  4. Camp observations: Dunbar, Beasley catch eye By: Todd Archer ARLINGTON, Texas – The Dallas Cowboys closed the three-day minicamp at Cowboys Stadium and we will close out the observations for the offseason here with some thoughts. Fear not, the observations will be back when training camp begins. Here we go: ** If there was an eye-catching player Thursday it was rookie RB Lance Dunbar. The North Texas product has speed and took the snaps that had been going to Phillip Tanner in the offseason. In one goal line run, Dunbar simply ran away from the defense to the corner of the end zone.

  21. http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/8047787/college-football-facilities-arms-race-proves-recession-proof The construction craze is hardly new in college sports. According to Street & Smith's Business Journal, universities spent a collective $15 billion on sports facilities between 1995 and 2005. It goes back much farther than that, though. Many iconic college football stadiums, particularly in the Midwest, were built shortly after World War I as campus pride reached new heights. What seems to have changed in the last decade or so is how much money has been spent on places fans never see: opulent locker rooms, spacious offices for coaches and state-of-the art practice facilities that are specific to one sport. And despite the late NCAA president Myles Brand's warnings about the destructive nature of the arms race, schools haven't slowed down in erecting fancy new structures.

  23. Sadly guys, if he's not playing in one of the big 6 conferences, then he's "flying under the radar" to a majority of college b-ball watchers. Especially since he only played a handful of games outside of Sun Belt play, and did not make the NCAA tourney. Could probably say the same thing about any "mid-major" player not named Caanan or McDermott.

  27. That Rick doesn't go out and publicly pat himself on the back for everything he's done doesn't mean he's not bringing in the cash. I've mentioned many times that I don't understand his perennial cloak and dagger tactics, but he gets it done. Without Rick, there's no Apogee, no CUSA, no Mac, no Benford, no hope of baseball, and no hope of eventually being a real player in CUSA. The man is tireless and bends over backward for UNT. Some here apparently have some personal issues with him. Doesn't mean he's not doing his job and doing it well. Edit - Incidentally, if anyone wants to approach Rick about some long term, unorthodox giving plans, something tells me he'll take your phone call.

  28. Right. I assume everyone that is "all in" on this fee hike is also donating at least the maximum amount students can pay, each year. Seems to me, if you had as many alums donating as much as the students put in, we'd be in really good shape. Which one do you think has more disposable income?

  31. What an outstanding thread. Great historical perspective of our place in Texas Football. It really does paint a picture of just how destructive we were to ourselves, athletically-speaking. Not getting to play teams in the SWC at home was just a killer to public perception, just as it has been since. Its always been interesting to me how when North Texas has played big game opponents, that our crowds at those places are big. Hearing about 10k going to Austin back in 1976 for a game when a home game in the same season against Texas-Arlington probably didn't draw 10k, just explains even further how much of a mountain we have faced. I think about when we have played at SMU, TCU, Baylor, Texas, Tech, or in NO Bowls and seen the large amounts of green in the stands and immediately think, "For many conference games, there haven't been this many people even around Fouts on gameday, much less in the stands." Back then, though, the state of Texas was so SWC-centric, that those great NTSU teams probably weren't ever going to get their due from anyone (local and state-wide media, local fans, even the students and alumni of the time). Just thinking back to the SWC from 1977-1986, Texas, Arkansas, Houston, SMU, A&M, and Baylor had teams that were top ten caliber teams at different times. Even getting ranked back then for us still got glossed over when there were other Texas teams in the SWC ahead of you, playing against each other. I think it was great that Fry and Nolen tried to get us in their club, but I don't think we ever really had a prayer. The private schools weren't going to take another big public school, especially since UH had recently joined, and there wasn't going to enough support from the other public schools in the SWC to add someone who didn't really expand the market. There was no media attention or pressure, either, along with the fact that we have never had a presence of note in the legislature to help us along. To me, the story of North Texas athletics will still come down to the realization that our leaders allowed us to go down to 1-aa and kept us there for that long.We couldn't get people to show up for games against UTA or West Texas State, why would they show up for a game against even smaller Texas schools from even smaller towns (SFA and SHSU are prime examples here.) Sure, al of those SLC schools had alumni bigger than most of the SWC privates, but there wasn't anything compelling to anyone in the Metroplex to go watch UNT play Southwest Texas State at Fouts, especially when a Top Ten matchup between Texas and SMU was being played down the road. I think had we not dropped down or had we at least bounced back up to i-a quicker, basically following the path of Tulsa or Louisiana Tech, we would have never known the Sun Belt Conference existed, much like everyone else in America. We would have been in the WAC or CUSA during the 80s and 90s. Plus, we wouldn't have allowed ourselves to feel like Fouts was acceptable for our university. And we would have never lost 30 years of fans who could have cared less about SLC, Big West, or SBC schools, especially to watch them in a toilet of a stadium. I love that we finally have gotten in CUSA and we have Texas teams and Tulsa, La Tech, and Tulane in our league now. Its a huge step up for sure. People will go watch UNT play Louisiana Tech at Apogee, when we know that getting them to watch us play Louisiana-Monroe at Fouts was never going to happen at a decent level. People here know Tulsa, even if its a small school, because they are a name that Texas fans know and we know alums of their school. Nobody here knows anything significant about Troy, even if they were decent in football. I think there is still time for our university to make some serious strides in the world of college football that would entrench us as members of the top division of college football for years to come. But we have got to start winning again. Losing seasons are even harder to swallow for UNT in today's college world, as the shift of major division football and smaller divisions is about to get rolling again, probably in small steps. The SBC and WAC are most susceptible to being dropped first. But lower rung CUSA, MWC, and Big East schools will eventually get on that chopping block too. We got to CUSA because of size and market, plain and simple. But to assure ourselves of being included at the top levels of FBS for decades to come, we will have to do some winning at a high level (winning divisions, conferences, and bowl games) to show the rest of the world we belong up there. And it would probably do something way into the future that most of us could only dream about--actually having old SWC public schools show an interest in having us as conference mates one day because our programs are strong, our market stays big, and our academics keep getting better. Right now, and probably 20 years into the future, no Big XII school (Current or past) would be able to tell their fans that they want to have us as conference mates--it would not be received well at all, even if we started winning right now. But if we became a school like Southern Miss or East Carolina, ones that regularly finish ranked and have developed a great reputation as a threat, maybe the folks in Austin and Lubbock and Houston and Norman say to themselves, "Why wouldn't we want a strong public school in DFW with us in our conference that brings more people than TCU or Baylor do to games and we get more viewers than the private schools bring when we play North Texas?" Granted, this is a pipedream, especially in today's college football world and with our pecking order within this region of the US, but it isn't an acid-trip either. If college football becomes semi-pro bal for the Top 40-50 schools in the country, then this all changes and it wouldn't have mattered at all anyway. But until that possible nightmare actually becomes a certain reality, we have our chance. And really, it starts now. Win the podunk SBC and the NO Bowl one last time, go to CUSA with momentum and compete for a division championship and a bowl again, build yourself into a scary OOC opponent for the current Big 5 conferences--this is the Southern Miss, East Carolina, TCU, Utah, South Florida, Central Florida, Boise State, etc..model that has helped them become household names. Realistically, we never had a chance at that before now, but times and attitudes change--it can be done here now and be sustainable. But the key is now--it has to start NOW!!

  32. UNT is not subsiding the convention center. UNT is leasing the land and generating revenue. With the convention the city will have vested interested in the University especially in the area near Apogee. The University will be one the entities that will uses the convention center, why would you not want the convention center on campus? The convention center will allow the University to leverage its facilities and resources. This project will increase the University's visibility. "The xyz convention at the University of North Texas." THIS A BIG WIN FOR THE UNIVERSITY.

  35. "At this level, everyone on the field is so fast," Dunbar said. "You have defensive ends and defensive tackles who can run 4.4s." Yes. This is what Vince Young discovered...and Robert Griffin will soon discover. That's why there are no "running quarterbacks" with Super Bowl rings. Outrunning Iowa State's defensive ends is one thing...have Mario Williams, Demarcus Ware, and the like bearing down on you play after play is a completely different animal. You'd think owners and GMs would have figured that out by now. Most have.

Well...here you go...at least my source...I read extensivly about WWII and have an pretty extensive book collection/library...the attributed quote is as follows: "You cannot invade mainland United States. There would be a rifle behind each blade of grass". My source....The Prange files....late Gordon W. Prange...Chief Historian to Gen Douglas A. McArthur. You will find some "controversy" regarding this quote...folks who don't like US citizens owning guns have written aryticles claiming the quote is false. Interesting as the Prange Files pre-date such "controversy".

  41. The dashboard camera is unblinking. But when gun laws are passed that allow citizens to protect themselves, there is always an outcry from anti-Second Amendment folks that law-abiding citizens will somehow take the law to the extreme and turn society into the Wild West. That's what they argued when Texas allowed conceal carry permits. They said fender benders at 4-way stop signs would escalate into a shootout. They said children would be slaughtered at amusement parks if someone accidentally stepped on someone's foot. They said the streets of Texas would run with blood. None of that happened, quite the contrary. Glen White, former president of the Dallas Police Association said "All the horror stories I thought would come to pass didn't happen. No bogeyman. I think it's worked out well, and that says good things about the citizens who have permits. I'm a convert." It truly underscores the difference between the right and the left... specifically, that people on the left do not trust their fellow citizens to behave in a responsible manner and as such require government supervision and guidance on all things, even if it requires stripping such a fundamental human right as Self-Defense.

Which is exactly what the Second Amendment was intended to protect. 45. SECTION 1. IC 35-41-3-2, AS AMENDED BY P.L.189-2006, SECTION 1 (i) A person is justified in using reasonable force against a public servant if the person reasonably believes the force is necessary to: (1) protect the person or a third person from what the person reasonably believes to be the imminent use of unlawful force; (2) prevent or terminate the public servant's unlawful entry of or attack on the person's dwelling, curtilage, or occupied motor vehicle; or (3) prevent or terminate the public servant's unlawful trespass on or criminal interference with property lawfully in the person's possession, lawfully in possession of a member of the person's immediate family, or belonging to a person whose property the person has authority to protect. (j) Notwithstanding subsection (i), a person is not justified in using force against a public servant if: (1) the person is committing or is escaping after the commission of a crime; (2) the person provokes action by the public servant with intent to cause bodily injury to the public servant; (3) the person has entered into combat with the public servant or is the initial aggressor, unless the person withdraws from the encounter and communicates to the public servant the intent to do so and the public servant nevertheless continues or threatens to continue unlawful action; or (4) the person reasonably believes the public servant is: (A) acting lawfully; or ( engaged in the lawful execution of the public servant's official duties. (k) A person is not justified in using deadly force against a public servant whom the person knows or reasonably should know is a public servant unless: (1) the person reasonably believes that the public servant is: (A) acting unlawfully; or ( not engaged in the execution of the public servant's official duties; and (2) the force is reasonably necessary to prevent serious bodily injury to the person or a third person. As a police officer, it does not bother me. People who are breaking the law are going to try and kill me no matter what. If you take the time to read this, it will say "REASONABLE PERSON". Most reasonable people aren't going to assume that officers walking around are using unlawful force. That is why we wear those uniforms and badges. To Identify ourselves. When we go to a house, we announce ourselves. Bad guys don't need a law to shoot at us, they will do so no matter what. If you look at the reasoning behind the law, there was a hypothetical of an individual raping someone's daughter or wife. Before the law, one could not take action agasint the officer. THAT was the reasoning behind the law. To me, I think it is extreme and overkill, but the law doesn't read any different to me. In Texas, you can use reasonable force to resist unlawful actions. Move along, nothing to see here. Take the anti gun, anti conservative, anti NRA rants somewhere else.
