  1. http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/8494091/writers-roundtable-our-experts-answer-five-big-questions-midnight-madness 5. Is there one sleeper player or team we should jump on the bandwagon for? O'Neil: Tony Mitchell and North Texas. The two go hand in hand. If Mitchell can be the player many suspect he can be, the Mean Green will be a big sleeper worth watching. Originally targeted for Missouri, Mitchell didn't have the grades to make it there, so he ended up in the Sun Belt Conference, where he averaged 14.3 points and 10.7 rebounds as a freshman. Plenty expected him to jump to the NBA -- his raw athletic ability alone made him worth the risk -- but he opted to stay, even after his coach, Johnny Jones, bolted to LSU. Don't be surprised if Mitchell doesn't turn Denton, Texas, into a college hoops destination visit this season, much like Isaiah Canaan lured folks to Murray last season.

  3. I was attending the President's Dinner tonight at the Alumni Pavilion with Dr Rawlins. It's a chance for club and organization presidents to mingle with each other and get in touch with members of Rawlins cabinet and the higher ups of Student Affairs. During Rawlins' speaking portion of the event, he, in his usual frank and honest manner, was of course encouraging us all to get our organizations out to Tuesday's game and all the festivities with it ..... and then addressed the rumor of canceling classes at 3PM that day. This is how it went as well as I can remember: Universities today for better or worst (he considers it better) get no greater coverage and recognition than in their athletic prowess, ability, and turnout. UNT admittedly gets very few opportunities to access such a wide audience in a prime, uninterrupted time slot on national TV. That's why next Tuesday is so important. He personally is for the idea of closing the academic campus and encouraging students to attend the game, BUT he recognizes that executing such a policy in the middle of a semester during lab times, etc. would not be universally beneficial to all students or faculty. Thus, he is not canceling classes in any way. He is sending out a memo to all faculty tomorrow morning explaining his position, but will include the proviso that if a teacher or professor wished to alter their schedule or academic calendar for the event, it will be up to them and they certainly would not be frowned upon or faulted for such. It was entirely surprising and off the cuff to hear him address it. He went on to extol his love for our team and Coach Mac, even giving his own analysis of the last few games. It all just completely reinforced why I love having Rawlins as our President and I really hope he doesn't consider going back into retirement any time soon. *SIDE NOTE: got to seem some sketches on the reworking of the Master Plan today as well. Lots of cool stuff going on, but relevant to this board: It's an overarching goal to completely unify the identity of the campus and not have any particular section be simply a "destination point" (MGVillage). That hotel/convention center is going to have a large footprint. *

  5. In reviewing the offensive, defensive and special teams specific categories we are less than mediocre. Here is a review of those categories: Offense: Average Ranking 71 Nationally Conference Ranking: 6th The SBC has some very good offenses, especially when compared to us. Our strengths are sacks allowed and fumbles lost where we are second in the conference in both categories. We are third in time of possession which ranks us 16 nationally. At the other end of the spectrum our scoring offense (PPG) ranks us eighth in the conference and 113 in the nation. We also do poorly on 3rd down conversion percentage (110) and red zone conversion percentage (106). Each of those is the eighth best in the conference also. While we don't allow many sacks we are the worst in the conference for allowing tackles for loss. We are also in the 90s on first downs and passing yards per play. To illustrate how strong the Belt is in rushing our 4.27 average per play is 54th nationally but seventh in the conference. Defense: Average Ranking 56 Nationally Conference Ranking: 5th Our defensive statistics took a beating against Houston. We are dead last in the SBC in rushing yards allowed per attempt. However, we rank 78th nationally, not horrid but you'd think that we'd be much worse for being tenth in the conference. Our worst rankings are 88 on third down success allowed and 81 on first downs allowed (which also ranks us 9th in the Sun Belt). We tend to give up the big play too often having given up 79 plays of more than 10 yards in six games. Strangely, our defensive strength is our pass defense. We've lost Warner for the season and Lee, our leading tackler at the time, for almost an entire game, yet are the third best pass defense in the SBC. We also show some strength in sacks (2nd conf) and turnover margin (3rd conf). Both are in the 30s nationally. Special Teams: Average Ranking 86 Nationally Conference Ranking: 7th Kickoffs and punting keep us away from being the very worst but punt returns, punt return coverage, and kickoff return coverage are near the poorest in the FBS. Opponent's punting and our field goal percentage are both ranked 102. We do poorly with our kickoff returns and PAT percentage. I believe that we have won the special teams battle only once this year. Riddle had those great special teams at Boise, how can he be doing so poorly here? Even Atterberry's punting is not what it has been.

  6. I hope whoever performs better in 2013 in Spring/2-days will get the nod. You don't just sit the better football player because the kid ahead of him is a senior. I think we both can agree Brock has more football upside than DT, and that it didn't work out at the JUCO. What's hard to get about fans wanting the best players on the field? That's all I want. I hope Brock has/is getting his act together. We need the QB position to take a step up yesterday.

  7. Mark my words, 25K plus, no doubt. You guys aren't students, you aren't on campus every day seeing what I see. In my time here, I've never, ever, ever, ever, seen them hype a game like this. Ads ALL OVER campus, daily email reminders, multiple ticket locations....they're going to go WELL over the 8K student tickets, and it'll bleed into the GA section without a doubt. There have been commercials, ads in businesses (remember the local business competition to see who can sell the most 2 for 10 tickets...), et cetera times infinity. Honestly, 25K would be a disappointment in my mind from the amount of hype for this game. The only reason we won't get there would be because of some apathetic alumni. Get the hell to the game, the students will be there, and so will the community. Pay a babysitter, do what you need to do. This is a once in a decade type of opportunity for UNT...a NATIONALLY TELEVISED FREAKING HOME GAME. Anything other than the funeral of a close family member, or a job commitment you can't get out of, and I call weaksauce on your excuse.

  8. At the risk of getting back into the JUCO qb competition at Scottsdale, Brock did get a lot of snaps in the one game/scrimmage that he played. He threw for 103 yards, 2 tds, 2 ints, and had 53 yards rushing. I don't know how much the other qbs played but it sounded like the game was a 4-quarter scrimmage, which would mean Berglund probably took more than 33% of the snaps to put up these numbers. You're misinformed or not reading enough about the situation if you think he was buried on the depth chart by any means.

  16. Garret Gilbert was a high school God, and he's got the worst QB rating in the country. We'll hopefully have a better idea of what Berglund's got 6-10 months from now. At this point, I just hope they both show up next year healthy and ready to compete. http://www.cfbstats.com/2012/leader/national/player/split01/category02/sort01.html

  22. I was able to talk a few people from work into coming out for the game on Tuesday. These people are not hard core Mean Green fans like us. They are casual fans that want to get behind UNT and be at Apogee for the ESPN broadcast. I hope coach Mac can go out and speak to the students and get them fired up to come out for this game. If he can do that, we might see around 20,000 for this game. If he doesn't, or can't, our attendance could be much lower.

  23. I agree that we don't know how the good guys will do, nor do we know which team will "show up" based on what we have seen so far this year...But I do know that we will see a team that will go out and fight hard to win! I know we will see a team that won't give up...there is no quit in this team...and I know we will see a team that will do all it can to represent themselves and UNT and its student body well. I fully expect to see a hard fought game with the good guys coming out on top in a close one. If I had to put numbers to it...I'd say...DT hits a late TD and Olen follows up with the extra point for a 24-17 win. I expect to be as excited after this game ends for the future of the Mean Green's season as I was bummed out after the home loss to Troy in one that really should have been won. This team remembers....this team does not want that to happen at home again! This team will be and is ready. Believe it and be there to see it IN PERSON!

  24. Threat? No, asking you to avoid the verbal diarrhea you are trying to insight. I wasn't talking about football. You claim people are looking down noses when you clearly are. Passive aggressive references as well. Yes Captain Obvious, you guys have a better football team. Football aside is what you missed. People will bash your school for its hypocrisy. One players DUI is a shame. Hardly newsworthy in my opinion. The drug trafficking organization ingrained into the highest visibility section of the University is, well, criminal. Criminal conspiracy anyway. Especially, awful and hypocritical for a Christian School. Unlike you I won't look down my nose at anyone or laugh at the punchline of a dope dealing football team at a Christian University. Unless it's jokingly told. That is what I wanted to avoid. You shouldn't come here with the holier than thou superiority nonsense when you carry a small stick. I'll take our hippies. Just sayin... I like and respect your school, regardless of a few bad apples, or you on a soap box. Some of my friends went there and we joke back and forth about the same ole nonsense. The recent ammo is funny over beers. However, you are delusional to think you can come on this board and anyone is going to have a discussion as you lecture from the cheap seats. Even more laughable is you are the one spending your time on our board. Additionally, I'll take my school, we are in a different league and we can leave it at that.

  27. Look. It was a fun week with you last week. You rattled up alot of people. Lots of yuks. But the way it works is AFTER the game we play against your team, if you decide to stick around, it's usually for well-wishing, or general questions... not continued trash talking. Isn't there a UAB board for you to sign up on?

  29. We're likely not going to file this straggler. He doesn't get us the info, it's not our responsibility to camp out all weekend waiting for him to pick up the phone on our Nth attempt to call him.

  30. I'm not crazy about DT's overall management of the game, but he does a few things very well. We talk about the O-line being good and they are, but DT does a lot to help them too. He is very adept at getting rid of the ball when the pocket collapses. He doesn't turn the ball over, period. He is smart about his handoffs...sticks it right in their gut. He doesn't have "Happy Feet" like Vizza and to some extent, Dodge. I'd say, at the risk of pissing off Canales, he really just needs a big time QB coach.

  41. I have attended every game that Derek Thompson has played in his North Texas career except for watching two road games this season on TV.....we all know Coach Mac prides himself in winning the turnover battle and our QB not getting sacked which obviously can limit the chances Derek takes or the plays he can make....I have seen too many good games from Derek to not feel confident in him for the rest of the season and next year.

  42. Even more amazing was that those statistics didn't translate to a single win.

  43. Struggled a bit? All DT has done this year is struggle. Even the passes he completes are wobbly or straight ducks. He doesn't have the talent to be a starting DI QB. I don't know what you've seen that makes you think otherwise.

  44. It really is time for you to get a life and move on. I am thinking you probably still live at home with your mother. Go play on another team's board now...that's how it works. It WAS fun for awhile and you made some good points...it's over. Call it a day.....and think about moving out of your mother's home.
