  3. You can quote this source as saying that TS and SA are uselessly siphoning valuable state resources and along with TT should be rolled into the UNT System and athletics discontinued at those subsidiary campuses.

  8. This has to be one of the biggest coaching hires in the history of north texas....when have we EVER pulled a head coach, from a power 6 conference, with a + .500 winning precentage and coming off a 20 win season in any sport? i sure as heck cant remember that.... totally awesome hire.

  9. As promised, I wanted to let everyone know the net total of funds raised for the UNT Cheer Squad from our recent GMG.Com Basketball game....drum roll please............ The net (after all expenses) is..... $ 2,653.00 !!!! This represents a very nice increase from what we were able to accomplish last year. My sincere thanks to every one who helped to make this event a success...from the great folks who were so helpful within the UNT Athletic Dept., to the Cheer Coach and Squad, to those who sponsored the event and bought ad space in the game day program, to those who donated silent auction items and concession items, to those who worked the event, to those who donated to the event, to those who came to watch the game and most of all to those who signed up and played in the game! We had a great time, and the results show that we all made it a good day for the UNT Cheer Squad. These funds will go a long way in staring a scholarship fund for the cheer squad...it happened because of some very unselfish people who gave of their time, their talent and the treasure to help support the game. It is always great to see the generous spirit of so many fans of the great Mean Green. You know who you are and you know that you are making a very positive difference. Thanks so much...planning is already underway for next year's event...which I hope will be even better and bigger. You folks are GREAT!

  12. This is a big statement having an ACC coach leave his team to come to NT. Look out for us next year, GMG

  13. Good Freaking ... the moaning starts. Its like some of you sit back and wait for something to be done/said so you can give us your "expert" opinion on where RV went wrong. UNT just hired the HC from an ACC school and you cannot find anything but the negative

  15. "North Texas would be crazy to not hire Shawn Forrest. He has DFW on lock and would likely keep Mitchell. What other choice do they have?" Kinda insulting, really.

  16. I had a smile on my face the entire time I watched. I'm proud of him. I won't go through this until 17 years from now, but I imagine this feeling will be similar to watching my daughter graduate (and then enroll at UNT of course). She'll be mine for 18 years, then I've gotta let her go pursue her own dreams. Ahem. Uh... Paper Tiger for sure. Good riddance.

  17. Tony, We here at GoMeanGreen.com have really given it alot of thought, and I know it sounds crazy because we've only known each other for just over a year, but we think you might be THE ONE. Please, don't be alarmed. We just had to tell you. We just couldn't keep it inside any longer... We Love You. Tony Mitchell, will you marry us?

  19. To me, if UTSA moves up to the Alliance, this is just more proof at how lacksadaisical our leadership was at North Texas for the better part of forever. Basically, we match every advantage that UTSA offers--location and academics, and then trump them with history and on-campus facilites. But, because our leadership looked at athletics so lowly for so long, they gave schools like UTSA the blueprint on how not to run an athletic program. UTSA basically decided that they were going to play football, so they hired a named coach with skins on the wall, figured out to involve local business and local citizenry into the program, and then went out and got their games on a TV outlet (the LHN) that may not be well-known, but it helped the golden goose of the state to boost their fledgling network, which will probably pay great dividends to UTSA down the road with funding and scheduling from their friends in Austin. Literally, even when we look at the move from 1-aa to 1-a back in 1995 and then examine our total stretch of being a present-day FBS program, this is what we did: 1.) Add 10000 aluminum seats that were approximately a mile and a half aways from the field to get over 30000. 2.)Schedule every body bag game opponent possible to fund the ENTIRE athletic department without really trying to tap into the local community for direction or support with any success. 3.) Hire no-name HFCs with absolutely no skins on the wall, who either quickly or eventually fell on their faces. 4.) Join a league with absolutely no one in-state to build a rivalry (create interest) with or play conference games against anyone that people have heard of or care about. If UTSA manages to get into the Alliance, it will be because they did everything right in selling their program to others, while we literally made the wrong choice on every single move involving our football program from 1978 until we finally got our stadium funding approved and then finally hired a coach who had accomplished something before he got here. From Fry to McCarney, from Fouts to Apogee, and from 1-a to 1-aa to 1-a, we created our own situation. UTSA, has been fortunate enough not to make poor decisions, so far. Give them credit for using their davantages to their benefit and making choices that appeal to others (conferences, networks, fans, recruits, etc...). Their leap forward, while amazingly irritating to most of us, is a testament to how an athletic department should be run. Its why they won't have to "pay their dues" for 50 years, unlike another Texas school that we are all very familar with.

  23. I'm sure he's pushing Forrest for the job. We just don't know if RV is listening. If Forrest was offered the job then they probably want to wait a few days so the women's hire can have his time in the spot light.

  26. Just wears you out with these folks, doesn't it. Always the same from always the same crowd...looks like a very nice hire...out of the ACC, lots of experience, etc., etc. Welcome Coach...let's keep it moving forward. Welcome to the great Mean green nation....please pay the negative folks no mind as they try to wear you out as well........the vast majority of the Mean green nation are very happy to have you on the team!

  27. The ACC is a strong basketball conference, is it not? We just hired a HEAD COACH, not an ASSISSTANT, from a strong basketball conference, did we not? And people are complaining because.........?

  29. I would like the new coach to add at least one area high school and/or Houston area coach to the staff. Legendary NT coach Bill Blakely realized this with the creation of a position for then Dallas South Oak Cliff coach Jimmy Gales. Coach Gales was very instrumental in bringing Charles McMillan, Waymon Lister, Kevie Gulley, Ronnie Morgan, Norvel Miles & Deon Hunter to campus. (Some as HC) Hall of Fame C/F Ken Williams joined the fold a year earlier. Arguably, the best recruiters in the state of Texas for high school talent to their respective school, has to be Royce Johnson of Dallas Kimball and Greg Wise of Houston Yates. When a kid tells Snoop (Royce) "but coach I live in the Cedar Hill district" Royce will probably tell the kid no problem and pick them up and take them home. (Any truth to this Mr. Odufawa?) Year after year when opposing teams have to rebuild, Kimball & Yates reload with an influx of talent that would make a mid-high major D1 college proud. Another possibility are area AAU coaches, headlined by Jazzy Hartwell (Urban DFW Elite), Ervin Davis (Dallas Showtyme), Tony Johnson (Dallas Mustangs) http://www.allstatesugarbowl.org/site.php?pageID=19&newsID=294se http://www.jackyateshoops.com/teams/default.asp?u=JACKYATESHOOPS&t=c&s=basketball&p=coachprofile&coachID=18937 http://www.terptalk.com/tag/jazzy-hartwell/ http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2008/jun/30/memphis-grizzlies-2008-draft-the-right-choice/ http://www.smumustangs.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/jones_jalen00.html http://inthenews.unt.edu/node/345356 Anyway, just an early thought on possible assistant coach candidates from the high school ranks.

  37. um....the Riverwalk makes the Alamodome better. Seriously, one of the dumbest moves they could make would be building an on campus stadium and giving up one of the best game day advantages/atmospheres around.

  41. What article says UTSA is third behind the three teams that are "in" ? If its only an alliance, UTEP isn't moving and this is a non-issue. All the new found UTSA love on the board is fun an all, but completely ignores the real needs of the MWC teams.

  42. People's anti-UTSA is totally off base. I would love to see UNT build an instate rivalry with them. Why would we not want to be in a conference with a Texas team? It is asinine to think otherwise.
