The football forum has been a little slow lately and I know I've missed some of the ranting of the good old days... So here are the first mock-ups of the new Green Brigade Uniforms that are going to come out next year that I saw on the GB Facebook page(not finished products... just different concepts in developement) Your welcome. Again, not being a basketball aficionado, we fire him for winning or finishing runner-up in the Sun Belt four or five times in the last six seasons, then what? -Do other college basketball coaches covet this job? -What are the odds we get a proven head coach instead of just a "hot" assistant (SEE Wojcik fired from Tulsa today)? -What does our money say we could do? Being as ignorant as I am about our basketball program in total depth, I have to look at it just as a casual fan from my alma mater. From that perspective, it looks...what's the word...crazy to give up a bird in the hand to chase two in the bush. Although...I do know some people like to put their hands in the bush.4 points

Look Rodd Todge, checkfacts, or whatever your latest troll name happens to be, anyone that uses a UNT moniker as a screen name to do nothing but bash UNT is nothing but a troll, troll. Why do you feel the need to constantly change identity, troll? Because you are trolling, troll. Post as SMUfan, TXStfan, and I could give a crap what you post, troll. But you don't, troll. Instead you troll, troll. Have I mentioned that you are a troll? Just so everyone knows who/what you are, troll.2 points

I agree...I have been around since Hayden Fry and can tell you that even though RV has made a couple of bad mistakes (ie TD) he has a love and passion for UNT as much as anyone I have ever seen...and he has done a tremendous amount for UNT...so the spinners can jump on the board and I will ignore them as usual.2 points

RV haters: Where you at? I need to see how this will be spinned. I mean, this isn't the flipping Bleacher Report. This is CBS Sports. Isn't this the news you all have been asking for: An answer to "What has RV done?", and "Why aren't we seeing any stories leaking that pair UNT with the new conference?" EDIT: And Baseball rumblings to boot!2 points

When you start winning the expectations start to increase. I love JJ dearly and hope he is a NT lifer but I think he's got to continue the progression of the program and that means he's got to virtually put this program as a shoe in for the big dance and be able to win some tournament games as far as the next level is concerned. We know he can recruit quality players now but it is time for the next level. At some point as great as 20 wins is...it's still in a conference that isn't perceived all that great and unless we win our conference we'll have no shot of getting into the big dance. It's time to elevate this program and get ranked as well get getting to the tournament and getting some wins and shocking the world.2 points

In studying conflict between groups sociologist came to a very simple two part conclusion. The first part is that the groups are in conflict with one another because they misunderstand each other's goals and intentions. The second is that they are in conflict because they UNDERSTAND ONE ANOTHER VERY WELL. If you are a SMU grad, then your very arrogant response came as no surprise to me at all. And yes, I understand the ways of the world very well. I was just hoping that there had to be some other explanation, besides SMU having several Billionaires on their board of regents, and their purchased past sports glory, for getting invited to high profile conferences......with no discernible following outside of the confines of Highland Park and University Park.2 points

I know so little about basketball that I'm happy with Johnny Jones. He wins season after season at a school where football coaches have complained that we have limited resources. These were our basketball records for the years I was on campus: 1990-91: 17-13 1991-92: 15-14 1992-93: 5-21 That was when we were in the Pee Pants Conference (Southland). As long as Johnny is doing better than 12.33333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333 wins per season, he's doing better than when I was a student living in Denton. And, that's good enough for me. He's got 180 wins in 11 years here, and has led us to two of the three NCAA Tournaments we've ever appeared in so...what are we bitching about again? I'm still hip to JJ.2 points

Big East or The Alliance? I guess the BE with the money and new players but I bet those fans are going to miss the commoraderie they had with more nearby programs. Lobos, Miners, Golden Hurricane, Green Wave, Owls, Bulldogs and Golden Eagles - welcome to Apogee and The Superpit! GMG2 points

SMU did well in the CIT last year. Tells you all you need to know about the quality of this tournament. It did WONDERS for their program this year...they scored 60 once I think.2 points

I think so. Even if Tony does not return, the expectations will still be there, correct? My point is: regardless of the expectations, I think a lot of the momentum and excitement built the past two seasons could be undone/disappear if we fall short again. ...and maybe - unjustly or not - JJ gets labeled as the coach who can't get "over the hump".1 point

I vote for the Son of Worm rendition with the black or green pants. I think the black pants look better, but green is one of school's colors. The breast plate design reminds me of the Atari 2600 for some reason.1 point

And yet, outside of Dallas (or Highland Park or University Park) you RARELY see anyone wearing SMU gear, or display an SMU sticker on their car. I've seen UNT stickers and people wearing UNT gear all over the Southwest United States. The appeal to the masses is just not there. Even the SMU football players (especially the players of color) of the "pony express" era went to Denton to find girlfriends because (like the vast majority of the general population in the D/FW area) they DIDN'T IDENTIFY WITH THE SMU CORE CULTURE. And I would submit that neither do the vast majority of the viewing public out there.1 point

Unreal where are this universities priorities? We have to fix that sidewalk in front of the Super Pit before we do anything! Baseball can't get here fast enough.. RV count me and my family in for 3 of the finest seats in the stadium!1 point

Some really nice stadiums...I wonder what the budget requires to build and maintain these stadiums? Is there a spot where one can find that info? Would also make for interesting comparisons and would give us a feel for what UNT must allocate to baseball. We'll definitely need more Mean Green Club Members and some increased donations from existing members to do this right. I hope everyone doesn't just sit back and say..."well there is some big rich guy that wants to fund the whole thing"...not going to happen. It will take $$$$ on an on-going basis to make this happen and to be competitive. I'm on board for increasing my donation level as best I can to help...even if it isn't men's soccer....which, by the way, would be way less expensive...just saying..... :-). But, count me in for an bit of an increase...who else?1 point

And if basketball jerseys are any indications, #5 will be the only jersey you will be able to buy this year, thus ensuring a couple of more fans in that jersey. Don't worry, you will be able to get a T-Shirt with your favorite player's number on it, no problem.1 point

These comments mean absolutely nothing. He is like a used car salesman. He will just substitute MTSU or FIU for UNT when asked about those schools.1 point

Amen. Losing at BB in KY is unacceptable and not tolerated. Look at the The NCAA tourny this year. KY has 4 schools in it and one of them is a number 1 seed. UNT should just come to KY and copy the attitude more than anything else. UNT has the talent but we just never play with the same intenisty that I see up here. Kids play BB here like their damn lives depend on winning. A good comparison would be the way you guys view football in Texas.1 point

NT has an opportunity if everyone returns to be real special next year. Beating cream-puffs in the oc, going 10-6 in the Belt and winning the Belt tournament and losing in the first round in the NCAA based on NT history is a great season. But it is past time to take that next step, and actually be at least a top 50 team. Talents like Mitchell may never come to NT again unless the program rises to a point it is expected to get great recruits not a miracle. I can't see JJ ever having a better chance at NT to elevate the program. Next year's team can be a cornerstone to build on. WKU and others will be much better than this year, frankly if JJ can't beat them with the squad he may have next year, than I see a bad trend developing. Look at WKU who won primarily because their freshmen came on at the end of the year, J. Williams and Jones IMO are as good as any of their freshmen and there is no one in the league as good as Mitchell. I find posts relative to NT being competitive with WKU, ULL next year as maybe realistic based on NT's performance the last two years, but I hope and think this team should aim a lot higher. JJ has build the team up from the Trilli ashes, and got the program to a level it has not ever consistently been. He has been successful taking mostly under recruited players and getting them to play team ball and he has elevated the program to be one of the better Belt programs. He has taken the next step in recruiting last year, can he move the team up to match the talent he has assembled? This post has been promoted to an article1 point

I appreciate Karl Benson and his kind words about the University of North Texas and if it hadn't come from the Bleacher Report (sort of the National Enquirer of college football) those comments would have more validity. Maybe the timing wasn't right following the demise of Big West football but I don't recall a long look from the WAC when we were in need of a conference. It could have been our fault that we weren't ready to commit to spending the amount required for such a venture. Yet, the Big West had pretty big travel costs as Louisiana and Arkansas State left just before we entered. Nevertheless, his 16-team WAC did not include us so he couldn't have been too overly infatuated. I wish Karl tremendous success in his role as Sun Belt Commissioner whether we stay or go. He does seem to have vision and is forward-thinking in his conference design.1 point

i think we need to get past "just happy to be in NCAA tourney"to "we need to get in higher than a 16 seed". someone else posted something to the effect that J.J.'s goal seems to be winning 20 games by loading up on non conference teams with low RPI's for 10 or more wins, go 9&7 in regulat season, and make a run in the Belt tourney.[correct me if i am wrong, but i think we have only won 1 Western Division Belt title during his tenure.]the problem with this is that even if we win the Belt tourney, our RPI is so low that we are a "play in" team fighting to be a 16 seed, or a 16 seed outright. the only way that i can see to improve our RPI is to make winning 20 games secondary by scheduling up, something J.J. seems reluctant to do.1 point

One would have to think that any extended playing time, whether it's these little SMU level tournaments or summer international play, would benefit the team. The games really don't count for anything and the extended practice time would give Johnny the chance to try different looks and work on some of the areas that he think the team needs to improve.1 point

I am not a fan of retiring numbers for college teams. Every year you should have about 25 kids graduate and 25 incoming players... The math does not support retiring numbers in college sports... Let's just honor young men with a hof and leave it at that.1 point

11 Years–2 appearances in the Big Dance-lost both by 20 points–Time for JJ to Make Changes Hilltopper Head Coach Ray Harper has been on national championship teams at several levels in the NCAA - took over the WKU program at mid season – team at 3-11 and ended by beating every major conference contender the Sunbelt had in the tournament and is now going to the NCAA Big Dance. To go to the next level we need to adopt the WKU Offensive Scheme and Defensive Scheme and Beat them next year with their own stuff – what we are doing now does not seem to be working – lets try something that has beaten the best in our conference. This is what WKU BASKETBALL has done– feel like it is worth copying! 3 NCAA Tournament wins since 2008 - 2008 and 2009 Sun Belt Conference Champions Two NBA Draft picks in last four years (Courtney Lee, 1st round, 2008; Jeremy Evans, 2nd round, 2010) 42 conference championships, third most in NCAA history 40 seasons with 20+ wins, sixth-most in NCAA history 38 All-Americans 34 national post-season appearances 21 NCAA Tournament berths 14th in NCAA history in all-time wins (1,643) 8th in NCAA history in all-time winning percentage (.670) 7 "Sweet 16" appearances in NCAA tournament NCAA Final Four in 19711 point

NT finished on fumes, not sure prolonging the season would be worth the effort. A foreign tour would be much more beneficial next year if all the academic casualties can participate.1 point

I think North Texas is at a point where it would probably break even by hosting these CBI or CIT tournament games and could possibly even profit. And, if nothing else, the tournaments provide extra practice time and generate a little interest in the program. Does anybody believe that there wouldn't be interest if North Texas was set to host Rice as Louisiana is slated to do? North Texas has probably been extended invitations to both the CBI and the CIT. The CBI would give North Texas the opportunity to host local Big XII or SEC teams, and that's something that we don't get too often in the regular season.1 point

OK, I don't think anyone here has been living in some cave in Siberia for the last 10-20 year, right? This is NOT news. Every program, at every level does this stuff....they do it in HS, they do it in college, they do it in the pros. I don't like it as I think the numbers that should be reported are the "rears in the seats" come game day and that's it, but that's not the way it is. These folks count every possible ticket used, sold, given away, etc., etc. in the attendance numbers. Look, FC Dallas reported a sellout crowd yesterday for their home opener win against the Red Bulls...I was at the park yesterday as part of my work with the FC Dallas Showcase for the US Merchant Marine Academy...as a result I was provided a free ticket to the game...way cool. There were plenty of empty seats...a very nice crowd indeed and probably all tickets were sold (or given away), but the stadium was not full. That's what happens....we just all need to understand it...or maybe push to get the rules changed on how attendance is counted...but, until then...really nothing to get overly worked up about in my opinion. As for UNT, we just all need to do what we can to help REAL attendance numbers climb. The rest will take care of itself.0 points

Can't we wait until we have good attendance before casting stones.0 points

Like...to save his job? No. I think we should be the favorite in the West, but I am not even sure we're the overall favorite. WKU is just as young as we are, and they just beat us when it counted the most. We're probably co-favorites with them.0 points
