Girls win 4 by 400 and track championship. What a finish, 4 Belt championships for NT this year/6 points

Track is largely ignored, but one of my favorite sports. I didn't know what to think of the hire for new track director but he has started very well considered he was not here for recruiting last year and the men's team in particular was really short handed. The girls winning the championship was great. When WKU tied them with one event to go, I thought it was over for the championship. WKU had the best time in the conference in the 4x400 at 3:45.01. The NT girls with 3 freshmen running, Jamilia Cartwright, Chastity Stewart and Kendria Burton and one junior Ashley Harrison blew away WKU running a 3:42.74. Others that had metal meets: Men: Steven White probably the best athlete in the conference, won first in the 400 hurdles with 50.68 The Men's 4x100 won, team included Hickman, White, Collins and Fowler Matt Ross got a 3rd in the 1500 Clinton Collins got 2nd in 400 NT also got 2nd in the 4x400, White, Fowler, Hickman and Collins again Women: Sarah Vann 2nd in P. V. at 11'8, Sarah Korn tied for 3rd at 11'2.25 Chelsea Hermes 2nd in very tough heptathlon Shahaf Bereni won high jump and set conference meet record at 5'11 1/4 Sara Dietz finished out great NT career won 1500, Josephine Adams got 2nd Ashley Harrison third in 400 Sara Dietz second in 800, Adams got 3rd Ashley Starks got a 2nd in 100 hurdles5 points

Let's be honest, C-USA was not going to upgrade. Nobody was going to leave the Big East, SEC, or Big 12 to move to C-USA. Tulsa should thank their stars that C-USA didn't fall apart around them and leave them out to dry like NM State or Idaho. While Tulsa may have a high opinion of itself, it is a small school in a media market the size of Schenectady... AND with two large competing fanbases of Big 12 state universities. YOU'RE WELCOME, Mr. Upham.3 points

As one of very few people in this world who hold degrees in both History and Accounting, I definitely identify with the tweener status. I was also in a fraternity! I refuse to view any of these sides as wholly bad, dispassionate, or not of value to the university. They just typically have different interests and priorities. That's why it's a UNIVERSity, not the Denton College of Football Zealots. It's actually good for all of is to have to interact with such a wide range of students, alumni and community residents.3 points

And when AQ is gone, it means that five conferences will split the same money five ways instead of six. Not sure how the AQ removal is a good thing. It's not like CUSA or MWC (or the Big East) will have a better chance in the new system.3 points

New signee, Dutton Watson, DE from Midland, got 4th place in 5A state title in discus. Congrats Dutton2 points

I would say back when the NCAA lost the power of TV contracts is really the cause of the realignments... it happened back in the late 80s early 90s... but only now are we understanding what that meant2 points

We are very fortunate to have this man as President of our university. A lot of good things have happened at North Texas since he arrived and I do not think that is a coincidence.2 points

I agree....good news from the Prez, however, you stereotyped just about every possible student type at the university and you want the community to be "enthusiastic". People rarely conform to these easy characterizations. I've known business majors who didn't have the slightest clue who the football or basketball teams were playing and music majors who attended every game they could. Some Greeks support the team well, others don't. The same could be said of every "type" of student you could classify. How about just saying.....we invite all students to help elevate the university?2 points

Ok...you coach your team, I'll coach LeRon Dendy, Malcon Kirkland, Jeremy Allen, Will Weathers, Fred Brown and Chalres Winborne...6 of the top 20 scorers in conference....though, in fairness Kore White should wear a reversible jersey...and we'll see who wins. Players moving on is simply part of the landscape...loyalty has little to nothing to do with it...a kid has 4-5 years to live out their dream of playing college ball and I have no problems with them doing whatever it takes to maximize their opportunity.2 points

Nothing short of a 16 team tournament using the bowls as playoff sites proves a legit national championship. I also favor only conference champions being participants. Even in the present system, teams that finish worse than 3rd in ANY conference should not be bowl game participants, and no I do not think there are too many bowls or else there wouldn't be quality teams like WKU in 2011 that are left out every year.2 points

I can understand the disappointment of loosing their natural rival SMU. On the other hand there is no doubt Lane Rawlins is thrilled with the effects of recent conference realignments.2 points

To answer the question posed in the title of this thread, yes, if they are transferring away from North Texas, and no, if they are transferring to North Texas.2 points

Thank you Ernie for all that you do. How do I get a hold of you and send in my 50, 100, 500, 1000 etc. donation to help you build this (renovate an existing facility) on campus. Instead of talking about where or how it should be done, or criticise everything that we do or have, I would actually like to help with this project.2 points

Best year ever overall in the Belt. It is something that NT should have been doing for the last ten years. NT really didn't have a bad team this year. RV and NT has steadily improved the so called non-revenue sports and although it doesn't matter much this year, NT has I believe one less sport than MTSU and two less than WKU. The competition in most sports is going to be a lot tougher in CUSA but I think NT will compete very well from the start.1 point

No wonder I don't remember it. The dark era of NT football.1 point

The brutal band hazing that occurs at Florida A&M has been known for years. Chains, brass knuckles, 2x4s... things that would normally get you a felony assault charge or even attempted murder. It actually took somone dying before anyone did a thing about it, and even then you have trustees who were worried about TICKET SALES!!! Are you not worried about what type of human beings you are shaping into future leaders???1 point

I used to hang (when I had the time) with the weirdos more than any other group at North Texas. I truly enjoyed being with them. But I also really liked football, which made me a "tweener" at North Texas. To a certain extent, I still am. Just a guess, but I would be willing to bet that UT had it's "rah-rah-sports-school spirit" culture in place long before it's counter-culture crowd became so .......... noticeable. But still small by comparison. Historically, probably the same at North Texas. But our sports culture was kept at such a minimum level by our administration that the "counter-culture" caught up, and (numbers wise) was almost the same size as the "rah-rah-sports-minded" at North Texas.1 point

I agree. If weirdos and football didn't mix, UT Austin would be perennial bottom dwellers.1 point

I enjoyed the weirdos. I had a blast in Denton. To bad the Fry Street Fair went away. That was awesome. Denton is great.1 point

I don't know if there's a correlation our not, but I recently looked at the college football standings in 1990. The number of independent teams was astounding.1 point

Before enrolling at North Texas in the early 70's I remember being asked by someone in my hometown about where I was going to attend school. When I told him NT, he said "so, you're going to go to school with all those "weirdos?" . North Texas has had a non-sports reputation for a very long time. Sometimes I think that that is what grew it's student population because all of the students in High School who were very active in their school activities (student body elections, cheerleaders, pep squads, various other organizations) made the decision to go to other schools. Even though they might have been much better served academically at North Texas. Because they wanted their college experience to be more UT, A$M, T-Tech-like. Maybe many of those "weirdos" have changed their views "down the corridor of years" and would be more open to attending sports functions, and we should keep trying to reach out to them. But I tend to agree with you oldguy, the major "culture change" at North Texas will happen at the front door.1 point

Tulsa president like most of remaining CUSA fans fill that a great disservice has been done to their programs. Losing Houston, UCF, SMU, Memphis and replacing them with the unworthy. Obviously, the presidents voted in the new Universities and thus I fail to see why they are so disappointed with any of the choices. Just like the jilted Belt members who feel some how betrayed by the schools leaving, it is the same in CUSA. Tulsa is a tiny school who has done very well considering in college athletes. I always like the privates who play up academics compared to other schools but basically recruit the same players everyone else does. This is not the English soccer league were the bottom teams are replaced, and the winning teams moved up. There are lots of factors involved. The ones that are losing ground are somewhat rightly bemoaning the emphasis on markets and potential more than historical performance. They ignore that most of the current athletic hierarchy is based on factors that occurred fifty to a hundred years ago. No one at Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas, Notre Dame, etc. had anything to go with schools being in the top tier of athletics. They may have contributed to the colleges maintaining those positions and how they are placed in the upper category but not getting them there. The current realignments are moving away from that historical placement of teams and if nothing else are giving a few of the lower class citizens of college sports who happen to have the right demographics a chance to move up.1 point

Makes demands that the community wake up. Insults greater than 50% of the community before end of sentence. I am duly impressed. Denton, what a great place it would be were it not for those rascally Dentonites. No matter what you do, UNT will always have a significant population that will not be into sports. Acknowledge that and let it go. Then work on the growing student population and alumni base from the colleges that are more likely to care, and more likely to graduate into careers that afford alumni contributions. Be active, not bitter.1 point

Great words by a great man. Only wish the "community" would awaken and realize that the biggest employer in town is a decisive factor in growing Denton into an active college town and permit it to be viewed as an integral part of a rapidly expanding DFW metroplex. The enthusiasm of the " community" might even awaken some of the Greeks, Geeks, Potheads, and Jazzheads in the student body!!!1 point
