I'm sure he is. That doesn't mean he's either at the top of their list nor that he is necessarily wanting to leave. I think it's a positive that we have staff that other schools WANT to take. I don't want to lose him.5 points

It's not possibly, it's fact. It takes .1 of a gram of meth to get you high. It takes 2 grams of (brick)weed to get you high. So you are partially right in that way more weed comes here than meth, but that's because drug users are 80% potheads 10% pill poppers and 10% meth/coke/heroin users. The only people who smoke mexi-bud are old people set in their ways or broke young people. The weed people prefer to smoke is from California. It is grown cleaner, isn't compressed, and is a lot stronger as well as not being sprayed with harmful insecticides. This form of weed(high grade) is much better for you, and can be used for a longer duration by patients. Legalizing it would have a huge effect on the cartels because they wouldn't be able to produce the quality marijuana the United States produces. They throw 10,000+ plus seeds on a plot, grow them for 6 months, and send it this way, it's cheap and people smoke it for that reason. If it's legalized, the stronger cleaner weed will be mass produced, thus driving the price down of the "good stuff" and the cartels and their shitty weed will struggle to put out a product people here would want to ingest. And the theme is, if you stopped spending billions trying to eradicate weed, you could spend your resources on stopping the drugs that actually ruin peoples lives. Coke, heroin, and meth.3 points

Look, I want to make it clear that I have nothing against Texas St. or UTSA. I hope you are successful in the WAC. My position here is based soley on what is best for the University of North Texas, which doesn't include conference membership with either TSU or UTSA. Pay your dues in the WAC and maybe we will see you in 10 years in CUSA.3 points

A Re-Post To Our Friends From Texas State-SM and UTSA: History and legacy will not buy too many cups of coffee in today's NCAA but still it is important to have them and to have them at the NCAA's highest level of competition. No, UNT never won a National Championship since the modern era of NCAA Division 1 began in the 1950's, but we were hardly chopped liver during that era of so very few bowl games and our existence even in the shadows of the Southwest Conference. For what it's worth, history, legacy or whatever you want to call it and our shared #5 ranked TV market is what (basically) got SMU into Big East. Bottom-feeder you say? Well, SMU is a school with about 3 winning seasons the last 25 years and that did not stop Big East officials from giving the Mustangs an invite and (again) the #5 (soon to pass Philly' and be #4) ranked TV market will probably get North Texas in the Alliance, too, if all our recent indicators prove to be true. North Texas: Hardly A Notre Dame-Type Legacy--But At Least...A Legacy Dating Back To The 1950's To The Present At The NCAA's Highest Level (except for 12 years in 1-aa). Where were most other schools in the NCAA presently in "non AQ" (non BCS) leagues in the 1950's--the beginning of the modern era of NCAA football? Is a school's legacy that important? I would say it would be especially if that school developed its brand which most in the present non AQ/non-BCS did not (including our school, ie, North Texas). S M U truly doesn't have many winning seasons in the last 2 1/2 decades, doesn't have many fans for a bowl team (and that the prime reason June Jones will eventually leave SMU) but............. ........SMU does have a brand that was developed in the 1930's and 1940's and that is why the Big East chose SMU (poor attendance and all) rather than choosing some CUSA or MWC schools who are more deserving with some of those schools kicking butt at the turnstiles with numerous winning seasons in their past, too. It's all about a school's brand, folks--this is today's NCAA and most of us do not have it because of what we "were not" doing in the 1930's and 1940's in intercollegiate football. . 2 Eras which occurred before the Hayden Fry Era at North Texas which was during most of the 70's and those 2 eras which is North Texas football legacy beginning in the modern era of the NCAA. The 1950's began in a most eventful way when the University of North Texas administration led by its school president, ie, Dr. Carl Matthews would lead the way in the state of Texas (and the Southwest) to integrate and that with the first 2 blacks, namely, one who many would call the American Football League's (AFL) first bonafide superstar, ie, the great Abner Haynes and his good friend, (now) Dr. Leon King whose college career was not as celebrated as Haynes. They both enrolled at North Texas in the mid 1950's after graduating from Dallas Lincoln High School 1'st Significant Era At North Texas In The NCAA's Modern Era: This mid-1950's North Texas football team led by Time Magazine All American Abner Haynes also played at the highest level of NCAA back then and that era which would later be called the beginnings of the modern era of NCAA college football. The level North Texas played in the early 50's was not College Division, NCAA Division II, NCAA III or NAIA, it was (once again) the highest level of NCAA football competition during that era. NT Athletics Hall of Famer, Texas Sports Hall of Famer and Kansas City Chief Hall of Honor inductee Abner Haynes would take his North Texas team to the 1959 Sun Bowl in his senior year. Owner Lamar Hunt would sign Haynes to the (then) Dallas Texans in the end zone of our former football stadium, Fouts Field. The Texans would soon become the KC Chiefs. 2'nd Significant Era At North Texas: The Mean Joe Greene Years It was mostly Houston and North Texas who were integrating their Texas inter-collegiate football teams long before SMU intregated with Jerry Levias in 1965. The Joe Greene led Mean Green would play in a "bowl-less" Missouri Valley Conference which included Houston, Tulsa, Cincinatti, Memphis, Louisville and others. Joe Greene's Era at North Texas had 3 or 4 #1 draft choices but their most signifcant game may have been a loss against Frank Broyles' Arkansas Razorbacks. The late Ron Shanklin who was another Mean Green NFL high draft choice wide receiver said several Arkansas Razorbacks called him years later to tell him "Sorry, Ron, but you guys really won that game against us and that end of game home cookin call which robbed your team of a winning TD was as embarrassing to us as anyone--except the SWC refs, of course." That North Texas "home cookin' referried" loss was against that top ranked 1968 Arkansas Razorback football team and yes, a loss, but that was the quality of Mean Green football back in the 1960's and during the Mean Joe Greene Era. 3'rd Significant Era At North Texas: That was the Hayden Fry Era which would probably give our program more true national notoriety than any that preceded it but it would end too soon as Fry left for Iowa and the Big 10 after 6 years in Denton and a just 2 or 3 years later the North Texas administration making the biggest mistake in our athletic history when it chose to wave the white flag and go down to the next level which would be called NCAA D1-AA. We are still in recovery from those little over 10 years in college football purgatory truth be known but the recovery is still happening now with our new Apogee Stadium, an expected upsurge in Texas HS Rivals recruiting due to our new stadium and a dramatic boost in our football budget beginning in 2012. It's really all good and getting better plus the TV market our school resides is not too shabby, either, since it will eventually do for UNT what it has done for SMU. GMG!3 points

NFL Scouting is all about the players, not the record of their school. These days every NCAA FBS, FCS, D2, D3, NAIA college/university with a football team gets one or more visits from NFL Scouts. The NFL uses National and Regional Services who share their reports with all the NFL Teams. In addition, each team will have their own scouts and many belong to scouting pools with other teams which have agreed to fund the scouting budget. Whether a team is winning or losing plays no part in players getting a LOOK or not. Very rare that a player gets overlooked in todays NFL, but it does happen, which is why the NFL instituted Regional Combines just to find that gem than might have fallen through the cracks.2 points

Looking at the bracket is the 5th seed bye really the best option? I know playing a 4th game is rough, but getting the 6th seed you open with the 11th seed (Troy?). Then you move on to the 3rd seed (lafayette), 2nd seed (little Rock), and then the Championship game. 5th seed bye sets you up to play Middle in the semis. Again i know the 4 in 4 days is rough, but if your playing the 11th seed and we can win convincingly and not have to push our guys so much that side of the bracket would set up much more favorably for us then the Middle side.2 points

Maybe Denton and UNT students will support the SOW on the helmet after we have a rally (of course during the women’s 1st round Sun Belt game) at the upgraded Super Pit. We can show the new all black uniforms on the jumbo tron. No one will show because the athletic department didn’t personally call anyone and this will jeopardize us getting into the Conference USA/ MWC alliance and we will be stuck playing 4 homes games in our new stadium (with in operable turbines) against FCS schools.2 points
-
There won't be a WAC in a couple years. I think it's pretty clear that the conference commissioner who invited UTSA and Texas State to the WAC will be adding them to the Sun Belt. If we get the MWCUSA invite and can climb one rung on the ladder, great. But if not, having two more Belt schools in Texas will help us.2 points

This psychoanalysis is complete garbage. Those of us who are realistic about UNT's current place in the football world are not suffering from low self-esteem or acting like domestic violence victims. Until we get an invite, we're in the Sun Belt and have to make the most of it. The idea that we can move up if we all start feeling better about ourselves is hilarious. Does that work in your everyday life? Do great things happen just because you want them to? I'm guessing no. You have to make them happen by putting in the work. Getting Apogee built and hiring McCarney were two steps in that direction. Actually filling the place would be a third.2 points

No, you haven't "passed us", but you are very close to us. Texas State-San Marcos reported $33.5M In research expenditures for FY 2011 and UNT reported $37.5M for the same period. UNT's figure represented a 20 percent increase over 2010. As our engineering programs mature expenditures should increase. UNT is producing the level of research it is at what heretofore has largely been a liberal arts university. Yes, your grad rates are higher but your admission standards are lower, and UNT is raising its standards this coming fall. Congrats on JUST RECENTLY surpassing us in endowment funds. I don't expect that to last.2 points

So many of you are so wrong on so many accounts I don't even know where to start. Weed is 60-70 percent of cartels profits because the demand for weed, dirt weed albeit, is insane. You hear about 2 ton brick weed busts all the time in the news, the hard drugs, not as often. The cartels have 80% of the cocaine trade, but only 50% of the heroin trade where as they have 98% of the meth trade. I almost lost my own mother because the doctor thought she needed 4 valium a day and 4 10mg hydrocodons each day for her headaches. She smokes a joint a day now, takes no pills and is doing better than I have seen in ten years. I cannot believe that ANYONE would compare pharmaceutical drugs to marijuana. Marijuana won't make you pass out driving, marijuana won't butcher your liver, marijuana provides legitimate medical benefits to people with serious illnesses. What don't you people get? Also, I find it funny that the topic poster links 20+ marijuana death related topics. That's because it rarely happens, and when it does, it's huge news to everyone. "Drunk driver kills family of 4" just don't seem to interest the people. No, they'd rather rationalize their own opinions on a substance they've been told their whole life to hate, yet they have never even tried so don't know what it does to you. How can you draw an opinion on something you've never tried? Do you just choose to ignore the fact that the reason marijuana was prohibited in the first place was because the big wigs saw the benefits of hemp(which cannot get you high BTW) and how it would put their companies out of business and made sure everyone in the country knew hemp & marijuana were not to be used? There's plenty of people in this country who abuse marijuana and alcohol, however, I would much rather have anyone smoking weed than drinking. "Man, those stoners just piss me off so much, thinkin they can legalize this medicine for people with AIDS and cancer and other physical ailments who would like a medicine that doesn't make them pass out 30 mins after taking it and doesn't destroy your liver or give you other horrible side effects, those damn drug users, ain't worth NOTHIN! It makes me so mad I'm gonna go on a forum and link all marijuana related deaths, even the ones with alcohol involved, so people will know just how much I believed in DARE when I grew up." Here ya go, I can do it to. Drunk driver kills 2 Drunk driver kills cop Man, I was going to spend my time putting drunk driving deaths links here but then I realized you'll never change these peoples minds. I just want you people to know, I'm not in favor of full legalization, but it has medical benefits that I have seen first hand and whether you like it or not, your type of people are dieing off. The old stubborn people who won't even accept scientific studies as evidence are fading, and the young people are growing older. I'd venture to say 60% of 18-22 year olds smoke weed, and they will be the voters of the future. I also know 98% of the people against marijuana are bible thumpers. "And God said... I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. ..And to every beast of the earth.. I have given every green herb for meat... " Genesis 1:29-30 What say you to this, oh mighty people who know everything?2 points

Answered in succession: Yes, they are. That's because there is a college football heirarchy, and UTSA and TX St. are not at our level in that heirarchy. We should do everything we can to make sure that doesn't happen. Again, this is a business. IT'S NOT 1994!!! My god, people, how low is your self esteem when it comes to UNT football?? If it was 94, I would be all for them and UTSA moving up into a conference at the same time we made the move. IT'S NOT!!!!!!!!!!!! Do you really want to keep associating with the bottom feeders of FBS football?? Please expect more. UTSA has huge competition in their market. It's a little school called the University of Texas a little over an hour up the road (just a little further than UNT is from the vaunted Dallas market). San Antonio has been and will continue to be UT's market. UTSA faces the exact same challenges we face with the Dallas market, except for the fact that they have been around less than 2 years and the San Antonio market is far smaller than the Dallas market. Look, it's not just these 2 schools. If we have to stay in the Belt (God forbid), we should demand that the Belt not be the "hey, let's move up to FBS football conference" Conference. You think the Belt is disrespected now? Wait until Benson starts opening the door to any FCS program that will raise their skirt. Hopefully, we move out of this god forsaken mess that is the Sun Belt into the CUSA/MWC alliance. When we start making it worth their while (get the football equivelent of an RPI above 60), other Texas schools will start coming to UNT. We damn sure aren't going to convince them to play us by sharing a conference with 2 FCS programs. Or, we can just give up and be happy we have 2 close road games that no one outside of this board would give 2 sh*&s about.2 points
-
That's the kind of reasoning that SMU used to keep UNT out of its conference for decades. UNT needs to play more Texas schools. We gain a lot more by having two in-state conference rivals than we stand to lose by having those rivals in our conference. Everyone in the Sun Belt gains when a school prospers in the conference.2 points

Chalk me up as one who believes the HUGE increase in demand in China and India over that past ten years is the biggest culprit here. But, as long as we're having some fun, remember that Bush's proposed solution to the high gas prices during his 2000 campaign (which were approaching $1.85 in California!!!) was to get OPEC to "open up the spigot." No talk of domestic development in drilling, refining, or infrastructure. Just get OPEC to produce more!1 point

I too think this is good news for UNT. When this round of realignment is over, I don't know if there will be a big difference in the quality of football found in the MW/USA and the Big East. The biggest difference may end up being the quality of basketball and the T.V. contracts of each conference. I think that makes it very important for the alliance to add the largest media markets they can attract. Things are getting interesting.1 point

Other than RV telling us so, why do you think NT staff is stretched. Visit the staff directory, and tell me what those people do on a day to day basis. Two people over concessions, 6 people in the ticket office, a number in promotions and information services. I have no doubt NT does not have the bloated staffs of many other schools, but I am serious what do they fill their day with. It takes several full time people to come up with the NT promotions, two to handle concessions, and a bunch to handle NT communications. This really has nothing to do with hiring outside firms that may have more expertise and contacts in a particular field. I just wonder what possibly two people could do in a 40 hour work week in concessions or how many it takes to put out NT press releases and athletic site updates. I am sure that most do much more than their job titles imply and some may be part time, but nether do I necessarily buy they are working themselves to death.1 point
-
Wow, you think SMU opposing NT from joining the old SWC is why they are now in the Big East? You really believe it had anything to do with it? I don't like the idea of being the home for FCS move ups, but by the time either school could join they will already BE FBS schools. According to nearly every published report, the Presidents of the Allience schools are thinking of UTSA in the same terms as they think of NT. If I remember correctly, the school we have played the most in our history is TXST.1 point

regardless off whether you respect these schools or not, it would be ignorant to think that these schools would not put more butts in seats at home games... also... it'd be nice to make a 4-5 hour trip to be able to see an in conference game...1 point

Does everyone understand that any oil extracted from the ground (from here or any location in the world) goes to the world market for pricing. So the real bad guys in any high fuel price situation is the speculators. Many people love to use the line from a Shakespeare play that goes "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers". I would update that and substitute "oil speculators" for Lawyers.1 point

UNT is making moves to invest over $100 million in a student Union building, right after having built a new stadium, business building and life sciences building. Next I heard, the auditorium was given consideration for a renovation. I don't see the Coliseum being considered anywhere, which probably means we won't see anything major done arena-wise for the rest of the decade. I hope I'm wrong though, a new arena or a highly renovated Pit would put our athletic facilities at a really high level, specially if we eventually expand the stadium...we'd easily have the best facilities in the DFW, I think. And that would say a lot about UNT. Believe.1 point

If Tech can't accept the Belt's membership, so be it. If they want to join the conference it should be on terms set by the conference. There should be no "Monroe issue" as far as the conference is concerned in dealing with Tech.1 point

The albino squirrels are a light-hearted bit of UNT lore. By the same token, we've won a few really down to the wire games (like Denver). I think our 8-6 record is pretty reflective what we are right now. We still have an awful lot of talent though.
