  1. Just thought I'd post this here and share it with the board. Our oldest received his official acceptance letter from UNT yesterday. We're really excited for him! Now I get to buy "UNT Dad" stuff! Anyway, just wanted to share the news from a pumped parent.

  2. Alonzo Edwards was a consummate teammate. He definitely had his struggles, with bad knees, with fouling -- but he was always there when called (not to mention one of the most intense cheerleaders on the team). His two best games were probably in last year's SBC tourney upset of FAU where he came up with nine large boards & this year against ULM where he had a career high nine points. What can you say about Tyler Hall? He was a seldom used walk-on, until called into action with our academic casualties. He then proceeds to be a crucial cog in our lineup. He started, he became a key reserve for energy minutes, he hit big 3's, and he proved to be a stunningly good passer. One of the best walk-ons I have ever seen to be honest. Kedrick Hogans was an absolute warrior for us during his stay here. He didn't have the senior year that I (and many others no doubt) thought he would have because he was so injured. But he put off scoping his knee so he'd have a shot to play and help the team out down the stretch. A true leader by example.

  3. Being new to UNT with my son just signing 2/1, seems to be alot of excitement around UNT FOOTBALL with Coach Mac. A great start to next season is the spring game 4/21. I know it is currently scheduled at 2 pm. Many schools use this as a huge recruiting tool for the next class. How GREAT would it be if APOGEE was packed out for the spring game???!!! Recruits could see how the GREEN NATION rocks. I know many of us football junkies will be in major football withdrawals by then.

  4. I'm going to try to sum this all up for everyone & then we can all just drop this subject and move forward with the off season. This isn't something we need to discuss for the next few weeks. Was it immature? Yes Why was it immature ? Because he's only 19 and hasnt matured yet . Anyone here who claims to have been matured by 19 is lying Why hasn't he matured yet? Because his whole basketball career he's probably succeeded at anything he's tried to accomplish. Here is a kid who has had a limited number of games under his belt trying to carry an entire team on his back towards a journey to greatness. I think what we had here was someone who for the first time in his life felt like he had failed and you can't fault him for that Just as in life, in basketball we can't succeed until we first fail. This is a learning experience for all the players involved. This will make them even better for the future. As a scout , I would see it as a kid not mentally ready for the next level yet. I hope Tony and his advisors do as well. Once Tony gains 100% confidence and learns to handle his emotions better he will be destined for stardom. I love this kid. But we have to remember that he is still just that, a kid

  6. ... or maybe at that moment, he felt he let a lot of people down and didn't deserve it. How many times have I seen posted that he is very humble and he worked to be more unselfish as a player through the season (not that I ever heard he was selfish)? The team just lost and moments after the loss while trying to deal with it, you are forced to get up and be happy go lucky and accept an award that you are not feeling so worthy of. It took quite a few fans at least 24 hours to recover, and you can tell by some of the posts. And screw the WKY fans that booed. F'em. So ... Tony, you deserve it. You gave it your best. Next year...

  12. This is the report card of a team that wins 10 games and bows out of the conf. tournament in the first round as a 12 seed. You're not giving alot of these guys enough credit. EDIT: Here's how I would score it- Hogans: C, big man was basically running on adrenaline out there. He was still able to contribute in the middle, although not as much as we thought... however we did not know the extent of his injuires. So maybe some of those expectations were overly optimistic. Edwards: D, You're spot on here really, and that's sad. Hall: B, Hall exceeded any and all expectations for him this year. It's a good thing too because we relied on him way too much. Holmen: B+, He was banged up a little this year as well and I think that kept him from getting an A for me. Solid contributor. Niko: B-, This guy was key for some serious runs throughout the year. Offensively, he was a fairly consistent player for us. Defensively... needs improvement. Walton: B, Hit some HUGE shots this year for us. Also missed some HUGE shots for us this year. Overall, a very nice piece and a solid contributor to the team. Franklin: B+, Franklin contributed to the team in alot of unseen ways. He stepped right in as the vocal leader of the team when Hogans wouldn't. 2nd on the team in boards and he scored more when Jones/Williams departed. Patton: I, we won't know anything about him until next year. A. Williams: A, I don't know how you could give this guy anything less than an A. Proved to be the best player on the team other than Mitchell. Mitchell: A+, he was as advertised. Norris: C-, I upped him because of some of his flashes. He has alot of development to do... Good thing he's only a freshman! Robinson: C-, We missed out on alot of him this year due to various injuries. I thought JJ would consider redshirting him... See Norris' grade for reasoning. Jones: I, Headed for an A+... then we all know what happened. J Williams: I, Headed for a B+ to A-... then we all know what happened.

  13. i actually wanted to do this last night but realize how raw a home message board is following a loss so opted to wait until today. i've felt for years we're the only two programs in the belt that understand hoops much less gives a crap about them. so it was with much happiness that i saw the 2 of us in the championship game....again. i really wanted to drive the 467 miles yesterday morning to be there but work wouldn't permit so i watched it on the tube. both teams had great recruiting classes. the top 2 in the belt. both teams had devastating incidents mid-season. you guys lost 2 absolute studs. we got rid of dead weight by firing the worst coach in western kentucky history. even though ours was addition by subtraction nobody expected ray to turn it around as quick as he did. the guys were out of shape. george fant lost 11 pounds the first 2 weeks ray coached us. you guys bounced back even after losing the 2 freshmen. made it all the way to the finals. tony mitchell is as fine a player as i've seen in the sun belt conference. not freshman...player. part of me wants you guys to keep him one more year but another part wants to see him go to the association. even if you lose him there are bright days ahead for north texas hoops. i certainly feel with ray harper at the helm we have bright days ahead too. i assure you this is no flame post and i sure as hell wouldn't be congratulating the middle folks if they had won it. good luck in the new conference. i'll miss the mean green. we'll be the only team that remotely gives a crap about hoops. dahbeed.

  14. Thanks, basketball guys, for the insight. I just don't know as much about the other basketball tournaments. I think in football, sometimes a school barely breaks even on a minor bowl game. Just wasn't sure what the deal was in these basketball tournaments. For my part, I guess I'd like to see another 20-win season. Selfish? Yes. Wish it had been done during the season and conference tournament. But, I'd say getting 18 wins out of this crew after the two suspensions was a pretty good year.

  20. Clarke comes from an outstanding family. I rmember 6 or 7 years ago when the entire Overlander family volunteered their time at the Children's Advocacy Center. Despite being a young teen and pre teen respectively, Clarke and his brother worked their tails off, never complained, and were eager to help. Rod and his wife remodeled our bathroom, if I remember correctly. I am so excited and honored to have them as part of the Mean Green family.

  22. Hot Springs ain't bad, and unless we want to lose half of our traveling fanbase, proximity should be the important thing as far as we're concerned. Are we really concerned about other team's fans? I mean really? The closer to us the better. Anything much more distant than Hot Springs really takes the day trip advantage away from us, and there's not many more attractive options closer to home. Unless of course the powers that be decide to move the tourney to North Texas for the next couple of years. OK by me.

  24. Cooley : Just a few months ago you said Clarke shouldn't be a ship player and now you have him starting ? I wasn't a fan of Walton before , but I am now. He struggled at JUCO because he had to run the point and was the only real scorer they had on the team. He had to shoot too many shots that he probably wouldn't normally take. This year he comes in and started off slow(which is typical of a JUCO) , but I thought he really carried this team at times during the season. Several times when we needed a big bucket he was the only one with the balls enough to take a shot. His defense isn't outstanding , but he does have a knack for making plays. I'll agree he does need to improve on his FT % I've only seen Clarke play once , so I'm no expert. But I see no way he starts over Walton. He's probably the better pure shooter , but not overall player at this point Both could be coming off the bench. Do we move Alzee back to the 2 or maybe slide Patton there and have Alzee come in and run both like DJ did for us. Either way , we have a lot of options Just my .02 Grand, Agree on a lot.I would maybe change a few minor things , but overall pretty good report card

  25. I like Hot Springs and its location is great for a lot of NT fans. However, after three years I have about had my fill of the city. I like the small town feel and it is easy to navigate but there is not a whole lot to do. Also the facilities and support from the town are not overwhelming. I should be ashamed but I don't want to hear high school bands and middle school choirs at a championship event. It is an easy drive and the town does have charm and very well could be the best place from a NT perspective. As a relatively small town it does have its drawbacks but if I were choosing between the rumored Biloxi and Hot Springs; I would take Hot Springs in a blink.

  27. I have given you my clueless evaluation and although I appreciate your astute observation, how about giving me some support to counter my view instead of the shorthand version. I gave you my rationale I was rating basically against Belt teams and players and was basing my grades on "on court" performance. Sure if you consider "if and buts" you can rate this team and many of the individual players higher; which is exactly what I said. The facts are almost every team has sad tales to tell and it is impossible to gauge one team against another based on what ifs. ULL had two key players suspended during the tournament, ASU threw their supposed to be best player off the team early season, and WKU changed coaches mid stream. Impossible to factor all that in and we obviously don't know as much about other teams' issues. Homer-ism is great but this team had a deserved rpi of 196 and finished 9-7 in the Belt with one of the weakest SOS in the nation. If that is not a C, I don't know what it is. Everyone has opinions and those that actually bother to actually contribute to the discussion seemed to be mostly in line with my view, however many seemed to cringe at the grading system. I realize that Holmen, Hogans, Edwards, Robinson and maybe others all had injury issues, but frankly that is part of the game. If you want to qualify their performance based on those outside factors great, but that was not the basis of my evaluations. GreenBat, it is a great to be a fan but try to actually take a minute and analysis your comments before you type 'enter". I am not going to call you clueless but your and others lack of objectivity is amazing.

  36. That's the point. Legal alcohol is already a major problem in auto accidents. Illegal marijuana is also a big problem in auto accidents. Legalizing it would make the problem even worse. So, there's no real point in it. Also, there's the ridiculous notion that the black market would disappear. There would be an age limit on it, like alcohol. Unlike alcohol, it doesn't have to be bottled or canned to get quality product. It will still be selling on the streets even if it's legalized. Of course, we're talking about a huge pipe dream anyway given that it will never be legal Federally. And, as we continue to see with states trying to invent their own immigration laws, Federal judges apply Federal laws to quash what the State misconstrue as areas where they may freely legislate. Until the Feds changed the schedule status of marijuana, it doesn't matter what states do...as "decriminalized" and "medical marijuana" states, and the potheads therein, have discovered: the states through their courts in applying Federal law to cases and the potheads as they are led away in handcuffs by Federal agents. Ignore NORML because they are baked. Federal law is where the ballgame is. Although, believe me, I understand NORML rakes in plenty of dopehead cash in telling people they'll make it all better at the state level. NORML rakes it in off of "joining" and 501 ©(3) status. They're like the NRA in that regard. If you have constructive purpose, you can always go 501©(3) and make money by scaring people and making them empty promises. Most people are too lazy (or, in NORML's case, stoned) to understand they can't do 99.9% of what they say they can anyway.

  39. When they called his name for the award, he originally acted like he wasn't going to go up and get it until Coach Forrest (I think) gave him a nudge (the WKU fans were booing by that point). When he did start walking up to get it, he was moping along very slowly while everyone else was waiting. Immature? Yes. Justified? No. Understandable? Yes.

  41. Well, for me it's pretty darn easy...and it's because this is MY university, and I am a two time grad of UNT. The wins are great, the losses suck, but that's all part of being a fan...and it's also why I don't take the wins and losses personally as many on here seem to do...screws up ones life to much to be that sensitive to the outcome of a game. The good times FAR outweigh the bad and they last with me far longer than do the "bad time losses". I tend to get over losses pretty fast and move along to the next game or next season. Only one D-1 team in the country will win it's last game this season or any season. Tough to be THAT team! When the time comes that I no longer enjoy being part of the Great Mean Green Nation, I'll simply walk away with no regrets what so ever. However, I don't see that day ever coming...win, lose or draw...this is MY university and I love it! Had a great time at every home game at Apogee last season and enjoyed every one of UNT's home BB games and enjoyed Hot Springs and my away football game to LaLa...yes, UNT lost to LaLa in football this year...still great road trip! Sports are for fun...unless you are the athlete in question...then it's a job and fun! If I didn't have fun I wouldn't do it...why would anyone? If UNT football, basketball, etc. is your "life", I think you need to take a long hard look in the mirror, have a few beers and figure out why. Lots of great stuff in this big grand world of ours. being a fan is only part of it...yes, a heartbreaking part at times, but the "break" heals fast as there is always "next season" and a "next game". And, by the way...UNT will be NCAA Champs......next year!

  42. At least the majority of you guys have been fans for a couple decades(then again I'm glad I never experienced 1-AA football) I became a fan in 2004 when me and 4 or 5 buddies at the age of 14 went to NMSU homecoming game. We sat in the south endzone and it changed me life. When I heard the crowd roar after Jonas Buckles(or Knowlton can't really remember) put that hit on the WR during that game it sealed the deal for me, I knew I'd be a fan for life. That was 2004, so I only got to experience one really good year. It's been pretty bad since then, but I've missed maybe 4(football) home games since then. My support will never waver. Only 1 of my buddies that went with me is still a die hard, but regardless we're destined for great things. If you look at the facilities, coaches and young talent we have in place the next two or three years could be pretty special for both basketball and football. I know everyone is heartbroken. My reaction last night @8 PM was to turn tv off, immediately shut off all lights, and go to sleep. Earliest I've been to bed in a long time. But spring ball will be here in no time, and for now the best thing to do is keep your mind off of it and try not to let it affect your mood. The mean green will live on. Tony will be back, along with CJ/JW and this team dances(and bowls) next season.

  45. I thought Tony played fairly well considering the fact he has played all of one half of a season in two years. He is the only freshman in D1 this year to average a double double....give the guy a break. He wears Green and plays for our school.
