  3. This coming season is even more important now that a new conference is on the horizon. An overwhelming successful year sets the stage for entry into the new conferernce. It shows that the progress made by this coaching staff was no fluke. It also points out that North Texas was well worth the consideration of being chosen to make the move. Success of the field this year and the move next year will amount to nothing but good things in the upcoming recruiting season. Never put off until tomorrow what can be accomplished today.

  4. Should UNT try to block SMU if they attempt a return to CUSA ? Just kidding................just kidding..............just kidding............just kidding

  5. I stilll don't get that SMU to big east thing... so you go out to save a conference on the east coast with exactly one decently close team and everything else faaaaar away. But what is in it for SMU? You could say its for the AQ...but its not gonna be here anymore....you could say that was not clear then...but there had already been a whole lot of talk about MWC/CUSA getting their own AQ or the AQ being abolished. It was already a realistic possiblity. You could say its for the money... but SMU already has money... and with the teams that are gone and no AQ there really will not be enough money to justify punishing all your non-revenue sports and and getting beat 80-35 in basketball about 3 times a season...and the money is not gonna be nearly as good as people think. Ok all those nice NCAA bids in BB, but people are gonna be surprised how small the TV-offer will be with the new football lineup. ESPN does not need the Big east anymore to cover the east coast. NT-fans understand what advantage it is to be in the center of your conference, and not at the fringe. I always though that move was less than ideal for both sides, but I understood that the big east had to do something to survive....but i never understood what $mu got out of it, and I get it less and less.

  6. At this point in time, you may be right. You're also right that the Big East probably won't fail, which is very good for us because SMU will continue to be a bottom feeder. If North Texas can turn itself into a consistently GREAT athletic program and continue to upgrade/add facilities, then come next realignment we may just pass the little rich school known as SMU. Even though SMU continues to act all high and mighty, they can feel North Texas breathing down their backs and it scares them. Why do you think they continue to make big splash hires? Because their sports have been the exact definition of mediocre and they have nothing else going for them except their past, which will always be followed by an asterisk.

  7. When it comes to saying that "SMU won't play us" I think rather than seeing the entire historical record most posters here aren't long enough in the tooth to care about games that took place from 1922 to 1970 whatever. Since 1990 NT and SMU have met in football 4 times, with NT going 2 and 2. So it took from 1995 when we returned to I-A until 2006 to get a game with them. I myself stil wouldn't call that "ducking NT" either but I would definitely say it when it comes to men's basketball. The two schools have not met in that sport since 2002 despite many attempts by our AD to schedule them. Regardless, you truly are a pathetic individual. Your hatred for all things North Texas really makes you appear to be an obsessed, disturbed, sad sack of a human being as you trash the University all over various fan forums with long winded rants using many different names/handles. What on EARTH did North Texas ever do to you?! For Christ's sake, get the HELL over it already. I also imagine it pissed you off to NO end when we got the CUSA invite. Admit it..........you probably threw something through the wall, or kicked the crap out of your dog, didn't you? I suggest you put the EXTENSIVE time you have on our hands to a better, more productive use. Maybe the link below can help you get started. Good luck. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/forgiveness/MH00131

  9. SMU would go to the Southland before they'd admit they made a mistake (if it comes to that) and try to come back to CUSA. Yes, a bit melodramatic with the Southland part but some of you know where I'm coming from. Talked to a higher up this very AM about this and suggested UH and SMU would go with the MWC if this NCAA soap opera continues, but he said the MWC is probably holding a couple of spots open for Boise State and SDSU. As one of the last lines in the Bridge Over the River Kwai went: "This is insanity." GMG! PS: I look for the Big East to solidify but for how long is the main question now.

  10. The only way to make sense out of this is to conclude that Benford does not want Odoh and if that is the case he should be released. Seems odd that NT who doesn't have a real center would not want the leading shot blocker and rebounder in Div 1 of the Jucos. I have to have faith in Benford, but why wouldn't you take an afternoon or morning and drive to Hillsboro and meet a player who has signed with your school. Sounds very strange to me if Vito is correct in what he writes. Whether or not Benford wants Odoh, he deserves to be talked to about his future.

  12. Your growth has nothing to do with who from the Sun Belt goes with you, or what start-up schools CUSA takes in the east. It has little to do with CUSA at all. Your growth has to do with the grouping of schools you are associating yourself with in Texas....Rice, UTSA, UTEP, UNT. You have an excellent chance to come out on top of that group competitively and if you do that task then you will blow up in Texas and your attendance will be on the road to ECU/USM levels. CUSA can add MTSU, Western Nevada, or Athens Georgia Community College and its not going to effect your opportunity. Dominate those other 3 and you are set. Try not to become elitist though.

  13. I have been reading other CUSA boards. It's pretty interesting to read how different fans tend to behave. ECU fans talk a big game but seem to be pretty funny for the most part. Solid looking fan base. Tulane, Tulsa, and USM seem pretty well mannered but aren't really vocal. La Tech is really thrilled. I guess I don't blame them. We are too! UTSA folks seem genuinely happy and very excited about their future. They are getting dragged through the coals by a lot of people for no reason. They are in. Not much else to say. I think they will become a good program. San Antonio is a great town and will be fun to go watch games. They are going to rape a few other schools on recruiting. Speaking of UTSA bashing, UTEP seems to think they are super special. They have a horrid football history, shameful academics standards, and accept anyone who applies. They are super insecure and are bashing UTSA nonstop. Probably because UTSA has more to offer in the long run. They pimp El Paso continuously. I just moved from EP. It's an awful city with no redeeming qualities unless you like obese women, nothing to do, or Chico's Tacos. Unfit cuisine for a starving person I might add. (sorry in advance, El Pasoans will go crazy over that statement) Anyway, they are going crazy over UTSA. I wish our fans would chill out on mentioning Apogee every other word. (so does everyone else) Everyone knows we have a new stadium. We need to win or none of this stuff going on means crap. Marshal has some really awesome folks. Especially a current student that was apparently robbed by a swimmer during a one night stand after she peed his bed. Seriously, you can't make this stuff up. Great thread though. The rest of the schools are silent for the most part. It's going to be a fun conference.

  14. And their main production facilities as well as the HQ for Telemundo are in Miami. This is a brilliant idea. Several of the teams are in heavily Hispanic markets, and, as noted, C-USA is very strong in baseball and soccer. This could be a great way to bring in additional revenue and cultivate fans for baseball and soccer, and maybe they will decide to watch football and basketball while they are at it.

  15. $1.4 billion endowment: How's that worked out for you the past 20 or so years? Tier One Ranking: I may be mistaken, but I think only UT, A&M and Rice are Tier One Univeristies. Big East: good luck with that. The Big East has multiple issues and you don't have an opponent, outside of UH, in the immediate vicinity. 12,000 at football games will continue and BB will get hammered in the Big East. Presidential Library: Be happy Bush decided to "retire" to Dallas. June Jones: hope he's not too busy with his inner-city ministry (still looking for that one, btw), trying to entice a bigger school or not being truthful to recruits. Larry Brown: is their a Luby's close to campus? If history repeats itself, you all will be on probation in 3 or 4 years with a former North Texas coach leading the way. Sorry, but I wish nothing but failure upon SMU. By the way, I grew up in the Methodist Church and am embarrassed that your school is affiliated with the church.

  21. I think this is similar to how the BIG 12 kicked Beebe to the curb. It didn't spell the end for the Big 12 and it won't for the Big East either. They both screwed up and let their conferences get picked apart. He turned down that Big tv deal from ESPN and there is no telling if they will be able to match it.

  22. We don't drink, nor smoke, Norfolk. First, it's pronounced "Naw-fuk". Tidewater natives talk funny and I first time I went to Denton, I needed an interpreter to make myself understood. I've enjoyed this thread. Being a Norfolk native, I will attempt to clear up some of the misconceptions. Someone said that 90% of the population were transients and that ODU does not receive support. This is news to me. My family first came to Norfolk in 1628 on the ship Lyon from England (as indentured servants) and has been there ever since. Thankfully, we are not servants anymore. There certainly are transients just as you would expect from an area that has the highest number of military bases than anywhere in the country but with a metro population of 1.7 million, there are many permanent residents as as well. You can look at ODU's attendance figures and see that their sports are well attended. Heck, women's basketball at ODU has similar attendance figures to our men's program. Someone else said that ODU did not have any skins on the wall. They won their conference after three years of playing football. For what it is worth, Sagrin often rated the CAA higher than the Sun Belt. ODU also made it to the second round of the IAA playoffs, something North Texas never did in all our years in football purgatory. Virginia is a fairly large state but only has two FBS schools, Va Tech and UVa. The Tidewater high schools play excellent football and it is a great place to recruit. the ACC has had it to their self for years. That can change now. In other sports, I suspect they have more national championships than any other CUSA school. Their athletic budget is higher than almost anyone in CUSA even without playing FCS football. They are serious about athletics. Let me close by saying it is a great place to visit. Within 45 minutes, you have Va Beach (and the Atlantic ocean), Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown, and many other historic sites. Shoot, you are all invited to my home on the Chesapeake Bay and we will have some steamed blue crabs and beer, eaten on newspaper; preferably the Virginian Pilot.

  24. Whataburger is a great burger and I just was introduced to In and Out. In and Out is tasty, fast, and cheap. Its a good burger. Sonic?! I was recently told to try Twisted Root. Any word on that place? The Hickory Burger at the Denton Hamburger Company is the bomb. The fries are soggy but I like crispy. Some of y'all are talking about various places to go in EP. Cattlemans Steakhouse is really good and if you are taking kids it's worth the trip out to Fabens. They have a zoo and old movie sets on the Ranch. La Posta in Old Mesilla is great plus it's a cool area outside Las Cruces. The Rivera on the Westside is still my favorite Mexican joint though. Cool bar too. Still anti Chico's.

  30. Benford may think Coleman would be a better fit. Odoh doesn't seem like the mix it up , physical type we need down low. We have Roger , but the guy is no taller than 6'5. We don't need a big to score , we just need a big to be physical & have a presence in the paint. We also need someone to help protect TM. Tony will have a target on his back. I can see teams coming after him with hard fouls & possible cheap shots. I think someone like Coleman on the floor could make someone second guess those thoughts. Guy looks pretty rough !!

  36. UNTexas, UTEP has plenty of solid programs, just like UNT. Stop acting as if UNT is some paragon in state school academics. As someone who has been on both campuses multiple times, the vibe from the people at each university (and their respective cities, i.e. Denton) is incredibly similar. I understand that UTEP fans are acting like they're the Longhorns of the Big XII in CUSA, but they've got seniority and have gone to bowl games and NCAA tournaments in the last decade. That's usually enough to be prideful in. They also talk the way they do because they know UNT and UTSA pose a threat to them.

  40. The MWC commissioner Craig Thompson said Friday was the first phase. Now the two leagues will work on television deals and scheduling. It appears that some negotiations on television deals have been on going, http://www.abqjournal.com/sports/2012/03/28/mwc-cusa-alliance-faces-many-hurdles.html MWC, C-USA Alliance Faces Many Hurdles By Rick Wright / Journal Staff Writer on Mar. 28, 2012 Potholes Surface For MWC, C-USA What’s the price tag for stability? That, University of New Mexico President David Schmidly says, is the fundamental question facing the Mountain West Conference and Conference USA as they determine how to shape their future relationship. The two leagues, in the wake of predations from their memberships by other conferences, have been working to unite in forming a bigger, stronger, more stable entity that would begin play in the fall 2013. But the two conferences’ initial plans to dissolve and form a new league has hit some financial potholes, as reported in the past few days by CBSsports.com and by the San Jose Mercury. A merger — folding one league into the other, rather than dissolving both — also has drawbacks. A third alternative is a less formal alliance. Both conferences would keep their identities but meet in postseason play and work together in negotiating TV contracts. All three, Schmidly said Tuesday in an interview with the Journal, are still in play. But he said that until more is known about the value of the new conference/alliance in the TV market, and until it’s known whether increased TV revenue can offset financial losses elsewhere, the right path can’t be determined. “We have to know that whole (TV) package,” Schmidly said, “before we can make a final call.” When news of an all-sports alliance between the Mountain West and C-USA first surfaced in January — the two leagues had announced a football-only alliance last fall — it was reported that each conference would have to be dissolved. Because of each league’s existing TV contracts, a merger was deemed too complicated. In the past few days, though, the Mercury and CBSsports.com reported that dissolution would cause both leagues to lose huge amounts of money in the form of shares from NCAA basketball tournament revenue. Each league, as well, would forfeit healthy exit fees from departing members such as Boise State and San Diego State from the MWC, and Memphis and Central Florida from C-USA — all four headed for the Big East. Also, Schmidly noted, “If we were to dissolve totally and form a new conference, brand new, then we would lose votes at the NCAA level and at the (Bowl Championship Series) level.” A merger — one league absorbing the other — might moderate but would not solve those problems. If Conference USA were to be folded into the Mountain West, C-USA could not collect NCAA Tournament money or exit fees. The reverse is also true. An alliance, each conference retaining its identity, would solve those two problems but probably would not generate as much TV revenue. Schmidly announced last April that he will retire when his contract expires this June. But he’s heavily involved in the Mountain West-Conference USA discussions and is a member of that initiative’s TV committee. Negotiations with CBS, Schmidly said, are the linchpin. Both leagues have TV contracts in place with that network. “They’re the first domino that has to be resolved,” he said. “There’s still some separation between where we believe we ought to be and where CBS wants to be, so we’re continuing those negotiations.” Once a deal with CBS is reached, Schmidly said, other networks can be approached. There should be plenty of games to televise. The Mountain West will have eight schools for football, seven for other sports, in 2013-14. Conference USA will have eight for all sports. And there’s talk of expanding to 20 schools, or even 24. There is, of course, another option: Walking away as if these discussions never began. Schmidly said he sees that possibility as neither likely nor desirable. “We’ve all suffered by having (conference members) leaving us,” he said. “We would now have 16 members. We could expand to 20 or 24, so that’s a nice, stable environment. “I’m still excited about it. I feel like we’ve got to do something to bring some stability to college athletics.” — This article appeared on page D1 of the Albuquerque Journal

  43. North Texas just needs to act like we're the only game in town (the DFW Metroplex) and just let nature takes its course; not worrry ever again about what they're doing at either TCU or SMU. Has it ever helped us before? We never need to schedule down again. We will have all the regional schools coming to Apogee Stadium that we need with C-USA (and maybe even the possible Alliance/ MWC) games. If TCU taught us anything it was to stay exclusive without getting bogged down with too many other schools from the Lone Star State. I think that worked out quite well for TCU. Just sayin'... GMG! PS: Lordy, I just watched "We Are Marshall" (again) on TNT and still all choked up. Man oh man...

  45. I'm not saying we are the greatest and you can check your smug state school comment at the door. Nobody but you people give a damn about state school versus private. As an El Pasoan I can tell you this crap they are posting is how a lot of them really think. Most of that place thinks the world ends at Loop 375. My best friend is a former professor there. The stories are amazing. If you think their almost 100 percent acceptance rate is kosher then stop reading now. For the most part I agree with your post but I can tell you from many years out there that the town and much of what use to be a fine University has become a punchline. It didn't use to be though. Pretty sad. Half my family went to school there as well. They are really pissed about the state of affairs at that school. I don't blame them either. If UNT were in their shoes, I would be fighting mad. I have a lot of UTEP friends that feel the same. If it was the Chico's Taco comment that you didn't like. Sorry, I stand by it. Either way no one here wants to hear a lecture from a douche from SMU that starts off with your nonsense. You probably don't even get why.
