  1. I'm tired of these networks shilling for the Dems. It's clear that Obama's reference to these two teams wanting to be this year's "Cinderella" was a reference to how her fairy Godmother just GAVE her her slippers, dress and coach for the ball...like how welfare recipients want a handout. I see your thinly veiled Socialist agenda!!!

  4. I can't say I have issues with the state of our program with these facts in our corner: 1. Two trips to the NCAA Tournament in the JJ era (three overall) 2. Five consecutive 20 win seasons before 2011-12 and a mildly respectable 18 wins this season despite a late start for T-Mitch and various eligiblity and injury issues. 3. The best recruiting class in program history last season shaking the notion that elite talent won't play at North Texas. 4. A steady increase in home attendence that should continue next season with arguably the best roster in program history. Yes, we coughed up a hairball last week in Hot Springs last week and maybe we would have been playing in a "first round" game tonight, but I stand by what I said that even if we made the next 10 big dances in a row, we would be hard pressed to rise past a 14 or 15 seed because of the perceived weakness of the SBC. If it looks like I'm drinking the green kool aid, so be it but this is a program on the rise and this conference isn't rising along with it.

  6. I'Tiana Taylor is a power forward from Pflugerville High School, and was named MVP of District 16-5A this season and an All-State selection by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. Taylor ranks as the 52nd best power forward in the country by Dan Olsen Girls Basketball Report. As a junior in 2010-11, she helped Pflugerville to a 30-7 record and the regional final, averaging 9.9 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.6 steals and 1.6 assists per game. Loryn Goodwin is a guard from Cypress Falls High School, which made a run to the 5A State Semifinals before falling to Duncanville. She was named District 17-5A MVP and an All-State selection by the Texas Association of Basketball coaches. Prior to the 2011-12 season at Cy-Falls, she played at Temple High School, where she posted 19.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.7 steals, and three assists per game in 2010-11. Sounds like we got 2 sold players that come from winning teams – both could be starters next year.

  7. I'm not calling for a 22 win season or a Belt crown next year, but I'm sure we'll take another step forward. Until we can beat MTSU or UALR, it's hard to believe we can go Dancing. Those schools have proved to be far beyond everyone else the last few years.

  15. It's not just public employee unions; it's all unions. What happens when a union gets its demands? To pay for the wage increase for a select few, the company must raise the price of its goods. Non-union employees may or may not get a raise but if they do that cost is added into the selling price and the rest of the public pays for the union's benefits. The price increase reduces sales and often profits, especially if a competitor doesn't have the same costs to bear. Union leaders must demand more benefits to justify their enormous salaries and the cycle starts over again. China can produce the same goods that we produce for 1/5th of our cost. Understand why we must outsource so much of our production? We can't afford our own labor.

  18. OK, I don't think anyone here has been living in some cave in Siberia for the last 10-20 year, right? This is NOT news. Every program, at every level does this stuff....they do it in HS, they do it in college, they do it in the pros. I don't like it as I think the numbers that should be reported are the "rears in the seats" come game day and that's it, but that's not the way it is. These folks count every possible ticket used, sold, given away, etc., etc. in the attendance numbers. Look, FC Dallas reported a sellout crowd yesterday for their home opener win against the Red Bulls...I was at the park yesterday as part of my work with the FC Dallas Showcase for the US Merchant Marine Academy...as a result I was provided a free ticket to the game...way cool. There were plenty of empty seats...a very nice crowd indeed and probably all tickets were sold (or given away), but the stadium was not full. That's what happens....we just all need to understand it...or maybe push to get the rules changed on how attendance is counted...but, until then...really nothing to get overly worked up about in my opinion. As for UNT, we just all need to do what we can to help REAL attendance numbers climb. The rest will take care of itself.

  21. I haven't seen this brought up here before so I'm going to take a shot at it now. The very fact that WKU is playing in a freaking play in game Tuesday for the "prize" of being a 16 seed in the big dance only to be slapped naked by Kentucky is a huge embarassment to the SBC and its members. Now I understand we had our opportunity to take care of this situation in the conference championship game last week but that rant has come and gone. To see the Sun Belt tournament champion relegated to a play in game quite frankly sets back even further the hope of "building the 'Belt" and makes this conference even less relevent on the national stage than before if that's possible. This isn't some sour grapes slam against Western Kentucky, they did what they had to do in Hot Springs. I guess it just further strengthens my resolve to see us out of this mess of a conference soon. By the way, had we won the tournament last week, where do most of you think we would we have been seeded? I can't see us having to play in a play in game.

  23. GREAT comeback by WKU last evening! Good news for the Hilltopper fans and good news for the SunBelt. Both Sunbelt teams in post-season play won opening round games last evening...good news for the SunBelt and all its members. Should be interesting to see how WKU does against "big brother" and in-state rival (can you call them rivals?) KU. Here's hoping WKU does get that opening tip, the shot clock stops and they can hold the ball! Ha! Great quote from the Coach...priceless! GO HILLTOPPERS...make the Sunbelt proud! Can it happen? YES! Will it happen? Odds say no...but I say this is March Madness and NCAA basketball...anything can happen. It ain't over for the Hilltoppers yet!

  34. Excellent explanation. Where I live, near that dirty ole "oil industry", the unions are well represented. OCAW, Teamsters, etc. Gets really interesting when the contracts are up for renewal. Years ago in the '70s and '80s, the unions would completely shut down the oil refineries for months, and on a few occasions, a year or more. Don't get me wrong, working in an oil refinery is dangerous. Not only do you worry about explosions and fires, but also the health risk that appear later in the lives of these workers. Cancer, asbestosis, etc. However, if a regular worker spends his entire working life at a refinery, they will end up with, on the average, $1 million to retire on. And that is workers without a college degree. A kid right out of high school can get a two year "process operator" degree and start out at a refinery at around $70K. It could be more now. To you point, as wages for employees go up, employers simply do one of two things: go up on the price of products, or cut the work force. A business owner or manufacturer has to bring xx per cent return on his investment or at one time, it wasn't worth staying in business. You could sell out and invest your money for a larger return. Like you say, it's a vicious cycle that not many understand.

  38. Let's remember - this is a volunteer's unit. I was a member of the Brigade in the early '90s when we were nursing the old white 80's uniforms with red accents along. After the down-right badass uniforms from my Highschool, these uniforms at the collegiate level were embarrassing. Kids going through the Highschool marching band ranks are being drilled to be as much like the major drum and bugle corps as possible. Freshmen coming to UNT are going to be excited if the band uniform is as nice as if not nicer than the ones they had in Highschool. These accomplish this mission. ...a return to a dated look of the 60's would be a step back in my opinion. Schools like Texas, Ohio State, even Tech get away with the old-school uniforms because they have been consistent. Since our band's uniform has been updated regularly, to suddenly jerk back 4 decades would look really silly. Both of these uniforms look great and the band will look fantastic in both. Regarding the casual uniforms, (T-Shirt and Shorts) I'm with the rest of you. When I was in band, you wore the uniform. You all wore matching Tshirts under your jacket. If it was stifling in the stands, you removed the jacket, but pants and T-shirts created consistency while allowing the members to cool off a bit. ...but when the band is on the field, they should be in uniform.

  39. I don't have any problem with the Band calling themselves the "Green Brigade". It's one of the few "constants" about the band, and it remains a very unique moniker. Here is what a Brigade really looks like.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Flickr_-_The_U.S._Army_-_Wisconsin_Army_National_Guard.jpg the standard number is 3200. I can't however find any historical "Green Brigades", so we remain very unique in this area. I first watched the North Texas band in the mid-60's (homecoming, my HS band was one of the bands invited to participate)and except for the company front that they started out with at the beginning of their show (usually starting from the NW end zone), they never marched military style for the whole show. They DID however march with a lot more energy and SHOWMANSHIP than the current version......Mr. McAdow's standard (and constant) command was "FLOURISH, FLOURISH". If I ever win the lottery, I will offer to fund a return to the Ohio St-like uni's of the 60's and leave the fashion statements to the designers of the costumes for the dancers. The only update that I would do for these classic uni's would be to put the UNT Alumni NT-star on the uni somewhere. Probably on the chest plate, as well as an arm patch. I would also put the NT-star on the bass drums, and arch over it "NORTH TEXAS" and under it I would put "GREEN BRIGADE". I would also get rid of that Enron logo that they've been using for some time. North Texas already has a logo. They either represent this University or they don't. AND I would make them drop that DAMN SILLY CAW that they do in the fight song. I've already addressed my concerns about their pre-game pageantry. Or, more to the point, the lack thereof. Some of you just knew that I would do some sort of rant, or pseudo-rant, in this thread. Glad I didn't disappoint you.

  40. I don't have a real preference for band uniforms. I'd like to think they have some green, but I'm OK with whatever the band pros think will show off the Green Brigade the best. What I really would like to see is a dignified summer uniform. A real uniform, not just a t-shirt and mismatching shorts. Marching bands wearing shorts is a new thing. When I was in school, bands marched in their uniforms. Period. It was hot then as well. But times have changed and I understand that. I would guess that some of our biggest crowds attend during warm months. Therefore, the Green Brigade is viewed as frequently during "t-shirt" performances as "full dressa uniform" performances. Shoes also. Can the band wear their "dress" shoes while wearing shorts ? Just make a pro sounding band look pro. GO MEAN GREEN

  41. This is a huge decision. I understand the uniforms are about 500 each so we are speaking about a great deal of money here. A few things... first. like Sliver Eagle, I would like a return to the old days but that is not going to happen. Our colors are green and white but black is used because white fades easily and begins to look dingy after a few years as anyone from the 70's can readily attest. I don't know about you, but my white leisure suit just doesn't attract the girls like it did in 1973. Besides, who has time to go to the disco anymore? With a life-span of ten years plus, I would be careful about incorporating anything specific to our current branding as it will surely change. SOW, the distinctive font, the shade of green, etc. Given our track record for changing these things, I would bet that none of that will be in use in 2022. Does anyone remember the Winslow era uniforms? They were ordered while Fry was coach and used that distinctive apple green and the worm. Fry left and the school was on to another shade of green. I must say, they looked pretty silly. It seems that only at North Texas do we have these problems. About the moniker Green Brigade, it works as well as any. North Texas has never marched in a military style by the way. Also, the new trend is for marching bands in Texas to start calling themselves "Outdoor Performing Ensembles" Good grief.

  43. We would have been a 18 seed and a candidate for a play in game. Our strength of schedule was terrible. MTSU could have been as high as a 13 seed. Too bad for the Sun Belt that they choked in Hot Springs. This happens from time to time with every single bid conference.

  44. Blasphemy! I couldn't imagine anything other than the Green Brigade. I vote for SOW black pant - very sharp. However, a black based uniform means they will debut on Tuesday 10.16 right? Get a good deal for 3 wears. GMG

  45. I never stated they bought their way into their new conference. True, SMU had opened Ford, but they weren't/aren't filling it, something you said hampered North Texas while hosting UH. SMU's home schedule has been much more attractive than our's and we have outdrawn them for the past several years. By the way, just for the sake of accuracy, NT has won two bowl games. Not much to brag about, but since your throwing out facts... Comparing Jones success in the WAC/CUSA vs. McCarney's at a Big XII school is laughable. McCarney took a program that was almost below bottom of the barrel in ISU, turned them around and took them to multiple bowl games while playing in a conference with the likes of OU, Nebraska, UT, etc... Jones beat Marshal, San Diego State, etc... and built Hawaii while in the WAC. Bad comparison. True, SMU ponied up the cash for him and they have improved, but does anyone care in the Dallas market? I could care less how SMU has performed historically against us. It has nothing to do with being attractive to a conference. Hell, we have an overall winning record against Boise State and they are a hell of a lot better than SMU. By the way, NT has a 51% overall winning percentage to SMU's 48%

  46. In studying conflict between groups sociologist came to a very simple two part conclusion. The first part is that the groups are in conflict with one another because they misunderstand each other's goals and intentions. The second is that they are in conflict because they UNDERSTAND ONE ANOTHER VERY WELL. If you are a SMU grad, then your very arrogant response came as no surprise to me at all. And yes, I understand the ways of the world very well. I was just hoping that there had to be some other explanation, besides SMU having several Billionaires on their board of regents, and their purchased past sports glory, for getting invited to high profile conferences......with no discernible following outside of the confines of Highland Park and University Park.
