  3. Miss St must have low expectations. JJ hasn't won any national titles, hasn't brought in Duke OR Kansas for a home and home series, isn't featured on the And 1 mixtape...hell he hasn't even written a check for a center hanging scoreboard!! When will these other fanbases and sports writers realize they need to expect more!!

  4. Johnny's taken this thing to 2 of our 3 NCAA tournament appearances in program history. He's had us on the precipice of two more these last two years. His job is in no way dependent upon an NCAA tournament appearance next year. How quickly some folks forget how bad this program was. Hundreds of fans in the stands during those crappy years, contrasted to now where we had the best home attendance average since the late 70's when the Pit opened. I get to watch competitive basketball at NT EVERY year now. That's something I'm still thankful for.

  5. i can tell you this about johnny jones. he's highly respected by the western fans that know their hoops. just like any board we have folks that call our conference the suck belt and don't have a clue about anyone not wearing a western jersey. myopic fans. but those of us that follow COLLEGE HOOPS and not just western hoops....we like johnny jones. i can't imagine he's in any trouble at all with his bosses. we have been very fortunate in the times that we knocked out the mean green. never a blowout as far back as i can remember. i might be an idiot but i see improvement in hoops across the sun belt. and even if i didn't i say we (western and unt) leave 'em behind if they don't want to take it serious. and i love our football team. these 2 recruiting classes should be a handful for somebody as early as next year but really troublesome for others their junior seasons.

  6. Now that Off-Season is over and Spring Football is about to begin we can start talking about actual on the field stuff. There is already a good discussion going about Feldt and where he fits into the Oline structure. We have not had an inside look at the offseason program before so we don't have anything to compare to. I will say there are quiet a few of the returning starters from last years team that are in the TOP 20 performers for this off-season.(Going off the performance scores on Facebook page) There is also a good number of backups performing at a high level as well. This tells me that the returning starters are not resting on their past and know that you can always improve yourself. The backups are not all accepting that they are backups and also pushing for playing time. Work ethics catches a coaches eye and they would be more likely to give a player an extra look during reps because of it, thus turning into playing time. There will be several spots open during Spring because of injuries. Both Powers and Prior are out with shoulder surgeries. Lemon is out with a leg.(knee?) This will give others a chance to prove themselves. Miller is one that will have the oppertunity with Powers and Priors spots. Will Feldt be given the chance with Lemon out? I think the fight for No.2 QB spot is wide open. Will Byrd take the oppertunity that is in front of him? RB position is his to lose. WR. Will the redshirts step forward and will Delgado continue his improvement? Defensive backfield. The biggest question mark on the team. Loaded with SRs last year, proved to be the weak link of the team. How will the young guys do? My take. The Oline reloaded with young guy last year and became the bedrock of the team. I think the defensive backfield will be the most improved part of this years team. DLine: Starters = ABBE, Boutwell, McCoy and Obi... the only spot I see where there is question is depth at DT. Linebackers:In good shape, now they need to stay healthy. Special Teams: Need a new snapper. Who will step forward? We now have to wait for April 21.

  7. That pillar is presently 55th out of 75 in off-season performance. I would prefer to see a piller/leader of the team in the Top 10 or even No.1. Boutwell, Y'Barbo' Fortenberry, Ellard and Feeley. There are four of your starting Olinemen. There are your pillers.

  13. Why would anyone think that JJ's job is in any kind of jeopardy? He is a head coach and therefore is definitely subject to criticism that comes with the job. I was very disappointed with the results in 2010-2011 and to a much lesser extent the results in 2011-2012. If he has all the players coming back next year and doesn't greatly improve the conference record and rpi, then I again will be highly disappointed. Jones has moved NT from usually awful to one of the best programs in the Belt, therefore in some's view; he is due unwavering support. Some think the same about Dickey, he took a program form nowhere to 4 straight Belt championships. There are a few detractors, but most realize that Dickey had to go. . I am not trying to compare Jones and Dickey, in my mind there is no comparison other than both revived semi-dead programs. My point in coaching, it is all about what have you done lately. Jones has elevated the program to a level that many expect a lot more than we did a decade ago. If everyone stays on board, JJ will have undoubtedly assembled the most talent ever on a NT basketball team. It provides an opportunity for great things in NT basketball. Failure to capitalize on that opportunity would be horrible but even that is not going to get JJ fired. I think Jones has proven he is a good coach, the question is can he be a great one.

  15. I'm sorry, but based upon what? A Rivals 4-star ranking? I'd expect in 2 year's time you'll have a line of C. Feldt - Lemon - B. Feldt - Y'Barbo - Jornson...but next year to expect a kid with no college experience and 2 years removed from competitive football to step in and easily win either the 1 open spot on the line over numerous returnees or to un-seat 4 good starters seems a bit unrealistic.

  16. For those of us who missed you being pantsed (but heard about it) ... and after seeing you play football ... I would be ok if you skipped the spandex to give us gals our money's worth ... think about it - it's for the cheerleaders. And, they certainly will appreciate it, too! All kidding aside, we're looking forward to watching the game. I played post (I'm 5'2) for my JV 2A high school team 20-something years ago. I could always play and I could be the Washington Generals of the game.

  17. This is in no way a shot at any of our players, but it would be a HUGE letdown if Cam Feldt does not come in here and stake his claim as a stud all-conference o-lineman...simply for the fact that he was supposed to be. I know the argument will be that maybe another one of he guys will be that player, and my counter to that would be then we should have had 2 This guy was brought in here to be the man...preferably at tackle...and if he turns out to be a depth chart guy, then I'm going to be a little upset. Not at the coaches or any of that garbage, but the situation in general. This is a guy I was counting on to be a pillar.

  18. I agree with your comment on the DB's. I like Trice leading the youngsters and think this will fast become a strength of our's. Blake Dunham should become the new long snapper.

  19. He might be clear to not be arrested at the time of the incident, but there's still the whole thing about how he got out of his vehicle and confronted the suspect, despite being told not to do so. I'm thinking he was a little overzealous, and based on other things I've read about his methods, it sounds right. I don't think it's racially motivated. Yes, minorities can be racist against other minorities, but that's not the case here.

  22. As a hispanic Texan, I like the Voter ID law. Only people who are up to something shady would have a problem with trying to defend the integrity of our elections. I don't think it unfaily targets poor people, the elderly, or minorities. It targets people who may want to illegaly influence the outcome of an election. Poor people manage to obtain Lonestar Cards everday. Old people somehow manage to get their medicare. Minorites, like myself, already manage to earn educations, work, and vote. And, can you believe I did it on my own without the help of the government. Wow! Liberals must hate that. The Justice Department = the Demoratic Policy Enforcment Department. What a joke...

  25. pretty embarrassing. i was proud that we didn't quit. we need a point god immediately. kevin kaspar looked pretty good but went down with injury midway through the season. word is that hickey wants to leave lsu and come home but that would involve a sit out. tj price looked good tonight. george fant had a really good second half. derrick gordon had a decent second half. all freshmen. we have some nice parts but definitely need to add more. regardless i'm very happy to have ray in charge. even as godlike a figure that he is he couldn't overcome the talent disparity.

  28. There were rumors all season about Feldt not performing well during practice. You don't think his move to guard even slightly validates that? I would think, if anything, this move either 1) raises questions about his potential or 2) makes one wonder about our depth at tackle.
    1 point
  29. What makes anyone think that Feldt will see the field? He hasn't played a down in two years and really didn't have a sterling off-season. That is why Mac said he is moved to guard. He is down in the depth chart, not replacing Y'Barbo or Lemon. The line up will be exactly as it was last year with Feeley filling in at tackle. That is if Lemon heals from his surgery.

  30. Do you think Lemon or Cam Feldt is going to sit??? Not going to happen

  31. Having an aricle that isn't so obviously slanted to one perspective would surely help to answer your question. Better question: Is this a hate crime? Scantily covered by the media. Yes, the injuries, thank god, were not severe (aside from future lung and eye problems). The answer is we don't know until details of the police investigation are released. On either case.

  32. I would guess T - Fortenberry G - Feldt C - Y'Barbo G - Lemon T - Feeley / Johnson Fortenberry started at tackle until JJ went down. I would imagine they want to move Fortenberry back to tackle if at all possible.

  33. 1 Gotta believe Y'Barbo holds down the other guard spot. Right? 2 I think Fortenberry will have his hands full at C fending off B. Feldt, but he's gotta be the front runner.

  36. Obama calls a GAAP long-standing accepted practice a "Tax loophole" and then goes out of his way to try to convince folks that he is not anti-business? What turnip truck does he think everyone except the mainstream media (who have not so much as mentioned this abomination of a proposal) fell off of recently? The guy is absolutely CLUELESS! Hopefully, this is Obama simply pandering to his base one again and it will be dead before it sees the light of day!

  37. I have no idea about this year's cost structure. We will all know the answer to that question when the packages hit our mailboxes. I am also certain that there will be plenty of "chatter" about it which ever way it goes. One thing I would like to remind everyone...with a limited budget and increasing expenses the Athletic Dept. does need as much revenue as possible...but this could work the way it works when taxes are raised...one actually gets reduced tax revenues instead of increases...I hope the Athletic Dept. personnel understand that concept better than some of our politicians. Just sayin......

  42. The main thing we offer is 3 star recruits the chance to compete immediately for playing time. Some kids value the opportunity to compete more than going to a BCS school where they will ride the bench for their entire career (but only the really smart ones get this). Our facilities are also pretty dang nice. But I get where you are coming from. I fear that not moving up this time around may kill any chance this program has of ever moving up.

  43. I mean seriously, it's clear how lowly we are thought of in the world of College Football. We aren't even discussed as a possible addition to ANY conference by anyone, outside of college football forums. There are now 7 BCS teams in Texas, and we aren't one of them. Which means we are now one of three other teams in the state currently playing FBS football that aren't in a major conference. Which means seven other teams will have first crack at every single recruit in this state, plus the hosts of schools surrounding Texas that regularly recruit the hell out of our backyard. What can we offer a FBS student above and beyond anyone in DFW, much less the rest of Texas? We aren't the best academically. We aren't in a good conference. We don't have a rabid fan base. We don't have the finest location in the state... I mean, what is there that UNT offers that bests the rest, in the mind of a college recruit? This last batch of realignment seems to have really screwed us. ASSUMING all things remain as they are... which we all know is subject to change... what's the bright side? What is there to be excited about? Being better than UTSA and Texas State? Who cares. Feel free to delete this if you think it will negatively affect recruiting more than the Sun Belt/WAC talk already does.

  44. I have said this often, but building Apogee literally saved the UNT Football program from extinction, as Fouts was decrepit and literally couldn't function as a stadium anymore. Generators had to be used to prop that old dump up for a gameday. Apogee keeps us from ever worrying about losing the program, as it is beautiful and modern and cost a lot of money, so the university HAS to keep the program going. What Apogee can't do, though, is get us to move upward to a new conference and change our university's reputation regarding athletics from the last 50+ years. Sure, Apogee will help us if we were to move up, but having games against Texas Southern, Florida International, South Alabama, Louisiana-Lafayette, and Arkansas State will never drive attendance in this market. New conferences want TV sets and media coverage, along with a winning program. Our DFW market has the TV sets, but we have very little media coverage, and obviously, the winning hasn't really been there to create a buzz around the program. What I think about UTSA and Texas State is that they are solid fallbacks for the Sun Belt Conference. I don't think we should try to blackball them, ala SMU vs us, but I don't think we should go overboard to help them get included, either. Same goes for La Tech, and really NMSU, who abandoned our conference and forced us to take the two tranistional Florida Airport schools just to stay FBS. If the conference leadership decides for any of those schools to be admitted, it will be good for UNT, only because people here know of those schools and are somewhat easy to travel to. But, it will also be bad for us because we still have no one with any FBS skins on the wall to be conference mates with from Texas, which further perpetuates our problem that no one worth a damn to Texans will ever be associated with us in a conference. And, to me, the biggest gain from moving up into the merger is that I believe that the future first culling of FBS will be from the WAC/SBC/MAC. I realize that there could be a future culling after this that would take out the remaining Alliance teams, too, but I don't think that will happen any time soon. But I do think that non-Alliance, non-AQs, are going to get dropped back down to a FCS existence, and it will probably happen within the next decade. If we can get in with the Alliance and if we have even just a couple of Texas teams in that league, as well as Tulsa, Tulane, USM, etc. to be associated with, it would do a lot to help continue our progress as a FBS program, as it would probably cement us at the FBS level for many years to come. I don't believe that being in the SBC/WAC conglomerate will do that. I think it will just continue to make us an after-thought in DFW and eventually move us back to a non-FBS level in the future.

  45. This is a joke. We really are that desperate aren't we? Have we been so stagnate over the past 60 years that we are hoping to get into a conference with a school that started their football program 2 years ago? Here I am thinking that maybe we can move up and play some schools with some name recognition so we can attract a larger, more dedicated fan base....but nope we're hoping to get into a conference with two FCS schools 30 miles apart. Adding these two schools should be viewed as a step backwards and we can continue to expect 12k average attendance. I guess it's too much to ask (demand) that we aim a little higher?
    1 point
  46. That is incredibly shortsighted. Yes, UTSA and Texas State are in 1-AA, but after they transition these will be to great rivalries to have. With the addition of these two schools we could have a three way rivalry that would greatly benefit both schools/ fan bases. If we get passed up, we need to ensure that we get in a conference with UTSA and Texas State.

  48. I believe that if there are 18 teams there will be two divisions of nine teams each. It's likely that you would play all eight in your division. Then for some cohesion two formerly OOC games could become OOD games assigned by the league office. But, it could be structured to play say six in your division and a couple from the other division as conference play. I don't really expect there to be more than two inter-divisional games per year due to travel costs. If they decide on 20 teams then four pods of five teams each would make sense. You would play the four teams in your pod plus four games in some combination from the other pod(s). Somehow I don't see a 22-team conference this soon. However, if they did then I see 11-team divisions. That would still make for more complicated scheduling. For the replacement of Hawaii in non-football sports my vote, if I had a vote, would go to Denver.

  49. Funny! You may be on to something there! When I worked the phones this last Tuesday I did have one person authorize a 10% increase in their Mean Green Club donation specifically for baseball and two others discuss additional donations to help with baseball as soon as an "official" word comes out that baseball is being added. Some folks you can count on to take action....others you can count on to talk big until it's time to take action and then pretty much disappear. But, that's the way it goes often these days...some folks do, others complain that someone else isn't doing enough.
