Is this another token to the Miners for their commitment to CUSA? There were rumblings that they were going to the MWC unless CUSA brought in 2 Texas schools. Voila! UNT & nUTSAx. Now they get this carrot too. Seems like the conference is trying to keep the Miners happy. I like this move. The Miners could turn into quite a rivalry for us... especially in b-ball.4 points

If Denton wasn't already a tourist draw with a huge government presence, then the criticism in the Atlantic might apply. The article is also talking about big conventions, where Denton is making a play for a much different market. Ask yourself if Hurst can support a convention center why can't Denton?4 points

And why the F&%$ should we care about some poster's opinion? Or anyone else's opinion that isn't a CUSA official or university official? Seriously.3 points

The UNT Alumni assoc. just this year hosted a national conference of Alumni Associations at UNT and had a great turnout. The gateway center is way too small and has far inadequate space to host any event of any real size. Its' great for certain things and was built not as a convenetion center, but to handle much smaller events. It is even getting to be too small to host the Alumni Association's twice annual Ring Ceremony for graduating seniors. There is really no place in denton to house any conference of any size and that is the reason Denton does not compete with some of the cities mentioned in this thread. There is no one hotel large enough to house any group of any real size...thus, while Denton has seen a nice increase in hotel/motel rooms in the last few years, no one of the properties is actually large enough. So, if you want to bring mid-sized (and even smaller conferences) to Denton and if you want a place in Denton to be able to hold larger events such as Chamber of Commerce events within the city of Denton itself, the this conference center and hotel is a pretty important development. There will be the usual number of naysayers who want Denton to stay the sleepy little college town that they see it as (and, of course, which it has not been for over 20 years now), the same number of "not in my backyard folks, the same number of of just plain negative on everything folks that always come out of the woodwork in cases where Denton and/or UNT is doing some development, but the bottom line here is that this is a needed addition for Denton. The positives far outweigh any negatives that these folks can drum up...in my opinion, of course. Let the dirt start turning and flying on this project ASAP. The sooner the better for me.3 points

I just got home from the East Texas UNT football camp at Chapel Hill. There was one QB that stood out above the rest - about 6'1" - 6'3" or so; hard to tell from the stands. Not stocky but had meat on his bones and a helluva arm. His passes were accurate; could go deep with ease; and the ball has some mustard on it, especially on the out patterns - he was clearly the best out there, and Canales was very interested in him. He hung on to him after the camp was over and spent quite a bit of time talking to him; and then making sure that McCarney met him and offered encouraging words. I think this guy "went on their list" along with the many other QBs they have pegged on their list from around the state. As for the rest of the crowd of players (50 - 52 in my last count) the coaches were interested in the Tyler Lee kicker/punter - plays on the soccer team (according to t-shirt) and punts and kicks. He was kicking field goals from 55 yards out with plenty of room to spare - high elevation by what would have been the line of scrimmage (hard to block, and God knows UNT has had its share of problems with blocked punts over the past 5 – 6 years); his punts were high with good hang time (4 - 5 seconds my guess) - averaged punts of about 45 yards. There were a few receivers and DB's with OUTSTANDING speed – in fact blow-away speed and quickness. A couple of the DB’s had great coverage in seven-on-seven, and three or four receivers combined speed/quickness with very good ball-catching ability. Given what little I profess to know, I would have on the spot offered 3 - 4 of the guys attending the camp - don't know, of course, what McCarney will do. McCarney is a master in so many areas. He was greeting not only the high school coaches in attendance, he was also greeting and hugging the “water crew” while remembering their efforts from last year; he also remembered the CH trainer from last year’s camp at CH and spent time visiting with her. After play was over McCarney gathered the participants around him and emphasized the players being coachable for their high school coaches; he emphasized character; he told them that he had enough problems without having problem players……so he would not recruit such players, and that few other university coaches would either. He spelled out in precise terms what he expects from his players – representing their families, high schools, and UNT well in everything they do. He told them that missing class was not an option and he mentioned the high GPAs that some of the current players have earned. One other difference from last year – temp was in the 80s instead of the 100+ of last year. GMG2 points

*Sigh* As I thought was made fairly obvious, GrandGreen's point had nothing to do with overall job assessment or personal like/dislike. The point was We need more money, and we cannot realistically expect RV to raise it alone, or with the staff and resources he presently has.2 points

up to and until the donations by the Vortemans and Charn RV was responsible for some of the largest donations in the history of the entire university....not just the athletics, but the entire university the Wornack Tennis Center, the Goldfields, and Mattress Mac (even though he was a DD friend) the entire university and "system" suffers from a lack of donations and poor fundraising and it starts at the top with the idiot lee jackson that was actually hired because he was a "heavy hitter" and it goes on to his buddy bill lively that ran out on UNT after 9 months when he promised to stay a year to three years the turn over in leadership at UNT does not help that is for sure and I am sure it will continue and the divergent priorities between pulling stuff out of Denton, trying to start things that are not needed in downtown dallas, and having the ghetto campus eat resources sure does not help either RV was around for at least 3 million+ donations to the athletics program and the 20 million deal with Apogee which was about 15 million in cash and 5 million or so in "services" to the university I would find it hard to blame the AD of a university for poor fundraising when he has improved so much since he has been here even before the student fees and when he was around for several donations that were near the previous record for the largest donations in the history of the entire university along with the naming rights deal from some company most people have never heard of and when the entire university and pseudo system sucks at fundraising in a huge way starting with the "heavy hitter" lee the idiot2 points

I pay for plenty. The point is several other new conference mates of ours are already at the $20 limit. We need to get there as quickly as possible. It's a free country. If a prospective student or even a current student doesn't like it, they can go to or transfer to another school. Or, I mean, we could just keep doing things the way we have the past 50 years. I mean, it's worked out so well, right?2 points

What I want is defensive tackles big enough to plug the line while linebackers and monster men make plays in the gaps. Is that too much to ask? It's what they do at OU and other places where their linebackers have ridiclously high numbers of tackles every season - D Line occupies the O Line, linebackers and safety make the plays. Are we talkin' football here or whut?2 points

You're welcome. Anecdotal evidence works both ways. I'm not anti-gun by any stretch, but let's not pretend CHL incidents are only cases of "hero citizens." http://www.khou.com/news/Missouri-City-police-Man-fatally-shoots-neighbor-in-road-rage-incident-91510469.html http://www.chron.com/life/mom-houston/article/Murder-charge-filed-against-driver-in-teen-s-road-1591544.php2 points

This fee should be raised the maximum amount EVERY time it is eligible to be raised. Otherwise, we are just not being serious about our athletic programs. Yes, outside revenue raising also needs increasing, but we should not be ignoring ANY opportunity to raise funding for athletics.2 points

http://essc.unt.edu/...s.html#otherfee tuition rates are already set for fall of 2012 and spring of 2013 if you look at the list of fees you can see that there are a couple of fees listed that start in fall of 2012 or have been increased for fall of 2012 and if you look at the PDF for fall of 2012 spring 2013 tuition it is already set from one to 20 hours for the fall 2012 and spring 2013 with fees included if they were going to increase the athletics fee it would have been done when the other fees were increased or implemented and before the tuition for the two upcoming long semesters was published the reason it was not increased is to keep overall education cost down2 points

Having seen "The Rock" in person, let me testify that it does indeed suck. Was it better than Fouts? Yes. But, it is way behind Apogee, and it isn't even close.2 points

I was of the understanding the athletic department could raise the fee by 10% each year, until it was maxed out.1 point
-
Maybe the university didn't want the athletic department to raise it in the same year they are raising tuition. I'd be shocked if it didn't increase next year with the move to C-USA, and the athletic department tie the increase to the additions of baseball and another women's sport.1 point

Well, we know that both UTSA and TSSM are going to charge their students the state max. I believe that the BOR can raise NT's in increments of 1% until it is at the max also, however I am not sure anyone understands the limitations of the state approval which is tied to the stadium construction. I think NT should raise the student athletic fee to the extent they can, but it is also time to substantially increase other revenue streams. The stadium was a necessary cost, but the hard facts are that by using such a big part of available resources on it, operating funds suffer. It is apparently a closely guarded secret, how much outside of the student athletic fees was actually raised for the stadium. Naming fees and premium seating aside; how much was actually donated for construction. My guess, not much or it would have been announced. NT like most lower tier universities are primarily financed by their students and state funds. In Texas, no direct state funds, so it is operating revenues, donations and students. NT is going to have to get a lot better attendance and donation support to grow; students fees are limited and there is definitely an ethics issue on how much you can rely on student funds. As aside in today's DMN, there was an article on tutiton increase by the local schools. NT was at the top in the amont increased, but suprising to me is still a lot cheaper than fellow state schools; UTD and UTA.1 point

Maybe Jethro and his cousin will have a different opinion of our facilities after they park their short bus in the Fouts lot, walk the new pedestrian bridge to Apogee, take their seat in the visitors section (with a nice panoramic view of the alumni section and the press box), enjoy some well prepared stadium concessions, and witness the near biblical destruction of their beloved Golden Eagles at the hands of Coach Mac's Mean Green. I guess they can drive by Jerry World on their way back to Hooterville, and question whether it's even capable of hosting NFL games.1 point
