  1. Emmitt, I played college football back in .....well a long time ago. Schedules were so simple. My son is redshirted this year, his first year, and he has talked a length about their grueling schedule. 7 am to 9 pm with classes, meetings, practice, study hall...somewhere in there they have to find time to eat. I see men and women in the work force today that could not handle that type of schedule. Connor chose UNT because of Coach Mac and his staffs vision for the program. He had other opportunities within the conference, in the WAC and even the golden boys over in Dallas...but he saw the vision...so did his mom and I. The old phrase...."people buy from people" was never more appropriate. This is Coach Mac's 2nd season. "IT" is not built yet....but the foundation is poured and the frame is up. I was overly critical myself Sat after the game and Sunday morning. But after reading the many blogs and media....I came to realize and later posted.....It is not time to throw in the towel...IT IS TIME TO WAVE THE HELL OUT OF IT!!! In many cases, mine included, these are our boys out there on the football field. We would not have given up on them when they were growing up.... don't do it now.

  6. No way you can expect fans to drive up from Houston to watch that kind of performance every week. I highly doubt houstonmeangreen is going to quit going to UNT games forever, but I totally understand his attitude, and fans like him (who drive up to Denton from Houston) are DEFINITELY NOT the problem.

  7. Why does Vito continue to let Thompson's horrible play slide? The lack of "playmakers" is not this teams problem. A good QB makes solid players, as Vito calls most of our skill players, into "playmakers." Did anyone think Wes Welker was a great WR before he teamed up with Brady? Jimmerson is a playmaker, but he won't become a stud until he gets the bulk of the carries at RB. It's obvious he's our best back, IMO.

  8. Thats really the only legitimate argument for Thompson...

  9. What's weird is he benches his JR kicker for missing two field goals for a walk on true freshmen, but not his Junior QB for a junior backup QB in Osborne. If you're going to bench the kicker you also should have benched the QB. Both were failing us in the Red Zone..

  10. Just heard on Norm's show that Sean Bass was in a terrible car accident over the weekend and his girlfriend was killed by the drunk driver who hit them. Prayers for GMG.com's own (GreenGuyBass) Seabass and the family of the young lady who lost her life this weekend.

  11. In San Antonio for a weeekend and staying across from the Alamodome....the UTSA croud seems quite friendly and CUSA ready...and looking foreward to playing NT.Wish we had a 2013 schedule......They played a fine game today......Go Mean Green!!!!!!!

  12. We've got one victory this season...and, it's over an FCS team. We are going to be in the C-USA next season. And, allegedly, the competition will be stiffer. I love Dan McCarney, but...we really are going to be needing some miracle/magical-type endings. Maybe like an Al Gore happy ending massage. I just don't see it. I'll enjoy seeing the likes of Southern Miss and Tulsa in the stadium for the next few year, but I gotta wonder about things. Recruiting has got to pick up in a major whey.

  13. You know, the Mean Green went on quite a streak in 2001 after losing their first conference game of the season... It's possible. Just need to execute.

  14. Yes, we should have won the game. Look at 3 missed fgs. But Div2 or crappy team? NO..Troy is ranked 10th in the nation in passing. OK..i have a son on the team and I will always be a fan and will show up for the games. Remember, Coach Mac is in his 2nd year. Dont know how many of yall have played college football, but it is proven every week that any given team can beat any team. In both LSU and Ks St we were 3-5 plays from winning or being a one score game. If you are waiting on a 12 - 0 team to come back, then on that premise, then Michigan would never sell out their games like they do every week. Im not trying to compare UNT to MIchigan, but students show up and show up in BIG numbers EVERY GAME. Oh yea...even the game a few years ago when Div 1-AA / Appalachian state beat them...did I say that any team could beat any team??? The foundation has been poured, the frame is up...help finish the construction project. MEAN GREEN is not just the football team, the basketball team, the soccer, volleyball, band or the knitting team....MEAN GREEN IS UNT. Dont throw in the towel....WAVE THE HELL OUT OF IT!!

  15. How does he do without a Kicking tee/block? Zach has the leg to kick it 60, i've seen it. Check out Ohlens videos and you'll see the exact same thing, even game film with rushers, a snap, and hold. Zach can get the job done and there is no denying that the problems Saturday were on him, the blocked FG @KSU was not (xtra PT...maybe). I don't see Zach shrinking from his responsibilities and I believe he will work hard to correct the problem. If Ohlen doesn't, then Paul (or someone else ) could get the call again and I think they will take advantage of the situation if it happens. You seem to like being critical of your sons teammates, you might want to chill a bit, at least until Connor is in the spotlight and others can return the favor. For the record, I like what I've seen out of Connor so far and I am excited about his future at North Texas! GMG

  16. It's not the board of regents' place to approve individual marketing commercials. The BOR helps form the long term strategies but not this one commercial. Same goes for individual budget line items. The BOR may approve the overall HSC marketing budget but might not have visibility to where all the moneys go as part of the marketing budget.

  17. Or, play defensive tackle? At what point are we allowed to point out that we aren't getting "highly rated" players? This was a point people made about the majority Dickey and Dodge's recruits. Does it seem like things have changed all that much so far? Don't misconstrue this as a knock on the recruit. My point is just this - because the level of recruit is about the same as we were getting under Dickey and Dodge, we'll see with McCarney whether or not coaching matters down here in the lower FBS programs that are trying to grow up. McCarney will sign his third class in February, and we will move into a new conference on July 1, 2013. We need bigger, better, faster, stronger...except against Memphis and UAB...and Tulane.

  18. We worry about the likes of UTSA and TXState as they put butts in the seats and pick up signature wins against opponents We worry about our inept offense on Saturday that may have scared students away when there was so much potential on the horizon We worry about predictability of the offense and our lack of big plays We forget it took Hayden Fry 3 years to post a winning record, and he had even less wins in year 2 than year 1 We forget it took Johnny Jones six years to get to the first NCAA tourney since 1988 after 5 mediocore seasons (look at us now!) We forget that there were 21k people there for TROY- yes it was family weekend, but show me the last time we had 20k for a Sun Belt team (FAU in 2009, that was homecoming) Football wise, my four years at UNT blew (2006-2010) so much to the point where I attended only 2 games in 2010 (thank god I'm a basketball fan) But unlike the last regime, I see signs of life in the second year of Mccarney. I like what he's building, and it can only get better. I look for a 2014 upset of Texas. Austin alums, if you still believe join me October 16 to watch the game (Location pending) , pound some brews, and see ESPN commentators butcher our great universities name

  19. They are putting more butts in the seats that anyone in the WAC. Second is Texas State. http://blog.mysanantonio.com/utsa/2012/09/utsas-home-attendance-no-1-in-wac-despite-drop-from-last-year/ Whether we admit it or not, these two schools' fanbases are excited about watching them play even lower level opponents.

  22. No, the biggest problem facing the program is losing games. Everyone (players, coaches, fans) feel like they have been kicked in the nuts after a lost like that. We'll spring back after we walk it off. Until then it still hurts.

  25. I don't wanna turn this into another thread where two groups snipe back and forth --- but Talons weren't "goons" in any fashion while I was there ('96-01) and we had a presence (even if unadvertised) at most sporting events. Weren't many people of any sort going to soccer, tennis, or volleyball back in the day -- but I went to my share.

  26. I seem to have a different view of this. IHMO, we have plenty of players who can make plays besides chancellor. They just need to be put into better positions (Bynes over the middle on a slant for instance, and Brown into more screens and dump passes) and they NEED SOMEONE WHO CAN CONSISTENTLY GET THE BALL INTO THEIR HANDS. We could have three receivers who were the second coming of Johnny Quinn, Ronnie Shanklin, and Casey Fitzgerald (or John Love) out on the field and the results would be exactly the same as Saturday night. None of them could do anything without the ball being placed within reasonable reach of them. I've kind of held my tongue on this subject until now, but the first, and main, playmaker you need out there is the QB. If we had a Scott Davis, Mitch Maher, Scott Hall, Jordan Case or Joe Stevenson out there with our current team, we would be 2-2 (or quite possibly 3-1) instead of 1-3.

  27. Time to put that atrocity behind us. Next week should be a breeze. If the Mean Green continue to play consistent ball away from Apogee, a win in Boca Raton should be a no-brainer. The Houston game will be the crux for attendance to the Tuesday night ESPN2 ULL game. Win @ FAU & @ Houston, and people will show up to see a 3-3 team. Lose @ Houston, and it doesn't matter what we do at FAU, we'll have around 15k for the Tuesday night game.

  28. Harry, aren't you a kind soul. I was not impressed with the Talons and the cannon Saturday night. They fired it only a few times, and mostly it was not in sync with what was going on. Also, I'm like Lifer.....where are the rest of them? Also(2) what the hell are they doing wearing blue jump suits? Good God, it's a NORTH TEXAS SPIRIT GROUP.....THE NORTH TEXAS SPIRIT GROUP (supposedly) and you have to have a close-up photo to tell who they are by the head bands that they are wearing. I saw another group out there who seemed to be auditioning to be in charge of the cannon. They showed up in noticeable numbers. They were very enthusiastic (they did the push-up thing once). And the unis that they were wearing were closer to the North Texas school colors than what the Talons (the cannon crew anyway) were wearing. I say give them the job.

  29. If you're a kicker at the D1-A level, shouldn't you have much better numbers at the 40-49yrd range. 33% is just too low. He's knocked down all of his 50+ yarders. So what's the excuse?

  30. Those were might thoughts as well....the offense looked like a high school team. With such poor play of special teams and D Thompson...it was a sure loss and I could see that happening in the 1st qtr...thats right...I could see what was happening and knew it would not change. Also, not entertaining in the least. While I support them...I just am not willing to spend 10 hrs on the road, the gas, the hotel, food, etc to drive to Denton and watch them play...it felt good to be back, but the game was a huge let down....If I lived near Denton, I would be back next time....but i don't. It hard to believe they played so bad in Apogee...with everyone supporting them....You could see the problem with the offense in the TSU game...they should have had another 14-21 points against them...they didn't.I thought the play calling against KSU was great....I thought the play calling against Troy was bad overall..OK at best....it sure was not on par with the KSU game. The defense looked very good...except there was not much pressure on the QB and they gave up the big plays...anyway if they don't get it together, La Monroe and WKU will make them look bad...basiclly I talking aobut the offense, special teams and secondary. 33. Mac's mentor Hayden Fry went 5-5-1 his first year at NT, then dropped to 2-7-2 the second season. We all know how it turned out after that. He had a similar record at Iowa. Trussbusdad is correct, Mac is building that foundation. We're not even halfway through the season yet, no sense giving up yet!

  34. As inconsistent as DT has been, this thing comes completely apart if he is not at QB. We have no depth at that position. It has been the biggest recruiting failure the past 2 years. Berglund is a high risk, high reward guy that will at least provide depth and options next year. We desperately need to sign at least 2 QB's this class.

  37. Can't every ST coach in the country use that same arguement? Sorry, but I totally disagree. We have failed at every aspect of ST this year. Kick return for TD, punt return for TD , kicks blocked , missed kicks , onside kicks , penalties , missed tackles , 0 return yards , etc Riddle deserves any & all the critism he gets IMO

  42. I still can't believe the play were NT calls an unnecessary time out in the red zone, then substitute late and get a delay of game penalty and after all that run a play that got nothing. Then have a freshman walk on try a field goal and miss. That is bad coaching and game preparation.

  43. 400+ total yards offense, 3 missed field goals, two times we had to go for it on 4th and long inside of the 30 because of kicking concerns. Dropped balls, overthrown when wide open, drive killing personal foul. Most athletic player in SBC fair catches all punts. Give up 77 yards in 1:13 to end the 2nd half for a TD. Then a bomb on a very well played man coverage pass for another TD. It was a bad game. DT did not play well. But Chico lost the game. Lol

  46. I expect students will still show up for the ESPN game if for no other reason than it's the only game in town that night. No one going home for the weekend or to some other event. however, I agree with PP who said it will be tough to get the alumni side full especially after the horrible game yesterday. We are still making the trek but not nearly as excited about it as we were yesterday before kick-off
