It was blatantly evident to fans the other night that Houston had superior athletes all over the field. Remember the UH program has been winning a lot of games recently: 2007: 8-5 (loss to TCU in Texas Bowl) 2008: 8-5 (win over AF in Armed Forces Bowl) 2009: 10-3 (loss to AF in Armed Forces Bowl) 2010: 5-7 (lost top 2 QB's against UCLA in Game #3 after blowing out Texas State and UTEP by an average of 61-26) 2011: 13-1 (win over Penn State in TicketCity Bowl) That program had Case Keenum and Robert Griffin III committed at the same time. There is clearly talent there, and they have been recruiting in a different stratosphere than North Texas for many years. It showed up the other night. Their kids were bigger, faster, and stronger as a whole. I am certainly disappointed that we did not play better when Vegas had the game at 11.5 to 13 point differential; and I believe it is great that the expectations around this program have risen. However, we have to take a step back and be somewhat realistic at times: LSU: Severely out-classed TSU: Much better athletes than TSU across the board (though there are a few on that team that would look good in Green---especially the FS#5) KSU: Out-classed but not nearly as large of disparity as LSU. Out-classed more in terms of experience. Troy: Pretty much even on athletes with Troy. Folks, this is an improvement. A few years ago we did not belong on the field with Troy. FAU: Better athletes than FAU in some areas and not so in other areas. Houston: Out-classed in at least 70% of the personnel matchups. People can knock McCarney's recruiting all they want to. The bottom line is these younger players are better. #1 Power, #5 Busby, #7 Davis, #8 Trice, #9 Harris, #22 Jimmerson, #27 Lee, #49 Mason, #52 Akunne, #62 Lemon, #91 Orr, #95 Lincoln are all nice players who seemed to belong on the field the other night from an athletic standpoint. It just takes time to develop these kids. We are so much better from a strength and speed standpoint than we were; but we clearly have a long ways to go to compete with the Houstons, Tulsas, La Techs of the world (which is a realistic expectation heading into C-USA) McCarney is getting these kids with good frames who can run a little bit and is turning them over to Wintrich. We are already much improved, but let's be real and accept that we are still a ways away. It's not easy to call an offensive or defensive game as a coordinator when you are overmatched athletically. LSU and Kansas State did not expose the defense as greatly with their running-based schemes. It was enhanced dramatically the other night with Houstons spread offense and having their players out in space. Offensively there are limitations there too. The QB has limitations and the WR corps does not have a lot of game-changing players at this time. Two times the other night #9 Harris (a freshman burner at WR) is running open well behind the player covering him and the QB did not see him or did not attempt to throw to him. What do you do about this? All you can do is keep designing these plays to get your best players the ball and it is up to them to execute. We are a few years away from really being where we want to be, but Coach McCarney and most of his staff are outstanding coaches. This thing is going to be a lot of fun in a few years, but there are going to be some really difficult bumps along the way. Let's get behind them and support them as they dig this program out of the ditch it was in and build it the right way for long term success!4 points

Well, this year, Houston and Troy are 2 of those losses. It wasn't a body bag game that kept us from starting 2-2. It was Troy. And then Houston. 2011 - Last year, we opened with FIU and got blown out. If we'd have won that game... 2-2. Ignoring those "predetermined losses", we're talking about Tulsa and FIU. 2010 - Rice, Army, ULL - Which of these were the body bag games or predetermined losses? 2009 - Ball State, Ohio, Middle Tennessee, UL Lafayette... Those were 4 of our first 5 games. So much is being made of those body bag games, but there seems to be an outright denial of the absolute truth... we've gotten beaten down by EVERYONE in recent years, with regularity. Body bag games aren't killing us - everyone is.4 points

The first and most important step is to eliminate the roadblocks that destroy every season; paycheck games to Oklahoma, Alabama, Texas, LSU, etc. We can fib and call them opportunity games or whatever, but those games and the ensuing 1 and 3 (or worse) starts every year taint each season, and eventually the whole program. North Texas hasn't had an average (2 and 2 against Div 1 teams) start to a season since 1980. That's a very long time with 1 and 3 or worse starts. It makes it extremely difficult for fans to be excited about the remaining games. Each season may be viewed as salvageable but that's hardly anything to get excited about. Stop that predetermined losing and fan support and recruiting will rapidly improve.4 points

After looking at several blogs in here ...negative blogs....want to invite you all to go out and look at our "strength in schedule" vs other SBC opponents. NO ONE comes close to our schedule in difficulty. Yes, we should have won Troy game...but we beat that dead dog enough on why that game got away from us. But NO ONE has a non conf schedule like we did with LSU, K. ST. and Houston. Honestly, these are games that we could have won, but are they games we "should" have won??!!! MAYBE ...MAYBE Houston. We are about to get into the conf schedule. There is no way we should give up on a team that 3 of the 4 losses come from previously mentioned. These are our classmates, friends, relatives..some of us our own kids....support them like they are. Guess we will see who is TRUE MEAN GREEN next Tuesday night with ULL game.3 points

Video Game tribute? Seriously? What a bunch of hip-hop nonsense. When the great Hayden Fry was here the Green Brigade did a wonderful tribute to books. That is what college is about. Football. Pageantry. Books. Not this waste of time fad called video games. Today's band could certainly stand to take a page from that.3 points

This really is a non-issue. You are getting the ball back 1st in the second half, so why take the risk in that situation. The interesting part of the exchange with George on this matter: Mac says he didn't want to risk a turnover and not trusting the passing game, then has to be reminded by George that UNT got the bal back 1st in the second half before including that in the decision process. That tells me, along with running the ball 9 out of the 10 first 1st downs, that Mac does not trust any part of the passing game. If we can't run against 8 and 9 man fronts the rest of the year, get ready for nothing more than 14-21 point productions a game from the offense, with 21 being VERY optimistic. This doesn't bode well at all going forward3 points

He needs to play this card...never. Otherwise you start to get a team that thinks the system is broke.3 points

Tell us how great UH's attendance is again. Demand is so high you had to raise ticket prices right? The Rob is rabid and crazy right? Want to see an apathetic fanbase look in the mirror. UH filled about 2/3's of its stadium coming off a 13-1 season just because they lost a few games to open its season. Horrible apathy.2 points

Hey CougarKing, when did you graduate from Houston ? What was/were your degree(s) in ?2 points

But wait . . . according to your reasoning, Texas State beat Houston; therefore, Texas State is superior to Houston. But, as you said, Texas State and North Texas are both schools on an equal level. So, North Texas is also superior to Houston.2 points

DT vs Berglund ... since we know what DT can do I hope Berglund steps up and takes the job in spring ball. At this point I'd say it's 50-50 until we see what Berglund can do in spring ball.2 points

This is the way to build for sustained success down the road. As the time passes in this system the you be playing with a greater number of upper classmen with redshirts ready to move in the next year. The problem is this is going to hurt a team for the first two or three years. It's like saving money for tomorrow, clearly it's the best way to operate but goes against the need for instant success many want.2 points

Spends most of his career at Penn State... Now he'll spend basically the rest of his life at the State Penn.2 points

McCarney is building a team the right way. He is redshirting as many players as he can and he still has 20 freshmen & sophomores in the 2 deep lineup. Put freshmen in the weight room and let them develop. It will pay off in the long run.2 points

Good rundown of the youngsters up front! They will continue to develop under Wintrich this fall and early Spring; and hopefully will maximize their opportunities during spring ball. The prospects of having 6'4" to 6"6 Defensive Ends who can run move to go along with either the larger 300lb Tackles or the lighter ones (Lincoln, Orr, Watson) are exciting. We can have a versatile, athletic front and I would bet we look up in a few years and this is a strength of this team.2 points

I have been able to attend few UNT games, but was honored to attend at Robertson Stadium in Houston on Saturday night. There was a great green crowd and the family I sat with was more than enjoyable to visit with as we are old friends. What I came away with, and yes, I do follow the team, was that you guys pay a coach way too much , when all of you can coach free on a blog. I hear all the Todd Dodge stuff til I'm amazed you can't come up with any other sort of an excuse. If my memory serves me, and it may not, your junior class will be the last of the Dodge recruits and then you guys will be winning Conference USA every year. Congratulations! What confuses me the most is, you guys totally dislike the quarterback DT, as you call him. He's a Dodge recruit, he's not good, he can't pass but I think there are 2 McCarney recruits that stand on the side line of every game. Osborne and McNulty? maybe another one, not sure. You talk about giving McCarney 4 years to recruit, you are asking to put the freshmen kids in and give them a chance. AND, you guys also saved a scholarship for a quarterback who was DISMISSED from Kansas and didn't win the job at a Community College. I know, I know, your beat writer Mr. Vito, LOVES THIS KID and touts on his 15th ranking in the nation. SO hopefully, he will prove to be the bread winner you need. The funny thing is other than Vito's article, that states, Mr. Berglund left Kansas because of a coaching change...have any of you REALLY read information on this guy? Weiss dismissed him from Kansas and the coach at Scottsdale CC said in an interview they ALL thought it was best that Berglund enroll at UNT immediately. HMMMMMM, just throwing it out there, but all of a sudden, this young man WAS able to transfer AND the community college coach couldn't wait to help him out of his program. Just interesting reading if you look......I also know you can't believe everything you read, because STOJK or however you spell it will be back next year, hopefully beating the hell out of your opponents on the field instead of at bars. Also, information that can be found when you look for it. I'm amazed that Daddy's post practice information on the blog openly. Mr. McCareny closes his practices except to family and few others from what I understand from my North Texas friends, players families really aren't supposed to be discussing what goes on in practice. But just for fun, let's say at the GREEN/WHITE scrimmage, the 1st team played the 3rd team.....I believe afternoon practices go the same. So, Mr. Trussell, be VERY careful, how you post what your son says. Administrator, Coaches, Students, PLAYERS and fans ALL read this blog. Just putting that out there. Last but certainly not least, I do believe you guys have a good coach with McCarney, but good coaches win with what they have. June Jones proved that in Hawaii with kids that were not highly recruited. Yes, he is struggling a bit at SMU, but he's getting a few recruits UNT is not. WHY? That's a good question, you say. UNT does have to win before a 5 star recruit is going to turn down the UH's, Mississippi States and the Tulsa's of the world. UNT has playmakers, whether they were recrutied by Dodge, McCarney or Mickey Mouse, the coaching staff just has to keep pushing ahead with what they have. And hopefully, in the 2-4 more years, McCarney is here, you guys will be the shining Conference USA winners you want to be. Good Luck to the players and coaches against ULL on October 16th! Hold your heads up guys because what you do IS WAY HARDER than what we do sitting at a computer and typing what we think will change the college football world! GMG supporter! Win, lose or draw~2 points

Excellent post. Look at the facts, playing 10 or so scholarships short, and Jrs. and Srs. recruited by previous staff. You win with Srs. Coach Mac is playing with two classes of his recruits and he got a late start on his first class. Progress, look at the physical difference of the team compared with the team met when he first arrived. Look at the discipline improvment, academic improvement. Cheer the expectations , which are expressed every day. Support the program, the kids, the coaches. Better times are coming.2 points

I understand, but with all due respect to you, Taylor should be getting the best medical treatment possible along with daily treatment and rehab by professional trainers. I'm not saying it's not a serious injury, I'm just saying I would think it would be a possibility to get that shoulder healed over these next three months and have him ready by January. That may not be possible, but my point is if this is a possibility I would think it might be worth it for him to only play January, February, and March rather than sit out the whole year and retain an extra year of eligibility. This is the year that we have to put all our eggs in the basket so to speak and Taylor could be just the difference maker we might need come March.1 point

"Sir Calvin Wallace - biggest bust initially as he came to Denton in bad, bad shape -- has since rededicated himself and they hope he will someday be able to contribute." If I remember correctly, UNT was Wallace's only offer and he committed very early in the recruiting process. He sounds like a big time bust to me. So prove me wrong Sir Calvin. I heard you and you sounded like an old pro. And it was a really good question. Now we know why SIr Calvin couldn't crack the 2 deep. Really thought he had a chance to play immediately. Hopefully, he will be ready next season.1 point

He mentioned tackling wasn't what he wanted (lots of arm tackles etc.) and it sounded like it was something he wanted the team to focus on before the next game.1 point

So, I asked this question at the coaches show for me, but I figured you all would enjoy it too. I hope the delivery was ok. Me and an open mic could be recipe for discomfort and awkwardness. I really enjoyed watching the coach show in person for the first time, but be prepared. As a newbie, you are required to ask a question.1 point

Dude, everything you put on there, if not controlled for privacy, is out there FOREVER!! You don't have kids or a wife yet. Priorities change. Many employers won't hire you if you are irresponsible with social media, and they shouldn't.. As for your attitude, what about in 10 years, when you have a wife and 2 kids and are looking for the bog promotion. Ya, I know, your never getting married and will always be the greatest at what you do so it would never affect you. I've run across several people who have thought their Facebook could never affect then. I'm happy to say that they were completely wrong.1 point

At this point in our program, we just need to win. Doesn't matter who it is, but wins will attract recruits that will lead to wins against better teams ala K-State and BSU.1 point

Who you beat is the most important part of the equation. Beating FAU on national TV dues nothing. Truth be told, beating LaLa won't do that much, except in head to head recruiting. Gotta beat someone that matters.1 point

As much as we like to bash Dodge, one thing he did leave us with was a solid 2010 high school class. Zach Orr, Y'Barbo, Antonio Johnson, Chancellor, Bellazin, Will Wright, Teagarden, Olen, etc. That class didn't feature very many high school recruits, but the ones it did leave us with are valuable contributors. They, along with the 2011 class that was mainly Mac and some Dodge, are providing us the bulk of the depth to redshirt the 2012 freshman along with a few 2009 holdovers and walk-ons.1 point

He did not play for Kingwood last year. But he is back this year for his senior season. Since Josh did not play last year at KHS I did not know he was on some radars. But he mostly shines in slect ball. Their are no stars on Kingwood due to the passing mentaility and unselfish play. But great players have come out of the system. Nic Wise and Singletary did well in college and learned the discipline game well from Coach Huseman. NIc's Dad is a big time coach HS coach you may be aware of in this area. I am sure he hand picked where he wanted Nic to play during his career before he headed to Arizona. yes, that was Hunter's parents you met. He was coming off of an injury last year so hoping he will have a big senior season also. Fun to watch Hunter play, a Barkley like kid.1 point
