  2. I don't think he's saying he hopes any of these scenarios happen, I think he's just saying HOW any other QB would start next year other than Derek.

  3. All - I will be taking a leave of absence from this site and from being a part of UNT Athletics for the time being. I lost my wife last week, and frankly, UNT is a big part of who we are together and other than keeping track of the teams from a far, being an active part in all of this hurts too much right now. Here is my wife's obituary - http://turrentinejacksonmorrow.com/component/tjmremembrancenter/michele-jamison-47831 I didn't come on here for a pity or to air my life to everyone - but I wanted the folks on here to know me in the real world to know why I'm not around. I'm sure I'll be back at some point, but right now, I have to focus on myself and my family. Go Mean Green!

  4. The ESPN college blog has been running a feature on out of conference schedules for all the college basketball teams. It's pretty cool if you follow a team in a bigger conference because you can quickly see who the other teams in the conference are playing. They didn't do one for the Sun Belt but they did include North Texas in the "others" category. It's nice to see North Texas getting mentioned on the blog. And it's also nice to have a really good schedule. NORTH TEXAS Toughest: at Creighton (Nov. 9), NIT Season Tip-Off (Nov. 12-23), at Saint Louis (Dec. 5) Next-toughest: Lehigh (Dec. 20) The rest: Cameron (Nov. 16), Texas-Arlington (Nov. 28), Louisiana-Lafayette (Dec. 1), Jackson State (Dec. 8), Southeastern Louisiana (Dec. 16) Toughness scale (1-10): 9 -- Tony Mitchell could lead the Mean Green to a regional round upset of Kansas State in the NIT Season Tip-Off. And if that happens, a matchup with Virginia at MSG could happen, with Michigan or Pitt waiting in the wings. Even if the program stumbles, however, road trips to Creighton and SLU, a pair of top-25 squads, will boost its nonconference schedule in Tony Benford’s first season as head coach. C.J. McCollum and Lehigh come to Denton five days before Christmas for a meaningful mid-major matchup. No complaints for this slate. http://espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketballnation/post/_/id/65132/nonconference-schedule-analysis-others-2

  6. A few points: A.) Let's talk improvement--the last time we went to Houston, Rice beat us 77-21--only because they took the 4th quarter off. This year, we lost to UH 44-21. We are 33 points better in just 4 short years (sarcasm alert, but the point is we are better). B.) Recruiting at UNT will always be a challenge until we actualy win. Nobody else that we recruit against in Texas, Oklahoma, or Louisiana have had the negative issues that hang over us still today. Apogee, McCarney, Rawlins, RV, tailgating, CUSA, etc...they all are light years better than what most of us dealt with at UNT Football as fans, but the negative view of UNT football from its own alumni, the lack of support from the students, faculty, and citizenry of the town, the local sports media, and, probably, the worst of all, the negative views of our football program with Texas HS coaches, they all combine to give you classes that are subpar comapred to all of the schools mentioned earlier. Texas State and UTSA don't face anything close to the negative information that UNT does. Texas State sells their future under Coach Fran, UTSA sells their future under Coach Coker in a big city ready to support them, all while North Texas deals with the outrageously negative view that most outside folks have of this school, city, and program. We have no one to blame but ourselves for the predicament that we are in with our W-L record. From never being in the SWC club to dropping down to 1-aa purgatory for 12 looonnnnggg years to playing in the perceived worst FBS conference for the last 11 years in the SBC, it all has combined to put us in this situation. The good news is that McCarney is a good rebuilding coach--this is his specialty. He has energy (at least for now), which helps on the recruiting front. He may not get many decent recruits from Texas HS right now, but he is helping to show the all-important TX HS coaches that it is a different day in Denton. Apogee and CUSA will play even bigger roles in selling our program in the future. I will say this, because I believe it with all my heart, but if McCarney can't turn it around here when he is done, I'm not sure anyone can do it here. It takes a special kind of "involved" coach here in Denton--you have do a LOT MORE than just x's and o's and recruiting. You have to CONSTANTLY sell the program and try to change the minds of the students, faculty, and citizens in Denton that have been told not to care about UNT athletics, for many different reasons. I believe that Coach Mac is that guy, though. I think that Year 3 and beyond will show all of us that he is definitely the right guy for our situation.

  9. I made an attempt to create a spreadsheet with the North Texas roster, including 2 deep depth chart and store it using Google Docs. Try the following link to see if you can open it: https://docs.google....S3c&output=html Once you start playing around by filtering the data based on starter/backup, recruiter, position, experience, etc... it gives you a little better picture of what kind of depth we have at certain positions. You can also see that there are still 2/3rds of our starters left over from TD players, but 2/3rds of our backups are Coach Mac players. Not surprising that our QB, RB, all WRs, and TE are Dodge players. With Coach Mac's propensity for running the ball, it is not surprising to see that he already has 3 of his recruits on the offensive line. Interestingly, the defensive line is mostly Dodge holdovers. Anyway, I thought it might be interesting to others. You should be able to copy and paste locally into your own spreadsheet program if you want to play around with the data. I tried to make the document public, but let me know if you have problems opening the document. If you see anything that looks incorrect, let me know.

  12. This may be true for a few but I believe that the majority are not condemning DT but rather feel that Berglund has more tools for success. Derek's strengths are that he is mechanically sound, throws quick short to medium passes well and does not turn the ball over often. He is far from the worst quarterback that we've had. His apparent weaknesses are overthrowing long passes and inability to pick up open receivers. He also lacks deception. He is the 4th/5th best quarterback in the Sun Belt Conference. this is his ranking within the following categories: pass attempts - 4th; completions - 5th; completion percentage (10 or more passes) - 12th; total yards - 4th; yards per attempt - 5th; touchdowns - 5th; interceptions - 2nd; quarterback rating - 6th; and yards per game - 4th. Berglund was much higher-rated coming out of high school. Rivals ranked him the 15th best quarterback in 2011 and Phil Steele has him at #28 with his system. Suffice it to say, the scouts thought well of him. I'm certainly not qualified to say who is better but he appears to have a tremendous upside. All that I'm saying is give Berglund a fair and honest chance and put the best quarterback on the field. I believe that will happen.

  13. I have attended every game that Derek Thompson has played in his North Texas career except for watching two road games this season on TV.....we all know Coach Mac prides himself in winning the turnover battle and our QB not getting sacked which obviously can limit the chances Derek takes or the plays he can make....I have seen too many good games from Derek to not feel confident in him for the rest of the season and next year.

  15. I mostly agree. Too much has to happen between now and then, and anyone hanging their hopes on Berglund at this point is wishcasting. I DO think that it will be an open competition Thompson next year, because that's what I believe good coaches do. I believe they had one this year, and Thompson, as he did last year, proved better than the other options (which I've stated tells you all you need to know about them). Berglund's reported skillset should make him the best competition next year for Thompson. And the fact that he's not an incoming freshman increases the urgency to get him on the field. I personally like how our QB situation is going to be set up next year. You'll have an experienced senior in Thompson, a highly touted, highly recruited athletic QB in Berglund (with some years to play), and an outstanding freshman (knock on wood). IF (and that's a big if) things go as hoped, we'll have the kind of depth and skill at the QB position that's been needed for years. But at this point, I can't: a ) Root against our current starting QB, as doing so would be wishing failure upon a season that's currently still under way (and winnable) and b ) Pin my hopes on a guy who hasn't played meaningful football in years If a) happens and we continue to lose, then I'll have no choice but to start looking towards b ). But until that time, I'll continue to root for the Mean Green that's on the field.

  16. I would believe that UH can out recruit us, but I don't see how the likes of TX State and UTSA do, other than the fact that both of their coaches have a better winning percentage than Mac, overall.

  17. http://collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/10/10/mid-major-power-rankings-the-top-15/ The definition of what, exactly, makes a “mid-major” program is one of the more contentious debates in college basketball. Is it simply every program outside of the six conferences associated with the BCS? Does it have to do with the amount of money spent on the program? Or the history of successes of the program? Or the size of the fan base? Or who they are able to recruit? To simplify things, we eliminated everyone from the BCS leagues, the Atlantic 10, the Mountain West, Conference USA and the top three programs — BYU, Gonzaga and St. Mary’s — out of the WCC. We feel it is more important to celebrate some of the little guys than it is to include teams on a list they — and their fans — want no part of. So without further ado, here are our Mid-major Power Rankings: 1. Creighton: The Bluejays should not be a secret to anyone heading into the season. They are going to be ranked in every national poll that has any credibility and have a preseason NBCSports.com First Team All-American on the roster in Doug McDermott. Offensively, Creighton is one of the most entertaining teams in the country to watch, as they pass and shoot the ball as well as anyone in the country. But will they be able to get stops? Creighton ranked 178th in defensive efficiency, according to Kenpom, last season. Player to know: Sophomore forward Doug McDermott averaged 23.2 points and 8.2 boards last year. Can’t-miss game: Creighton kicks off the season against the No. 2 team in these rankings on Nov. 9th, but dates with Wisconsin (Nov. 23rd) and St. Joseph’s (Dec. 1st) are worth your time as well. 2. North Texas: Tony Mitchell is the reason that the Mean Green will have plenty of chances to play in front of NBA scouts this season, but there is more to this team than simply a potential lottery pick. Chris Jones and Jordan Williams should both be eligible after missing the second half of last season due to academics. Alzee Williams returns for another season, as does Oklahoma State transfer Roger Franklin. New head coach Tony Benford also adds former Marquette and Oklahoma-signee TJ Taylor. There’s a lot of talent here. Player to know: Sophomore forward Tony Mitchell averaged 14.7 points, 10.0 boards and 3.0 blocks last year. He’ll be a first round draft pick. Can’t-miss game: Mitchell vs. McDermott on Nov. 9th will be fun, as will a date with St. Louis on Dec. 5th.

  18. Honest question but how many schools do you think would be lining up for DT as a one year rental. I don't think there are many teams out there thinking "we have a really good team coming back next season but Derek Thompson would really put us over the top"

  23. A couple of weeks ago Coach Mac on the Coach Mac Show who is our head football coach was asked about how good our quarterbacks were at quarterbacking and who he thought was going to start next year for the Mean Green of the University of North Texas. He really didn't talk about anyone but Brock and how well he thought he would press for the starting job next year. I'd say there's pretty much a tryout between him and DT right now, and that Brock is winning. DT needs to pick it up. A little competition can be a good thing for both DT and Brock.

  24. Isn't different/creative what TD tried? His idea of opening up the other defense was to first let the opposing offense score 30 so their defense started playing prevent and then we score. How did that work out for us?
    1 point
  25. Probably. But since he hasn't ever played in an FBS football game, I'd hesitate personally to make any claims as to his skill level. We've had a number of QBs that were faster than DT since Scott Hall, and how many games did they win? Also, anybody who says that DT does not possess an accurate deep ball is blessed with a short memory, and has forgotten much of last year (the Troy game comes to mind immediately), and must not have seen the perfect sideline pass he made 30 yards downfield to Chancellor, over two defenders, in the FAU game this year (of at least two perfect deep balls in the game).

  31. Here's the difference between the two: (1) Thompson has taken some snaps against real college competition (2) Berglund has not...for years. I like Thompson. With his experience, I bet he's a better shot at keeping the job than Berglund. Also, Berglund appears to be a kid where you can't count the chickens before the eggs hatch. He's been here, he's been there. Thompson has stuck it out through thin and thin here. I think he's the one to take us into the thick.

  36. Interesting this topic came up. I went back and watched this video of Burglund again 3 days ago. If we can get this Burglund, he has to be the favorite. We need a more mobile guy that can pull the ball down and get you about a 6 yard run; to keep a drive going. With less time on the field, the defense plays much better as well.
