I was able to attend the UNT team camp yesterday as I coached a HS team during the event. I would say that I was impressed with Benford and staff, but that would be an understatement. first of all, I remember benford being in pinkston to recruit tony mitchell. i know he would get out and recruit, and i think that tony's interest in marquette was primarily due to benford. with respect to the camp - benford was constantly engaging with the coaches and asking about them, their teams, offered to share any drills or help he could give them, etc. he very impressive and engaged. the 1 hour practice that the UNT team went through was high paced, purposeful, and engaging. benford was constantly coming over to talk to the HS coaches to explain what they were doing, and he was also very involved in coaching the kids to the point where he was sweating his a$$ off by the end of the practice. he also had tony mitchell speak to the HS kids, and he did that on purpose to force tony to be accountable. he has to live up to the standard he is setting. and then you have a veteran like rob evans out there getting after the kids, and bringing his years of knowledge to the staff. benford did one thing that really impressed me, besides being engaging and extremely knowledgable. he told the coaches that tony averaged 4 turnovers per game, and they were going through drills that would force tony to work on his foot work and be purposeful. the things that keep tony from complete domination are turnovers and fouls. benford has already identified these issues and is addressing them and coaching tony like he needs to be taught. i told tony that he needs to listen to those guys because they know what they are talking about. benford discussed their offensive philosophy, primarily to get a target # of post touches. I think this should be a beneficial strategy for this team with the talent on the roster. with paint touches and good player and ball movement this team should be virtually unstoppable in the sun belt. benford stated that all practices will be open. I think benford was a fantastic hire who can take this program to another level with the move to CUSA.10 points

I think TCU is the only team to beat Stoops in Norman, and they are consistently top 10-ish and in the running with Boise every year for BCS-buster role? Other than that, I'm inclined to agree.2 points

You are getting a real good one in Anthony! He played for me with NM Force for 3 years and he has the tools and ability, if he works hard all of the time, to be a special player for UNT and play beyond College. Coach Benford did an oustanding job building a relationship with Anthony over the last 2-3 years. www.nmforce.com2 points

The announcement that ASU's opener @ Oregon will be broadcast on ESPN was made official yesterday. It brought to mind a question we now face: do we root for our current conference-mates in their OOC games? Prior to the confirmation of the CUSA move, it would've been a no-brainer - hope for ASU to pull the upset of the year and bring credibility to the Sunbelt. Now, though, does that change? Are we more concerned with possible recruiting battles with our temporary conference partners? Thoughts?1 point

I don't know... Kinda hard to beat double digit inflation and 21% interest rates. Still think Carter has him beat. Side note. I wish Carter would just shut it. He has zero credibility to speak on any issue of national importance. Worst President Ever.1 point

I don't remember ever hearing much about DeMarcus Ware in college either. But I do remember that Littlejohn guy from MTSU. I guess some guys are just REALLY late bloomers...1 point

How is it that we had a NFL caliber player on our roster that was not a star for us. Hell until recently I had never heard of him.1 point

I can assure you, Benford didn't go after Anthony because he's a "family friend". Anthony played for me for 3 years with NM Force and after the spring and summer of his Junior year Anthony had 15-20 high major offers. He was ranked #30 in the country by ESPN and #65 by Rivals. He then moved to Houston for his senior year. Unfortunately, things spiraled due to the many distractions and some not so good people around him and in his ear. He's matured a lot and he finally has things back in order in his life. He's an extremely likable kid, he has all the tools to be a great player for UNT. If he works hard he could be special. Coach Benford did recruit him after his Junior year and he was offered by Marquette along with many other high major offers before committing to Memphis (then, de-committing). Coach Benford stuck with him and built a great relationship with Anthony. Anthony knows UNT and Coach Benford is the right fit. www.nmforce.com1 point

Tulane needs to shutup and stay put. My older brother received a great Bourbon Street education at Tulane and I can't wait to attend a game with him in New Orleans. He hasn't been to one in over 50 years!1 point

Constructive isn't the only type of criticism that comes with the territory.1 point

Didn't have a great senior year but does have a ton of talent. Maybe he can regain his form at Midland. Jim Hicks from RCS "Often our players don't bring it every single day, and that is a must if you want to be acknowledged as elite. One bad game against a lesser rated opponent, and some folk have no idea how many emails I will get (either roasting or toasting one of the kids). Maybe Sanders (a 10th grader who led his varsity in scoring and assists) didn't quite live up to his hype at St Thomas HS? The question should be - How many St Thomas HS players did live up to the hype this season? Whew-wee, man don't even get me started... Speaking of players who didn't live up to the hype... let's just put it nicely and state that this wasn't the best weekend for Anthony Norris 6'6 w (Sam Houston HS 2011), whom is rated #65 nationally by Rivals.com. All of us have a bad hair day every so often, but in the case of Norris - hopefully this serves as a warning shot of motivation. If you are ranked among the tops in the nation, committed to a big time D1 program, and (on two separate occassions) don't seize the opportunity to dominate a team of 9th graders, then it concerns me (and it probably concerns the coaching staff at Memphis as well). And this is by no means an attempt to tear down the spirits of Norris, he's a great respectable young man. But when you have a certain number on your back, the constructive criticism comes with the territory"1 point

If we are going to have body bag games can we at least try to have them closer. I believe we should make more of an effort to play teams like TCU, Baylor, A&M, OU, and OSU (I know we play Texas) instead of Florida, Tennessee, Georgia. By doing this we would cut down on cost of travel, increase our fan attendance, and most importantly I can attend these closer games.0 points

Read somewhere that because Dallas can no longer annex land and population (and Fort Worth still can) that Cowtown will also be larger than Big D in due time. Jerry Jones tried to help Big D by returning his team within their city limits with a nice new stadium and other nice investments in the Fair Park area, but former Mayor Laura Miller would have no part of that. He is probably waiting to win re-election first. By the way, although most would consider them conservatives, Regan and George Bush Sr. signed restrictive anti-gun legislation into law while they were in office. So even conservatives make mistakes.-1 points

This is really one for Comedy Central. UNT has not even seen the start of it's affiliation with CUSA and already the Mean Green Nation seems to have found something to complain about...the Basketball Tournament site. Greatness!-1 points

Other than FIU and NT I hope the sun belt gets destroyed in every game they play in every sport this year (except for RPI help in basketball). This is especially true when CUSA schools are playing the Sun Belt. The Sun Belt is not our conference; CUSA is.-1 points
