  1. First off, let me say I am really torn about bringing these stories back. On one hand it's really fun for me, and a bit cathartic, to provide a glimpse into what I get to go through eight hours a day. On the other hand this little foray into storytelling is only back because I had to give up a three year love affair with working undercover...alas, them's the breaks of promoting. I really hope that these stories are an enjoyable read and provide a little perspective for the next time you watch one of my least favorite TV shows (CSI, Southland, Rookie Blue, etc). I just think someone should offer the other side of the "reality" cop show coin. And let me also take the time to throw something out there. I DON'T CARE WHAT YOUR OPINION OF DRUG LAWS, TRAFFIC LAWS, THE COURT SYSTEM OR ANYTHING ELSE POLICE RELATED IS. THIS ISN'T A FORUM TO AIR YOUR OPINIONS OF JUSTICE. IF IT DETERIORATES TO THAT THEN I'LL JUST STOP SHARING. So, without further adieu I bring you (back) The Police Files. Three years and four months ago when I was selected to be a narcotics detective I was about as excited as I have ever been professionally. I've always been of the opinion that most real crime starts, ends or can be linked to drugs in some way. So, I walked into the narcotics division office with a smile on my face and pep in my step........and a boatload of naivety! I learned DAY ONE that watching Boyz in the Hood or listening to hip hop does not make you ready to buy dope in Dallas. Apparently a college educated guy from the mean streets of Denton, Texas doesn't walk, talk, dress or act like the people who live in "the hood". My training detective (who I came to be good friends with) had his work cut out for him. The first day in the field we went to do my "confidence buy". A confidence buy is basically the simplest, safest dope deal you can find just to prove that someone is capable of buying dope. My trainer drove up to a guy standing in the street, asked him for a twenty sack of green, looked at me until I got the clue to hand the guy twenty bucks, and drove off. Confidence buy over. I had close to zero interaction during this deal and it lasted ten whole seconds...yet it sticks out in my mind to this day because the act of buying drugs was just that new to me. I spent the rest of the day typing a bunch of paperwork I would come to be able to do in my sleep. The next day in the field it was announced to me that I was going to learn how to type a search warrant. "No problem" I figured. I've always been good at paperwork and I'm pretty computer savvy. This, of course, is when I learned that typing this search warrant would require me to actually walk up to said house and buy dope from there. I was excited!!! We drove to a section of Oak Cliff I had never seen before, found the house that a citizen had complained about for selling marijuana, and pulled into the driveway. And this is when the excitement gave way to that feeling you get when you're on the roller coaster and it has just reached the top of that first drop..."Oh shit, there's no turning back and I'm really doing this." So I got out of the car and started to walk toward the front door. My trainer honked the horn to get my attention and then pointed toward the back. The back door? But I can't see back there. And I'll be all alone. Yep, I was about to earn that Detective badge. This wasn't buying weed just off of Fry street. So I walked to the back to knock on the door. And the door had a cage around the back porch. Now I don't know if you've ever been in a shark cage, so if you haven't let me explain. You open an iron door and step into a metal box. The whole thing is lag bolted into the conrete porch you're standing on and into the house itself. Somehow, and I don't know how, the door (as it did on this day) inevitably finds a way to use momentum to close itself behind you. And that door you just walked through was left unlocked for a reason. It's so that buyers can easily get themselves in...but not out. You see, once you knock on the actual back door the guy behind it will instruct you to close that rear cage door, effectively locking you in until the transaction is completed. So there I stood, locked inside this cage, and speaking to a guy whose first words were "who are you?". Who are you is a simple enough question...unless you're stuttering. Somehow the sentence "Man, they just told me I could come here to get some green...I need a couple dubs" takes about a minute to say when you're scared. Luckily the question of "Who is 'they'?" wasn't asked cuz I would've looked like this... I got my forty dollars worth of weed and walk/ran back to the car after I was allowed to exit. I typed up that warrant and we hit the house. We got a couple ounces of weed...one arrest...and two guns. My first ever warrant was served. Now since then I've placed numerous people in both federal and state prison for after investigations of varying lengths...and I'll talk about them as we go...but much like another imporant milestone in your life, "You never forget your first time."

  4. We have some great players, don't get me wrong, but the University of North Texas is bigger than them. We cannot let the fear of damaging the fragile psyches of a few players force us into a quick hire of a coach we don't want for the long haul.

  5. If you had a conversation with a player via twitter, facebook, or heck even in a store why would you run on here and post what was said b/w you and him? Like Tom Jackson says, "come on man."

  6. Brett, I just haven't seen all these miracles from JJ that you and many others continue to talk about. I didn’t want JJ to leave either but the man had been with us for 11 years. During this time, we never won a conference championship. Most years, we were slightly over 500 within the Sunbelt. Thanks to cream puff non-conferences scheduling, 20-win seasons were very attainable. (In all fairness, all schools do the same) JJ went to just 1 more NCAA tournament than Jimmy Gales, while we were in the Southland Conference but in half the time. I’m appreciative to JJ and the staff, for the accomplishments we managed. Life, however, does go on and North Texas basketball will be just fine; if not better. Top area recruits will always look at North Texas because it represents a chance to play early and excel. It is also very close to home and family. JJ didn’t create this; he just tried to sale it. Presently, we are a serious candidate for CUSA not because of any one coach but because of the Dallas market and our continuous growth. Timing is everything, JJ happened to be around when our Athletic department/Director made a greater commitment to its major sports and coaches. In hindsight, JJ really didn't have much success recruiting the better local kids until recently. His success was in landing transfers from the area seeking more playing in front of friends and family. (UTA actually had just as much success in this area) Yea, we had some lean years before JJ got here but having an AD that had patience gets my game ball. In fact, when rumors start to circulate that RV is interviewing other place is when I’ll get worried. 8. I think we learned that RV has better contacts than what we can come up with. Remember 2 weeks ago when everyone was on the Matt Daniel bandwaggon to be the next ladies coach? Yeah, I like our actual hire a little better. If Kaspar has not been contacted, he probably wont be. I'd rather have Fraschilla, and I think Fran is to UNT what Johnny was to LSU: The guy we know we can get, but lets kick the tires on some of these other guys... like say, a Duke Asst. coach with recruiting inroads in DFW?

  10. The biggest issue is the reliance on the bodybag game(s) to fund the athletic department. Id love to never play one of those games again, but I recognize that games against SBC/WAC/CUSA teams won't pay the bills alone. That's why I believe completely in playing a bodybag game that actually gives you a chance to avoid embarrassment. Don't play top southern teams in the SEC, Big XII, or ACC. Play the money game later in the year, if at all possible. If not, play Big Ten teams or Pac-12 teams at the beginning of the year. Doing that would be light years better than what we have done and will continue to do for the years to come...

  13. Bleacher Report is essentially a blog. The 'contributors' are just like you and I. They are sports fans that want to write. Any one of us could write for the Bleacher Report. It is 99.9999% volunteer and there only a few paid or professional writers. I don't even think they will allow a professional writer that was not a free contributor because that is their niche. Students can use this website to practice, get feedback, and build a resume. Or a sports fan that wants to sway opinion can post an article. Every time I see this site quoted as a 'source' it just makes me giggle. Its been a fantastic marketing tool and is modeled after financial websites like Motley Fool. I would love to see Harry's stuff on there because he is an excellent (and balanced) writer. There is a guy with the pen name "Toby Writes" that either went to NT or some Sun Belt school. He is also a pretty balanced writer. Just keep in mind that these writers are doing the articles on a volunteer basis. There are no editors (they use peer editing) and its really just a well packaged message board. What do you say Plumm? How about an article from you? Source: “It’s a meritocracy,” Grey says. (Lewis and I spoke with him separately.) About 1 percent of B/R’s 7,000 contributors receive stipends ranging from “a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars per month.” The effect is to reward those who deserve it — the site’s best writers and top traffic-getters — while giving everyone else something to reach for. Grey calls it “the gamification of the contributor base.” Not that getting paid is the only incentive. For many contributors who are also fans, “to be seen as an authority on their team is a motivating factor,” he says.

  21. I agree to the point that the NCAA needs to look at the rule. As a kid, if the coach who recruited you - and your parents, and your high school coach, etc. - decides to jump to another job or is fired, you are stuck in a different situation than you were led to believe would be in place. And, it's not just the head coach. If you've been recruited by a certain assistant and he leaves, or you have a position coach and he leaves, you're in a different situation than before. Then, you add on top of that the fact that the scholarships are year-to-year and not four-year, and you've got that on your mind as well. Basically, the kids have a four or five year window, whereas the coaches have a career. If coaches can move about as freely as they do, and schools can fire them, etc., these student athletes should be able to do so as well. And, personally, I don't think the kids should have to sit for a year. A coach doesn't have to sit out a year if he decides to take a job with another school. Think about this. The reason you hire a new coach is that you want to make your program more competitive. Okay, fine. But, you've got these coaches and athletic departments saying to the kids, "We'll let you go, but not to these schools because we don't want them to be more competitive." That's hypocritical. They don't do the same thing to coaches. If they are going to have year-to-year scholarships, they should let kids move about as freely as the coaches move. There is no repercussion in participation to a coach for him leaving, the kids should have the same freedom.

  25. Will Trilli was a special case. In my opinion NT hit an altime low with Trilli. He took over a bad Jank team who played their hearts out for him the first year and then Trilli just kept I think two players from that team and about 7 players were told to search for a new home. Never, understood why he chose to that and I if you believe in karma; Trilli reaps what he deserved. Trilli bought in some excellent players his first year, but most were no better than those he ran off. So, you are correct in that it was a big change in coach style of play but there was so much wrong with Tirlli it was a minor factor in the Trilli' disaster. You are also correct in the Dodge for Dickey change, but it actually worked well. Dickey left a very bad offensive team.and Dodge improved that side of the ball play. Dodge also inherited a good at least by Belt standards defensive team, that he destroyed.

  28. Quote Shawn Forrest confirmed late Thursday night that he is leaving UNT to join the staff at LSU under Johnny Jones. Another source said that Charlie Leonard has also packed up his office at the Super Pit and is headed to Baton Rouge. Leonard was Jones' right-hand man while he built UNT up from the ashes. Forrest is Jones ace recruiter and the man who opened the pipeline to Dallas-Fort Worth for the Mean Green. With Forrest out of the picture, it looks like UNT will follow the same path it has taken with its last few coaching searches and hire a coach who has been in charge before. 29. Or the fact that our all time record in nearly 100 years of basketball is over 100 games under .500 --- we just have never had a sustained run of success. The longest run of non losing seasons we've ever had is our current run of seven in a row. Before that, I believe our record was four. So basically, we have only had a handful of graduating classes that have gone through their entire career without having at least one losing record.

  34. IT'S HERE! GAME DAY SATURDAY and weather looks to be great! here is some game day info for players and spectators alike.... APOGEE ENTRY: For all players and spectators - GATE 4 (East/Student side)...enter and exit will be through Gate 4...enter through Gate 4 and make your way down the seats to the field. We will play from the student side. Gate is to be open at 9AM...please arrive in time to register, get your playing shirt, review the rules grab a flag belt, and to have some warm-up time. PARKING: Parking for players and spectators for our game will be in the East Victory Lot...Red/Blue Lots....unless you have a parking pass (club and suite ticket holders) and you can choose to park either in the red/blue lot or your designated lot for the game. AFTER EVENT TAIL GATE: Once again this year, Dale Hiatt has agreed to provide some wonderful brisket sandwiches to the hungry after the game. Dale will be setting up a tailgate area for us to use after the game and to enjoy his great brisket. I am not exaggerating here folks...if you have tasted Dale's handiwork with a brisket in the past you KNOW exactly what I am talking about...GREATNESS! The brisket will be donated by Dale and will be free of charge to our participants as long as it lasts....for those so willing, we will accept scholarship donations for the brisket, but donations are in no way required. Bring your own beverages to the after event tailgate...and, yes, BERR will be allowed...and some might say encouraged. We'll announce the location of the after event tailgate at the game Saturday once Dale and crew have determined its exact location. PLEASE...if you are playing or planning to attend, pass this information along to anyone you know playing/attending as GATE 4 will be the only entry point Saturday morning for our game. I would hate for any spectator or player/family to be wondering around trying to figure out how to get into the stadium and miss kick-off or the game entirely. SILENT AUCTION: Once again we will hold a silent auction in conjunction with the game to raise additional scholarship funds. We will have some great UNT and non-UNT related items available for your bidding. The auction will be set up on the sidelines during the game, but will be moved to the concourse area of Apogee (probably on the home side near the garage sale or main home side gate) once our game is over. Bidding will remain open until the end of half-time of the spring game. Bids will close at that time and winners are welcome to come pick up and pay for their items. 37. It is not an irrational fear. It would really suck if some of the key players left, but it is what it is. We will find success one way or another.

  44. STOP IT WITH THE G.D.'d TWITTER UPDATES!!! You know what's worse than a bunch of 19 year-olds putting vague and cryptic messages out there? A bunch of stupid, old, white men trying to decipher them and then posting their "expert" conclusions on an internet message board...a message board already rife with angst.

  45. Dont feel bad...im a bandwagon rangers fan...even wearing a rangers shirt right now during the game. Im terribly pissed off at the red soxs ownership for the way they trashed francona as he left town and really almost dont care about the team right now...which is about impossible for me.
