  1. Tomorrow (Thursday) or men's basketball team takes to the court for the first time this season in an exhibition. Top five reasons you need to make the effort to attend. 5)It's free 4)You'll need to see a Mean Green victory this week 3)Tony Mitchell. There is a limited number of times you'll see this guy play at OUR house. Take advantage. 2)I know some of you are "football only" people but consider this. If Mac and Co had football talent comparable to what Benford has, against the exact same teams, we'd likely be 10-2 or 11-1. 1)They're representing our university

  2. A start-up gets a measure of grace that others don't get. 1. When they win its "wheeee lookit what they are doing". 2. When they lose its "well they've only been playing a couple years." 3. Start-ups get new dollars that they weren't getting before with some people buying in because that new program is seen as a good civic amenity. That takes away pressure to worry about making budget year in and year that burdens many programs scheduling. 4. Start ups market like crazy and offer ticket deals programs worried about budget would never offer. Then they tout those crowds to generate buzz. 5. Start ups don't have to deal with, "I went to a game five years ago and some team I'd never heard of pounded you." 6. Start ups don't deal with, "Why aren't you lower level? I saw the score and the #2 team in America ripped you up." 7. Start ups just don't have to contend with past negative perceptions. Let UTSA go through four or five sub .500 seasons in CUSA and see what happens. UAB attendance has fallen quite a bit from the heady days when they were brand new to CUSA.

  8. A few notes from today's practice Benford really stresses Defense. The intensity level is much higher during these drills Even tho there are several different rotations used , CJ,Jordan,Roger,Jacob & TM were running fast breaks together while the 2nd unit consisted of PJ,Alzee,Walton ,Niko & Coleman That in no way means this will be the lineup , just what I noticed PJ's nickname is Bulldog Overlander sat out , injury ? Didn't look too serious Patton was able to put a little weight on his knee today , more than Monday Not sure if he'll ever get any PT , but Austin Franklin ( walk on from Plano) is full of energy & bounce. He's a solid player as walk on

  10. Just an FYI...The UNT Alumni Pavilion at Apogee is open to all ...members and non-members alike this Saturday for Homecoming...no admission fee for non-members! There is a homecoming cake contest that will be going on in the Pavilion as well as the "normal" game day "stuff"...food, drink, etc. Cakes are set to be judged at 1:30PM...some really neat cakes in last year's event, and I suspect there will be as well this year...all themed, of course. If you have not stopped by the Alumni pavilion before now...well, here is your chance. It's also a good and convenient opportunity to join the Alumni Association or to renew your membership. HAPPY HOMECOMING...Be There...it's going to be a great Saturday with the Mean Green Nation!

  12. 5. North Texas Top matchups: at No. 15 Creighton (Nov. 9), NIT Season Tip-Off (Nov. 12-23), at St. Louis (Dec. 5), vs. Lehigh (Dec. 20) Analysis: Yes, North Texas. The biggest criticism of mid-majors every year is that they don't load up their schedules aggressively with high-RPI opponents. North Texas shouldn't have that issue thanks to a competitive NIT Season Tip-Off schedule that could square the Mean Green up with Kansas State and with an upset, against Virginia and Michigan/Pittsburgh. North Texas also plays a mid-major gauntlet schedule, starting at Creighton before traveling to a Saint Louis team flirting with the top-25, and hosting a C.J. McCollum-led Lehigh team. http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/2012/10/31/the-toughest-ncaa-hoops-non-conference-schedules-texas-duke-ucla-florida/1669605/

  13. I agree with most of what you say, and you know I do my part, but I don't agree that winning is directly linked with Athletic funding, ULM being a prime example. And yes, acting like an FBS school also means acting like FBS fans (which not only includes not asking for special treatment from the AD, but also includes griping on fan message boards when the team fails expectations tremendously).

  14. Did this guy have a stroke just before writing this? Tony was SBC player of the year last year? Who's coach Bedford? Benford was one of the most sought after assistants in college baseball? Who's Algee Williams? And I have heard Benford speak. I'm fairly sure he doesnt sound like an uneducated man...so why the lack of punctuation or sentence structure in the article?

  15. It seems like you box yourself into a corner if you put a specific timeframe on it. I would say he should and will get at least 3 years, but after that it depends on how things are going that are not just about W's, although W's make it a little easier to judge. He went 5-7 last year and will finish this year somewhere between 3-9 and 7-5. Next year who knows. If he wants to make the decision easy, wins will help a lot. If the wins don't come then he is going to have to show perceivable improvement in other areas. I hope that he is still coaching here in 10 years. That will mean something is going right. Constant coach churning really hurts programs because players tend to leave before their 4 and 5 years, plus players are having to learn new systems. Since we are not the type of program that has shown the ability to recruit lots of 3 star, 4 star and 5 star players, we have to develop them. That takes time. If players are leaving after 2 or 3 years, you never see them reach their full potential. I used the Rivals website to find the the players that signed NLI's with UNT going back to 2003. I then compared those players to our rosters for each of those years to track who actually showed up and remained on the roster at the end of each year. Rivals does not track when a walkon converts to a sholarship player and t does not track transfers that receive a scholarship, it only tracks high school and jucos that sign an NLI. Here are the numbers: ---------------------Signed--End----End-----End----End----End-----NLI On Year----#Juco-----NLI----YR1----YR2-----YR3---YR4----YR5----Roster 2003----6-----------24-----16-------16-------10------9---------7-------16 2004----2-----------18-----17-------14-------11-----11--------5--------33 2005----4-----------24-----22-------20-------14-----11--------5--------46 2006----4-----------19-----15-------12-------11------8---------6--------55 2007----1-----------18-----18-------14-------10------8---------2--------62 2008----7-----------26-----23-------21-------13------8---------3--------62 2009----7-----------20-----15-------16-------7--------5--------n/a------56 2010----10---------22------19-------18------12------n/a------n/a------62 2011----2-----------22------20-------19------n/a-----n/a------n/a------55 2012----1-----------22------22-------n/a------n/a-----n/a------n/a------61 One thing that jumped out at me is how few players that sign an NLI have remained on the roster at the end of year 3 and beyond (I assume the rosters I was using from meangreensports represented the end of year roster for all years except current year). It is a 50/50 proposition to make it to the end of year 3. I don't see how you can build depth with that much turnover. I plan to look at other schools to see if they have the same problem, but I posted an example of how LaTech currently has 16 redshirt seniors on their 2-deep according to their website. Most years we are lucky just to have 15 players combined on the roster that are 4/5 year players, much less on the 2-deep. It seems to me that one way to improve the team is to keep more players around for longer periods of time so they can get bigger/faster/stronger. If we are somehow able to start recruiting a more finished player (i.e. 5/4/3 star) then the turnover is not as big a deal. I am going to try to look at some of the power conference teams to see what their turnover looks like.

  16. Every coach that goes to a losing program will say the same thing. You get 3 years to fix it, or have it well on it's way to being fixed. That is life in college football. Our circumstances here are no worse than what Todd Berry inherited at perhaps the hardest-to-recruit-to school in America, with many, many, many more financial hurdles to face than UNT. Year three for him is 2012. That is the point. And Coach Mac knows this, as do all FBS college coaches. Win in 3, or start lining up other employment opportunities. Want more examples? How about: Frank Solich at Ohio. 2nd year record 9-5 (7-1) GMAC bowl birth. Kragthorpe took a Tulsa team that had won 2 games the previous 2 seasons to an 8-5 record and a bowl game his first year, and a Conference USA Championship and a Liberty Bowl win in his 3rd year. These are just off the top of my head. I'm sure there are many more out there. Look, it's not like other programs have never faced similiar circusmstances that DMac faces at UNT. If he doesn't have it well on it's way to a solution by year 3, odds are he never will, and that is why BCS coaches only get 3 years for the fix. I'll leave it to Tasty and other stat gurus to look at coaches that failed to show marked improvement by year 3 (lets call marked improvement bowl eligible) and see what percentage went on to turn the program around, but I would bet it would be very low. Now is not the time to call for DMac to be fired, but waiting until year 5 is waiting too long for such a call.

  21. Back on topic now. Was this one derailed by Cougar Queen or what? Anyway, of course practice is the best way to evaluate outside of a real game. You would think a "gamer" would step it up in practice but sometimes that just isn't the case. I think the staff plays DT because they think he is the best option at QB. What Harry said is legitimate and the reason you give him a chance is because play at that position has been poor and you want to try anything reasonable to improve the position. It could be Osborn performs so poorly in practice that there is no way in Hades the staff plays him on purpose. He did play some last year late in games when we were clearly out of it. He played well but maybe it was because the opposition put in their developing players - I just don't know. Maybe he just plays better in games - I just don't know that either. Based on what I saw - I think it's worth a shot.

  24. Price did a lot at UTEP, he took one of the worse programs in the country and at least took them from constant bottom dweller status. Not sure they are not making a big mistake, UTEP has a lot of disadvantages and it is going to be difficult to get consistently better than what Price accomplished.

  29. Thanks for all three of you who checked in to make sure I'm ok. I guess for some debating the merits of federal vs. local emergency response was more important than ensuring a fellow UNT alum and Mean Green fan was still alive. Jerks. Anywho...Sandy was a weird storm...New Haven, and I'm pretty sure most of Connecticut was hit with pretty significant winds (70mph gusts) but actually got very little rain. Coastal CT and Long Island flooding and the flooding you're probably seeing in lower Manhattan and the low lying parts of Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island was actually due much more to the storm funneling the tides into Long Island Sound much faster and at a higher volume than it could flow back out. I actually got back into New Haven around 10am on Monday and New Haven Harbor was significantly higher than I can recall ever seeing it in the past...a good 8-10 hours before Sandy actually made landfall. In the end I think about a third of the state lost power (not my home, but my work is still without). The most recent death toll I've read is 62 for the entire eastern sea-board...tragic, but kudos to all involved in the evacuation, rescue and emergency response for with a storm of this magnitude things could well have been much worse.

  33. I guess meangreener and others will call this an excuse thread, but breaking down the current roster really shows how young we are at this time. DB: 18 on the roster: One Senior (Maduka) that rarely plays, Three Juniors (Trice, Jackson and Igboeli), Three Sophmores (Lee, Marshall and Warner) and 11 Freshmen with 1, Whitfield, a redshirt. DE: 9 on the roster. One Senior in K.C. Obi, Two Juniors in McCoy and Bellazin, Two Sophmores in Mason and Lincoln (been playing DT), and 4 Freshmen with 1, Orr, a redshirt. DT: 7 on the roster. One Senior in Cantly, Two Juniors in Boutwell and Abbe, One Sophmore in walk-on Astorga and 3 Freshmen. LB: 13 on the roster. One Senior in Phillips, Three Juniors including Orr and Wright, Three Sophmores in Akunne, Stojkovic, and Dunham (DS), and 6 Freshmen with 2 redshirts in Polk and Washington. OL: 16 on the roster. Three Seniors in Fortenberry, Feeley and Summerfield, One Junior in Anyiam, Five Sophmores in Y'Barbo, Johnson, Lemon, Thompson and C. Feldt, and 7 Freshmen with Ellard and Shaw as RFr. ST: Atterberry a Senior and Olen a Junior. Both have Freshmen backups. QB: 5 on the roster. One Senior in Dodson, One RJr. in Thompson, one Junior in Osborn, one Sophmore in McNulty and one Freshman in Gill RB: 9 on the roster. One Senior in Brown, Four Juniors in Byrd, Monroe, Pegram (current rs/transfer) and Wilhite, One Soph. in Sashington and 3 Freshmen in Jarvis and Lewis with Jimmerson as a redshirt. TE: 9 on the roster. Four Seniors in Prior (RS and will return), Power, Brown and Burks, One Junior in Miller, One Sophmore in Smith and 3 Freshmen in Lynn, Smith and Jones who is a redshirt. WR: 15 on the roster. Two Seniors in Bynes (RS) and Delgado, Five Juniors in Chancellor, Caldwell, Pleasant, Smith and Terrell (current RS/transfer), Three Sophmores in Teagarden, Chelf (current RS/transfer) and Hubbard and 5 Freshmen in Harris, Lancaster (rs), Rivera, Schrapps (rs) and a RFr. in Sampson. We are extremely young with the meat of the team returning. The biggest pieces to replace are Atterbury, Phillips and Power (blocking), but this really points out how young this team is, and that the future is bright. I know loses like the one to MTSU is tough, but there is alot to be excited about. Patience is a virtue.

Don't fret folks....the re-constructed student union building at UNT is not a dead issue.....just another step in the game of state politics and state process....it will get done IF the University of North Texas Administration and students want it to get done...now we can all see how badly they do want it re-built. My guess...project will get approved! Patience, grasshopper, patience!
