i hadn't been over here in awhile and just wondered what your boy has been up to. looks like the mean green are having a good offseason. just read up on the new guy coming from marquette. nice. not nice for the rest of us though. our offseason couldn't be better. simply because ken mcdummy is nowhere to be found. norman dale (ray harper) has been working on keeping jimmy chitwood's elbow warmed up. i'm sure before we play ya'll this year that he'll pull out a tape measure and assure the toppers that the rims are 10' high and the free throw line is 15' from the rim. he'll have no business keeping the toppers close in a game with the mean green but i'm sure he'll give it his best shot. full disclosure: my nickname for my pee wee baseball team was 'shooter' p.s. as assistant head coach i helped our pee wee team to the county championship this year. had over 1200 views on ihigh the night of the game. i'm worldwide. p.p.s. i'll miss the mean green in hoops.5 points

Hey everybody, let me introduce myself as I am new to gomeangreen.com. My name is Chris, I'm going to be starting my sophomore year at UNT this fall. I am originally from Rhode Island, and a relocated family member allowed me the opportunity to open a new chapter in my life in our fine state of Texas. I am a Geography major, and, as you can guess from my presence on this site, an avid UNT sports fan. I may be new to Mean Green Nation, but that doesn't mean I'm not every bit as passionate a fan as the rest of you, young and old a like. I was there for the opening of Apogee, I was there in Hot Springs this year, and I'll make damn sure I am front row at the 50 in the student section for all the football games for the rest of my time as a student here, and I'll attending every home basketball game and traveling with my fellow students up to Hot Springs this year and El Paso (providing there is a student bus, which is iffy given the distance) the following year for our conference tournaments. I'm currently parading myself around Rhode Island this summer sporting my Mean Green gear proudly, as I see others wearing bandwagon clothing (UCONN, Boston College, even occasionally Texas...). Anyways, enough mindless ego stroking, I have a point to make. While I am very new to gomeangreen.com, I have spent the last couple weeks reading through this site's forums as a guest, and I've noticed an interesting trend. No matter what the original topic, a large amount of the threads result in stupid bickering; people here seem to hold grudges against each other and it results in unnecessary arguments. I may be new to being a part of this wonderful school and fan base, and may not know the history of our sports teams like a lot of you do, but there is one thing I absolutely know. This is a special, special time to be a part of this university, both athletically and academically. I want everyone I know to be a part of this great time. I am incredibly excited for the upcoming football and basketball seasons, I truly feel that both are going to be incredible this year. But, as a fan base, instead of bickering over pointless things, why can't we join together, and be one? Of course, people have differing opinions over things, and this is the internet, so having arguments or disputes over things are inevitable, but there is a difference between having a constructive disagreement with a fellow fan and having a stupid, petty argument that gets nobody anywhere. Just to clarify, it isn't just this website that I see this trend on. On facebook, there is a page called "Fill Apogee"; the point of the group is to try to get the word out to as many people as humanly possible to try to sell out the home opener. The link of the group will be listed below, for those who are interested in joining. But, even on that group, which is filled with mostly students, petty arguments broke out over whether Texas Southern was a weak team to have for our home opener (not necessarily referring to the team's talent level, but more of weak on our end that that is the best we can schedule), and whether or not FCS is considered D1 or not. This is not only stupid, and irrelevant, but it's also counterproductive. Even if that logic applied (which obviously it doesn't, as anyone who follows college football will understand), the point isn't who we are playing, it is that we are playing. We should go out and support our team 100%, no matter the opponent, and pointless bickering over stupid stuff isn't going to accomplish that goal. Anyways, what ended up happening was a couple players stepped in and commented, Mason Y'Barbo, and none other than Derek Thompson. And I will post what they said. Y'Barbo: All I ask is yalls support. This is going to be a monumental season for us and i want you all to experience it with us. No need for the back and forth name calling and arguing ( though it is amusing). Just please be behind us 100% as one. Thompson: Yall dont really understand how much we feed off of our fans when we step on the field at Apogee. We need this place rockin every time we hit the field! I promise we will put a team out there that will do special things this year. All we ask is that when a home game comes around, that teams never forget the atmosphere at Apogee. Its such a psychological advantage! Hope to see everyone out there this year. Go Mean Green! After these guys commented, the bickering stopped, which is not surprising. And they're right. This is a special team, and it's going to be a special year. If we all put ourselves 100% behind these guys, and believe in them even when times are tough, I really think we can make a bowl game this year. We're going to shock some people in conference play, much like WKU did last year. Same thing with the basketball team, it's really going to be a special year. Especially now with TJ Taylor apparently added, this is really a team that can be top 25, or higher. Who knows, maybe this can be our Butler year? Anything is possible. We have a star. We have a returning supporting cast. We have a new very talented addition. And most of all, they believe they can do it. Just look at the twitter feed from these guys, they believe that they can be the best. Chris Jones seems to think he'll be in the NBA Draft next year. While that is probably silly and not going to happen, these guys have confidence coming into this year. And they have us to back them. So, this is my plea. My plea to North Texas fans everywhere, but starting with you guys. We are one, we stand for the same thing, root for the same team. We are on the same team. Let's fill Apogee. Let's get to a bowl game. Hell, let's win the damn conference, in both sports. Let's make a run in the NCAA Tournament. Let's help Tony win National Player of the Year, and be drafted Top 5. Let's do this, together. We are North Texas, Go Mean Green.4 points

Thanks for your hard work! I am sure the businesses in Denton were glad to have a football poster instead of the latest vegan coop market poster, or some sort of weird Indy band playing at Dan's. *No offense meant to a certain coop person here, just directed at weird Denton.4 points

The stores within Golden Triangle all pretty much had their corporate hands tied, wouldn't allow any to be put up. I get that about clothing retail, obstructing merchandise... However, theres now a poster hung inside the window of the main entry of the mall itself. (permission not granted..) Take that Golden Triangle! Got others hung at a couple of jiffy lube places, Diesel Fitness, few other mom n pop places close to the mall. I still have about 5 or 6 left, but I have to go to Denton next weekend, so I'm gonna look for some more places.4 points

went up and acquired some posters at the stadium t-shirt shop and looked at the new pedestrian bridge. I'll be distributing some posters in the Saginaw area. I have a standing invitation from a donut shop in south Saginaw (the owner is a TCU grad) and I'll hit a couple of sports bars in the area. The donut shop gets a LOT of business from the new families that have moved into the new home construction in that area. AND they get more than their share of the Police businessl........4 points

I had a great time hanging posters with UNT90 around Denton today. We got around 34 posters in businesses around the Best Buy, Walmart, Kroger, and Target shopping centers. I hope all the other people had similar success. Thanks KRAM1 for organizing this event.4 points

Most students are going walk to the stadium. If you park at Fouts or any UNT parking lot it makes for a much easier walk. Also, it just looks cool. I like the wing shaped roof as it goes well with the wingzone seats.4 points

Future generations will view the gay marriage issue like we view things like child labor and women's suffrage movement. The obvious eventual outcome on this issue will be that gay marriage will be viewed as a fundamental right - which it is. In the meantime we will waste valuable time, money, and resources on this idiotic debate. Thank you founders for doing your best to keep church and state seperate.3 points

For those wondering. Side Show Joe and I ran out of posters to give. We got great cooperation from Jersey Mikes (poster hung inside and on the entry door), Buffalo Wild Wings (took 4 posters to hang throughout the restaurant), Wataburger, Popeyes (off the loop and I35E) and the pizza place attached to it, Car Toys, Walgreens, and a bunch of other places I can't remember (little help, Side Show?) Most of the corporate stores took posters with the promise to ask for permission to hang them up. Some took smaller posters to hang in their break rooms when their company policy wouldn't allow them to hang them in the store. We were generally met with enthusiasm, even from the folks who couldn't allow the posters to go up. This is something that we could do every year. Hell, we could all meet before a football tailgate and do it with basketball season posters. The feedback was over 90 percent positive. It's there, folks, we just have to go get it.3 points

Not really. There is a reason that gays may seem intolerant towards those that want to take away their rights. You know, because they are gay, and they deserve the same rights as everyone else. Look back in history, to when blacks were going through this same issue. People were trying to outlaw interracial marriage, and make it so blacks cannot vote. Blacks fought this, and were intolerant towards people that disagreed with them. I think you'll agree that they had good reason. Anyone that doesn't support rights for all is intolerant, not the other way around. I support everyone's right to an opinion and belief, but no one has the right to legislate their belief, especially when it takes away other's rights. Like I said, if you don't think it's okay for gays to get married, then don't partake in gay marriage. It isn't your decision how other's live their lives. That doesn't make any sense. It isn't ANYONE'S job, including the states. If gays don't have the right, due to the state they live in, then they need to fight for the right. It wasn't the states right to play moral cop back when racism was the issue either. There is a reason the federal government made it impossible for the states to play moral cop when it comes to outlawing interracial marriage and preventing blacks from voting. The same logic applies here. There is no reason other than religion that someone would want to outlaw gay marriage. Due to that, it cannot be outlawed, because religion cannot be legislated. I don't trust the school to build parking garages after the last one they built. That thing sits there everyday at least 1/2 to 3/4s empty because the school refuses to make it affordable for students.3 points

some of you may be familiar with Michael Gruber aka "Grubes" - former ticket personality who now attends unt. grubes is well known for live tweeting during ranger games. recently, someone on twitter said he should live tweet from UNT basketball next season and grubes replied and said that he would. something to keep an eye out for next season. @tweetgrubes (19,200 followers)2 points

I'm disappointed in myself because I didn't make it to the pavilion last year. It is for Alumni Association members and guests. The sell food and beverages (including beer) before the football games and shut down during the games (to encourage folks to go into the games). There are also TVs and giant fans. Personalized pavers surround the building. Someone correct me if I was off on any of the facts.2 points

Alright, you talked me into it. I should have a few years of eligibilty left. I am 43, 5'8" and 170 lbs that runs a 5.8 20 yard dash. Tell me that wouldn't make a hell of a national story and bring tons of press to NT. Plus, the cheerleaders will dig me.2 points

AND as I've pointed out before, it will give the Alumni Pavilion a LOT more foot traffic, since it connects to the Apogee side right behind the pavilion.2 points

The perfect scenario (IMO) would be to shuck a multi-level eye-sore of a parking garage near or where Fouts is and rather build the Hotel and Conference Center in that same area. This would allow UNT to keep more green space near Apogee Stadium (and the tailgate areas) which could start looking a bit too " way too many buildings in one area busy" if they end up putting the H & CC near Apogee inside the MG Village. Of course, I'm sure they've already thought all this out thoroughly, right? GMG!2 points

Going through all the comments that were posted after mine, I guess none of you have any real sense. It's so simple that it's ridiculous. It's a controversy because CFA donates millions to organizations that try to legislate Christianity, namely making gay marriage illegal. What he said brought that to light. Whatever your opinion or beliefs, fine. But, not everyone will share that view. Telling people to screw or F off isn't going to make your point any clearer. Besides, I think the gay marriage issue has a very simple solution. It needs to be legal, precisely for the reason that we all have the right to freely believe and practice any religion we want. And because of that, we cannot legislate religion, or prevent change due to religion. In some religions, it may be okay for gays to get married, and people without a religion could give a damn who marries who. Therefore, to protect all involved, anyone should be able to marry anyone if they choose to do so, the only restrictions should be against incest because that's just unsafe for reproductive purposes, and if a brother and sister, or different gender cousins cannot get married because of that, then we need to have that restriction for gays as well. If you don't believe in gay marriage, fine. There's a simple solution to that. If you're a guy, don't marry a guy. If you're a woman, don't marry a woman. Problem solved. It isn't your job to play moral police with our laws and rights.2 points
-
This is all absolute bullsh!t. Boycotting a company because the owner doesn't believes that marriage is between a man and a woman and doesn't believe in same sex marriage? Really??? These people are trying to take down a company because of what they believe in??? My family owned a business and we are Catholics who believe marriage is between a man and a woman. And never once did we discriminate against any employee that had different societal views than we did. That's what I believe. If you don't like it, screw you and f__k off if you don't like it. Go eat a McDonalds "MacChicken", or whatever it's called!2 points

If gay people wanna marry, I got no problem with it. If Chic Fil A wants to oppose that, I'm fine with that, too. They lose enough of my business on Sundays, which is theoretically the best day for Chic Fil A, btw. Fact of the matter is that I have no idea what the money I spend at the grocery store, auto dealership, gas station, or electronics store goes to. I know it purchases me a product I want at a price I'm agreeable to. That's the business of the place. Just like I could give a crap about some idiot celebrities politics as long as they entertain me. Just. Don't. Care. But hey, it's cool if these other people do. Support them. Don't. Buy more. Buy less. Actually, I guess I prefer people buy less, because no matter what location you're at, Chic Fil A drive-thru lines are OBSCENELY long. I bet it's because people can't get it on the best day - Sunday.2 points

Folks, as of this pint we have five (5) volunteers...those would be: KRAM1 - yes, I do count myself UNT90 LongJim Slide Show Joe Emmitt01 I am finding a "meet up" place where I will provide a snack and coffee/juice to all volunteers...I'll also provide tape and thumb tacks for the volunteers and we'll assign areas to work. I'll have out the posters and off we will go. MAKE CERTAIN you wear Mean green Gear of some kind so folks will be able to spot you and know you are a member of the great Mean Green Nation. Once we all head out, we will be on our own...work as long or as short a time as you wish and just get back with me when you can on how it went so I can report our success and any "unique" experiences here on GMG.Com. Thanks to the folks who have volunteered so far...we sure could use some more voluteers...if you just want to meet up to pick up some posters for distribution later or in other cities, just let me know you are coming and what area you want to cover. Come on folks...this really can and will be a fun experience...and it's a very positive way to help UNT that will only cost a little time and gasoline...so, some of you good folks who are unable for whatever reason to join the Mean green Club or to make financial contributions could volunteer your time instead...it's all good. PM me or post here if you can join us on SATURDAY, JULY 28th. Meet up time will be 9AM...location to be announced! If you own or work for a local business that would be willing to put up a poster, just let me know and we'll make sure you get one....2 points

NEWFLASH II: Chik-Fil-A guy isn't playing moral cop, he's just stating his personal belief. He's just as welcome to give his opinion about marriage as gay people are to give theirs. Finally, if it isn't anyone's job to play moral cop with rights and laws, then gays and lesbians shouldn't be pushing for legalized marriage in states that have decided to outlaw it, or which have laws stating a marriage is between a man and a woman. See? Those states have already decided they don't want it. So, gays ad lesbians should leave those states' "right and laws" alone. Easy.1 point

Kind and gentle isn't necessarily what I'm pulling for, just an end to unnecessary stupidity and bickering. I can tell from contextual clues on the older posts when things are done in a joking manner, but it seemed that there are many examples of threads going to shit because of unnecessary, and often irrelevant, bickering. And it can be entertaining, but it also can be counterproductive. A disagreement where people present points and aren't arguing for the sake of arguing is a wonderful thing.1 point

No team SHOULD go to a bowl game with less than 7 wins... It really bugs me to see teams go to bowls with a 6-6 record, lose and then be a "bowl team" with a losing record... "But, hey, we went to a bowl game!!" 7 should be the bare minimum... If there are too many bowl games for that, then get rid of some...1 point

Todd, I get that 100%. It just is like clockwork around here that someone...who is not a volunteer...comes up with some criticism of something. We can definitely come up with an "official name' for the event...BUT, it will come from the actual volunteers themselevs...you know, the ones who have actually given of their time, talent and dollars to help with the event. So, be thinking of what we might could call this little event going forward...1 point

This is great you are doing this....wish I was in town to help. FYI....Specs off 75 has some Texas State koozies at the registers....those need to be replaced with some UNT. Also, the Humperdinks off Greenville has every local college flag except UNT. It's right in SMU's backyard. On another note, when I wear my Conference USA NT shirt, I get several people asking me where I got it.
