  2. If it had to be, then I like the hire. Skladany's UCF defense was top fifteen nationally in both total defense and scoring defense, and it also takes him out of consideration for Carl Pelini's crew at FAU.

  7. Just my humble opinion, but if we were in a playoff system I think 'bama would be winning it all anyways. If you (not necessarily YOU, UNTfan) like the idea of a playoff system because "everyone gets a chance", why does it matter whether 'bama won the division or not?

  8. If you lose to Iowa State you don't deserve a shot at the national championship. These two teams were clearly above the rest of the competition. There isn't a chance in hell OSU would have scored 30 on Bama.

  9. I know his record and coaching were terrible but I do feel he made a solid contibution in our getting a new stadium. He didn't build it but he did give his help at fundraising and program promoting even if the results on the field were awful.

  13. Two 7-5 seasons does not equate to "winning football games." The only reason SMU is moving up is because they are perceived as a somewhat storied program and have A LOT of money!

  14. Temple had announced that they were a football-only candidate for the Big East. They feel that moving basketball from the Atlantic 10 to CUSA would be less than a lateral move. I'm sure that they would move all sports to the Big East if asked but unofficially have stated that they would stay in the MAC if not admitted to the Big East. So yeah, they would be a worthy candidate but is it what they want? FIU is in no way worthy of an advancement at this time. Florida International has only been playing FBS football for seven years and has an overall record of 29-56 (.341). The last two have been their only winning seasons. Their stadium only seats 23,500 and being a converted soccer stadium the majority of the seats are in the end zones. Their attendance average last year was their best...18,400. Their best attended home game was also last year when more than 22,000 saw Duke upend the Panthers. They also had a 20K+ home crowd against UCF. They are also joined at the hip with Florida Atlantic, who previously had the better record and attendance. To their credit, they are a very large university with good academics located in the #16 TV market.

  15. When SMU was invited into the WAC and then CUSA, it had 78 years of affiliation to the Southwest Conference burnishing its credentials. It also had TCU, Rice and Houston in its corner because of their past conference relationships and geographic proximity. UNT, for many sad reasons, has none of that. So we're required to prove more if we want to move up. We proved we could get a stadium built. Now we must prove we can fill it in the Belt.

  17. Here's my take on the FCS thing. Every year I've been here, the first game of the season has always been really well attended. Curious new students, alumni happy for football season to start, eternal hope. Then every year we get it handed to us at the first game and the curious go back into hibernation. Beating up on Texas Southern certainly doesn't help out with whatever the football equivalent of RPI is, but it showcases a victory for the people who are coming out to see the team for the first time. Also, after the team gets used as a turf mop by LSU, it wouldn't hurt to have a less physically taxing game to recover. I've always wondered what long-term physical effects it has on the team to get utterly manhandled by the big boys. I imagine a good number of them are still pretty beat up by the time they get to conference play.

  18. So, if they lost the South for a generation, explain very liberal Jimmy Carter's success in the south a scant 8 years later. It is propaganda spread by the democrat party that repulicans were against civil rights, so that is why the south went to republicans in 2000. Such sound logic that is. Even though it was a wing of their own party that was fighting HARD against civil rights, but never mind that. Look past it,. Never mind that Abraham Lincoln was a republican and fought democrats tooth and nail to get rid of slavery. Just look past it. Former Clansmen Robert Byrd in your party? Celebrate his "enlightenment" and pontificate on how couragous it is for him to change. But, lord forbid a republican smoked a joint in college or, more recently, even suggest that the black community should demand jobs over food stamps because that means he is a RACIST!! This is how the propoganda machine works. You can see it in Coffee's posts on politics when he presents things that are completely opinion based as facts. I don't blame him, as that is the playbook he has been taught. Say something, repeat it often and loudly, and soon people will begin to believe you. .

  19. This past football season was my first one spent actively checking in on GMG pretty much every day. I love the community here, but there was one aspect of the 2011 season that was a nad-kicking in every one of the home game discussions...attendance. What I'm proposing is a series of topics here on what we can do to increase attendance. Forget about the would and the could and the should...we all pretty much dumped our opinions on one another enough last Fall. I know that you can't have this discussion without some opinions being involved, but what I'd like to do is try to keep it focused more on the reality that attendance isn't where we would like it to be and what realistic measures can be taken to address that issue. I'd like to focus the discussion on three areas: steps that can be taken to increase student attendance, steps that can be taken to increase alumni attendance, and steps that can be taken to increase attendance from Denton and the nearby North Texas community (think Little Elm, Keller, Lewisville, etc.). I'd like to steer clear of the dead-end canards like "the Sun Belt sucks" and "we need to play more home/home series with Big 12 teams" and "UTSA is more baller than we are." There's nothing any of us other than RV and the university leadership can do about those things; figuring out some ideas that we could implement with whatever we have to work with is my goal. I'll kick off the three post series tomorrow with some ideas for increasing student attendance. This post has been promoted to an article

  20. Watching Skladany's defenses (particularly against the run) at both IState and UCF, I came away with one word for them, and that was "ferocious". He gets his defense to play over their heads talent-wise, and they historically are very very physical and disciplined, much like Bowen was building at UNT. To me, Bowen and Skladany are similar. I like the hire.

  21. It makes the most sense if Bowen was hired first by KU. In Bowen vs Sklandany I think we come out ahead.
    1 point
  22. It was probably in the works for a couple of weeks. If we lost him to anyone it would be KU, he's lived in Lawarence his whole life. Hope Coach Skladany has the same drive and passion that Coach Bowen has, it's hard to replace the intangibles

  23. I've got an idea to help with student attendance. Each student registered at NT is eligible to win free tuition for the spring semester's classes based on how big a load they were enrolled in during the fall. 15 hours in the fall would mean 15 for free in the spring. The student must be present to win and would have to scan their ID before kickoff. The drawing would be held between the 3rd and 4th qtr. This would cover tuition only. No fees, no housing, no meal plan. And if the winner is graduating and not continuing on in grad school, they win the cash equilivant, or something similar.

  26. Well, considering the argument was that Johnson's civil rights legislation led to the South turning republican (with the insinuation that Republicans are the party for bigots and the south is the home of bigots), let's look at Jimmy Carter's views on civil rights legislation: In 1973, established MLK day in Georgia, demanded that picture of MLK be hung in the Georgia State Capitol building. Not exactly far right stances against civil rights. My god, how did the south (you know, those stupid rednecks) ever vote him into office? Carter wanted a national health care system and to drastically cut defense spending. If you want to call that middle of the road in 1976, you must be on a left lane only road. People vote the economy. Period. If the economy is in the same shape a year from now, Pres. Obama will most likely not be President (would be a slam dunk if Romney weren't the current frontrunner). Everything else, we will no, no, no, no, never, never, never, never agree upon.

  27. Wouldn't a playoff system do that as well?

  28. You know, I like your logic. If UNT had been able to, we would have hung 40+ on them too. Come to think of it, any of LSU's opponents - had they been able to - would have hung 40+ on them. But LSU didn't score either. You know why they looked timid and afraid? Maybe because they were facing 'bama. And you're automatically assuming OSU wouldn't have shriveled the same way. 'bama fans - along with the national media - have been saying all season that this defense could be the best they ever had. That's saying a lot given 'bama's lore. What kind of lore has OSU established playing ping pong ball in the gimmickie Big XII? The same Big XII that has spent nearly a decade failing to trump the beast that is SEC. That game was terrific. 'bama's defense was terrific.

  29. Im not buying the structural innability excuse for one moment. The Super Pit's roof was more than likely over built as would be expected to hold against structural strain due to time and gravity, weather of all kinds, and it had a center board for many many years up and until a few years back. So there should be no reason it cant happen again. And I believe all facilities fall under the same director of facilities for the university(Charles Jackson). If there's a need for improvements for the Super Pit for all uses, and there is, it can and will be done. But someone has to request for it to be done and it has to be in the budget before hand. That may have already happened? It may not? It would be interesting to find out what, if anything is in the future budget plans? Rick This post has been promoted to an article

I've got my fingers crossed for the Mean green, but am guessing that however the chips fall, Coach Mac will have a good class signed when all is said and done! This is cfertainly not Coach mac's first rodeo! He's got plenty of cattle to go with that hat of his!

  33. definitely was a dominating performance... not as good as the first game drama-wise though, would have been nice to see LSU at least compete in this game... but yeah, i have no problem where teams don't have to score a combined 65 points to determine the game

  34. It's difficult to say OSU would have lost to Bama (or LSU) since the two teams didn't play each other.

  35. A large hanging scoreboard suspended from the roof. Even if it comes at the cost of stuctural stability. I'm a Vikings fan, so I'm familiar with the roof collapsing. Also, more dancers is a + Better floor seating is a + But that pep band.. Ugh. They need to have a more fanfare-esque performance. Seriously, change the way they do everything! And why are they always wearing blue jeans? We need to get them some spats, and green zoot suits. Like a REAL pep band would wear... You know, since we're talking upgrades.

  36. No school in an AQ conference which agreed to go into the BCS "deserves" anything. No matter which year or which team is crying about who is in the national title game...they all agreed to participate in it. And, they've made millions. Even schools who crap along in AQ conferences and don't win get paid. "Deserves" baloney. Be happy to be included in the bigger bowl pay pool every year and shut up.

  43. Could Tebow be one of those players who look "wrong", but who just find a way to win when it counts? Don't know...too early to tell...and could he ever "fix" that throwing motion...given a couple of more years in the NFL? You watch the guy and you think...what? How ca he play QB in the NFL...much less be a starter, but the guy has the Broncos in the divisional round of the playoffs. I seriously doubt that the "magic" continues and that this is the end of the season for the Broncos, but stranger things have happened...heck, they beat Pittsburgh (beat up Pitt and all that). Don't know, but what I do know is that Romo and the 'Boys are sitting home watching while this kid keeps his team in it when it counts the most. Not only can that not be said of the Cowboys, there are several other teams with "better QB's" sitting home right now as well. Along with all the so-called "experts" I don't get it, but the Broncos play on.....
