  6. I read the chapter on North Texas from Hayden Fry's remembrances and most were as I remembered them, a few I hadn't heard of and a couple had minor slips. Hayden was a great guy. He liked to spin a few yarns without facts getting in his way. He and Lou Holtz were the best. Hayden almost pulled off getting us into the Southwest Conference. He especially had the support of Darrell Royal who was the most important advocate that you could have in your corner. Contrary to some opinions, there was never any announced opposition to North Texas being in the SWC. Conversely, there wasn't a lot of vocal support either other than DKR. The only reasons stated in opposition were that our academics were suspect and several didn't want a 10-team conference. The former argument was valid except that we were not the only one with lower entrance requirements. At one time it was easy to get into NT. All you needed was a high school diploma. Staying in was the hard part. There were many students who only lasted one year. They went on scho pro the first semester and flunked out the next. Few came back. The requirements slowly changed but had not yet reached the level that the private schools would find acceptable. I do believe that had we been voted in that we would have immediately changed our requirements. The argument against ten members would have had more merit had not the two premier conferences, the Big 10 and the SEC, not been ten member conferences. The only rumored opposition that I heard came from Arkansas. It wasn't that the Hogs had anything against us personally it was just that we were another Texas university and they were the only out-of-state institution . I don't think that they would've voted against us had the application reached a vote but it seemed to slow the process and not long after that they left the conference. Had we been admitted to the Southwest Conference the time period would have been short lived. I think that we would've gone with Houston to CUSA since many had roots in the MVC.

  7. i'm pretty sure there are two things that outsiders can say about UNT right now to get us instantly fired up: 1.) Apogee sucks 2.) Tony Mitchell is overrated we should have more things on this list... we need to improve so that we get pissed off about everything!!!!

  8. There is a word I'm thinking of. It's a magic word. It can be a noun, an adjective, an adverb, a transitive verb, an intransitive verb, an interjection and an exclamation. It can describe pain, pleasure, hate and love. As one of the most useful and most frequently uttered words in the English language, I give absolutely zero of this word what somebody on a CUSA message board has to say about Apogee.

  11. You are definitely correct about SMU, TCU opposition, but I'm not so sure about Baylor. Fry was a Baylor alum and close to the BU AD at the time. Don't know for sure about Rice, but all the rest gave positive vibes. I even heard former TT AD Dewitt Weaver say that TT really thought NT would get the SWC bid that TT secured after the loss TT suffered in Fouts in the 50's.

  12. The dashboard camera is unblinking. But when gun laws are passed that allow citizens to protect themselves, there is always an outcry from anti-Second Amendment folks that law-abiding citizens will somehow take the law to the extreme and turn society into the Wild West. That's what they argued when Texas allowed conceal carry permits. They said fender benders at 4-way stop signs would escalate into a shootout. They said children would be slaughtered at amusement parks if someone accidentally stepped on someone's foot. They said the streets of Texas would run with blood. None of that happened, quite the contrary. Glen White, former president of the Dallas Police Association said "All the horror stories I thought would come to pass didn't happen. No bogeyman. I think it's worked out well, and that says good things about the citizens who have permits. I'm a convert." It truly underscores the difference between the right and the left... specifically, that people on the left do not trust their fellow citizens to behave in a responsible manner and as such require government supervision and guidance on all things, even if it requires stripping such a fundamental human right as Self-Defense.

  17. I rememember back in the day when we first got SMU back on our schedule in the NCAA 's modern era (circa, 1974) how many times after those games were played how the rest of the season seemed anti-climatic to some extent. CUSA with the regionalized division we will be in will give us many home and away games starting in 2013 which will create so much more interest for conference games than we have now that playing schools not far from Denton will create. It will also be fun to have more than 1 conference opponent that come to Apogee who will bring 2,000 and more fans to Denton, too. That sorta' thing just spices up a college football game IMO. And won't most of our CUSA division school's be bringing their marching bands most years, too?

  20. It's been a good ten years since I've been to Hattiesburg, and I wasn't overly impressed with their stadium at that time or their campus buildings. The stadium kind of looked like Rice Stadium divided by half, which isn't terrible, but not anything which justifies his trash mouthing other stadiums. Especially new state of the art and easily expandable Apogee. The only negative I get out of Apogee is the parking for the masses, and as someone posted earlier, that is very much still a work in progress. I sure hope all USM grads/students aren't as ignorant as that guy. Maybe he's just blind as a bat and needs to find himself a new wife who passes on less disinformation.

  29. Bingo. I am the same way. Haven't been to the campus since the basketball charity event. There are way better destinations in DFW and Denton isn't doing much to make itself one.

  30. We were not just that strong in the late 70's but the late 60's as well. Corky Nelson absolutely amazed me in the eighties with his ability to have a I-AA team go toe to toe time and again with D-! teams. Victories over Rice, TT and very closes misses to OSU,UT, and KSU. You just have to wonder what Fry and/or Nelson could have done with today's resources at their disposal.

  33. Nevada 1990s isn't Nevada 2012, coming off a 7th consecutive bowl trip. And, "hosting" at Texas Stadium? Kudos to Texas State's athletic department. I'd love to have Tech and Nevada at Apogee. Nevada would be an excellent gauge of where we are. Tech, of course, would mean a sell out, with the possibility of television.

  35. Been waiting for a Fox news story on this since it happened, Thursday May 31st. Haven't seen one., so I had to post a story from another, less credible source. http://thegrio.com/2012/06/05/75-year-old-milwaukee-man-charged-with-shooting-unarmed-black-teen/#47721777 This is a tragedy of Epic proportions, but the Justice system needs to work it's course so this gentleman, who admits to shooting this unarmed teen, is treated not as a guilty criminal, but as a involved party in a shooting. Others on this board have made me realize, I should not jump to a conclusion when an unarmed black teens life is taken without cause.

  38. You win again Captain Buzzword. Me and my liberal playbook... I could care less about you're stance that "people don't need to publically display ther sexuality." I get what you're saying and in many cases agree with you. The video was in response to a post insinuating that referring to what Mr. Davis had done as courageous was in some way an affront to the image of "the white, straight, Christian, male." As someone who considers themselves a Christian as well, that idea sickens me.

  41. "allows residents to use deadly force in response to the "unlawful intrusion" by a "public servant" to protect themselves and others, or their property." Which is exactly what the Second Amendment was intended to protect. Now... if you pull a gun on an officer who pulls you over, you better damn well be able to prove your it was an "unlawful intrusion" and that your life was is danger. 42. SECTION 1. IC 35-41-3-2, AS AMENDED BY P.L.189-2006, SECTION 1 (i) A person is justified in using reasonable force against a public servant if the person reasonably believes the force is necessary to: (1) protect the person or a third person from what the person reasonably believes to be the imminent use of unlawful force; (2) prevent or terminate the public servant's unlawful entry of or attack on the person's dwelling, curtilage, or occupied motor vehicle; or (3) prevent or terminate the public servant's unlawful trespass on or criminal interference with property lawfully in the person's possession, lawfully in possession of a member of the person's immediate family, or belonging to a person whose property the person has authority to protect. (j) Notwithstanding subsection (i), a person is not justified in using force against a public servant if: (1) the person is committing or is escaping after the commission of a crime; (2) the person provokes action by the public servant with intent to cause bodily injury to the public servant; (3) the person has entered into combat with the public servant or is the initial aggressor, unless the person withdraws from the encounter and communicates to the public servant the intent to do so and the public servant nevertheless continues or threatens to continue unlawful action; or (4) the person reasonably believes the public servant is: (A) acting lawfully; or ( engaged in the lawful execution of the public servant's official duties. (k) A person is not justified in using deadly force against a public servant whom the person knows or reasonably should know is a public servant unless: (1) the person reasonably believes that the public servant is: (A) acting unlawfully; or ( not engaged in the execution of the public servant's official duties; and (2) the force is reasonably necessary to prevent serious bodily injury to the person or a third person. As a police officer, it does not bother me. People who are breaking the law are going to try and kill me no matter what. If you take the time to read this, it will say "REASONABLE PERSON". Most reasonable people aren't going to assume that officers walking around are using unlawful force. That is why we wear those uniforms and badges. To Identify ourselves. When we go to a house, we announce ourselves. Bad guys don't need a law to shoot at us, they will do so no matter what. If you look at the reasoning behind the law, there was a hypothetical of an individual raping someone's daughter or wife. Before the law, one could not take action agasint the officer. THAT was the reasoning behind the law. To me, I think it is extreme and overkill, but the law doesn't read any different to me. In Texas, you can use reasonable force to resist unlawful actions. Move along, nothing to see here. Take the anti gun, anti conservative, anti NRA rants somewhere else.

  45. Other than Rice, all schools in the old SWC were reasonably easy to get into in those days. I know a guy who got into Baylor with an SAT well under 800 back in the early 80's. The guy was probably quite a bit smarter than his test scores reflected, but 8:00 Saturday morning was generally not the best time of the week for this particular guy to be showing off his academic prowess.

  46. Nice post Evan. That letter illustrates how keeping history alive is one way to show the uninformed that we are much more than just a former 1AA team trying to move up to big boy football.

  47. We were definitely lacking in those areas, but Fry seemed intent on pushing through and fighting it until he realized that the bowls were a "no-go" at the time for Mean Green football...no matter what did That was probably the last straw for him and the catalyst for him deciding to head to Iowa. I don't blame him, really. In an era that did not have internet or social media exposure, the bowls were all the more valuable for their exposure/reward. To read that LaTech made it to a bowl after we beat them 41-14 the week before, and the bowls still wouldn't take our 7 (or 9, can't remember) win team. That'd piss me off too.

  49. And as much as I love Coach Hayden Fry and what he did for North Texas, he also told this story to the demoines register...... Written by RANDY PETERSON REGISTER STAFF WRITER FILED UNDER Sports Sports Extras Hayden Fry knew it was time to move on when the pressing matter of the day was the layout of the women's locker room in the new basketball facility at North Texas State. "As athletic director at North Texas State, I'd just hustled $26 million to build a new basketball arena," Fry, 75, recalled last week. "The women's coach knocked on my door, said there's an emergency and could I walk across the street with her to the arena. "When I got there, we talked 35 minutes about how to arrange the women's locker room. I hustled $26 million and we've got an emergency with the bathroom. "I walked back across the street and said to myself, 'Fry, you're out of your mind. We're going someplace else.' '' Amongst the many exaggerations that Hayden Fry has put out through the years, this has to be the biggest. Actually it's a big fat lie. Ground breaking for the coliseum took place in 1972 (Fry was HC at SMU) and it was opened in 1973 (Fry was hired at the end of 1973). There was no fundraising involved in building the coliseum. So, this seriously calls into question his comments about SMU not being opposed to our membership in the SWC. Because he still had friends there, and I believe that one of them had been his broker. Here is the link.........http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20040704/SPORTS11/50708005/Hayden-Fry-University-Iowa-2004
