  1. I'm thinking Case Keenum... He's still got two years of eligibility left right?

  2. Reporting something as the " latest RUMOR I'm hearing" is weak. The latest rumor I'm hearing is that Adam Sparks should do his job and make some calls to see if the rumor is true.

  3. I would be sorry to see Johnny leave, but it's nice to see another UNT HC get interest from the "big boys". It seems all too often we hear that "This guy can't coach", "no one in their right mind would want JJ", "he gets out coached at every turn", etc., etc. Seems to me that all the guy does is win. It would be a shame to have T Mich, Jones, J. Williams, A. Williams, etc, etc. be coming back, UNT being talked about as a top 25 team and then head off to LSU. But, if this is JJ's dream job (as the Texas job was for Coach Aston) who could blame him for heading to Baton Rouge? Not me...I would just be unhappy for the great Mean Green Nation. It is a testament to UNT that UNT coaches are now being seen as top candidates for high level coaching positions around the nation. Seems the folks that actually know what they are talking about are taking notice of the good things that are happening at UNT these days. Here's hoping that we all see Johnny on the sidelines at the Super Pit coaching the Mean Green again next season.....

  4. I hope La Tech Gets in. I don't think we are their competitor. They might be competing with UTSA or Texas State or FIU, but not with us.

  5. I am a fan of Vito's, he really does not write alot of rumor, he ussually does not write something without a concrete source, plus he covers all of the spring practices, and majors sports games for us and we should be glad he does because nobody else is.

  12. I'll preface this with I would love for UNT to be in the same conference with LA Tech. They'd be a good rival; half days drive, regional relevance, higher profile, etc. etc. But the real question is what Tech done since getting passed over for 12th spot in CUSA 7 years ago? UNT passed a new athletic fee, built a new stadium, upgraded its football coach, been the NCAA BB tournament twice, built a new business building, and increased student enrollment. LA Tech has launched a capital campaign to further themselves for UL-M, which is a pretty low standard, but what have they built?

  16. I know loyalty to the program is very important for many on this board. I can appreciate the coach that wants to make his "forever home" at UNT but I would like to offer up a different perspective. I have always wondered how great it would be if UNT could emulate the success that the Tulsa Golden Hurricane enjoyed for a twenty year period between 1982 and 2003: NCAA Tournament: Appearances: 13 2nd Rd: 82, 84, 97, 99, 2002, 2003 Sweet Sixteen: 94, 95, Elite Eight: 2000 Not to mention the NIT Championship in 2001 Would we take that? Now take a look at who coached them during this two decade run: Nolan Richardson (1980–1985) J. D. Barnett (1985–1991) Tubby Smith (1991–1995) Steve Robinson (1995–1997) Bill Self (1997–2000) Buzz Peterson (2000–2001) John Phillips (2001–2004) Two things stand out...whoever their AD was during this time was a freaking genius...and none of these very familiar names stayed very long...Nolan Richardson made people realize that you could win at Tulsa...then it was a matter of smart hire after smart hire to establish the Golden Hurricane as a destination for up and coming coaches. IMO there is nothing wrong with that. Now that our women's coach has taken her dream job, and our men's coach could potentially do the same, the time is now to establish UNT as a destination for the nations brightest up and coming coaches. I don't know for sure but I believe RV is up to that task.

  17. I think Dwayne makes a good point. Who wouldn't be impressed with a private jet and joking on the ride with Terry Bradshaw. And if that's all the "suits" are looking for then La Tech will show off well. However, if the suits are looking for a school with a major airport 30 minutes away to get teams, not executives, in and out quickly, a stadium on I-35, the 5th or 6th biggest television market in the country and brand new modern facilities and venues, well, I hope the "suits" know the difference between smoke and mirrors and the real deal. PS...If you want to fly your private jet from Ruston to Denton, land it on the 6,700 foot Denton Municipal Airport runway (1,700 ft. longer than the airport in Ruston). Use our new FAA control tower and know that after you land you're only about 2 minutes from Apogee Stadium. GO MEAN GREEN

  24. I'm not sure total shock would describe the state we'd be in if we were not to get in. Heck, even ECU'ers and Marshall'ites are conceeding that we are a slam dunk to get in. Still....the Alliance needs North Texas more for DFW than North Texas albeit I think some in the Alliance have been pleasantly surprised (some probably shocked) as to what they have seen in their visits to Denton. (Our 12 year sabbatical in 1-AA took much out of what had been an emerging athletic program in Denton). If we woud have had Apogee Stadium 7 years ago we would have gotten in CUSA back then--Fouts Field stopped us cold in our tracks (and probably because of its track). If we'd had Apogee Stadium in the 70's UT's Darrell Royal would have had an easier case to present with his personal sponsorship for UNT to be in the SWC (which I still miss with even our not being in it). It's always been about a true, bonafide NCAA college on-campus football stadium for North Texas even back when many could have never imagined decades ago what an impact and statement such a new football venue could have made for our school. I know many on this board who knew what it could have done and also knew that Texas Stadium was never the direction for our program to go. We need to lose the term and M.O. of "slo-mo" in our future athletic endeavors in Denton or we will be left behind at the train station again. We have been handed a golden opportunity simply because the Big East grabbed SMU--what irony with all that and could Hollywood have ever scripted this episode of North Texas athletic history any better? GMG!

  30. In my 25 years in the tech school recruiting (sales) business the worse possible thing you can do is put down another competitor because it usually drives said potential client straight to that competitor. You state your case (or positive benefits) and let the one(s) deciding make the final decision. I can't believe that a responsible official at any university would start making comments about another school. With the Alliance, I think our past NCAA D1 history and legacy will be a plus maybe moreso than it ever has before because if you look at all the other candidates, I count exactly "zero" whose own NCAA D1 history comes even close to North Texas beginning in the 1950's. Having said the aforementioned from my quarter a century in education sales, I think LaTech (upon further review and "non smack board" thinking) would still be a great addition to this Alliance, but from all I've gathered from several sources, and reading numerous messasge boards on the subject, I really think Alliance officials mostly paid the Tech'sters a visit more out of courtesy than being serious about adding them this go around. (Hope I'm wrong and that UNT/La Tech get official invites in the next few weeks). Said this before, but I think Bulldog faithful have put way too much of their value and stock based on (mostly) one season (as in this last football season and bowl appearance). Comparing UNT and La Tech when the modern era of the NCAA began in the 1950's and into the next several decades after the 50's is not fair to the Tech'sters and I'd wager that their old timers and older alums would know exactly where I'm coming from with that. Also, I think many of us would like to see the study (or even just a link) whereas the La Tech official suggests that North Texas receives more attention outside DFW than inside the DFW Metroplex. I think a statement like that if it were truly made comes from the "grasping for straws" department. Yet..............with almost 700,000 in Denton County (northern & fastest growing part of the Metroplex), 120,000 inside Denton proper, an enrollment within reach of 40,000 and one campus-based publication saying there are 209,000 DFW UNT exes, I (somewhat) think we get more than our share of attention inside the Metroplex with just our own constituency. Any addition attention beyond our own enourmous DFW numbers is merely icing on the cake. And why not start with 10,000,000 potential listeners in our Mean Green Radio Network audience radar for starters? NOTE: "Only" a 1% audience from that number would be 100,000 listeners. http://www.meangreen...00&ATCLID=68062 Just sayin'... GMG!

  37. What I would like to know from one of the very enthusiastic La Tech fans is what has La Tech got to offer? If all NT and others have on La Tech is student body and budget, what does La Tech have on anybody? In comparison to NT, my only guess would be a slightly better football program. Other than that maybe central geography to CUSA. They tout their academic prowess but don't have the metrics to back it up as if that makes any difference anyway. La Tech has always done a lot with a little and I certainly can appreciate that. But foolish statements like the one in the thread starter, are why most are turned off by the school. Other than budget and size, NT has great advantages in facilities, a better overall athletic program, a market that is vastly bigger even if La Tech includes all of Northern La. and most of all a hell of a lot more potential.

  40. Hahahahahahaha Now that is the funniest thing I have seen posted in relation to this event. So, you either are a member of the law enforcement investigative team, or they run everything by you, OR you consider media reports and 911 tapes complete evidence in a shooting investigation. Or you are pejudiced (again, by the very definition of the word) against Zimmerman.
    1 point
  41. I didn't assume anything, I'm simply asking a question. I heard the raw tape today and there is no way you can clearly make out what he said there. The ONLY ONE that I've heard where it even sort of sounds like Coon was one of the enhanced tapes, I think CNN's, though there is so much raw data out on this story now, it's hard to keep up. the very day this broke into the mainstream, MSNBC and CNN were claiming there was a racial slur on this tape. I'm not sure how you heard it before that was being thrown around. The only reason it ever hit the mainstream is BECAUSE of the racial component. Well, we can agree to disagree on that, as I think the evidence leaves the situation surrounding what happened murky at best. ...that being said, if it DID speak for itself, they would run with it, not message it to fit a narrative. My issue here isn't that I'm trying to defend Zimmerman. Rather I'm saying "I don't know what happened. NOBODY really knows what happened. Why is the news media trying to draw conclusions and create a narrative rather than simply report what we do and don't know about the story?" The only possible conclusion I can come up with is the one stated above. Fuel for the race-baiters and ratings. Nothing more. +1 for the fair response... Thanks!
