Something new that I've been tasked with in my new role at UNT is to start a Student Alumni Association. My goal is to get as many students involved and excited as a STUDENT so that when they graduate, it's an easy transition to being an involved excited ALUM. Wish me luck in this endeavor as there are so many apathetic hurdles to jump. Had 20 students at the first meeting. Second meeting is this Friday night. Let's hope the numbers continue to grow!!!10 points

This just has to be one of the worst-written, confusing sentences I have ever read on GMG.com.7 points

I like and support Brett Vito. What's the point in nitpicking journalists anyway? The man's doing his job and whatnot. He's not supposed to be a cheerleader. He's just supposed to report the news on UNT sporting events, and write editorial/human interest type stories from time to time as well. He does a good job, calling coaches and players and other newspapers and whatnot. I don't know what the hell else people expect?6 points

TD brought energy to the program. He reached out to the fans (but not as much as Mac) and increased attendance and excitement. Unfortunately, TD was apparently underqualified for the position. Unfortunately for high school FB coaches throughout the USA, colleges will look at the TD experiment and be too afraid to take the risk in the future. The TD era was maddening. His teams had no discipline at all. However, the man gave it his best and I appreciate his effort. Most of us here (not everyone I know) were excited by the hire. We all learned a lesson. The TD era led us to Coach Mac. If not for that, we may be on a different path with less potential. Things happen for a reason.6 points

I'd rather be playing Rice, Tulsa, UTEP, Louisiana Tech, Tulane, Southern Miss, etc. than ULM, Troy, and Middle Tennessee. In the first place, most people are going to give more credit to the former than the later. Second, they are better institutions, reputation wise, in almost every respect. You are judged by the company you keep.6 points

Other than kidnapping Princess Buttercup, I am not really sure what could be going though his dastardly mind.5 points

If Vito has an agenda, it's probably to move up to a bigger, better rag than the Record-Chronicle. Seems he's been stuck at the R-C a long time.5 points

You know, when I saw that in the DRC my first thought was not that the DRC was dismissing UNT, but rather how could we do this same sort of thing for UNT home games? How do we reach out as a city and community to our "out of town" teams to get them to see Denton as a place to come. Then it dawned on me that more OU fans pass through Denton to and from the Texas-OU game than any of our home football opponent crowd numbers...ever! I think Denton has a good idea here for our hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues to market Denton as a spot for OU fans to "stop and stay" during that weekend. Heck, I love to rack in Oklahoma dollars for the Denton city coffers...so, good for Denton in trying this. NOW...Denton...how about a tad more effort in supporting the UNT games? Surely that doesn't take rocket science to try to do...and surly there is a bigger POTENTIAL audience right here in the metroplex for that base than the OU fan base. Why not just a little more effort in that as well? So, for those of us who live here or near here...what are we going to do? Just post some comments on GMG.Com that the same folks will read, but no one will read that matters in this debate???? Or, shall we get in touch with the Denton Visitors and Convention Bureau and professionally and properly ask what they are going to do to promote Denton as a destination spot for the UNT home games? Telling them how much they "suck" in nasty letters and phone calls...well, that will get you what you deserve...NOTHING. But, perhaps a few gentle and professional phone calls and letters telling them their OU fan base idea is a good one, but have they also considered such support for the UNT games might just get them to thinking a bit. Worth a try? What do you think? If it bothers folks enough to post here...shouldn't it be worth the effort to actually do something? Just asking.....what do you say? Should it be a concerted effort with a multiple signature letter...like "we support Denton as a UNT game destination" letter or what......who wants to lead here....5 points

As great as ULM's win over Ark was, I have no desire to ever play them again in any sport...ever.5 points

I've read quite a bit...more than normal even...of Vito antipathy of late. Claims of bias and an agenda on the part of of a supposedly impartial beat writer. Curious...to those making the claim...what is Vito's "agenda"?3 points
-
And their beat writer gets limited access. The paper is openly soliciting the dollars of OU fans yet they publish two crappy Letters to the Editor on September 8th, the date of the TSU home opener, about our program (Mr. Horrell's letter) and about the student fee (Mr. Kempner). I would link the letters but am posting from my phone. Anyway, it pisses me off that this crappy rag of a paper rarely supports North Texas or North Texas athletics. I know people are welcome to post their opinions, but publishing these on the day of the 2012 season opener is B.S. and just another shot at NT. Maybe Denton should get on board and solicit the business of the many alumni and student's parents that come in town for gameday a couple of weekends a year instead of the OU fans that would prefer to stay in Dallas but need another option. When our fans have to post on here to find the best place to stay instead of having the town market to the entity that brings more people to town than anyone else, it is just sad and reinforces how Denton feels about NT athletics. I will step down now.3 points

Speaking of physical abuse, might want to interview LSU's QB. He was really not treated well by the Mean Green.3 points

Gagree, Vito needs a reality check. I am blaming 2007-2009 solely on Brett Vito, and no longer on Todd Dodge.3 points

I know nothing about journalism. But I understand that the writer of the story and the writer of the headline and by-line are usually not the same person. I didn't like the term "pesky" either, but I'm not sure Bret Vito wrote it. Unless and until we start winning, and start having great crowds at Apogee, we may continue to be pesky. Most of us can't contribute on the field, but most of us can buy season tickets and contribute to the Mean Green Club. To do any less just seems pesky. I like the coverage the Record-Chronicle gives us and I like Bret's writing style. And I see the local owners of the D R-C frequently at football and basketball games. Many folk don't realize that you are technically "under arrest" when you are pulled over. You don't have the option to not cooperate. Personally, I think the majority of police forces are doing the right thing. They will always be the "bad guy" in these situations because they've got the badge, gun, baton, and cuffs. But, the reality is, they've got a dangerous job. And, they don't know who hell is good and bad when they walk up on a car. There's really no reason not to cooperate. So, the old lady was out of line here. Just let the officer do his job, go on your way, and let him go on his way.3 points

Honestly, having grown up in Denton and having read the Record Chronicle forever, I don't really think Vito has an agenda, but I think the owners of the DRC are non-supportive of North Texas athletics.3 points

By the TexasFootball.com Staff Texas was very impressive -- at least offensively -- against Ole Miss. Texas A&M clobbered SMU. Texas Tech hammered another lowly opponent. Baylor played with its food before hitting the gas against Sam Houston State. TCU made its Big XII debut with a sloppy win over the worst team in the conference. North Texas lost, but impressed with their effort against Kansas State. So, what does it all mean for our Power Poll, ranking the 12 FBS teams in Texas? Let's take a look. #6 North Texas - Another respectable road loss for the Mean Green. This team WILL be bowl eligible by season's end. http://www.texasfoot...ews/view/1800653 points

word... like how someone makes one analogy and there has to be a thread about how terrible of a reporter he is because of this... you guys take everything way too seriously... if the paper is that bad and he is such a bad reporter, why do you pay this much attention to it?3 points

Believe it or not college ball is largely regional. Other than the fact that my co-workers know I went to UNT, no one in the office can keep all the Texas schools straight. They mix up A&M, UT, & Texas Tech ALL THE TIME. Beating the Longhorns would hardly move the needle here. Us defeatiing USC or UCLA would.3 points

i think it means more than you guys are giving it credit for, considering that what, 5 years ago, WKU was an FCS team...3 points

I get your analogy, so this isn't a shot a you, but calling the DRC a bully makes me giggle. That paper is birdcage carpeting. What they say, or don't say, about us will never sway public opinion one way or the other. Denton is a Johnny come lately town and WILL jump onboard when the road is smooth...then promptly jump off when it's not. The newspaper used to house train their puppies won't affect that.3 points

You think the Austin paper, Bryan/College Station paper or the OKC paper writes about their home teams in an objective manner? Heck no! I think, even though a newspaper is going the way of the dodo bird, that having a cheerleader as a sportswriter may ever-so-slightly help the community appreciate the Mean Green more and possibly come to the games. The power of persuasion! I don't think that's going to happen though, and I don't think that is in Vito's job description.3 points

24,500+ I know a few people at work that are coming up for this game, because they saw the K-State game and want to see this team in person. People are getting excited about the Mean Green.3 points

Two years. Let me repeat that...Two Years!! Two years from now, things are going to be a lot different around here. We're gonna' look around and wonder how far we've come in such little time. It's gonna' make the wasted time of the Dodge era seem even more disgraceful. But all of that is going to be in our rear-view mirror. This football team is headed in the right direction and with a lot of force. There's gonna' be some setbacks. We're going to lose some games we should have won and this board will blow up for a bit. We may get some injuries that knock us off track for a bit. But when we look around in about TWO YEARS, things are gonna' be looking pretty good. For now, enjoy the minimal traffic problems. Enjoy having plenty of leg room to spread out. Enjoy the short lines at concessions and restrooms. Take in the last few moments of listening to your co-workers be dismissive or "meh" at your MEAN GREEN, because things are about to change. As this forum's title says..."Coach Mac is our leader and will take us to the promised land". We are starting to see the signs of this and in about two more years, it'll really begin to shine BRIGHT GREEN! Mark it!! This post has been promoted to an article3 points

I have been working on my penetrating analysis of Daniel Sams' Heisman candidacy... 1st and 10 at UNT 35 Daniel Sams rush for 3 yards to the NoTex 32. 3rd and 1 at UNT 42 Daniel Sams rush for 7 yards to the NoTex 35 for a 1ST down. 2nd and 6 at UNT 47 Daniel Sams rush for 5 yards to the NoTex 42. 1st and 10 at KSU 49 Daniel Sams rush for 4 yards to the NoTex 47. 21 35 I thought he briliantly ran out the clock with 2 minutes to go with his team ahead 35-21... 4 rushes 19 yards I think Geno Smith and some others are slightly ahead of him, but I think Sams put himself in the conversation with this tantalizing effort...3 points

I agree with your major points, but I'd have to say that we have few fair weather fans given that we have only won 5 games in the past how many years, and still have 18,000 to 25,000 people show for a home game. That is basically the size of our base, hardcore fans. To have fair weather fans, you have to actually win. If you throw the tailgaters into that number, than it goes up considerably. I think what we need now are ways to convince the taligaters to come into the game plus bring in new fans from the student body and community.3 points

Doesn't seem that hard to comprehend does it... Vito is either too negative, too much of a kiss ass, doesn't try hard enough, doesn't care about the program, or doesn't know what he's talking about. Again... With this fan base he just can't win.2 points
