  1. Oh, and you're a douche.

  2. Scheduling schools like LSU is never good. Those schools tend to have much more depth than schools like us, and more often than not our teams leave those games horribly banged up. You need to develop depth and a certain level of overall talent before taking on a school like LSU.

  3. I know. In my silliness, I think words like "courageous" should be saved to describe people who... really are courageous. You know, military personnel who have excelled in battle conditions (no, just being a member of the military is not in itself courageous), people who have demostratred the ability to run toward danger while others are running away, you know, things like that. It's not "courageous" to have sex, whether with a man or a woman. It's not "courageous" to proudly proclaim the sex of the person with who you are having sex. It is simply self absorbed look-at-me-ism. It wouldn't have even been "courageous" if this guy (who no one had ever heard of before his "courageous" coming out) had come out while he was actually playing in the NFL. I can't help but wonder why he didn't make that "courageous" decision...

  4. Two years, a 7 win season; maybe 3 and 4 star recruits?

  5. There are two ways to go about it. 1. Play the hardest possible schedule we can play. Beat the big SEC & Big 12 teams on the road and prove to everyone that we are big and bad. Then recruits will flock to us and the stadium will be full for our 5 home games each year. or 2. Play 6 home games. Play beatable FBS teams. For once try the path of least resistance against the easiest schedule possible. An early win against against UTSA or TS for example, would breath life into the schedule. An early bad beating by LSU or Alabama hurts not only our record but our home attendance and our recruiting down the road. Recruits want to play on a winning team. Fans want to see a team that is winning games. A team can play LSU and get beat by 30 points, make a lot of improvements, and still get beat by 30 points. You just see their starters longer. I don't get too giddy over a moral victory as it is just another L in the loss column.

  9. TCU and BSU, before becoming BCS busters, played relatively easier FBS opposition. That doesn't mean play schools that are perceived as worse than you, but it means playing more beatable schools from more highly regarded conferences. Beating Louisville and UCF last year was huge for us for a number of reasons. Both schools are perceived as better programs, both schools are seen as being in better conferences, and both schools recruit heavily in South Florida. Unfortunately we hit a mid-season slump, but the wins over UCF and Louisville got us a lot of early attention. UNT could probably schedule lower tier Big 12, ACC and BE schools, and a win against those would be worth that much more in extra publicity.

  10. You are looking out the window on a Tuesday seeing that is raining and concluding that the picnic on Saturday has to be cancelled. The debt service is to be paid by FUTURE revenues. First if a developer builds a new 12 story, 300 room state of the art hotel it will generate a substantial increase in hotel revenues.. Second Denton is one of the fastest growing areas in the country again hotel tax revenues will increase. Third, the convention center will generate an increase hotel taxes from all the hotels n the city. Fifth will UNT and TWU continuing to grow resulting in an increase in hotel taxes. With UNT moving to the C-USA, there will be an increase in sports tourism that will increase hotel taxes. Sixth, the convention center itself is a revenue generator. The convention center generates rent income. Denton is located perfectly for DFW regional convention activity. If you were to examine the current expenditure of 1.2 million, you would realize that much of that is directed to developing future projects to encourage tourism and economic activity including a convention center. Although, the total cost of this project is $85 million only a small portion of this project is the convention center. The twelve story hotel/restaurant will be financed by the O'rielly family. We're not talking about a huge amount of debt to be financed by the city. UNT gains lease revenues and use of the convention center. The Hotel and Conference Center project will be a great revenue generator for the city of Denton. Many university meetings and events must be shuffled to other metroplex cities because Denton has no comparable hotel and meeting facilities. The new convention center will result in a huge cost savings for University meetings and events and provide new revenue opportunities for the University and the City. It is extremely shortsighted not to realize the business that will "trickle down" to all merchants and service businesses in Denton. This is not to mention the boost to sales tax revenue. Any passed on costs will be far exceeded by the expansion of business that this project brings. This a project that has joint participation with the city of Denton and UNT. The City will have a vested interest in the area west of I-35 on and near the UNT campus. The City of Denton will have to widen bridges and access roads to Apogee and the west campus facilities as economic activity expands. The Hotel and Conference center project will result in other businesses locating near to the convention center and UNT sports venues.

  11. So....then North Texas is 338 miles from Denton? I know it's a long walk from the Fouts parking lot to Apogee, but this is ridiculous!

  13. Some very good points made in this thread, and it would be very hard to disagree with anything said. However, I would also add that one reason the "outside" perception of UNT is what it is can be in part traced to the fact that UNT's own like to criticize and complain and everything that is the Mean Green and do it in VERY public ways. Folks, this stuff hurts more than you know. During my banking days I heard it over and over again when visiting with clients and when when discussions turned to sports. It often came up on the golf course as well with clients. Can't tell you how many times I was asked why UNT fans complain about UNT so much. It's well known around the metroplex...as least in the business circles I worked within for some 30+ years. So, one needs to think about that as well. To me, except for a very hard core but declining group of "the sky is falling and everything is done better elsewhere" crowd, this perception is changing within the Mean Green family. And that, folks, is a very good thing indeed. Mean Green pride is returning and retuning in a big way, even among our student body and faculty and staff it appears. Perhaps it is time for the "everything is bad crowd" to take note. As with re-building a winning program from pretty much ashes and improving facilities, it takes time! This will not happen overnight or even within a year or two, but progress is and will continue to be made. If some would just stop looking for every little thing THEY think is a problem, they might even be able to see some good stuff happening and changing. It's hard to see the good stuff with one's head buried deeply in the "sky is falling and everything is bad" sand...or elsewhere and when folks who think that way seem to only communicate with those of a like mindset. Winning is definitely number one in getting UNT "over the hump". And that involves recruiting, facilities, coaches, etc. And, it takes time and dollars. UNT has the time, but donor dollars are another thing. Folks like to compare UNT with other programs and what they do and how they do it, but all to often fail to compare staffing numbers, budgets and donor numbers and dollars. I'm enjoying the ride and hope that the ride to the top culminates while I am still "young" enough to enjoy it. Yes, it takes time...Anyone who has even half-a brain knows that...what we all should consider is being supportive of the program in public and doing what we as individuals can do to help....you decide what you can do and are willing to do...but we can all be positive about the university and the athletic program in public. Everyone probably knows the saying...."criticize in private, praise in public". Seems like a great idea to me. Now, let the winning begin as that cures more ills in college sports than just about anything. On that we can all probably agree.

  15. Who cares? Maybe other gay athletes or gays in general who are trying to find the courage to come out and actually be themselves? If more stories come out like this, it could allow more people to feel confident to do this. It takes a courageous action for someone to come out, let alone publicly when you were a public figure (although I had no clue who Wade Davis is).

  18. The city doesn't have to carry the entire note, just the public portion of the project (the convention center). The city has 300k-500k room in the hotel/motel fund to carry the debt service on the public portion of the project. Plus the city will likely dedicate all the taxes generated from the project toward covering the project. The project may even get an assist from the state legislature like the new CC in Amarillo is getting. Point is this not break the bank and cause a property tax increase.

  19. "If anyone here thinks that after one year and a 5 win season that 4 & 5 star recruits are going to be flocking to UNT, you are NUTS!" You can't spell NUTS without UNT.

  20. Obvious winning is important but it is not absolutely necessary to boost recruiting. Vito's hero Dickey recruited the 2000 class the best maybe ever at NT after seasons of 3-8, 2-9 and 3-8. That team included 6 state 100 picks in Gardner, Buckles, Kennedy, Ridgeway, Taylor and Hall. All with the exception of Ridgeway' who was actually scheduled to start his second year and than disappeared, turned out to be super players for NT. Add to that in the same class Zuniga, Spencer, Brewster and Kadulbar; all multiple year all conference players and it is obvious that class was special. The question how did that class develop with a bad losing record, poor facilities, and a recent move into the Belt? NT has not come anywhere close to that class in the last decade plus. I have no idea how that class was recruited but it does illustrate that it is certainly possible to excel in recruiting despite losing records. I don't expect miracles out of McCarney and staff; but this program doesn't need excuses; it need substantial steady improvement in recruiting. I recognize that NT has a lot of baggage from bad football but if a class like 2000 could happen playing at Fouts with one of the worst paid staffs in football, it certainly not impossible to rapidly improve that element of the program.

  32. There's enough land at Fouts for the hotel/convention center, mega parking garage and academic building. Additionally, a basketball practice facility. Overall, enough room for a nice size junior college. With a pedestrian bridge, the hotel makes more sense at Fouts.
    1 point
  33. As exciting as the public policy sub-debate is the numbers are wrong. Denton pulls in $2 million dollars a month in taxable hotel revenue, that's something like $1.7 million a year in hotel occupancy taxes. So I'm betting Denton can pay the debt service on it's share of the convention center without tapping the General fund.

  36. This is where I disagree. The kid from Paris just got invited to A&Ms upcoming camp with interest from others including SMU, Tulsa and Arkansas. Sometimes being first in is all it takes to get a kid, I don't see why we should wait for others to make an offer first.mdoesnt make much sense if you feel he is worthy of a ship. Tulsa has 5 commits thus far, three of which had no other offers yet are 3* recruits. We didn't offer any of their prospects. Rice has 0 commits, La Tech 1 commit, UTEP 1 commit. This is who were competiting against at this time. It would be nice to go against SMU, UH, and Baylor and win a recruiting battle but sadly that's not where we are at this point. So if you nd others want to say that after 2 recruits that this class is not looking good then be my guess. All I know is we haven't had many 6'3 LB's with blazing speed come through here lately.

  37. Who in the hell, said anything about winning recruiting battles against the teams you named. Yes, I do follow recruiting; do you? At this point; I would be happy winning a few against the Tulsa, La Tech, and the like. I also wonder about reactions to almost anything mentioned that has to do with recruiting, if it isn't rave reviews. I stated both commits thus far were lightly recruiting but had great potential. What in that statement do you disagree with? These are obviously players that Mc and company think can help the program. However, my comment was not related to them; as much as Mac overall recruiting to date; a lot of "under the radar", "hidden jewel", type of players. Nobody at this point knows if McCarney and Company are any better evaluating talent than the norm; that will take a couple of years. Maybe most of you didn't expect any better recruiting than early Dodge or Dickey; but I did. So far I have not seen that, maybe it will happen this year. NT has a great new stadium, by far the highest paid football staff in history, and a new conference; factors that should help in recruiting. No, I don't expect NT to have success against the football powers or even SMU at this point but I do think they better start winning a lot of recruiting battles against their future and current conference mates. I am fairly consistent with my recruiting assessment, I have questioned a lot of classes and been told by many like you how wrong I am. Problem is that all those recruiting classes that have been raved about by many have resulted in a lot of poor teams.

  38. Just a thought, here. Any chance of bad blood over the Odoh decommit? Maybe a phone call to LSU by someone in the know on the degree deal? This is complete conjecture on my part, but college athletics is a dirty ass game.

  40. I'm very humbled by all the nice things you and the rest of the folks have posted about Andrew - Thanks! Yes, he also Powerlifts and throws the Shot and Discus in Track...he'll actually be down in Weslaco tomorrow and Saturday for the Region IV Powerlifting Meet. Because of the Jr. Day visits, he's only been able to attend one track meet this season...took first in the Discus with a throw of 148'11". Hasn't really had the time to practice either shot or discus, but after the powerlifting season, he should start getting back into form. He actually qualified last year for the Reg. IV meet throwing the discus. Tell me more about the MG caravan down 281. . .

  42. Good gosh. Saying that people don't need to publically display ther sexuality is saying that god hates them because they are gay???? Again, straight out of the liberal playbook. If anyone disagrees with the liberal point of view, personalize it and demonize them. No one insinuated anything, other than to keep your gayness or your heterosexuality to yourself. Wait, is gay a bad word yet? Give it a couple of years. It will be.
