http://collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/10/10/mid-major-power-rankings-the-top-15/ The definition of what, exactly, makes a “mid-major” program is one of the more contentious debates in college basketball. Is it simply every program outside of the six conferences associated with the BCS? Does it have to do with the amount of money spent on the program? Or the history of successes of the program? Or the size of the fan base? Or who they are able to recruit? To simplify things, we eliminated everyone from the BCS leagues, the Atlantic 10, the Mountain West, Conference USA and the top three programs — BYU, Gonzaga and St. Mary’s — out of the WCC. We feel it is more important to celebrate some of the little guys than it is to include teams on a list they — and their fans — want no part of. So without further ado, here are our Mid-major Power Rankings: 1. Creighton: The Bluejays should not be a secret to anyone heading into the season. They are going to be ranked in every national poll that has any credibility and have a preseason NBCSports.com First Team All-American on the roster in Doug McDermott. Offensively, Creighton is one of the most entertaining teams in the country to watch, as they pass and shoot the ball as well as anyone in the country. But will they be able to get stops? Creighton ranked 178th in defensive efficiency, according to Kenpom, last season. Player to know: Sophomore forward Doug McDermott averaged 23.2 points and 8.2 boards last year. Can’t-miss game: Creighton kicks off the season against the No. 2 team in these rankings on Nov. 9th, but dates with Wisconsin (Nov. 23rd) and St. Joseph’s (Dec. 1st) are worth your time as well. 2. North Texas: Tony Mitchell is the reason that the Mean Green will have plenty of chances to play in front of NBA scouts this season, but there is more to this team than simply a potential lottery pick. Chris Jones and Jordan Williams should both be eligible after missing the second half of last season due to academics. Alzee Williams returns for another season, as does Oklahoma State transfer Roger Franklin. New head coach Tony Benford also adds former Marquette and Oklahoma-signee TJ Taylor. There’s a lot of talent here. Player to know: Sophomore forward Tony Mitchell averaged 14.7 points, 10.0 boards and 3.0 blocks last year. He’ll be a first round draft pick. Can’t-miss game: Mitchell vs. McDermott on Nov. 9th will be fun, as will a date with St. Louis on Dec. 5th.6 points

Good News : I asked Brad Henz ( the guy who does the ballislife videos) to come out & film the dunk contest. He said he would make it ! Should be a sweet video6 points

All - I will be taking a leave of absence from this site and from being a part of UNT Athletics for the time being. I lost my wife last week, and frankly, UNT is a big part of who we are together and other than keeping track of the teams from a far, being an active part in all of this hurts too much right now. Here is my wife's obituary - http://turrentinejacksonmorrow.com/component/tjmremembrancenter/michele-jamison-47831 I didn't come on here for a pity or to air my life to everyone - but I wanted the folks on here to know me in the real world to know why I'm not around. I'm sure I'll be back at some point, but right now, I have to focus on myself and my family. Go Mean Green!4 points

The coach slept with the players mom. That's gotta be some kind of recruiting violation ...4 points

But wait . . . according to your reasoning, Texas State beat Houston; therefore, Texas State is superior to Houston. But, as you said, Texas State and North Texas are both schools on an equal level. So, North Texas is also superior to Houston.4 points

Just letting everyone in Austin know that I've reserved the back room at Lavaca St Bar and Grill for our game against ULL on ESPN2. Its a great bar with solid food and its their Tecate Tuesday- where $5 will get you a Tecate and a shot of Cazadores Reposado tequila Lavaca St is at the corner of 5th and Colorado. Its a great place to watch game, and the wait staff is friendly in their customer service and easy on the eyes as well. *edit the $5 shot and beer is actually $4 as their manager told me last night3 points

With all due respect to your just satin, Brock is enrolled here and having no issues eligibility wise. Don't think you need to concern yourself too much but I guess you can never be sure.3 points

Not to mention supplying the kid with apparell since the kid was born. What kind of program are they running up there, anyway?3 points

Interesting this topic came up. I went back and watched this video of Burglund again 3 days ago. If we can get this Burglund, he has to be the favorite. We need a more mobile guy that can pull the ball down and get you about a 6 yard run; to keep a drive going. With less time on the field, the defense plays much better as well.3 points

I'm totally blown away with the marketing for the ULL game. When I was watching the Texans on ESPN, I saw like five commercials, all the restaurants in the Denton area are running a deal/free ticket thing of some sort, on campus there are posters EVERYWHERE, and even in Fort Worth there are miscellanious stores and restaurants advertising the game. Unfortunately it looks like the cancelling classes thing failed, but they're giving the students free popcorn (hilarious, it's all going to be on the field). This is why I think attendance will be huge. But why does it take a ESPN game to market our football team?2 points

Height? Weight? 40 time? If that Creighton coach can do it, why can't we?2 points

We need to organize all of the tailgaters at Fouts to apply as much peer pressure on those students who park there and think they will be going to class on Tuesday. On Tuesday evening be on the lookout for students parking at Fout's carrying books as they are probably headed to their night class. First offer them a beer, "Come on man, it's just one beer. You still have plenty of time to get to the GAB by 6:30." The next thing they know they are sitting in Apogee.2 points

I just haven't seen any progression from DT. I know we don't have a weapons but when you're flaunting a 200 yd passing performence things aren't good.2 points

You want an unbelievable stat? D Thompson in his first year had a 100% completion rate Averaged 20 yards per pass and One in three passes went for touchdowns2 points

Brock didn't leave CC just because he couldn't get a starting job. There could be a lot of reasons for that. Knowing that Brock at most would be one and done may have made coaches less inclined to start him ... especially considering he probably needs time to get back into football after so much time off. I'm just saying there's a lot of reason why Brock may not have started. I believe the main issue is that if Brock played at CC he wouldn't be able to transfer to UNT until the summer ... and that's only if he earned something like 18 credits per semester. I believe Vito reported that when Brock signed. It would have been very difficult for him to transfer to UNT in time to earn the starting job. By transfering when he did he'll have nearly a year before the first game in 2013 to learn the playbook and earn the job. While Brock may turn out to be nothing special, in my mind his short time at the CC has no impact on my impression of him as a player. I'm cautiously optimistic that he'll be a good one for us.2 points

Struggled a bit? All DT has done this year is struggle. Even the passes he completes are wobbly or straight ducks. He doesn't have the talent to be a starting DI QB. I don't know what you've seen that makes you think otherwise.2 points

I'm not an anti-DT in any way, but I would like to see Ozzy get a shot. About time to see what he has got, because next season that may not be possible.2 points

Sometimes coaches will put players in to shake things up. I think it was Buick's last year when the offense was horrendous and he decided to put the entire second and third string O-line in in the 4th quarter of a game? They walked onto the field and drove down for a score. Anyone remember that? I remember he called the starters green or white team, and the others visa versa. Someone with better memory might be able to elaborate.2 points

I know exactly what i'm talking about - TSUS is the Texas State University System, of which, Texas State University is a member, "flagship" or not. You'll note, that TSUS is not a system that includes Texas Southern or Tarleton State. It does, however, include Texas State. Somebody should tell them that the correct way to do it is TXSTUS. Until such time, plenty of people will refer to Texas State University, correctly, as TSU. And, as pointed out, TXST isn't even an acronym. It's an abbreviation, chosen arbitrarily. The system is using an acronym, a correct one, and one that you can expect people to use for the words Texas-State-University. Once again, you're clearly wrong, but I'm not sure what business you'd have in this discussion, since you've never once gotten our own acronym correct. And this is a dumb discussion, proven by your appearance in it. Nobody cares what TSU wants to be called.2 points

Meh. I was about to type something in response, but in the end who cares. This one of the most trivial arguments I've ever been involved in. I just wanted to chime in with my opinion on it, there's really nothing worth going back and forth on. Also, TXST is not even an acronym, its an abbreviation.2 points

unfortunately you don't know what you are talking about the Texas State University System existed long before TxState was named TxState and TxState University is specifically NOT the flagship university of that system because that system operates with a model that does not have a flagship.....so the fact that the System uses one abbreviation has no meaning to what a single non-flagship member of their system wishes to use as the abbreviation for their specific university1 point

We seem to have lost a few players to Tulane in the recurring wars this year. If Tulane goes winless ( a possibility) I wonder if any would reconsider1 point

Well, since we know they are really good against the run, maybe we will spread it out and throw it around a little? Maybe even a first down pass or 3? Nah...1 point

Look. It was a fun week with you last week. You rattled up alot of people. Lots of yuks. But the way it works is AFTER the game we play against your team, if you decide to stick around, it's usually for well-wishing, or general questions... not continued trash talking. Isn't there a UAB board for you to sign up on?1 point

Tax deadline day (extended 1040s for the 1%). That usually means a happy hour/night of drinking with the coworkers. I actually took initiative to plan this year's party to take place on Wednesday, just so I can make this. You're all welcome.1 point
