  1. Thank you. A calm voice of reason is a sea of snap reactions. Folks, Mac previously wanted this guy, but was turned down before the Bowen hiring. Bowen was offered the opportunity to go to the Big XII at his alma mater (I believe Kansas is his alma mater), and he took it...no firing! Since Coach Mac has a history with Skladany, as Skladany is an excellent recruiter by all accounts, since it is still recruiting season, as UNT needed an experienced coordinator since Bowen left.....well, I see no problems with this hire AT ALL, and I am VERY happy to see it took place quickly. Good for Coach Mac. Welcome Coach Skladany....

  3. I don't think I can give you a completely accurate student viewpoint, but I can tell you what I saw on campus when it wasn't Saturday. First of all, I think that overall, the students did pretty good this year until the last game when they didn't feel like sitting in a cold rain for a game that didn't matter. Unfortunately somebody saw 50 guys getting drunk on the hill during a game, ignoring completely the thousands of students that were in the stadium at the time, and raised hell about it internally and externally, resulting in an article in the North Texas Daily, Lane Rawlins shutting down tailgating for a week, and police presence so prominent I expected to be asked for my papers inside and out of the stadium. The students, as a general rule, don't put much stock into UNT athletics as it is. Creating an atmosphere, perceived or actual, of antagonism from the faculty and alumni, isn't going to bring them in. Believe me, there are plenty of other pursuits when you're between the ages of 18 and 22. Pardon the horrific comparison, but if you want to increase student attendance, you gotta' think like the big tobacco companies. That is to say, acknowledge that you're not going to get organic growth in your existing customer base. You need to get 'em young. Like real young. Attack two fronts here. 1) Incoming freshman. Emphasize the football program like crazy to incoming freshman. Emphasize it at that first flight week. Make them tour the stadium. Have some kind of dorm wars thing at the games. Have dorm sponsored tailgating in the student premium lot. Have the talons go roust them out of bed on Saturday mornings and get their butts over to the stadium. Walk them there, drive them there. Hell, give them piggy back rides. But get them there. And when they're there, welcome them with open arms. Even if they're wearing a burnt orange sweatshirt. Even if they don't stand. Even if they don't know how to wave their arms during the alma mater (something I still have yet to figure out. I guess they don't emphasize that in grad school). 2) Area elementary and middle schools. I was listening to the women basketball team against Texas Tech a while ago. They bussed up a thousand DISD elementary school kids for that game and they had a blast. They were loud. They were nuts. They were 1,000 butts in the seats. Why the hell can't football do this? Is it demeaning? Does it reduce revenue to fill a couple thousand otherwise empty seats? Bring in the kids and make them fans. Hell, pay for the busses to bring them in and make that money up in concession sales. Attack these two fronts and accomplish two things 1) Bring an immediate and statistically significant increase in butt count at each and every home game. 2) Create a future revenue stream of dedicated alumni donors when we are rooting for the Mean Green from six feet under, shouting for the worms to get the hell out of our view.

  4. Five years ago, I had zero plans of looking for a job at 40. Welp, crap happens. I only got hired at the eleventh and a half hour after graduation, mainly because I'm waaay too old to fit the profile of the big firms. Should I find myself in a similar situation when I'm sixty, I hope guys like you aren't the hiring managers.

  5. Your right.. That was a knee jerk reaction. I just hate when fans of other teams want to show up and discuss the loss! I never do that, just seems lame... Sorry buddy.

  6. Sounds like the UCF fans were very upset with Skladany being let go. They think he was made a scapegoat for issues that weren't his doing.

  7. If it had to be, then I like the hire. Skladany's UCF defense was top fifteen nationally in both total defense and scoring defense, and it also takes him out of consideration for Carl Pelini's crew at FAU.

  8. Per Hill CC site, John Odoh has exactly the same number of points and rebounds after 17 games, 232 for an 13.647 average. He has got to be among if not the leader in juco rebounds, but the stat I like best is that he has not attempted one three point shot.

  10. Will you feel the same way when you are in your 60's and are passed over for something for the reason you are giving here?

  11. Watching Skladany's defenses (particularly against the run) at both IState and UCF, I came away with one word for them, and that was "ferocious". He gets his defense to play over their heads talent-wise, and they historically are very very physical and disciplined, much like Bowen was building at UNT. To me, Bowen and Skladany are similar. I like the hire.

  12. First how do you know someone younger applied? Secondly, I wouldn't admit to be willing to violate Federal discrimination laws in a public forum.

  13. I've got an idea to help with student attendance. Each student registered at NT is eligible to win free tuition for the spring semester's classes based on how big a load they were enrolled in during the fall. 15 hours in the fall would mean 15 for free in the spring. The student must be present to win and would have to scan their ID before kickoff. The drawing would be held between the 3rd and 4th qtr. This would cover tuition only. No fees, no housing, no meal plan. And if the winner is graduating and not continuing on in grad school, they win the cash equilivant, or something similar.

  15. I don't think Ricky Rubio is eligible to hold political office in the US. But, I bet he'd have some pretty slick assists to the President if he were the VP. Dude's a baller!

  16. Unless it's an issue with his previous transcripts before he came here. What you did was look up what it means when someone is arrested for murder and then tried to explain that everyone arrested is a murderer. If it is that and we don't have all of those facts (and it appears no one had the facts until right before the season, which would explain the timing of his eligibility), then you are basically yelling at JJ for not knowing what anyone knew. I wish he was playing, but I wouldn't particularly enjoy having MTSU's record for now and finding out none of it will count later because of whatever happened at Grambling.

  19. Its a better thing for schools like Oklahoma, Oklahome State, Boise State, and TCU that they did agree with me. Bill Snyder also began coaching at KSU well before he was retirement age, so that fact that he came back in his 70's is transfere a bit different than going to a completely new situation (that you aren't going to care as much about).

  20. Nice to see you adding substance to this thread. Thanks for that. What do you think you are accomplishing by continually doing this sort of thing? Really, just wondering? Why would a fan want to screw up a decent thread with this sort of thing time and time again?

  21. If he was under contract then kansas would have to seek permission to speak with Bowen , correct ? If so , I hope we negotiated a home & home with KU while we were on the phone

  26. Keep in mind that hiring an assistant coach is usually not a "we" decision. It's a head coach decision. Our head coach has been around this game at this level for a very long time. He probably has a good idea of who he would hire after Skladany's replacement was hired away.

  27. "......must be present to win" absolutely necessary! great idea. However, much like a scholarship, I would expect the funding would have to be there - where would the funding come from? Ideas?

  28. Seems like a decent hire. Moving quickly here seems prudent, especially if you know who you want.

  29. Sounds like a good idea. Give one of these away at every game. Would cost about $15,000 for the whole season if no fees were included. I bet we'd see a nice boost.

  30. really? Because the republicans are completely innocent of that. I could post several things they are doing that with that I've heard just today, but I'll go with my favorite and remind you of the death panel idiocy to serve as example.

  34. Really bringing up the death penalty, that was 25 years ago... We all know you hate SMU but you keep on saying the same things over and over. Who cares how they count there attendence, thats not the reason why they are upgrading conferences... THEY WIN FOOTBALL GAMES and more are national recognized than a lot of other schools. The way we will upgrade to a better conference is by winning football games... If we dont win games we wont move.. You dont get a promotion by doing poorly...

  35. Its amazing how people go crazy over Tony performance tonight... Dont get me wrong, it was great but how are yall in awww of one performance, Chris Jones has been over looked by all of yall all season( and his whole bball career) ... Hes been the guy on the stat sheet all year and almost put up 2 triple doubles in 2 straight games. I havent seen one thread about it... This is not a one man team, this is 14 players getting in the groove... Tony doesnt make the team, its 14 players that make a team, He's great for the program but dont underlook the players that make him better

  38. I know his record and coaching were terrible but I do feel he made a solid contibution in our getting a new stadium. He didn't build it but he did give his help at fundraising and program promoting even if the results on the field were awful.

  39. I am a jerk, but I could care less if Patton practices with the team, he could have been used this year for sure but he did not do his job in the class room. Now will he be here next year?? Who knows if he can actually get his %&*# together in the classroom, otherwise he is a wasted scholarship.

  40. Was it a mistake to hire Todd Dodge, even taking into consideration the crippling salary constraints and dilapidated facilities? Probably. Did the person making that hire stand bull headed and steadfastly by his mistake, utterly refusing to remedy the situation the very moment it was financially viable to do so? Was there immediate and dramatic improvement in all things UNT football thereafter? Hayden Frye is long gone and I'm completely happy to have Rick steering this boat. I just hope nobody has informed him of the vacancy at Southern Miss. The wrinkled hundred dollar bill mentality around here would likely be enough to send me back home five minutes ago if I were him. Even if Southern Miss weren't in a better conference with a better program and better fan base. It couldn't have gotten worse than Todd Dodge. It can certainly get much, much worse than Rick. *Edited because phone autocorrect

  41. VY was a pro-bowl QB who led the Titans to double digit wins once upon a time... I know, seems crazy, right? Also, I would say Tebow "has the Broncos in the second round" a truckload less than Von, Elvis and those sumbitches, but that's just me.
