  1. One of the reasons I am such a big fan of Tony is because he was the most humble and gracious kid at Pinkston, even being an absolute freak on the court and basically a superstar during his time there. He has always gone out of his way to give thanks to teammates, coaches, etc. You can even see it in his game, as I would argue that he passed the ball way too much in the 1st half last night. After the game he had 2 public comments that tell you a lot about his character: 1. on twitter he call UNT fans the best in America. Tony has posted before that he "loves everyone" and all the support while he was out. that is the kind of young man that he is. I hope UNT can start to fill the Pit more and more as the season continues. 2. Coach Jones had emphasized the importance of playing WKU at home, and Tony took it to heart. Again, because he feels an obligation to others - former players, the program, etc: Head coach Johnny Jones made sure to let Mitchell, Franklin and the rest of UNTs eight newcomers who played know just what an unusual opportunity the game presented. To get them back here and have an opportunity to compete was good, Jones said. They are what we considered the team with the most tradition when we first arrived in the league 11 years ago. Our fans were excited to have them here on our floor. Josh White and Tristan Thompson, who finished their careers as two of the best players in school history a year ago, had just one shot to play WKU at the Super Pit in four years. Mitchell was just one of UNTs players who were motivated by the tale. Coach Jones told us that the old guys like Josh White and Tristan Thompson [almost] never played against them in this gym, Mitchell said. We have to give a shout out to those guys. We did it for you. Just wanted to give Tony some props for his character off the court now that everyone is starting to see what a fantastic talent he is on the court. Keep it up T Mich!

  4. My favorite play was the Alzee steal, then pass to a streaking Tony Mitchell completely uncontested (the WKY players were literally walking back). I'm gearing up for the highlight dunk of the evening... perhaps a 720 or something like that? Instead, Tony fumbles the ball under the basket, picks it back up, looks around for a defender (who are all still on the other side of the court watching), then just throws it down with a simple 2 hand jam. I was laughing so hard... I guess what they say is true: The only person who can stop Tony Mitchell, is Tony Mitchell.

  11. If realignment does not produce something positive for UNT this time around, don't give up. Ultimately if UNT can get enough people who have a connection with UNT and live in the North Texas region to care about the sports programs' representation of them, then UNT cannot be held down. It is within our own control and that is basically what the Neinas report said. Establishing such affinity is something that every university has to do; some are better at it than others. Baylor and TCU didn't start winning because they were winning. They started winning because enough people wanted to see them winning. Our vision and desire is not shared by enough other people yet.

  16. thought this was a cool fact that was in the game notes for the ULM game... Since 06-07 we have the best winning precentage in the belt. Since 2006-07, North Texas has the best win percentage among Sun Belt Conference teams at 65.7 (119-62), and just passed Western Kentucky for the most wins over that span. SBC Records Since ‘06-07 (as of Jan. 10) Team W L % North Texas 119 62 65.7 Western Kentucky 118 69 63.1 South Alabama 104 69 60.1

  21. OK i have to ask: With all this zone talk and outside shooting blah blah. Why is it that people seem to think that our defense is our biggest weakness? This team with its athleticism is a far better defensive team then in past years. Hell if this team learns to shoot and continues to play defense they way they are now they will be damn near unbeatable. Need i remind those complaining that we only gave up 67 points last night. While true that may not be the Alabama defense of the championship game, we should still be able to go undefeated giving up only 67 every game with our talent level. With as much up tempo basketball this team likes to play they are going to give up a few more points because of it.

  23. Skiver, the dilemma you face is two-fold: 1) Until you start coaching, you're still 0-0 and that record might be CBL's, too. 2) All your basketball friends are hiding from the media. Everything you say is contrary to what EVERYONE on this board is seeing on TV: analysts, COACHES, etc...sitting in front of the camera saying "kill the zone with the three". So, unless a national conspiracy is revealed pretty darn quickly, you're not going to get anywhere. But you could very well be into the tragic hero thing...so have at it. (Best wishes in the coaching gig.)

  24. If you're playing a team that's good at shooting, especially from deep, the worst thing you can do is go to a zone. They'll whip the ball around the perimeter until the zone falls behind the ball movement or they'll drive the paint, which will suck in the zone. Either of these tactics open up the outside shot. The zone is designed to keep slashers from getting to the rim or it can make it difficult for post players to get good position down low. It's main weaknesses are the outside shot and defensive rebounding. Basic basketball knowledge.

  30. Uh, I am pretty sure Skiver ran into Harold Edwards at the basketball game Skiver was working tonight (you really think he pulled that name out of the air?) . Not to mention that the other statements regarding what he has been told by many who play and have played the game are in fact correct recitations of their opinions.

  35. With the exception of smu, whose fans could fit into a Taco Cabana parking lot, UNT has the only new college football stadium in Texas. All the others are very old and have simply been gradual add-ons. As basically the only new venue around these parts, it would have been nice if we would have at least worked a parking garage into the master plan. Maybe we did and I'm not aware of it, but it would be a nice thing since our fickle fringe fans (try repeating that 10 times) need every leisurely advantage they can get.

  36. Theres 2 +1's for you... Yes people do pay for them there but I will be shocked when UNT fans will pay over $25 for parking.. People were complaining about paying $15 for a freaking ticket and $10 for parking... I do know a lot of fans that think $250 is dirt cheap for college football season tickets but the majority dont

  37. Yes you win, but if people are complain about paying $10 for cash parking why would they spend $75 or 60 to park in a parking garage... Next please Raider Park will offer fans the luxury of covered parking that is easily accessible to Jones AT&T Stadium via a pedestrian bridge. Wait they have to walk over a pedestrian bridge.... Thats outrageous, it shouldnt be more than 100 ft away from the stadium... Absolutely ridiculous

  38. I can recap every game for you if you like Houston---Great tailgating experience, best yet Indiana -- Great tailgating experience, 2nd best FAU -- Lacking experience because of the weather, but still had a good tailgate ULM-- Homecoming, wasnt bad but due to the homecoming festivites tailgating was a minimum, less than a hour for most WKU -- Tailgating on the hill was weak because 5 sororities had there date parties/ formals MTSU -- Rain game, no one was at the game or tailgate For everyone that complains about the fraternities and sororities, they are the main groups that are involved in Unt athletics.. Yes some would rather enjoy tailgating more than going into the game but who cares, like you said there is 2 things that impact college football games.. The game and the experience, not everyone will go into the game, thats a fact, deal with it. The hill isnt made for everyone, its made for students... Most of the alumni park there cars in the premium lot or at Fouts and set up there tailgate on the grass. Which I would recommend you do. So what if you cant pay for cash parking for premium parking, thats why you can buy them in advance, or if you cant do that become a MGC member.. Oh wait, that starts at $125, if you cant pay $10 to park why would you donate $125... Parking lot vs Baseball field is a choice that the athetic dept is dealing with... What stadium has a freaking parking garage, thats retarted... How are you going to set up a tailgate in a garage??? Dont say the AAC because barely anyone tailgates for Hockey and Basketball games. Name one football stadium that has parking garages

  39. Prediction: Game time will be moved back 30 minutes as WKU will get lost coming to Denton. If we don't win, JJ should be hung from the rafters and required to shout out the score and the play by play of recent highlights thus becoming our center court scoreboard.

  41. Exactly. Big business in this country is such a double-edged sword. And it's made it clear it will sh*t on nostalgia and tradition in the interest of bottom lines and profit margins, almost every singe chance it gets. This is just one example. College athletics is another.

  42. 1. Change how extra points are done at Apogee. If the kicker can shoot a tin can off the field goal post from 30 yards out, plus 60 points, if not, negative 20 points. 2. Have the Rock come in and be "all time" for both sides, so it will be 12 on 11 and the people will get to see the Rock give Blaine Gauteir the Peoples Elbow. 3. Scrap the cheerleaders, and bring in 36 cardboard Bud light girls to take their place. No one will notice. Saves money, and the ecosystem. Win-win. 4. We need to tap in the Necessary Roughness goldmine, I think if we changed our names to the Armadillos the students would show up. Hiring Sinbad as defensive coordinator wouldn't be a bad move either to entice excitement. 5. Apogee Stadium should be domed over and have a permanent snow maker machine next to the scoreboard so we can play indoor snow games every game and get the best of both worlds. I'm just brainstorming, probably only 1 through 3 of these are possible.

  43. I don't think I can give you a completely accurate student viewpoint, but I can tell you what I saw on campus when it wasn't Saturday. First of all, I think that overall, the students did pretty good this year until the last game when they didn't feel like sitting in a cold rain for a game that didn't matter. Unfortunately somebody saw 50 guys getting drunk on the hill during a game, ignoring completely the thousands of students that were in the stadium at the time, and raised hell about it internally and externally, resulting in an article in the North Texas Daily, Lane Rawlins shutting down tailgating for a week, and police presence so prominent I expected to be asked for my papers inside and out of the stadium. The students, as a general rule, don't put much stock into UNT athletics as it is. Creating an atmosphere, perceived or actual, of antagonism from the faculty and alumni, isn't going to bring them in. Believe me, there are plenty of other pursuits when you're between the ages of 18 and 22. Pardon the horrific comparison, but if you want to increase student attendance, you gotta' think like the big tobacco companies. That is to say, acknowledge that you're not going to get organic growth in your existing customer base. You need to get 'em young. Like real young. Attack two fronts here. 1) Incoming freshman. Emphasize the football program like crazy to incoming freshman. Emphasize it at that first flight week. Make them tour the stadium. Have some kind of dorm wars thing at the games. Have dorm sponsored tailgating in the student premium lot. Have the talons go roust them out of bed on Saturday mornings and get their butts over to the stadium. Walk them there, drive them there. Hell, give them piggy back rides. But get them there. And when they're there, welcome them with open arms. Even if they're wearing a burnt orange sweatshirt. Even if they don't stand. Even if they don't know how to wave their arms during the alma mater (something I still have yet to figure out. I guess they don't emphasize that in grad school). 2) Area elementary and middle schools. I was listening to the women basketball team against Texas Tech a while ago. They bussed up a thousand DISD elementary school kids for that game and they had a blast. They were loud. They were nuts. They were 1,000 butts in the seats. Why the hell can't football do this? Is it demeaning? Does it reduce revenue to fill a couple thousand otherwise empty seats? Bring in the kids and make them fans. Hell, pay for the busses to bring them in and make that money up in concession sales. Attack these two fronts and accomplish two things 1) Bring an immediate and statistically significant increase in butt count at each and every home game. 2) Create a future revenue stream of dedicated alumni donors when we are rooting for the Mean Green from six feet under, shouting for the worms to get the hell out of our view.
