  1. Looks good but they missed some opportunities for speakers and topics. How about: Kram1 "The Power of Eternal Optimism" Plumm Mean Green "The Effectiveness of fonts and colors in Written Communications" Silver Eagle "The Evolution of Marching Band styles in Texas and Beyond" I am sure there are others that I missed.

  2. And once again (I just know that current and recent Green Brigade members hate this) I present to you examples of what college pageantry and showmanship look like. Apogee and North Texas fans deserve something like this. And BTW, if you just add a little cape on the back, these unis were just like the GB uni's of the 60's.... Wisconsin doesn't do a bad job either..... ...not to be outdone or out-pageantried(?), the Michigan Band... Pageantry, it's what gets the fans into the stadium early and pumped for the game.

  4. Shoss, your point is pretty well correct. Good football will draw a whole lot more folks to a game than a good band will. But Ohio State and Wisconsin have top notch football teams, and bands that get the crowd excited to boot. I don't see why a good football team and a professional level marching band are mutually exclusive.

  6. Any time I hear people bring up the constitution and the role of government I generally just dismiss them as absolutists. I mean when the Constitution was written having an anti-slavery view was seen as liberal or even extremist. In 1910 it was "progressive" to want women's suffrage. To try and identify where the framers and politicians of that era fit on a modern day political scale would just be impractical.

  9. This is what I mean by brick walls. UNT90 is describing it as "socialized", yet Obamacare didn't even include a public option for buying health care coverage. The public option was a compromise that was suggested by Republicans in the early 90's as an answer to Hillarycare. Republicans. In the early 1990's. Obamacare doesn't even go that far. We have two parties: The Democrats which are the centrist party, and the Republicans which are the right/far-right party.

  10. I would seriously doubt that Coach Dodge would have any hard feelings about UNT to the extent that he would not help a player of his get a D-1 scholarship. The man does try to help his players move on to the next level as has been seen in his years at SLC HS. The guy is a professional and will certainly act in a professional manner. While some think local players will not come to UNT, I do think there is every indication that that may be changing a bit...slowly, and there will probably never be a flood of locals heading to UNT...there is no reason to think Coach Dodge would not help a player land that D-1 scholarship to UNT. I wish Coach Dodge well in his next position. Be it at the HS or College level.

  11. Because you've offered so much yourself? Why should I have to defend who I'm voting for? Should everyone that posts in this thread or this forum do so? All I'm doing is posting a lot of predictions on the Republican primary, I'm not here to debate about who is better for the country or the economy or whatever else.

  12. I love the Green Brigade, have since I was a youngster and remember great marching routines and one where they looked like and acted out a working typewriter. The drumline was always awesome and performed for the crowd, and the Talons were one of the coolest groups in the stands with these big cowbells. Scrappy drove around the track in a lime green go cart, etc... I also think the band should always be in uniform. Sorry, but t-shirts and khaki's looks bad. Now, regarding the heat, etc... why can't a uniform be made out of a tech material like Nikes' Dri-Fit or Addidas Clima Cool? With the technology of today, having band members march around in the heat in wool suits, or whatever they are made of, is ridiculous. Bring back the spats! kaleb, don't let a few comments from a very few on here discourage you. You guys always sound awesome, but I do agree that games being considered lab time for teaching high school kids ridiculous. And, if it is to be used as a training exercise, then strive to learn and eventually teach the HS kids some routines that would far exceed anything done before.

  13. Let me preface by saying I agree that you guys sound loud and the musical talent of the band is second to none. However, the casual football fan can't tell a difference between how loud and awesome the Green Brigade sound and how loud and awesome most any other college band sounds. And generally, they don't care how precisely the music is played, so long as it's loud. The fans don't go to a band concert and football game just so happens to be played at the same time and place. The pageantry of the band, and their performance in pre-game, in the stands, and at halftime, is part of what makes game-day, game-day. That being said, some extra pageantry and spirit would only seem to further your lead as the best band in the country. And, it would help make game-day a more enjoyable experience for the fans that are there for the football game, and not the band concert.

  14. Agreed, the only way we are going to get an invite to the Big XII is if the Athletic Department is run by fans on the internet. We should continue to b*tch about everything they do, then tell them how they should have done it in the first place. We are never going to be a conference with the Dallas Cowboys unless we raise our standards around here.

  15. Outstanding video. BTW, what's with all the dramatic music in the background? Isn't the commentary and video clips enough? Or is this another example of the importance of.........pageantry.

  16. If none of that was meaningful to you when you went to Ohio State games then this thread is not meant for you. And I don't understand why you are still posing on the subject. But the vast majority of fans (derived from the word fanatic) want and need the show. You know, North Texas is approaching 100 years of having organized football (1914 was the first year), and I think that our school, alumni, students and sports teams deserve to have even half of the pageantry and traditions that the schools we have been discussing in this thread take for granted. It's time for our only tradition, apathy, to go away. And it's time for our great musical organization to stop treating North Texas football games as lab time for future High School band directors.

  17. Romney wins by 8 votes. Even though the Iowa Caucas has predicted only 50 percent of Republican primary winners over the years, tonight shows you why you don't count anyone out. I know Santorum doesn't have much money to compete but seeing his campaign launch to the front tonight out of nowhere was fun to watch. Rick

  22. With renewals coming up, it sure would be beneficial if it was communicated to MGC members that it is being worked on. That's my point. You and I don't know whether it is or isn't. It sure would help to know.

  23. The earliest reference I can find is March 1, 2011, when the full schedule was released. But if I'm not mistaken, I believe (and the MGS article indicates) that the Houston game was announced before the full schedule. Yes, it's early, and everything may end up being fine, but the point is, IF we have one OOC home game, that is unacceptable. Arguments ensued when others tried to justify or make excuses for having just 5 home games. I believe the difference between this year and last is the fact that we already have a full commitment of OOC games, where last year we only had 3 at this point (until we scheduled Houston). 24. Question for the flipping-outers: When did we find out that the UH game was going to be moved last year? If it was before January 3rd, 2011, then feel free to continue flipping-out. If it was after that, Chill! It's really too early in the offseason for this kind of reaction, IMHO.

  25. Right, because here at UNT, you have to call the AD to get answers to basic questions? Is that how it is suppose to work? That is some really small time thinking.

  26. I have no issues with scheduling Texas Southern. But just 5 home games should be unacceptable no matter what even if we were still in Fouts.

  27. It is about having a high standard and sticking to it. 6-games should be the standard, and the bare minimum. I do not care if we play an FCS team every year at home, in fact, I'm 100% fine with it. But if we are going to have only 1 OOC home game, it needs to be an FBS team. ULM gets freaking Baylor at home. Playing less money games will also help attendance and generate revenue. Ever notice how we always seem to have a money game the week before a home game. The last time we opened the season at home was against TCU many, many years ago. Think that hurts a little bit? I could not care any less if we never play a BCS team again. They need us more than we need them. The Athletic Department needs to make a policy that we will enter no contracts with BSC-AQ teams without a return game (2 for 1 would be fine). Who gives an F who it pisses off. We deserve that sort of standard, and frankly, bold action from the Athletic Department. We are scheduling money games 8 years in advance with no return. Look at UTSA, Texas State, and even other Sun Belt Schools. Where is the belief and higher standard from NT? In 2014 we only have 5 home games as well, and a plethora of money games over the next decade. I'm not usually one to get upset like this, but this is a much bigger deal than some are making it.

  28. You're kidding right? The current schedule is unacceptable, and if the Athletic Department does not solve the problem come next September, they should be embarrassed. Texas Southern is fine. I like that we are playing an easy game. But that being the only OOC home game is absurd. I don't care if it's effing Buffalo. Just get a another FBS team in here and stop scheduling freaking money games with no return....Period. I'm waiting for the SID people on here to give an explanation, or the Athletic department to at least say they realize there is a problem and are looking at options. If it pisses of LSU or KSU or UH, who cares. What should be done is what is in the best interest of our fanbase and the building of the program. There is still time to fix this, but anyone that thinks it isn't a problem is lying to themsevles.

  29. It will be interesting to see how our OOC schedule plays out as we continue to build our program, and to see what fans want. Do we want higher profile OOC opponents? Will we want to act "big time" and schedule cream puffs? I mean, that's what the LSUs of the world do. When do our egos become so full of poo that we want to start imitating Big Bad Sooner Daddy and laugh as we destroy our OOC home-ies 100-2 each and dispute what uniform we can bring in each game!

  31. Well at your age you tend to forget things & not be able to hear as well i kid i kid Like I said earlier , I'm sure we are waiting on the Houston situation to see what our options are and I'm sure RV has already been in contact with a number of teams about coming here next season. If not , I think it's a dissappointment. You don't ask students to pass a fee , MGC members to pledge thousands of $ for club level seats and build a awesome mutli million dollar stadium to use it only 5 times a year vs some of the worst teams in all of college football. Let's just wait and see what happens (hopefully not too long because some of us have to plan vacations far in advance) Isn't this great , only 2 days into the new year and this board is already in meltdown! Can't wait to see what the HOT topic is for next week!!

  36. Predictions: Romney - 25% Santorum - 23% Paul - 21% Gingrich - 14% Perry - 9% Bachmann - 5% Huntsman - 2% Others - 1% Bachmann might drop out, although she doesn't need much money to continue just being a loudmouth buffoon. Huntsman will rebound nicely in New Hampshire. Santorum will claim victory as the highest conservative but won't win any other states. Newt might linger along and win South Carolina but will ultimately drop out before Super Tuesday in March. Perry will do the same but not win any states.

  37. The price would not be the same for a 5 game season as a six game season. Whoever doesn't understand that just doesn't understand basic math. And, saying that 6 games is the standard is not promising a 6 game schedule each and every year. While we would all like to see a 6 game home schedule each and every year, and while RV is trying to make that the standard, it is possible that we will not see it each and every year in order to get future accommodating schedules, etc. This could all be for naught if UNT finds a new conference with enough teams. It is in every one's best interest to have a six game home schedule. Why anyone would think RV is not working on just this issue is certainly naive or just looking to find something else to complain about since it is the off season.

  38. Paul would draw the same tiny vote that he has drawn before running as a libertarian. Trump would draw less, and drop out once he got the publicity he was seeking (so he wouldn't be embarrassed by the actual vote).

  39. I hate threads like this. I start typing arguements, then I get frustrated and have to stop. I think I'm just going to say this: The band is loud, and they sound awesome. You're welcome. People should stop complaining about the good things that are here, and start realizing that complaining about the best marching band in the nation makes you look silly. I loved my time in the GB. Though we don't have all the pomp and circumstance that other bands have, other bands don't play as awesome as we do.

  40. Why even have elections when according to some no Republican has a chance? In my opinion, what I think many card carrying Republicans should worry about is someone sucking away votes from the Republican presidential candidate allowing Obama to win a second term. Both Ron Paul (who has said at this time has not ruled out running as an independent) or Donald Trump (who has said would run as an independent if the GOP puts out a crappy candidate) have left the door open to run as independents for the presidential election.

  44. First off - Happy New Years to all! Quick reminder - the Houston game was moved to 2011 in order to have a recognizable opponent for the stadium opening. This allowed our inaugural season to contain both Houston and Indiana (in OOC) at home this year. That hurts the 2012 schedule but you have to weigh the pros vs the cons. We moved that game and were able to open the stadium in week 2 rather than week 4. I believe that our OOC home opponents have been pretty solid over the last few years: Tulsa (2008), Ohio (2009), Army (2009), Rice (2010), Kansas State (2010), Houston (2011), Indiana (2011). I am sure that RV is trying to get another team into Denton but I don't want him to move away from his scheduling philosophy to make it happen. We need wins in 2012 and if that means one less game at home, I am ok with that. As for UTSA's schedule... Most of those game were scehduled when UTSA planned to move up as an Independent. When the WAC invite came along, it was a perfect alignment of the stars. Half of those games get cancelled if they start winning. As it stands - they are an easy win on the road and it is a great opportunity for a school to recruit that area without risking a loss. In the past, the only option they had was Austin. I still would like to see them invited to the Belt. It is very impressive that they were able to schedule that many games with recognizable teams and their attendance was outstanding for Year 1.
