  1. That was a whole lotta typing just to proclaim that you're not going to anymore games. Thanks Brah!

  3. "The $79 million venue had a huge economic impact on the region while it was under construction and will allow UNT to bring in higher-profile nonconference opponents. The Mean Green played host to both Indiana and Houston in the stadium’s debut campaign." How true. Can't wait for that OOC opener against Texas Southern next season.

  5. Most of you here know that I'm not much of a fan of the sport of basketball. This is in no way, shape, or form related to UNT or any other entity. The sport itself just carries no interest for me. But I got a free ticket to Saturday's game, so I went. And I had a blast. Still don't like the sport of basketball, but listening to Tasty's remarks on male grooming kept me in stitches the whole time. UNT does have its own special brand of trash talking, and it's as witty as I've ever heard. The band members present were a special breed of zany that the much more serious Mean Green Brigade is not. The tuba players were chasing each other through the stands mid song. Johnny Jones can make a ref listen to him without throwing chairs, and it's really, really funny to watch the expressions on the refs' faces when Johnny calls them out on something. Tony Mitchell is not human and I think his wing span must be approaching nine feet. The UNT dancers are at a much, um, closer view than at Apogee. So tomorrow begins four months of 9 bajillion hour weeks in a windowless basement for tax season, so no more fun for me, but I sure did enjoy the one game I made this year. My name is absolutely not oldguystudent, and I endorse your attendance at UNT basketball. Edit: I posted this in the football forum, didn't I? Crap. Mods please move this.

  7. 6'9" Tim Owens is averaging 5 points a game for Troy. I don't know who else they played at post. 6'6" Ray Chambers? 6'4" Steven Cunningham? There's a reason that Troy likes shooting 3 pointers. And it's not because Niko is an insurmountable inside presence. Don't get me wrong, I like Niko's active hands, but if he's going to be our best paint defender, I'm concerned.

  12. What none of these pundits seem to realize is that the "big guys" need the "little guys" because without them; they are no longer "big guys". It is much easier I guess to pontificate the elimination of the "little guys" than to come up with a system that actual works and fosters competition. The upper tier schools could not play the lower tier schools now. Just don't schedule them and fill your oc slots with other upper tier schools. Funny, they rather pay for the guarantee games than face equal competition every week. The scenario of eliminating. all non-big conference teams is easy to plot. A new underclass of schools is established and someone down the line come up with the bright idea of getting rid of them too. This continues until you are left with an NFL equivalent of a couple dozen teams that finally establish rules to increase competition because there are still teams that can't compete with the mega budgets universities.

  13. I am going to start this off by simply saying that the NCAA Basketball Tournament is the best sporting playoff in the country and its not close. I particulary love the College World Series, as well, since it follows the same pattern as college basketball. Unfortunately, football will never work like this because of the money (and media coverage) involved. But both of those sports are much different animals than football--and its why a new separation will occur again. I still think that if your school plays in front of an average of 50k then you shouldn't be on the same level as schools that average 25k or less. There are about 40-50 programs in the country that really should just get a classification of NFL-Lite, based on resources and fanbase, as well as tradition. They already get all of the attention from fans and media on a national level. Somehow, I imagine that 50k line in attendance (or at least 40K) will somehow become a new line in the sand.

  16. Guess what Skiver. Troy was in a zone most of the game. We had a ton of open looks from 3 point range b/c that is what a zone allows and we knocked down 9 three's until they finally had to match up with us man to man.

  18. The Interstate Batteries CEO is Norm Miller, UNT alum. I emailed Rick V. a few years ago to see if Norm had been contacted about Interstate being a major sponsor of North Texas athletics and never got a reply. I've always been surprised that Interstate hasn't had more of a presence at UNT with Norm's relationship to the university. I've heard Norm speak in person and he speaks very positively of his time at North Texas. Perhaps they are content with their NASCAR presence.

  21. Seriously guys? We are not talking about the die hard donors. We know that we have a small core of those who are not going anywhere. Key word is small. If you want to expand that core, you have to get them to the games in the first place to show what you have. If you want to get them to the games, you have to give them a reason to come. The Houston game was a great selling opportunity for the AD staff, as was the Indiana game. Texas Southern?? The casual, barely interested fan could give a crap about that. And you follow that up with 5 home games and Texas freaking Southern? How do you market this schedule to new MGC members. Please, tell me, because I would love (and need) to know. It's about expanding (or at least trying to expand) your fan base. This schedule makes that task virtually impossible. Like I said, changes can still be made and may even be underway as we speak. It would greatly benefit the AD to announce any changes ASAP once they are made.

  22. The first half, we played the same inconsistent basketball we've been playing, so I don't even want to talk about it. Actually I don't even want to talk about most of the 2nd half. All I want to talk about is the 1st 8(EIGHT) minutes. We scored 25 points in that span. That was by far the best stretch of basketball we have had this season. Like I have been saying all season, all we need to do is push the ball up the court. We are simply too athletic to play a half-court game. There is nobody in the entire Sun Belt that could even CONSIDER running with us. Ked being out hurts our depth, but with the depth we have, we should be pressing ALL THE TIME, and not just "when we have to." We have 10 guys(CJ, Al, Jordan, Roger, TM, Norris, Walton, Holmen, Niko, and Alonzo) that play. When you have a 10-man rotation, there is no reason not to press. Nobody in the Sun Belt can even think about touching our athleticism, and it is about time we start taking advantage of that. Also, Johnny needs to tailor the half-court offense more towards the players we have now. We're running the same thing as last year, even though the players we have now have a completely different skill-set. We finally have a PURE POINT GUARD. The offense should run through him at all times when he's on the floor(and it never does). The majority of his assists come on the break, and it's a shame, because if we used him more in the offense, we would be much better, and he'd average more assists.

  25. If you want a paint defender 4 inches taller than Franklin, you should be wanting Alonzo Edwards and Tony Mitchell. We get it -- If you think Franklin plays out of position because of his height, Niko and Holmen also play out of position because of theirs. Some people have the tools to play at their height in the paint, and others don't.

  26. Yes hes undersized, OSU tried to make him into a guard but hes not a guard, he plays the 3/4... Roger doesnt get pushed around like Niko out there, Niko is a rag doll on Defense... Ill take a undersize but strong forward that knows how to play the game, than a guy whos taller but seems more lost on defense than the Kardashians in a economics class.

  27. how many 6'4'/6'5'players do you know who consistently play the post? He does excellent but is still undersized. I suppose he is channeling his inner Barkley which is not a bad thing.

  28. Im not sure, its probably been taking them longer because of fall semester was in session but hopefully it wont take too long. From what I can remember, Its supposed to save the school on cost of water and amount used along with other "eco-friendly" upgrades around campus. I had a class at gateway so I walked by it every week, just cant remember the rest. I would like for athletics to get the ball rolling on the new track facility, more importantly baseball though. It would be nice if they built a new super pit where Fouts is with the upgrades that cant be done with the current one. -Being OWNED by the athletic department -Suites -able to host hockey games(current format at Superpit cant fit a hockey rink, UNT hockey team has to play in Farmers Branch, Grapevine, Frisco. They have only one loss this season when they split with A&M. Looking to head to Regionals this year) -team store -updated video boards, center hanging video board(current super pit roof can not support one) -expandable,collapsible seats to host concerts, tournaments, & events for extra revenue -updated locker rooms, training facilities I could go on with the potential improvements but its something worth thinking about because The Superpit is not ideal for upgrades with all the concrete and layout, being owned by the University, ADA compliance issues that would have to be addressed if we did renovate.TBH, The Super Pit is not Cameron Indoor so not too many people will be sad to see it replaced with an new facility. North Texas is the best in DFW and deserves it after a good run in the Tournament.

  30. Then whatever pony you talked to is an idiot. Head over to our boards and you'll see most of us talking about what we can to do market ourselves not just in the country, but in the freakin' DFW area too. We were a recognized brand in the 80s and before then, but most people in their teens to their mid-30s dont know anything about SMU unless they're from Dallas. Anyway, I know I always enter these threads to read up on what UNTers are saying, and I end up replying to something that has little to do with the OP, sorry for further derailment of the conversation! For what it's worth, I hope UNT manages to benefit from the latest conference reshuffling.

  33. There is no excuse for the crappy scheduling. We have a brand new stadium and we get freaking Texas Southern as our only OOC home game? The Athletic Department needs to hold themsevles to a higher standard, and believe that NT deserves better. I call BS on the exucse that this years schedule is due to getting a good schedule at home last year. Mean Green Club members deserve an explanation as to why we are taking a huge step backwards. There is still time to fix this, and at this point I still have faith that the right moves will be made. If we absolutely cannot back out of LSU or UH, peace out KSU. By the way? WTF is with all of the money games in the future and no return games to Denton?

  36. When did his man score on him yesterday? because Franklin was blown by on multiple occasions. He hedged his screens and recovered every time denying his man the ball. He also brought down 10 boards and yes... passed the ball incredibly well for a big man.
    1 point
  37. Why...? Who is better then him in the post? Mitchel? Mitchel needs to be playing the 3 and creating his own shot. Niko can rebound, box out, defend in the paint, hustle up the court, create his own shot, drive it to the hole, knock down the three, and even more impressively pass better then just about anyone on our team. Also where are all the Walton haters? He showed up tonight and he still hustles.

  38. I know it's appealing to schedule big names schools week in and week. We did that in 1995 and it was awful. The team was demoralized and the injuries mounted quickly. We just need to win the games we play and hopefully get into a better conference. On another note I read that we are playing SMU every year from 2013 to 2018. Any validity to this? (I read it in an email) If it's true, it's a great start.
    1 point
  39. I don't disagree with you on some points. But let's not let facts get in the way of emotion. I will go through them just like you did and then we can agree to disagree. Houston and K State are return games of series - both team have already traveled to Denton. The return Houston game "would" have been in 2013 but we moved the date to accomodate the stadium opening. LSU is a payday game, we play one of those a year and there is no secret to that. Instead of bitching about it, how about we go out and win it? As for reworking the schedule at the "last minute" (in the offseason) - we had a coaching change take place. So a new coach is coming in and the department knows we are going to be rebuilding. How do you maximize the marketing? Get the fans in early before the losses pile up. That is basic marketing. If the team had been winning and mature with Dodge at the helm, the schedule probably wouldn't have to be fiddled with to maximize the finicky crowds. Now on to UTSA - Dallas and Austin/San Antonio are two completely different markets. When a team plays in a market to recruit, they do so with the intention of bringing their recruits into the game. You are not going to get recruits from Austin and San Antonio to drive up to Denton to watch a team play. It just won't happen so I am not sure where you are going with that point... there are 3 schools to play in this area and up until UTSA, there has been only one option down south. What better way to recruit kids in the Austin/San Antonio markets but to beat the living crap out of the home team in the Alamo Bowl? Seems like a win/win to me and the teams do not have to pay a school like North Texas $750K to fill out their home schedule. UTSA has scheduled all series - no money games - so a school can have their cake and eat it too with those series. They can get UTSA for free at home and they can go there and have a cupcake on the road in fertile recruiting grounds. Schedules are done a few years in advance but the actual dates are not locked in until the offseason. We really had no idea where Indiana was going to pencil us in and I guarantee this board would have been pissing and moaning about opening up the stadium at 0-3 if RV hadn't moved the game. Happy New Year - life is good feller.

  40. MGC members....lol. Don't think it will affect the auto industry too much.

  41. Several things. Kinda Oxymoronic to suggest having less home games will lead to a better record, don't you think? Especially when we are playing LSU, K ST, and Houston on the road in OOC. If teams wannted to go to an area and recruit while also assuring themselves of a win, what better way to recruit the Dallas area than to play at North Texas (easier to beat than TCU or SMU until we prove otherwise). Just flawed logic. And lastly, why are we needing to hurry up and move a name opponent to open the new stadium? You had 3 years to figure that out. Either way, it is a failure by whoever does the scheduling for this program, and it will cost them season ticket holders and GMC members this year.
    1 point
  42. The AD needs to do a better job of communicating with fans, and particularly MGC members, what future schedules may look like. We always seem to be the last school to release schedules, and we find out about many of our future opponents through OUR OPPONENT'S websites. Maybe this is because we just don't have anythng to announce?? Having 7 OOC home games scheduled for the next 8 years is ridiculous (if that is all we have scheduled). If there are more scheduled. I wish someone, anyone would let us know.
    1 point
  43. Well, if the USF of the Lone Star State develops a football team, they are building the kind of home schedule that if you win at home a school can start getting Top 25 consideration or rankings while North Texas finds every excuse under the sun as to why our 100 year plan for success is so much the better; plus another previous game plan for success for UNT was when we had a former AD who told a fellow alum and myself why the Big West Conference would be so much better a league for UNT to be in than the league that would become CUSA . "We have met the enemy and the enemy is..... who the hell we've been hiring up there for most of the last 30 years. So go ahead, drink your green koolade but it's the damn truth and most our former HFC careeer w/l records of most every varsity coach we've had up there the last 30 years is the proof in the pudding. By the way, many athletic employees that that former UNT AD I mention in the above paragraph hired are still on the UNT payroll today after all these "suceessful" years later since he's been gone, too. What a helluva' peachy job to work in the safe confines and comfort zone of the North Texas athletic departmet where the more successful NCAA FBS schools are hardly coming to Denton by the droves to hire all our success stories away from us. I was a doubter before, but I now congratulate UTSA on their success and being a model for other schools who could also say "why not us" as part of their mission statement for their next 100 year plan. Moral of Story: North Texas has too much going for it "location-wise and constituency-wise" to keep standing still and to allow Sun Belt Conference "so-called" standards of excellance to continue to be our own. Just sayin' what many of our elect are still silently keeping to themselves. GMG!

  44. Yeah, it could be a contributing factor, kinda like two bullets may have hastened Kennedy's death even though everybody was aware that he had some unhealthy lifestyle choices. Bowls are ONLY created to boost tourism, to put people in local hotels during a slower season. If there are no economic benefits, as would be the case with Denton, there is no reason at all to host a bowl game.

  47. Being as objective as I can, I would say 22k scanned (including student #), 21k made it to their seats (as opposed to just leaving), 19k by half, and 16k by end of game. SMU has to do a better of job of not only getting fans, but getting them to stay (which includes allowing re-entry). In any case, I'm not looking for love on a UNT board. You've not been shy about your hate, and I'm not one to try and change your mind. I came on here to learn about a recruit SMU is recruiting. The fact is, I honestly feel many UNT fans look for a fight when one isn't there (not to suggest that there aren't some real idiot SMU fans). SMU is trying to build its brand outside of Texas. Playing NTx teams doesn't help with that. It's just that simple.
