  1. Some of the recent threads have me anticipating a very high flying team next year. We all know that MItchell can match anyone in the dunking department. He not only can get up but he has as quick a jump as I've seen. Now, he has lauded new big man; Coleman for his jumping ability. It is reported that Jordan Williams is taller and if it were not for MItchell, everyone at NT would be marveling at his jumping ability. Add in Patton who has big time hops and Jones who has reportedly the best vertical on the team. No, I have never even seen Jones attempt a dunk, but he won dunk contests in high school. Holmen and Alzee can also get up there. No records are kept, but I bet NT will have more slams than any NT team and may be close to the tops in the nation next year.

  2. For those of you speculating on the future of signee Clarke Overlander out of Argyle, TX, let the speculation cease regarding his status. Coach Benford made it very clear that Clarke is a part of the team and that he has a place on that team and that Coach has seen him play and he is pleased with him! The fact that some on here...and elsewhere were speculating on Clarke's future with the squad without any real first-hand knowledge was, for me, a bit disconcerting to see, and I am more than happy to have it behind us all now once and for all. Just from what I have witnessed and seen, Clarke Overlander may well surprise a few folks...our so-called basketball gurus here on GMG.Com and elsewhere...with his ability to earn playing time and become an integral member of what looks to be an excellent Mean Green team going into the 2013 season and beyond. The idea that he "couldn't compete" because he played for a 3A school was just beyond nuts! The idea that he should take a grey shirt and academic scholarship to free up space...well, laughable. Anyway, Clarke Overlander had opportunities to play elsewhere at the D1 level...this according to Coach Benford last evening...and he chose UNT because he wants to be here and he wants to play for UNT. His FIRST CHOICE of places to play. So, since it is settled once and for all...it was NEVER unsettled for me....never had any doubts about his remaining at UNT....and on athletic scholarship....let's all get behind Clarke and the rest of the team and this program and FILL THE SUPER PIT FOR NEXT SEASON'S FIRST GAME!!!! be there and bring some friends...it's going to be the first of many wins this year! Welcome aborad Clarke, P.J. and Keith....GO MEAN GREEN!

  3. I heard Benford say tonight that Mitchel loves Coleman! He said they went at it one on one and itchel said he never knew someone could get that high above the rim. He seems pretty high on Coleman.... If he can give Mitchel trouble I assume he is legit!

  5. I am not concerned with Josh's person in how it regards to his contract, so, no. Yep, one drink is a problem FOR HIM. However, twice now, his relapse has resulted in what damage to the team, exactly? If it results in his relapsing into drug addiction, that will void his contract. I've met Josh before, and he seems like a nice guy. But if all of his relapses are like the last two, then it's much ado about nothing in regards to the team. FWIW, Josh has stated multiple times that he's willing to have clauses put in place re: relapses and outside behavior. He's plenty accountable in that regard. As an addict, and a person who has very careful rules for how I cope, I know all too well what Josh has to deal with. It is, however, irrelevant to his contract. It is also irrelevant to my post. If you would like to make more ridiculous assumptions about my knowledge and/or character, I'd ask that you PM me. I read too much bs at work as it is.

  6. I still don't understand why the old snake pit is not used for a practice facility. It seems to be the right size and location. Building a new basketball practice facility seems a waste of money to me when there are so many other IMO better projects.

  9. I wonder how many people are annoyed by all the people drinking and the loud music in front of the gates of Apogee. It's easy to be in favor of banning behavior when it doesn't affect you, but keep in mind that this mentality can really apply to anything deemed "not good for you." I try to be courteous to the non-smokers around me, and I never smoke near kids.

  10. Ding ding ding. Tell him what he's won Bob "You've won five days and four nights in luxurious Reality! You'll be whisked way to a stunning resort where people realize Texas, Duke and Syracuse not coming to the Super Pit isn't merely because we haven't asked. Top program's don't just hand us home games..and it's that way for virtually ALL mid-majors! You, unlike some, won't have to bang your head against a wall aimlessly because you realize that if WE can recognize how good our team could be...so can other coaches. You'll return from this dream vacation refreshed with a modicum of perspective, and a happy disposition realizing where we've been and where we're headed."

  11. Coleman racked up three double-doubles last season for the Tigers, including a 17-point, 13-rebound outing against Southwestern (Iowa) CC. He shot 57.1 percent from the floor on the year and was named Honorable Mention All-Region XI. "I don't think Keith is a good get for North Texas - I think he's a great get," said JUCO expert Mike Mitchell, who co-hosts a Dallas tournament for the top 60 junior college teams in the country. "I had him as a top-five JUCO prospect in the nation, and I thought he was a great signee for Nebraska. With Keith lining up with Tony Mitchell every day I think North Texas' potential is through the roof. This is a legit guy." Following his time at Lee (Maine) Academy, Coleman was rated as the No. 23 center in the country by Scout.com and No. 37 by ESPN.com. Coleman, who checks in at 6-10 and 250-pounds, was listed as a three-star prospect by Rivals.com. “When I came to North Texas it really felt like home,” Coleman said. “From coach Benford, to Tony Mitchell and the rest of the guys, I really had a great connection with all of them, and I can’t wait to get to Denton and get started.” Coleman joins point guard P.J. Hardwick as the first signees under Benford. The Mean Green has averaged 21 wins per season over the last six years, and has reached the Sun Belt Tournament title game in each of the last three years. North Texas will be joining Conference USA for the 2013-14 season. http://www.meangreen...TCLID=205425222 Click here to view the article

  12. So i took a trip to the college insider, mid-maor top 25 website and, apparently, CUSA is not considered a mid-major conference. Granted, this applies to basketball only, but its still pretty interesting. I guess its just one of those things where i have to get use to what it will be like in CUSA.......... anyways.... just sayin..... here's the link http://www.collegeinsider.com/mmpoll/

  13. IMO, I don't think the Big East looks that much more attractive from a tv standpoint if they wouldn't have an AQ if they were still around

  14. The mid major poll is meaningless. Just helps smaller schools feel better about themselves. I'm glad CUSA isn't included.

  17. As always Cerebus, you make some excellent points. In many ways, the A-10 is good fit for the VCU/GMU. It is true, A10 sent THREE teams to the NCAA Mens Finals last year. All of them won at least one game, one of them made it to the Sweet 16. The A10 has been a multibid conference 26 out of the 35 years it has existed. CUSA is losing Memphis with its 3 final fours, 8 elite eights and 11 sweet 16s. But, this maybe extactly why C-USA maybe more appealing than the A-10. First, the three teams that made it to the NCAA Mens Finals last year are not going anywhere. By joining the A-10, GMU/VCU are entering an almost impossible enivironment to win a conference championship or an additional at large bid to the NCAA. Can VCU/GMU stand out in a crowded room? However in the C-USA, with the addition of Old Dominion and Charlotte, not to mention up and coming programs like UNT, there will still be plenty of quality basketball. With Memphis leaving it creates a vaccuum but also a unique opportunity, GMU/VCU would be in the hunt for a conference championship and an automatic NCAA bid, almost immediately. In the C-USA GMU/VCU would certainly stand out in a room with bigger media exposure and money. Let's be honest at best GMU/VCU coming to the C-USA is a long shot. But wouldn't it be great to watch some of these teams at the Superpit?

  19. I guess I started this whole mess by suggesting he grey shirt based on us having to lose 2 players. I assumed that maybe benford let the 2 signees go. I didn't want to lose Clarke, that's why I suggested what I did. I don't think it was out of the realm of possiblity that the 2 signees would be asked to ask for their release. Marquette just did the same thing w/ the Durley kid. I've never said I didn't want Clarke here. My apologizes to anyone who took my idea and thought otherwise. One of the 1st texted I received when he 1st verballed was from a AAU coach who said Clarke was probably the best pure shooter in all of DFW for the 2012 class. What's not to like about that ??? I'm very happy he's on board. His playing time may be limited this year , but he should have a chance at big minutes down the road once we lose some key players like Walton & Patton If I sound in anways like I slighted the kid , I truly do apologize. Ive never had an issue critizing coaches or the AD , but the last thing I would ever want to do is sound like im being critical of a KID Welcome aboard & let's go dancing !!!

  20. I think you're right, in this divorce is the big issue who gets custody of which kids. NCAA rules do not permit the creation of a football only conference. Those schools who see themselves as primarily football schools would have to form a new conference in all sports including basketball and meet Title IX requirements. What happens to the twins, Memphis and Temple, do they go with mommy (basketball) or daddy (football). My bet is mommy. What happens to Boise State and San Diego State, the two foster children, they are football only members. Do they go with Daddy, but add their other sports because of Title IX issues. They could be placed in new foster home the MWC. If I was one of the foster kids I be hoping for a new home before things get ugly between mommy and daddy. My bet is daddy gets to keep the house (remains the Big East Conference) and mommy moves out (forms a new conference.) Some of the older children like Louisville may want strike on there own and head west to to a grandparent (the BIG 12 or the BIG 10). The foster children are placed in a new home (MWC). Finally the concern Aunt (C-USA) sits back and enjoys the show.

  21. Indeed...Great getting to meet you as well. I ALWAYS like getting to meet fellow GMG.Com folks and fans of the Mean green. Looking forward to getting to know you even better in the coming months...keep posting and keep supporting the Mean Green! WOW! All I can say is that it was a GREAT event last night. Loved getting to hear from Coach Mac, RV, Coach Murczek, Coach Peterson and Coach Benford! Having the Pep band, Cheer Squad and Dance Team represented really gave it a celebratory feel. If you cannot get excited about the present and future of Mean Green Athletics now I just don't know how you will ever be excited. The future seems so very bright right now. Great crowd...and should get even better as the years go by. If you could not attend last evening's event at Apogee, do yourself a big favor (and take a friend with you) and make one of the remaining three in either Dallas, Ft. Worth or Plano. You will be super glad you did! Great event, well staged, great food, super atmosphere!

  30. Loss leader is the correct way of looking at this. I work in the food business, in sales, and I am heavily involved in daily market flucuations and these have dramatic effects on y life and my business. I would say that $.99 milk 3 years ago isn't far off from actual market price at that point in time. we saw similar prices a few times over the past few years while milk prices were skyrocketing. These were set by grocers underpricing their milk and placing it at the back of the store so that consumers would have to walk through the entire store before grabbing their milk. These prices were heavily advertised most of the time as well. Retail sales of milk is heavily subsidized by the government to help ensure that dairy nutrition is available for all, this has helped limit the astronomical rise of milk costs for everyone else. There are several reasons for this increase in prices, some of these are; drought - less water for the cows yields less milk corn - corn is a major food for dairy cows and the price of corn has grown more that the price of milk over the past few years. This is mainly due to the government mandating ethanol be used in gasoline. Corn growers have been forced to sell parts of their crops to ethanol production, the resulting reduction in the corn crop has grown the price of the grain. This has dramatically increased the price of raising not only cattle but a huge percentage of our food producing animals, chickens, eggs, pork etc. all of which use corn as a major food source. The easiest thing that we can do to help reduce the cost of food in this country is to immediately cease the mandated use of food (corn) as a way to artificially "extend" the functionality of petrochemical based fuels. When you track the recent spike in food costs it almost identically mirrors the cost of corn. Both spikes occur at the same time as the government's decision to put Thanksgiving in our gas tanks. Do your own math

  35. is it just me or does putting together every post regarding coleman from every topic on this board make him sound a lot like AlonZo Edwards 2.0? the fact that he's another big and raw young talent coming to us from Nebraska is just a coincidence but i feel like we saw these same posts a few years ago.

  36. Some great comments about Colemen especially those attributed to Mitchell. With Odoh not coming he seems a great replacement. However, I do wonder why Nebraska released him and why he didn't start in juco even as a freshman. The Juco was 15-15 and the big that was supposedly the best on the team signed with Idaho if the report I read was correct. He wasn't playing behind a bunch of great players. If he is as athletic as presented, he could quickly develop and even in his first year at NT, he could be the difference maker that some of us thought Odoh would be. Got my fingers crossed because this team is a center away from being something special.

  41. Well actually a 2a school, but honestly the reason a player doesn't see PT is Bc he just isn't good enough. I know he is just a freshman, but we are in win now mode. He is a project, and quite honestly if he wants to go develop elsewhere more power to him. I'm glad Benford said don't let the door hit you! Robinson surely saw the writing on the wall. No PT next year.

  44. I agree with your statement about it not being, "healthy for any school to ever feel that it has "arrived" or to be satisfied with the status quo." Of course, that applies to both UNT and SMU and yes I must admit that some of our beloved posters here are letting their pride overtake their humbleness. Forgive them. They were probably too young to remember how SMU taught us all about "The Pride Comes Before The Fall" I also do not believe that we have seen the end of conference realignment and that should the Big East implode it could severly damage UNT"s hope of finally breaking out. We'll see. As to your statement about SMU's powerbrokers not being overly concerned with what is going on at UNT, Hogwash! Of course they are. They aren't stupid. They have always kept a watchful eye on UNT, even if only an occasional glance once in awhile to make sure there was no potential threat brewing in Denton. SMU does have one very real and strong fear of something UNT has that SMU doesn't have and that's NUMBERS. Someone just recently printed those numbers in an article that I do not recall, to be in the neighborhood of 300,000 in the Metro-plex. I don't believe that but it probably is around 200,000 plus. True, UNT has failed to connect with them as well as generations of students and Denton area residents. Why? One can speculate all they want as to the reason for such a disconnect but decades of islolation, not being included in the top conference in a state where football is king may have a lot to do with it. Other than the Lone Star Conference and Southland, UNT has never been afforded the opportunity to establish long term rivalries with other D1A Texas schools at the level people in the State of Texas care about. The Missouri Valley, then Independence, D1AA, Big West and then Sun Belt. Wow! Who cares? Who among us doesn't know and understand the importance of public perception? You? Although the new CUSA may not seem to be quite as strong as it was and has been in the past it does finally give UNT the chance to establish some local rivialries. Whether Rice, Tulane, Tulsa, UTSA, and UTEP will be enough no one knows yet. However, SMU was very aware by joining the Big East they were allowing UNT an opportunity they have never had before in Athletics. Gamble? Who knows? However, the local TV press did a good job of not covering one of the biggest events in the history of UNT Athletics thereby depriving 200,000 or more of their listeners the good news. Happenstance? Coincidence? Yeah right. Sure. No one knows what will happen for sure. Will UNT finally break the shackles of always being the nobody in the metro-plex and state of Texas? Will the future see UNT adding an upper deck to Apogee because of ticket demand? Don't know. Can't say. Time will tell. But yes, the powerbrokers of SMU are watching closely. The culture and success at UNT could very well mushroom over night in the eyes of many but us old dudes know it will have taken decades. See you in 2014, of course that is contingent on your school not chickening out. Go Mean Green!!!

  45. Yes. Yes he is. It's sad how one losing moment can make someone so bitter they have to act like this.
    1 point
  46. Well, Robinson and Odoh are gone. Only time will tell if they are major loses. Colemen looks like a good pick up but I am not sure he is a world beater either. His numbers were not great on a mediore juco team and the new coach at Nebraka did release him while retaining several other jucos. With three years to play, he does appear to have a lot of up side, but it is far from a sure thing that he will turn out better than either of the players that NT lose in this shuffle.
