  2. So it covers LESS of the Metro area, has technical issues form time to time ... and this is good?

  3. Fran's situation of being from Dallas and being out of coaching for awhile reminds me of Bill Blakeley's history. Coach Blakeley had been out of coaching (Dallas Chaparrals), lived in Dallas, and knew the key DFW high school players. I think that he commuted to Denton after taking the job (not sure about this). The only issue with Fran commuting would be that he would be late for all the games due to I35 being backed-up due to traffic. Fran sounds like the coach we need.

  4. Observations after watching my first college conference tennis tournament: 1. College tennis is nothing like professional tennis--lots of yelling, coaching, movement of fans, and fun 2. No subbing for injury or bad day on the court--you start, you finish--not like other team sports 3. It is tense trying to keep track of singles on 6 courts at the same time to see if your are leading or behind in the team scoring 4. Clutch play coming from behind by Valentina Starkova on Saturday to keep us in the tournament 5. Clutch play coming from behind by Irina Paraschiv today to close out the championship today for the Mean Green 6. Congratulations to Paula Dinuta for being nameed the MVP of the tournament--if I remember correctly she won all her doubles and singles matches---very steady to keep us up in each match 7. Felt good to have 3 seniors on the court in the final three matches today--felt like they could battle in the matches to the end--as they needed to 8. The doubles point is very important and we seem to be the masters of starting off with a point from the doubles round 9. FIU had been to the finals the last 8 years--they beat us in the semis last year and we beat them in the finals for the championship in 2010---has become a big rivalry 10. It helps to have former basketball great Kenneth Lyons behind your court leading the cheers and motivating you--come back anytime Kenneth! 11. Coach Lama and Coach Maren have done as great job with these girls, as has Coach Troy--I believe our fitness wins several of those third set matches There were lots of fans in green out this week rooting for the girls and the home court advantage certainly came into play at critical times. If you ever get a chance, come out to the matches. You will be surprised at how much you will enjoy it. So, congratulations Kseniya (Fr), Paula (Sr), Nadia (Sr), Irina (Sr), Illona (Jr), Franziska (Fr), Valentina (Jr) and Barbora (Jr). All of you played a big part in the team victory, so......... 6. Meh. I can't point to any one aspect as to why, but I've become so turned off by the NFL that I have no interest in it whatsoever, never watch it, and could not care less if the Vikings stay in Minnesota, move to Los Angeles, or play in a municipal park in Taos, New Mexico. I'm still not paying $200 for a nosebleed ticket acquired via stubhub, $100 for a pizza, and signing a second mortgage for a beer.

  12. I don't know, those Mayans are looking awfully accurate right now. I mean, 100 year anniversary of the Titanic, the departure of JJ on Friday the 13th, and no Dick Clark to ring in the new year, I think this may be it. But you did do an awesome job for the basketball game and GMG Bowl, as always! I don't think the Mayans could put together a better event with their sacrificed skulls.

  22. If we really want to be able to land recruits from the metro area like we say we do, him living in Dallas might not be such a bad thing...

  23. As for the commuting thing for Fran, I really don't care if he moves to Denton or not. The demands of the job are now year round so there is not time for all the community stuff like the old days. So as long as the new coach comes here and wins, I could care less that he has his name on a road sign saying that he keeps a stretch of said road clean.

  24. The AAU coaches know who he is and let's face it that is who is making decisions about where these kids are going to school.

  25. All the names mentioned we've heard before and they are all either assistants or former coaches. We shouldn't hear about any current head coaches interviewing unless they are close to hiring that person. Current head coaches rather not have it known they are looking around. I don't recall hearing about Petersen under a couple of days before he was hired. However, of the names mentioned I think Fran would interest me the most.

  30. What he should of said is SMU won the press conference. And that's about all. I like the Johnson hire far more than the Brown/Jankovic hire. I don't think either are slam dunks, but Johnson makes far more sense than the panic hire at SMU. I think the best hire in metroplex college basketball may be made sometime next week (hopefully). For a little counter balance read this.

  31. I was there for a couple of quarters. Chaz sampson made a nice grab down the sideline for a big gain. In the third quarter Osborn was struggling. I could not tell how they had the teams split up, so not sure if he was facing 1st or 2nd team D. Cooper jones had a catch at tight end. I noticed no one threw the ball marcus trices way while i was there as well. On a side note, I saw Jarmarcus Jarvis in the concession line and he looks the part.

  32. First...my sincere thanks to ALL who played, participated in our silent auction (whether you became a winning bidder or not...you helped a great deal), who sponsored the event, who donated additional funds "just because", who provided some FANTASTIC BRISKET for the after event tailgate, and who volunteered to work the chains, down marker and referee. And, thanks to the fans who came out to watch and cheer your "heroes" on. It was a great day...and you...each and every one of you made it so. Final score was Green Team 18 - White Team 6, but it was much closer than that for the majority of the game...a score in "extra time" added to the green team's margin of victory. The good news is that we got out of the deal with only one injury that I am aware of...I think Hut sprained an ankle that might be a tad sore Sunday morning, but I saw him "up and about" at the spring game...so, I am keeping my fingers crossed for a speedy recovery! OK, I still have some auction items to collect for, but when all is said and done...and after all expenses are deducted, your generosity has resulted in what appears to be a $3,000.00 donation the Andrew Smith memorial Scholarship Fund! Folks, that is the highest total in the nine year history of the event! Couldn't happen with you...each and every one of you! Give yourselves a well deserved pat on the back for a job well done! I hope everyone enjoyed themselves, and will come back for next year's game...I am going to hope to make it even bigger and better...with your help! NEXT YEAR'S GAME LOOKS TO BE SET FOR APRIL 13, 2013! Mark your calendars now and spread the word! We will, of course, confirm that date later, but I am told, at this point, that's the date for next year! So, mark it down, and we'll see everyone again on April 13th next season. If you have any comments, thoughts or suggestions regarding the event and how we might can make it even better, please...please PM me....I welcome your comments...positive or negative (but be nice!...Ha!)...and your suggestions. The event gets better because people care....so, let me know. And let me know if you would like to help plan and stage the event next year...help is always welcome. Again, thanks to one and all...WELL DONE! WELL DONE! It's makes me proud to be a member of the great Mean green Nation when I get to be around so many great and generous people. THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

  33. drex...thanks for the kind words...BUT..."I" did not raise that money...a bunch of folks...yourself included...pitched in to make these events a success, and each and every ones deserves as much or more of the credit than I ever will. It's great to see the amounts being raised grow each year...you know that $5,500+ will really help our student-athletes. That's what makes this so great...and so much fun. Hopefully, we can continue this trend. Again...there are not enough words that I can think of to thank every single person who had a hand in both these events. I'm pretty excited about where we can take both these events. I do think it's getting to be time when I need some additional administrative type help to keep these going. So, if anyone would like to volunteer to help stage these events with me next year...please just send me a PM. GREAT TIMES with very generous folks...you know...even Rick V and C Dan Smith stopped by the silent auction table to make some bids...some generous bids I might say as well. That was great to see...but it's the sort of support I have come to see each and every time we do something like this from these folks.

  34. It'd probably sound a lot like "This guy hasn't signed yet." We all know how well that goes over under the recruiting forum..."Whole lotta nothing" as someone said. Then someone pisses on Brett for not reporting something solid. So basically, the DRC can't win.

  36. Kudos to the legislature for standing firm. I am opposed to taxpayer-funded stadiums for professional sports teams. It used to be the owner that put the pressure on the taxpayers, now it's the league.

  42. LSU can kiss my .... I hate their attitude of thinking because they are LSU we will just do what they want. We whipped them in Baton Rouge two years ago and would do it again this year. We will have a higher ranked team next year, so they can forget about any special arrangements. I like JJ, but I could care less if they win a game next year.

  43. I don't have a strong feel for this guy one way or another. Not even sure he is even interested in this job. What intrigues me though is his knowledge and connections with foreign players and coaches around the world. NBA general managers and scouts, stationed overseas, consult with him about draft prospects throughout the year. After each selection of a foreign player in the NBA draft, the broadcasters kick it over to Fran for his expert analysis on the player. What a huge benefit that would mean to any mid major program. The main reason North Texas is nowhere near a top 25 program (closer to 75) is the lack of quality height. (And depth) Since we aren't in a position to attract the talented 6-11 - 7 footers out of high school, bringing over a developing foreign guy is quite appealing to me. Let's be real, most AAU coaches are trouble! These guys are about benefiting individually rather than truly helping the kid and/or school. We don’t want to build a program by working exclusively with the AAU circuit.I’m somewhat relieved that RV has moved on from Shawn Forrest and not felt pressure rush into a decision. We should not be looking for any quick fixes and band aids. I want a sustainable winning program with gradual year over year improvement. (Instead of shooting for 1 great year) I'm not in favor of any more Karen Aston type hires either. I think the Jeff Capel, Reggie Theus hires would be just that. Our goal should be to hire a good coach who will fulfill his initial 5-year contract and at a minimum 1 earned/deserved extension. This program, in a new league, in this market, will be just fine.

  45. I thought Brown was perfect for SMU. Nobody in their right mind would go there and commit career suicide for that situation. They will struggle no matter who is at the helm in the big east. Phil Jackson, coach K , hologram John wooden , nobody will be winning a big east crown anytime soon in Dallas. They have some nice talent , but not big east talent. They needed someone to get them going in the right direction. Someone who knows what they are doing. Someone who is confident , someone the players & fans can trust. The last thing they needed was fans getting upset with the losing that is to come and players losing confidence in a coach. I don't see fans losing faith or players transferring out because they think Brown doesn't know what he's doing. SMU hires anyone else and they just start this whole process all over again in a few years. This hire wasn't made for winning right now. Hire was made for 3,4 years down the line. Made for gettting thru the transition process. A lot of people have critized this hire, but I like it. He's not going to win 20+ games. That's not what he's there for. He will surround himself with guys who can get the job done on the AAU circuit. He knows what he's doing. guy is a legend. A hall of famer.

  46. yyz28 As for the "hypocrisy" here - there is a good reason for their handling of these situations differently. Social security fraud is a problem for which the government has found a solution, but voter fraud is not a problem. According to the Republican National Lawyer's Association, there has been only 1 prosecution for vote fraud in Texas worth mentioning since 2004 - and even then it was a violation which an ID would not have stopped. Of course it shouldn't be a shock that there's hypocrisy in politics. What is a shock is that people blame anyone but themselves. Our politicians are hypocritical because we've asked them to be. An example: ...from the left: The voters want a President who will not "bail out" corporations, but make exceptions form GM or green energy companies. ...from the right: The voters want a president who wants to keep government from interfering in religion, contracts or personal rights, but make exceptions for gay marriage or marijuana. In short, don't complain about hypocritical politicians - we asked for them.

  48. Anyone else notice that the Athletic Department's Ad in the Denton Record Chronicle that lists spring game day activities had the GMG.Com flag football game at 10:00AM listed as one of the day's events????? Way cool. That's really great, and is some nice PR for the event.....the support we are getting from the athletic department for our FB and BB events is simply OUTSTANDING! And...it is VERY much appreciated! EDIT: You are kidding me! I'd sure like to know who the "grumpy old man" or person was that could -1 the above comment. Some folks really do need to get a life...sad state of affairs here...obviously the person who did it does not have the "you know what's" to identify himself. Amazing...simply amazing.
