  1. Quite frankly, law enforcement officers aren't people to trust on the issue of a drug's effects. Law enforcement during Prohibition would gladly have told you all the evils surrounding liquor. Violent crime surrounds marijuana today primarily as a SIDE EFFECT of it being illegal. The problem is that the vast majority of people that law enforcement come across are dirtbags. And yes, when you engage in one crime, it's far more likely that you engage in others. BECAUSE marijuana is illegal, then the primary source of information for law enforcement are going to be dirtbags. I'd be willing to bet that it becomes increasingly difficult to separate their interactions with marijuana from ones that have combinations of marijuana, alcohol, and meth these days. I know functioning members of society, who have kids and families and make 6 figures and lead productive lives and aren't violent and commit no other crimes than being casual marijuana smokers. In fact, I'd say I worry far more about my alcoholic friends than the ones I know that smoke WAY TOO MUCH weed (some of whom get more done in a day than I do all week, the bastards). It's not a reporting issue. It's a reality issue. There's a plateau for the effects of marijuana. You can't smoke it until you piss your pants, puke, or die. Alcohol, however, can kill you all by itself. Also, whether it's the paranoia or the neurological effects of marijuana that cause it, studies reveal that alcohol makes drivers more likely to speed, marijuana more likely to drive slower. Now, they're equally likely to cause an accident, because in both cases, reaction times are significantly slowed. BUT, once again, there's a plateau for marijuana. You won't find a person driving 100mph and passed out on marijuana. You will on alcohol. My brother's a police officer, and I've talked to him in length about this. I have NO PROBLEM with enforcing the laws, stupid or not. But I wouldn't trust a single person involved in law enforcement to lecture me on the physiological or behavioral effects of different drugs. They don't deal with drugs, they deal with criminals. The inability to separate the two presents an obvious bias. A cop's never going to be at a party where people smoke marijuana and drink and nothing bad happens. And, once again, for the record, I don't smoke. But there's so much misinformation being thrown around here that it's ridiculous. I just think it's funny and hypocritical that anyone who drinks or owns a gun is against the decriminalization of marijuana.

  6. Instead of railing on the legalization of pot why not push for the the crimalization of alcohol? Let's save some serious lives here. If we shall be tilting at windmills lets charge in head first For every mother that lost a child to a drunk or stoned driver another lost one to gang violence and all the accompanied devastation from the illegal drug trade. I am in the camp that education and rehabilitation would cost half as much as the war on drugs and save many lives.

  7. The albino squirrels are a light-hearted bit of UNT lore. The society was still around as recently as 2008: http://web3.unt.edu/news/story.cfm?story=11208 When did supporting UNT become such serious business? If you believe the sight of a depigmented rodent is disrespecting a cannon, maybe it's time to head up to TCU so they can hook you up with a dime bag of herbal stress reducer.

  8. Does everyone understand that any oil extracted from the ground (from here or any location in the world) goes to the world market for pricing. So the real bad guys in any high fuel price situation is the speculators. Many people love to use the line from a Shakespeare play that goes "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers". I would update that and substitute "oil speculators" for Lawyers.

  12. After years of trying, the University of Memphis made it into the Big East. The Tigers will join some former conference rivals as well as some Conference USA defectors in the 2013-14 season. How do those schools — with so much conference history — stack up to each other by the numbers? Athletic department expenses can be an indicator of the level of commitment to competing at the highest level in college athletics. MBJ has created a sortable database (below) of Division 1 college athletic departments based on Equality in Athletics data from the U.S. Department of Education. Data can be sorted by clicking any of the tabs at the top of the database; more detailed information on each university’s athletic department is available by clicking on the ‘View Details’ link to the right of each university’s information. 17. That's the reasoning SMU used EFFECTIVELY to keep UNT out of it's conference for decades. How did that work put for SMU? Well, they are in a BCS conference, so they must have done something right. UNT needs to play more Texas schools THAT MATTER!! UTSA and TX St are not those type of schools. He'll, why not just establish an every year home and home with Texas Southern. Really not much of a difference. Excuse me for not wanting to be in the second coming of the Southland. Played plenty of Texas teams then. Guess what. No one gave a crap.

  18. Yes. Until the US actually has a policy and a program to get off the middle eastern, Mexican, etc. teet and become self-sufficient in oil and gas production, this will continue to happen. Few, if any, new refineries have been built in the US in some time (thanks environmental lobby and other tree huggers and frog lovers on the left as well), the Keystone pipeline was denied by Obama (again...thank you environmental lobby), off-shore drilling has been seriously curtailed, just today the Wall Street Journal reports that Obama is proposing increased taxes on the Oil and Gas industry, Alaskan oil exploration has been seriously curtailed (gee, thanks environmental lobby)...do we see a pattern here? Then we cry about rising gasoline prices, the threat from Iran to curtail oil shipments to England and France (funny, England and France get very little of their oil from Iran), the always present threat from OPEC (not just middle eastern members to OPEC folks) and on and on and on. I fully believe that if the US citizenry demanded it, like when Kennedy announced the US would be standing on the Moon in X amount of time, that this great nation of ours could be self-sustaining in oil and gas production/consumption within three to five years! And, that's WITH plenty of reasonable safeguards for the environment! No one wants to destroy the environment...no one, in spite of what the environmental whacko's will tell you. This is not just an Obama "problem"...I seem to recall every president in recent memory calling for programs to be sulf-sufficient in energy...every party...but when it comes time for the "rubber to meet the road" it's..."not in my backyard", "it will kill a tree", "it will add to global warming", "the jobs won't all be union jobs", "the jobs will all be union jobs", the polar baer won't be able to crap where he wants to", "we might kill a fish or two", "the reactor might melt down", and on and on and on.... The American public had been duped in a big way...there is more than enough energy reserves to power this great nation for the foreseeable future right here at home and in Canada. There is absolutely ZERO reason this nation cannot become self-sufficient within 3-5 years IF we, as a nation, made it a number on priority! It can be done, and it can be done quickly...however, we do not seem to have politicians who really care to do anything about it. Both parties talk a good game, but never get off the dime! Wait until gasoline is over $5.00 a gallon soon and listen to all the rhetoric flowing from DC, the Republican Party, the Democratic, etc. All just campaign talk..."All Hat No Cattle"!

  19. Like all things historical, we as a society tend to forget, ignore, or just be ignorant of, some of our past learning experiences. Organized crime wasn't near as "organized" and powerful until prohibition came along. Then their power (fueled by the profits of illegal alcohol sales) and ability to corrupt grew almost out of control. Now, I don't think you'll find organized crime in the alcohol business so much anymore, but where do you find them? Ask anyone in Mexico or central/south America. When you legalize the use of marijuana and start taxing the hell out of it, THEN the people who grow and sell it will have to pay more of the cost of re-hab programs rather than the general public via taxes. Well, actually the people who buy it from an authorized supplier will pay for the cost of rehab because the taxes will be passed on to the customer by the supplier. Yes, I do understand basic business practices. This means more money for rehab and education and less money for weapons and turf wars between the current "suppliers". In this scenario, the biggest loser will be the automatic weapons manufacturing industry.

  20. That threat is what bothers me. My understanding was that the Keystone pipeline was going to run next to existing pipelines that already criss cross all throughout the US. It seems like his decision was just to appeal to the environmentalists even though the pipeline's effects were not going to be detrimental to the environment. I know his decision ticked off some unions who looked forward to the increase in jobs. Didn't the house pass something lately that requires Obama to revisit the Keystone idea?

  22. UNT is making moves to invest over $100 million in a student Union building, right after having built a new stadium, business building and life sciences building. Next I heard, the auditorium was given consideration for a renovation. I don't see the Coliseum being considered anywhere, which probably means we won't see anything major done arena-wise for the rest of the decade. I hope I'm wrong though, a new arena or a highly renovated Pit would put our athletic facilities at a really high level, specially if we eventually expand the stadium...we'd easily have the best facilities in the DFW, I think. And that would say a lot about UNT. Believe.

  24. True, but certain teams can deliver a really big slice of that market. And lets remember that to advertisers sports are valued even higher than other programs because people watch those things live. Plenty of people will record "insert sitcom name here" and then skip over the commercials, but almost no one does that to live sports. That concept is flawed, or else KDFI would have cleaned up when it was broadcasting the North Texas games a few years back. Despite the superior locality of UNT and the huge number of alums we have in the area, the spare B12 game of the week was getting much better ratings. But that is OK. A&M, Texas and Oklahoma aren't looking to join the alliance, they aren't are competition. What the alliance is looking at is either teams that can deliver a good part of a very small market, or teams that can deliver a slice of a very large market when there is nothing head to head with it. Which is great for us. The amount of people in DFW who will tune into a North Texas game, especially if we aren't playing head to head with B12 games, is going to dwarf the number of sets someone like LaTech can deliver. Sure we may have to play games on non traditional days, but sweet sweet TV money will help with the pain.

  25. He sounds like a politician, saying what he thinks the "voters" want to hear. I have no doubt that he will do what is best for the Sun Belt, but that is not necessarily what is best for North Texas. If the invitation to join the Alliance (sounds like Star Wars!) is offered, there should be no question about accepting it. Benson will undoubtedly do his job as commissioner and attempt to entice us not to leave - we need to have a deaf ear to his pleas. If we don't get the invite, and we stay in the Sun Belt, then I expect we will find him to be a better commissioner than WW.

  26. My Letter to the editor of the Denton paper this morning...I wonder if they will publish it? 2-21-12 Letter to the Editor- Denton-Record Chronicle TO THE CITY LEADERS OF DENTON-ARE YOU WATCHING? Recently, some bad news flowed from the campus of TCU regarding some selfish students who made the decision to risk their futures and the reputation of their university by selling drugs on or near the campus of TCU. What was the response from the city leaders of Ft. Worth to this situation? Support…support for the major educational institution within their city. Very public and swift support followed by a call from the city leaders for everyone in the community to wear purple in support of TCU! How refreshing to witness Ft. Worth’s city leaders public support for TCU. When was the last time the city leaders of Denton seemed to even recognize the existence of UNT within its borders in such a public fashion? Heck, in Denton on a fall Saturday game day one could be on the Square, at the Golden Triangle Mall, or in any area of Denton and have no clue that a game was taking place that day. UNT recently unveiled an aggressive five year plan for progress. Where were the city leaders of Denton with any sort of proclamation or support for UNT, the largest economic engine and employer within the city? It is long past time that the city and business leaders of Denton recognized how important UNT is to Denton and its economy and started acting like they knew! Denton – are you paying any attention at all?

  38. There are things more important at UNT than a women's basketball game... or a men's basketball game... or any ATHLETIC event. This logic being thrown out suggests that ANY event on campus that coincides with ANY sporting event should be canceled and rescheduled. What about the students performing in plays and such at the Performing Arts building? Are you going to skip your subpar football team's game for that? What about the music students who work longer and harder on their work that ANY athlete at UNT? Would you miss the basketball game for their performance? I highly doubt it. The Athletic Department scheduling something is foolish, but the Alumni scheduling something, depending on what it is, is not wrong. Athletics is NOT number 1 at ANY university, if it is, then the University had got it ALL wrong.

I have always enjoyed the time I have spent on your campus and have a lot of friends who have gone there. Back to the topic being discussed, I see no way that UNT can be passed over in the expansion process. Too many positives going for you guys. Haven't seen the new stadium but have been told it is beautiful. Your location is almost perfect from a TV stand point. Much as SMU's was. We both have attendance problems but with better competition and good marketing that can be handled. I truly hope you guys make the jump to the merger and am looking forward to our future series with y'all. Oh, and don't pay attention to some of the junk said on our board about UNT. It is just a message board after all and I have read a lot of SMU BS on this board as well. Have a great day and good luck.

  43. You just likened a drug bust at TCU to football attendance at UNT? Really, man? Having grown up in Ft. Worth, let me tell you that the "leaders" of Ft. Worth didn't give a damn about TCU athletics until they got good...and I'm talking legit, top 10 in the country good. I watched L.T. go for 300 yards on the likes of San Jose State and Hawaii in the old WAC in front of 15,000 people. I would sit nearly court-side on bought GA tickets to watch Kurt Thomas and then Lee Nailon put up 100 points a night playing Billy-ball (Chuck) en-route to a few stays in the top 25. I'm not saying Denton couldn't do more, but to make such a reach in in correlation and laud the city of Ft. Worth for it's apparently unwavering support of TCU, you ought realize its actually supporting it's top 10 program and that Rose Bowl victory and the notoriety it brought and not actually the school itself. If TCU was a middle of the road program right now this neither would've been news nor would you have such public support from city leadership.

  44. I was taking you serious up until SMU. From what I've heard, their big arena plans won't mean much until they create an exit strategy for Coach Doh's doghouse. Yeah, they could make that great next hire, but their basketball history hasn't been kind to them in that regard.

  45. But all of the above are in a better conference or have a nicer facility.... Its time to take advantage of what we have in Mitchel and build on this program... a new arena ... a new conference would be a great start!
    1 point
  46. No Mitchel... I have been watching these mock drafts from day one and always assumed he would stay and this still confirms what I think. We will have one more year of T-Mitch with Williams and Jones! We just need to do something about our conference and our arena... SMU, TCU, Baylor, and now UTA all have a leg up on us in the area... I get around the area (hear things via people) and it is really looking harder and harder to contend in the metroplex with what UTA has done and the SMU/TCU moves. UNT needs to get on the ball and take full advantage of having Mitchel!
