  1. After all of the growth our beloved school has been seeing, I was thinking how great it would be if UNT built a large Eagle Aviary on Campus. Probably not next to Apogee due to Boomer and fireworks but somwhere near the new union. My family raised and rehabbed exotic birds for the Phoenix Zoo years ago and I've seen some very impressive aviarys. Some even surpassing those found in zoos. What a great tradition this could be.. I love taking my kids to see Mike the Tiger at LSU. Something similar but for Scrappy. Maybe establishing an Eagle rehab facility and program that raises money for exotic bird rehab etc. Something to think about. JRock

  3. One of the challenges UNT has had in the past was the lack of quality facilities. That notion still exists within the general HS population. It is extremely important to get potential players and their families on the UNT campus so they can see the great facilities UNT now has. These are one evening events...it's not time for "girl watching or chasing"...but they do have some Cheer Squad members and I think dance team members show up...that's plenty good right there, yes? Kids want to play in great facilities in front of great crowds...UNT has the facilities, and is working on the crowds....

Okoroh swatted several shots (I counted 4 in one game) and has good hands

  12. Im a student and live a couple of blocks of campus. I can tell you that last year there was not much if anything around the campus promoting football games or basketball games. I dont have a solution, but thought some info about student knowledge of games would be some help. I think signs and enthusiastic students promoting it could go a long way...as far as student attendence is concerned. There are a lot of music majors with no interest in sports though.

  13. It's great to see the UNT Athletic Department finally doing something to boost opening game attendance..................oh, wait! You're not with the athletic department, are you emmitt01? Sarcasm alert. Seriously, living a gazillion miles from Denton, all I can do is donate. Let me know when that is set up and I'll be glad to help.

  14. It is my understanding that he was simply on campus for 2 weeks and not attending classes. He simply signed with a school and then was released from the letter of intent. The school can do that, and did. He wasn't enrolled, didn't attend classes, and therefore doesn't lose a year.

  15. Would you have rather him had a live segment on ESPN entitled "The Decision"? ha. Like in the car commercial, "Doesn't matter how ya get here, folks. Just get here!" I'm more than excited about this acquisition. I was on the TJ Taylor fanwagon when he left OU. He's here now, and will be for 3 years. This addition has given us a great problem; How will the minutes be distributed. I don't care who gets what minutes, as long as we are going in there night-in and night-out and beating SBC schools by double digits. And with our depth and talent, that's not farfetched at all. I think it really says a lot about our program and how much we've come up. I talked with Dominique Johnson yesterday, and he said we're better this year than VCU. And even though I'm biased, it's hard to disagree. GMG.

  19. So much to elaborate on here. The idea of getting a live mascot back on campus is a neat idea, but considering the expense and responsibility needed, compared to how three non living items have been treated the past 24 years I'm convinced it will never happen. It it were not for a select group of alumni non of those items would probably exist today. We have been in meetings with university officials since last December trying to ratify the problems, so we will see how it goes. There are some good folks working on this. The problem though always stems from the fact that, and our athletics suffer more from this than any other, is that we rarely hire alumni at North Texas and there is constant turn over and those committed to the care and concern of the items one day, are gone the next. We pointed this fact out to them with example after example, as they promised that it's going to be different, this time. So again, we shall see how it goes? As for the model A, the Talons, with minimal effort applied, couldn't get the past 5 years of neglect repaired, so they gave in when an engineering student approached them about letting his department have it for a class project at research park. Then proceeded to destroy a 73 year old American iconic automobile, probably the most simple combustible engines ever designed, and turned it into an electric car. As sad as this may be for those who love classic auto's(Most Americans), and I damn sure wouldnt have gone this route simply due to tradition and range of an electric car, this is the option they chose. I know I've seen golf carts take a lot of abuse when neglected, so we shall see how the A and it's batteries handles neglect down the road. The rest of the funding for getting it repainted and having the interior restored(you could see thru the floor last time I saw it) is being paid for by Dr. Rawlins' office. Dr. Rawlins and his people took the lead on this and I'm hoping will stay on top of it and not allow the car to fall into disrepair again. They are also working obtaining permanent and secure storage for all three items. And there was talk about integrating a display area in the new student union despite the fact that this was promised to have been done at Apogee. That idea at Apogee of course fell through, so I'm not holding my breath on the student union idea, but we shall see? All three items need storage at Apogee or very near by. Anyhow, thats your update on those three items. And if you see Soundman and like the fact that we have one of if not the nations' largest MOTORIZED spirit bell, give him a beer of his choice and a big thank you, as he raised that tradition from the grave by himself last year on his own dime and time, despite the fact that Talons have turned their backs on him on more than one occasion. 20. Do we have ANY open practices? This one is only a 2-hour practice, and I highly doubt they'll be running any plays/formations they don't want Auburn fans to see. If we don't have a single one, then maybe something like this would be beneficial to the Mean Green. Otherwise, it sounds like Alabama's version of the Kickoff Cookout.

  23. OK, let's set the record straight here on the Mean Green Room before basketball games...minimum donation to the Mean Green Club: $500 and it's $10 a person I believe, not $5. Someone out there with a better memory, please do correct me if I am wrong. It was $5 some years ago, but things cost more now...I a good with the cost...it's still a great bargain and a big benefit as far as I am concerned for my Mean green Club donation...besides, my bride and I can drink enough beer and eat enough good food to make it a great deal for us! Dinner, Beer and a game...DATE NIGHT!

  25. It'd be great if UNT at least formed a relationship with one of the area zoos and their eagles. I'd like to see a program where students would study the birds and help care for them. It'd be cool to then see some sort of signage at the zoo by the eagle aviary that called this out.

You have to be a member to park over here with us. Friend: How much does it cost? Harry: About $41.50 a game when we have 6 home games, and you get admittance to the mean green room before basketball games for that also. Give them $5 and you get a meal and lots of alcohol before the basketball game. Friend: How is the basketball team looking... And y'all can figure out the rest. Good work, Harry.

  43. What makes me want to quit donating? Is threads like this. Who gives a flying f-ck. This program needs money and more fans. Neither of which hinge on whether fans can attend practice. I read threads like this and think to myself maybe it is time to quit throwing good money after bad. We will always be small time. Unfortunately for me I have some sort of addiction to the hope of better days for the Mean Green. So I keep sending out the checks. On a side note. My wife and her entire family attended Ohio State. My father in law and I give about the same amount of money to our respective universities. He gets a bumper sticker and the right to buy 4 nose bleed seats on the 50 yard line. That's it! What have I recieved? Well I get the right and do buy four club level seats that cost less than his nosebleed seats at the horseshoe. I have attended multiple events in Houston for donors and prospective donors. I have had dinner with the university president. I have had drinks with representatives from the athletic department in Houston. Not to mention the usual gifts from umbrellas to grill sets and so on. As I said before. I don't donate that much! Especially when compared with major universities. Yet here we are discussing the 5 fans that want to see a practice and at what giving level that should be. Instead let's discuss how being a Mean Green fan and donor is the best deal in college sports and according to the attendance and donor levels no one seems to give a crap. I could care less about open or closed practices. What I do care about is that at some point we either hit critical mass or people get tired of trying. Ok that turned into a rant, sorry. Dear God please let this be a winning season This post has been promoted to an article

  44. People who think this way will never join. You join the Mean Green Club to support Mean Green athletics. Anything you get as a benefit is just that, an added benefit. Do you want to be a major athletic program or not? Major donors at major athletic programs get benefits minor donors don't. That is the way major athletic programs work. Or, we could keep doing things the way we have for the past 20 years. That seems to have worked out well...

  45. Oh I know, I was there last year for the Houston game. It's brutal. But they always can find a way to make it easier on the athletes in those situations, like starting the game later, having huge fans blowing tons of cool mist on the sidelines, etc. If they can mimic those conditions in practice that's fine, but I don't think there's anyway to make a 2 PM August practice in a place like Denton safe without going to ridiculous lengths to make it so. At that point, have 5 AM practices, or 11 PM practices, or something.

  46. Very good article. Mr. "Ima Moron" really has no idea how difficult football practice actually is, nor how dangerous it is in the heat. I remember before my sophomore year, we hired some random strength coach to train anyone on the team that wanted to take part (it was RI high school, hence why it wasn't mandatory...not taken as seriously as football is here in TX haha). The dude was legit, had played D1 in college, and had been a personal trainer for quite some time. Even in 85 degree (but very humid) heat, the sessions were brutal. I got so dehydrated at one point that the colors of the grass and the sky were switched by my brain for a few seconds, and this was only 85 degrees without pads. Anyone that thinks it's safe for anyone of any physical condition at any age, let alone college, high school, and especially even younger levels, to be doing 2-a-days in 100+ degree heat in full equipment is out of their mind. When it comes to minors especially, any coach that tries to do that should be fired and imprisoned for some kind of torture charge, endangering of a minor charge, or whatever. And, god forbid someone dies, they should be charged with manslaughter. While I think the driving 100 mph comparison in the article is a bit unfair, it's still incredibly unsafe for a human being to be consistently pushed beyond their physical limitations for hours on end in extreme heat. How many kids need to die before people get a clue?
