down like football did...I know you're afraid to love again but Benford's boys won't hurt you. Give them your heart. It's real love this time.

  32. I hope we play UTSA during Fiesta and Tulane during Mardi Gras, but we won't. UNT is taking over SMU's CUSA schedule, and UTSA is taking over Houston's so we will play UTSA in mid-October. And our every other year trips to El Paso, Houston, San Antonio, Tulsa, New Orleans, and eventually Ruston will all be better than any Big West or Sun Belt trips we made over the last twenty years. (Except for maybe Lafayette, because I love me some fried turkey.)

  36. I was commenting on Glick's post, especially the bolded portion. glick1980, on 10 November 2012 - 08:11 AM, said: In a game where 3 seniors really didn't play due to injury (Holeman - 12 minutes, Walton - 1 minute, and Patton - out) and our two best players were hit with questionable fouls that landed them on the bench, this outcome was not unexpected. I don't think we ever had such a poor game offensively under JJ.

  38. I have one piece of advice to people regarding Berglund, and that is don't categorize him with other players. Don't categorize him with other players who have gotten in law trouble, other players who have transferred multiple times, etc. Let him be who he is, Brock Berglund. He's a good guy who is very driven by the opportunity God has given him. You're right, the jury is still out on Berglund but he has the potential. There is no denying his skills. You say to "don't go there" urging us not to suggest Berglund based on nothing, yet you do "go there" as for criticizing him based on nothing. The truth is, he has arm strength and athleticism that far outclasses that of Derek Thompson. This will open up the playbook greatly compared to what we have been able to run this year. The one thing Thompson has done a decent job of in his career is not turning the ball over. This means to me that we at least will have a backup that won't come in there and just lose the game for us by turning the ball over. We'll see in spring ball, but the good thing is we have options for once.

  39. Bummer. Was really hoping he could figure it out, but looked like he was steadily working himself down the the depth chart. With the new guys joining next year, I guess he didn't like his prospects.

  40. Yep, would much rather stay in New Braunsfels and drive in for the game then stay in the wildly overrated city of San Antonio. And UTSA is not our rival. Let's try and have an ounce of self-respect, shall we?

  41. The same South Alabama team that ArkSt had trouble with at home (36-29), SEC team Miss St only beat by 20 at home (30-10), that beat FAU (who just beat WKU)? We not only beat an improving USA team today, but also covered the point spread (-9.5). Let's face it, the Belt is pretty competitive from top to bottom and that can make for some ugly games.

  42. That Troy game hasn't stopped haunting me. If we were to get to 6-6 (and I don't think we will), then I'm happy not getting a bowl invite. 6-6 is a step up, it's not a losing record and would be perceived as a decent season by potential recruits. Plus, this way we would end on a high instead of potentially getting destroyed by someone in a fourth tier bowl game and having to deal with that for the whole off-season.
    1 point
  43. I believe the belt could have 7 bowl eligible teams. I'm sorry, but we're so far down the list on teams to get a bowl invite should we win out. I hope we win out for momentum's sake.
    1 point
  44. Yeah, that's kinda where I'm at. I don't know if we could or even should go to a bowl game with a 6 win season, but getting 6 wins would be a huge step in the right direction.

  47. I used to be diehard UNT until I got on GMG. Now, I'm becoming a diehard Coog instead. Then why were we a Top 10 team at one time last year? Why did we get a 5 star receiver to decommit from Notre Dame to come to Houston? Why are most of our recruits this year high 3 stars? Then why are our recruits picking us over multiple BCS offers? Then why are we heading to an AQ conference next season? Why do we bring anywhere from 28-32,000 fans a game which UNT has NEVER had before? If we're such a low-level program, the why have we given you back to back 40+ point beatdowns? If we're a low-level program despite what I mention above, then what does that make UNT? Think about what you post before you post it Grandpa.
