  1. If DT 90's 70 year old grandmother with a hip replacement can walk from Fouts parking lot for EVERY home game last season, there is absolutely no excuse for others not to make the same walk. No excuses. Get your rears to the games.

  3. AD= Athletic Department for the purpose of this post As one who is willing to call our AD to task for their shortcomings I thought I would dedicate a thread to throwing out an "atta boy" when it is warranted. I received my season tickets in the mail today. On the bottom of each page of tickets is a coupon for a buy one get one free offer. The tickets are general admission tickets, so we're not giving away the farm here, but it's a nice enticement to get a season ticket holder to drag a couple friends along. Or, at the very least, if you're like me and occasionally treat a couple friends to a game in hopes that they'll become paying customers, it lessens the financial load a bit. Again, it's not a widespread ticket giveaway to elementary school kids like some on here want, but it is definitely an effort to boost attendance. Who knows, perhaps these same coupons ARE being distributed in other ways to other groups....this certainly gives me hope that it is so. Also, my parking passes are red this season. They were blue last season. As one who doesn't like it when you move my cheese (corporate people will get that one) I was a bit upset at first. I called the AD ticket office, though, and spoke with Elizabeth and was put at ease. Seems red/blue are interchangeable in that lot and really mean nothing other than encouraging people to take different traffic routes to the same spot. She also politely allowed me to purchase a second parking pass ($100 for those interested). I was so impressed with her that I went ahead and put down my deposit on two season tickets for men's basketball ($25 per seat), She didn't sound like a student or intern so I'm hoping she is permanent in that ticket office. Ok, KRAM, here's your chance to co-sign and tell everyone why our AD is the super bestest on the planet. This post has been promoted to an article

  7. Pretty much exclusively Denton since I moved up here a few months ago. Lou's and Oak St. Drafthouse FTW! Right now I'm technically pre-RTVF, but will likely switch to business soon. Seems kinda silly to do RTVF when I so thoroughly dominated radio for a decade. Wink.

  9. DENTON, Texas --The University of North Texas basketball teams will have a new training facility and additional scholarship support soon, thanks to more than $2.5 million that the athletics department has raised in 30 days for the program. “After a few short weeks of launching a capital campaign project to enhance our basketball facilities, I am happy to announce that we have accomplished our mission and will exceed our goal,” Director of Athletics Rick Villarreal said. “Thanks to the support of some of our loyal donors who have committed to fund important improvements for our program, our basketball teams will have a strong foundation for success. The University also made significant strategic investments this offseason with the hiring of coaches Tony Benford and Mike Petersen. All of these efforts will help elevate our basketball programs to new heights.” FULL ARTICLE http://www.meangreensports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=205648215&DB_OEM_ID=1800

  10. I don't disagree with anyone who feels that this should not have happened. I also agree that the coaching staff should have done everything possible to make room for kids; taking their talents to south beach or to the Denia neighborhood of Denton County. Benford nor RV should be blamed for this as it is a reality of competing in a very competitive big business. Trey was recruited to South Dakota out of S. Grand Prairie High. In hindsight, he may have signed there originally for greater playing time. Sometimes circumstances helps make the right decision for us. http://rivals.yahoo....y-Norris-107260 I actually attribute some of the blame on the kid themselves. Equally, their parents, high school and AAU coaches and so called friends for the environment today where kids oversign annually. Not much thought, at times, goes in to what is the best fit but rather feeding the ego and signing with the highest profile school available. Last time I checked, there were over 700 + basketball transfers in D1 hoops. (Avg of almost 2 per team) Parents and kids need to understand that coaches are in the sales business during the recruiting process. They tell recruits and family what they want to hear. AAU & HS coaches can boast that they got their kid a top level scholarship, in hopes of landing other star athletes to their school/program. Trey was recruited to UNT as a reserve on a moderately successful Sunbelt team. The stakes are higher. A question I would have asked during the recruiting process is whether or not you (coach) will be around for 4 years? If you leave, can I get some assurances that my scholarship will be protected; provided that I uphold my end of the bargain. (watch heads drop) Tony Benford was a highly successful assistant coach/recruiter at a top 10 program. Did he make Marquette successful or was his success a result of Marquette basketball? We're taking a chance on a brand new coach with a 5 year guaranteed contract at a record level. The pressure is turned up for the new coach and the guy who hired him (RV) to elevate an already rising program. Keep in mind that we just fired the women's coach and had her replacement walk on us to a perceived better program after one year. The AD has to provide his new hire with the best opportunity to succeed. TJ Taylor, the 7th ranked senior in Texas in the class of 2010, was attracted to Marquette because of Tony Benford. If the coach felt that Taylor could help a top 10 program, why wouldn't he make room at UNT? I was able to attend a few of Trey's HS games once he commited to UNT. I've spoke with his mom in the stands at SGP and UNT games. Spoke briefly with Trey once at the IAD in Carrollton. I found him to be a very likeable and polite kid. (Away from twitter) I certainly understand the sentiment expressed here and concur with that the timing may not have been the best. I do think that things have worked out. The TJ signing was the exception and not the rule. We live vicariously through our sports teams and athletes as our sense of recreation, entertainment and enjoyment. Fielding a successful CUSA program is big business for both Benford and RV. I would give them the benefit of the doubt on this one.

  11. Interesting. Didn't realize SMU kids wear giveaway t-shirts, basketball shorts, and flip flops. The ones I always deal with wear Croakies, pastel-colored shirts, and boat shoes. But I can't really argue with the "loud drinker" part. Also- Didn't go to freshman orientation, but was at the transfer orientation in June. Go Mean Green!

  18. And you have no idea what happened, how it was handled, or whether or not it was Benford that found a spot for Trey at USD. I guess we could go back to 5-25 records, right? As for the bold: Much like Odoh did to UNT this last class. Things happen.

  19. Trey was lucky to find anywhere in August. A much of bs excuses for doing the wrong thing. You have no idea were Trey would have sit the rest of his career and if you think forcing a player out that had his ship renewed and was a part of the team and still would be if Taylor didn't suddenly appear is ok than I wonder about your priorities. Whether Norris can play or not has nothing to do with with the ethics involved. Benford did what most coaches would have done in the same circumstances, but that doesn't make it right. NT make an commitment and decided to renege on it. You can wrap that in a myriad of lame excuses but that is what happened.

  21. The sucky thing about a sucky conference is you have to play your conference mates. Ergo our remaining home schedule sucks. If we were in the conference that TCU was in at the time we too would have played: BYU UTAH Wyoming New Mexico Air Force Sand Diego State Colorado State UNLV Good news is, next season we will have more home games people can get excited about and Im confident our OOC scheduling will pick up as well. (And who knows - a crappy home schedule this season may create a lot of wins which should generate some excitement.)

  24. Let's be honest, some of the people on this board shouldn't be allowed near the schools. In all seriousness we should focus on what are things we can do as fans to increase attendance. Calls for professors to give extra credit or for the university to spend extra money on promotions are unrealistic. So let's focus on things we can do like.... *I will put this game on my schedule today *I will bring one extra person with me to the game *I will bring an extra 30-pack to the game and beer everyone I see *I will put a link to the football schedule in my email signature *I will invite a stranger to have a burger or hot dog at my tailgate *I will bring a bounce house and some baby oil to my tailgate

  26. My question is, how will gays getting married ACTUALLY have an impact on christians that believe gays should not be married. I don't get this at all. In no way will it impact your belief system (you can still believe it's wrong if that's what you believe), it won't change the way you worship or anything. Your church would not be forced to marry gays if it does not want to. And lets not act like the institution of marriage is so sacred anymore, half the marriages in this country end in divorce.

  34. Well said....this is the correct stance and the correct mindset. It establishes a "pattern of giving" and that's a very very big first step. Anyone who has ever worked major giving campaigns knows that is what you look for...a pattern of giving...and that is what you try to develop early. With early/young givers, the amount is all but immaterial. As said above, it's the pattern of giving one is trying to establish. The recent grad program with the Mean Green Club and the new grad program through the Alumni Association aim to do just that...establish a pattern of giving. Grant.UNT is the prototype young alum that has established a pattern of giving back to his university and I would place a wager on the fact that Grant continues to give, continues to understand why he is giving and increases his level of giving as he becomes able to do so in the future. It will not be the Grant's of the world who withhold support because they develop some personal pettiness or because they think they are losing some level of influence with the university. UNT needs lots and lots of Grant.UNT's, and these younger givers should be respected and thanked. They are the future of UNT.

  35. These are good kids. They're battling for our university. They deserve our support. Let's give that support in every way we can - attendance at the games & money (if you can afford it). And let's be careful what we say on this forum when things don't go quite right. They may lose but it won't be for lack of heart. God bless North Texas!

Hmmm...are you a documented 20 year old genius with clairvoyant tendencies, or do you have some kind of a vested interest in this issue? Personally, I'm not really into this gay vs. heterosexual game, but you just seem to have a way of dragging people into the fray. Oh well, to each his own. I'm kind of more into things like MEAN GREEN SPORTS. Especially this time of year.

  45. We lost Lance Dunbar to the Dallas Cowboys and have a legitimate chance of going 0-12 this year. KSU should consider this game a "warm-up" game and nothing more. There's no reason why they should look forward to the game against UNT when they have Oklahoma, IN NORMAN, the very next week. It would be best to go ahead and just dedicate 2 weeks to studying and game-planning for OU. You guys were on the cusp last year! Don't let OU hold you down this year. Please pass this credible, insider-information along to the coaches/players.

You know I understand exactly where you're coming from on this, but I'm gonna give Benford the benefit of the doubt on number one before I start thinking he does everything direct from the book of Buzz Williams. JJ likely had very similar "you're not in my plans" conversations (Harold Edwards, Jonathon Jackson...maybe even Knoxxy) to the one Benford likely had with Norris.
