  1. When I was in school, we drank with TCU people and threw some parties together. I had good times and its pretty simple as to why, at least I, like TCU more. SMU always appeared boring to me. Sorry, SMU didn't exactly peg the fun meter. Pretty campus or not. (The original post seemed preoccupied as to why SMU lost the popularity contest. I hope this helps.) As far as football, I say screw it. We play whoever and start winning again. As far as SMU goes, they are on the schedule. Beat them on the field and leave it at that. One final note, UNT has better looking girls than either of the aforementioned institutions. Yes, I am biased. Proceed...

  4. I'll humbly eat these Humble Pies, but if you believe we're going to win against FAU, I'll order you the world famous #1 "Certifiable" from Cathy's Crazy Custards store in Tioga. The #2, "Loco", is actually more like Flan, but it's not bad.

  5. Dude are you blind? Huge crowd for them, way more than 500. There were 798 of them in attendance, they were so loud they made it sound like 803.

  6. Seems UNT90 and I were having a civil discourse. Why don't you go back to your "the mean kids don't listen to my crotchety and self-important bitching anymore so I'm taking my ball and going home" board?

  8. Aside for the fact that Texas' worthless TV network runs afoul the SEC profit-sharing, it's wholly laughable to think either OU or Texas would join the SEC. In the Big 12, OU and Texas lord it over the rest, earning far more than the other schools. OU is about to launch their own crappy network as well to rake in even more money. The other side is the cowardice of the two schools. There is no way either of them want a piece of the SEC week in and week out. As it was, they were trying to spearhead a move to a basketball conference, the Pac-12 last year and the year before. When I think of OU and Texas and SEC, all I can think of is them having their asses handed to them in title games. OU and Texas think they have speed and power; SEC schools actually do have it. Believe me, as many brainfarts as Bob Stoops and Mack Brown have annually in coaching, they don't want to further damage to their reputations by letting Nick Saban, Les Miles, and others run roughshod over them annually. OU and Texas are more than happy to add TCU and West Virginia because they are non-threatening to anything they already possess - recruiting territory, hands on the cash register, and control of the commissioner. Why would they give all of that up just to have their asses kicked by Alabama, LSU, et. al. on an annual basis.

  10. ---These "super conferences" are insanity. College football is not pro football, they are supposedly student athletes. I even believe a real playoff would put a stop to some of this craziness. Then championships would be decided on the field and not from what conference you are in as it somewhat now. To be national champion you need to be in one of 4-5 conferences. Ask TCU. I am getting more disgusted with college football all the time... because of these super conferences and all the cheating and scandals etc. that goes on. Even coaching salaries are insane compared to what they were just a few years ago.

  11. I just want to shed some light on something rarely discussed about President Reagan’s 2 terms or any President for that matter. The single most powerful governmental force affecting the economy is the Federal Reserve. This was especially true under Reagan. During the entire decade of the 70’s inflation was giving Americans a beating and the fed funds rate was on a consistent trajectory higher. Not something any President wants to see during their term, especially their first. Higher interest rates increase savings and an upward trajectory often reduces loan volume and loan amount. The fed was hard at work reducing the money supply already and when Carter appointed Volcker in 79' to the Fed it became down right draconian. For instance when Carter left office both inflation and the feds fund rate were over 11% and rising. Something most on this board could not fathom. In 1980 inflation spiked to 14%……..holly crap 14%!!!!!! Volcker took the strongest stance ever seen by the Fed and raised the Fed Funds rate to 20%……..20%!!!!!!!! Unemployment sky-rocketed to well over 10% and Volcker was one of the most hated men in the Country. Maybe even less popular than a very unpopular President Reagan. 1980 − 1982 were pretty tough times in this country because of this. I remember my parents bought a house in the early 80’s. What was their mortgage rate with good credit? 15%!! I currently pay 4% The story has a happy ending though, especially for Republicans. Volcker crushed inflation (with a little help from Reagan cozying up with the Middle East) and the Fed Funds rate was lowered consistently through most the 80’s starting around the end of 1981. This brought unemployment down with it and a strengthening economy followed. Factor in that Reagan lowered taxes to the lowest levels in the post WWII era and massively increased defense spending through increased deficits and the economy was humming right along. Soooo….. With unemployment on a slow and steady path downward starting around 1982, folks happy with their recent tax breaks, and high savings rates for the previous 10 years, Americans were finally feeling pretty good. Reagan won in a landslide in 84’ with an unemployment rate higher than when he took office but on the decline. Some here may want to argue everything that I am missing about Reagan’s first term. I don’t care. I just wanted to say, before you get all riled up about what a President did or did not do for the economy. It is the men and women of the Fed that are the true puppet masters.

  15. Not even close...hell, McCain ran more on a "I'm not Bush" campaign than either Clinton or Obama.
    2 points
  16. Actually, the facts plain and simple are that no presidential election has been won on the platform of "I'm not _____(current president)." The Republicans will eventually settle on a candidate that will appeal to about a third of their base and maybe a quarter of the moderates and will bank on winning with a "I'm not Obama" campaign rather than "I'm _______, a strong and charismatic leader with this clear plan of action to move America forward." It will fail...it failed in 2004, 1984, anyone led to slaughter against FDR...it's just not a successful strategy for winning an election. The primaries have shown that the nomination will eventual be won by attrition. The loyalists will still just punch the R square at the top of the card, but each one...Romney, Santorum and Gingrich...have something off-putting enough to swing voters to keep them away. Romney's willingness to change his stance on everything at any given moment depending upon to whom he's attempting to pander may well be the only Republican hope.

  24. People always lose sight of the original ppurpose of the right to bear arms, which was protection from an oppresive government. Thank God in our almost 236 year history, we have not had an oppressive government (I know, civil war buffs, I know), but that doesn't mean that the day will never come.

  25. I consider an "assault weapon" any weapon that was originally designed for military use. AK 47's, AR-15's (civilian version of M-16's)...the list goes on and on. They were originally designed for full automatic mode as well as semi-automatic mode. And just because they are "semi-auto" in the gun shop, doesn't mean that they cannot be made full auto again. You can argue all you want about owning one of these weapons for protecting your family etc etc, but for personal protection, you can't beat the old stand by.....a shotgun. It protects you and your family and stray shotgun pellets (unlike stray hi velocity bullets) don't kill people in their homes several blocks away...or even across the street for that matter.

  27. Yes, he looked more aggressive and confident than usual, and seemed to have no qualms about attacking or defending down low when the situation presented itself. The only positive in regard to losing our two freshmen, is that our upperclassmen are getting some serious minutes. We are no longer putting a very young product out on the floor, and hopefully these guys can all come together and peak come tourney time.

  28. The TV team is that stupid. I am sure the Belt told the the top 3 AFTER the Division winners get a bye.

  29. Good game for NT, Brandon Walton stole the show late. Can't believe those were Belt announcers especially with their constant reference to what a sloppy game. No way Mitchell was going to impress that color guy unless he was Superman. Hope CUSA officials were not watching that game, FIU's chances would be gone with that crowd. A FIU that is playing well of late although not at home, that crowd couldn't have been 500.

  30. and on tonight's espn3 broadcast, the announcers said that only the top 3 get bye's due to ulm not participating... is the sun belt informational staff that stupid that they can't give the announcers the correct info or is everyone else in the world wrong???

  31. No, they were the Sunbelt team. They call most Belt games (including our game vs ASU).

  34. Vitriolic was the basketball coach before JJ. His tenure was disastrous. Most of us would not wish him on our worst enemy. From this thread it appears many posters would like him to replace Doh at SMU.

  35. Right now, if I were rating worst possible places to be an AD it would be roughly this" 1. Idaho 2. NMSU 3. Texas State 4. SJSU 5. UTSA 6. ULM There is a chance that the merry-go-round is going to spin a lot faster and they've got the weakest hold on to it and the greatest danger of being spun off.

  36. This isn't an issue between a private vs. a public school. I could care less a school is one or the other. SMU didn't necessarily coat-tailed with anybody...they've had a decent past, history and they just so happen to be affiliated with the other big boys for most of history. Wherever they are is because they've earned it. If it hasn't been on the field then it's been via funding, commitment, money, past history etc. We don't exactly have this unbelievable tradition of winning and winning at the highest level. We are where we are because of NT's doing...don't go blaming SMU for our own EFF UPS. And again as far as the trust funder, pink polo wearing people you're referring too...you obviously don't know very many students at SMU today...most are the polar opposite of that. Do they exist? Sure they do but I had plenty of classmates at UNT who were the same exact people you described.

  37. ---Gasoline was over $3.90 in Texas in the summer of 2008.... and when I drove to Florida most of the Southern States had it priced at over $4.00 (expensive auto trip).. Then the banking crisis happened in Sept-Oct. along with the Banking bail -outs and it dropped greatly and has never been that high again.... nor has employment... Low gasoline prices don't necessary mean good economy. At the same time in 2008 the stock market started tanking and continued to do so until it went into the 6000's in early 2009.... It began recovering in March of 2009. It is now almost 13,000 again. Also car companies were bailed out in early 2009 and Chrysler has paid that money back, Ford didn't take any...GM still owes some.... and the "Clunker" program increased production and helped keep people working in factories and at car dealerships. That was a much better option that the increased employment that could have resulted and insane amount of unemployment checks that would have been paid. Deal with facts not political party prejudice.... I am not sure some really realize what conservative is... balancing the budget which happened in the 90's was... Doubling the debt it as happened after 2001 isn't. You don't spend more than you take in (for all eight years) and be considered conservative. True the debt is still going up.... well... what has Congress passed to help...? about nothing. The President doesn't pass bills, Congress does, he just signs or vetos them. ...

  39. I don't want to be in the CUSA anymore. The Sun Belt is getting quite strong. Tony Mitchell has given the conference national recognition, MTSU and Denver are turning heads as well in basketball, we look to be a MAJOR force next year. Arkansas State is getting scary good, WKU moving up, UNT also moving up with our beautiful new stadium, FIU/FAU, etc. The Sun Belt has more to offer than CUSA, except for regional opponents. We should raid WAC and grab some of these teams and stick with the Belt.

  40. Our recruiting classes these last 2 years would say different, Scotty didn't start because Doege, Karam and Brewer were all ahead. Being that stacked at QB with scholarship players is why Karam and Young chose to look elsewhere. That being said, Scotty is the real deal and has a helluva arm on him, not the most mobile QB but he will be a great asset to y'alls program.

  41. I am trying to keep my excitement in check and to a low ebb over this possibility but... Scotty, you will not find any school out there where you would be more appreciated than at the University of North Texas as we would all look forward to seeing a favorite son of Denton tossing those highly accurate 'taters for TD's at our Apogee Stadium! OK, I took the meds and I'm fine now. GMG!

  42. I'd like one Scotty Young to go with this recruiting class, please.
    1 point
  43. Really??? Are you sure??? If Young can come in and knock off a senior in his third year of an offense, then he deserves the starting position. I'm not saying we hand it to him, but since when do we turn our nose up at 4* players....correction, 4* quarterbacks? It's a no brainer.

  45. Soccer signed a number of players to NLOI. One of whom is the daughter of a coworker and NT alum: Gabi Ortiz is a midfielder from Austin, Texas who goes to McNeil High School and plays club for Lonestar SC. TopDrawerSoccer.com rates Ortiz as a three-star recruit. She was named Second Team All-District 16-5A as a junior in 2011. Very proud of her. This signing made local news I'll provide a link if I can find it.

  46. To put this all in perspective, I usually keep a goatee because I was attacked by a dog as a child and have scars on my lip. It was a lab mix. I still love labs too! I'm not naive to dog attacks. I'm not unsympathetic to pitbull attacks, or any other dog attack for that matter. Those dogs should be put down. I'm just trying (maybe in vain) to enlighten some on pit bulls. They're not all ferocious animals on the prowl looking for fresh meat or something as the media would have us think. As a matter of fact, my dog is a Mean Green fan!
