First off, it's a running gag. Second, and more importantly, this is why we will always be small time. At a "big time" school there are multiple message boards. And there are multiple REAL hate filled posters on each of them. And their players manage to sleep at night. Only at North Texas where we lament our irrelevance, then cling to our little fishbowl reality, could this be an issue.5 points

Agreed. The purpose of the letter is to position UNT with TCU and SMU as the three big sports schools in DFW, rather than see us lumped in with UTA, UT-Dallas and the other four-year schools in the area.4 points

Some people might enjoy talking about their school being in third place. I'm not one of those people. I'm also not sorry if that offends anyone. Rick3 points

One quality that I noticed was sportsmanship. Years ago it was quality word but it has apparently lost it's value today. Perhaps Dr. Rawlins, being from that generation, was trying to express a little courtesy and compliment TCU and SMU on their achievements. At the same time I read that "you may have beat us there but we're turning the corner and will catch up." We are terrible sports. We criticize virtually everything that either accomplishes which makes them even snobbier and us look sour and jealous. The paragraph about basketball was completely ignored by our readers. In it, he expressly mentioned North Texas as the basketball leader in the Metroplex without any kudos to another Division I team. Lighten up. Our president's letter was not written to demean us or say that we will always be in third place. Tearing down SMU and TCU will never elevate us. We elevate ourselves by beating them (whenever we have the opportunity) or their constituents (when they won't play us). However, for now we should not worry about them or what they have accomplished; only what we will accomplish.2 points

Do you think any recruit didn't know this fact until Rawlins told them?2 points

This has nothing to do with being 'smart'. We are, after all, spending our leisure time arguing about a game - that puts us on par with 18 year-olds playing on-line fantasy games. As for our president mentioning TCU & SMU - if we're going to be lumped with Metroplex schools, I'd rather it be TCU & SMU rather than UTA, Texas A&M Commerce, and the other 4-year community colleges. It was a good letter. It touted our advances and it encouraged readers to see us in the same light as other DFW institutions that are making progress. Good Job Dr. Rawlins.2 points

You know, I hear you, but if it were just questioning that would be one thing...but it is far beyond "questioning"...it is always assuming the negative. That isn't questioning. I would say that many of those on here who are negative all the time have not earned the benefit of the doubt either because everyone knows that they will always assume the negative. They must be joys to be around most the time if they approach their whole life and everything around them the way they approach UNT. And, you don't think Dr. Rawlins has earned the benefit of the doubt? That man has done more in a shorter time to move UNT forward and to show UNT is a positive light than any one human being and certainly any UNT President in a great deal of time. If that isn't 100% apparent to folks, well, they just aren't paying attention or they want to "assume" negativity with all things UNT.2 points

None in the McCarney era. Zero. Zip. Zilch. Brooks? Nothing Not throwing a 3rd down pass in the 1st half against FIU? Not a peep (actually, more piling on of TD, a Vito tradition. When we lose a bowl game in 3 years, Vito will find. a way to blame TD). Pardon me if I don't hold my breath for some in depth reporting from Brett Vito.2 points

Why are you people so upset about 5 home games? Its not like we built a brand new stadium or something to accommodate more high-profile teams and attract new fans! You people are so delusional!2 points
-
Don't see that Dr. Rawlins is talking about UNT being in 3rd place. I think some are speculating and providing their own "reading" of the content. So be it...some see a glass as half full, others see it as half empty. But, one thing is for certain...a never ending truism...no matter what happens at, with or to UNT, some will alsways see the negative side. It's just one of those little things that is UNT.2 points

Excellent letter. Subtle letter. Hence, the difficulty some GMG posters have in understanding its message.2 points

There will be a Tony Mitchell Day tailgate next Sunday. Start time is 3pm and everyone is welcome. The tailgate last night was a success and, judging from the looks we got from passers by, it drew the requisite attention. So, come one come all, to the first annual Tony Mitchell Day celebration!! (I said first annual on purpose)1 point

Hired by Todd Graham at Arizona State. http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news?slug=ap-arizonast-assistantcoaches Taking Abilene Christian to the playoffs six seasons in a row was quite a feat for Thomsen. That school really was known more for its track program than anything else as far as athletics goes. We should keep Thomsen on our radar. Even though he spells Thompson wrong, he's a good coach.1 point

That's the problem with reading, or any media for that matter, hell let's throw in art, it's all open to interpretation. No matter what the intention of the author, director, artist, one's own personal experiences play a part in one's interpretation.1 point

Wow. Thanks for site!! I loved going back to the 96-97 and seeing names like Pooh Davis, Chuck Thrash and TJ Atkins. I also remember thinking Sean Riley was going to be so dominant until I saw him on the court. Thanks for the trip to my early years at NT!!1 point

I thought our mantra was "the leading university of the metroplex"? This letter comes across as the younger brother trying to play with his older brothers. That said Dr Rawlins is pitching a perfect game at this point I will give him the benefit of the doubt and see how this plays out1 point

+1 Exactly. I guess the downside of a little success this year is that people get tight and lose focus on what used to make this board fun: (1) Bits (2) Dick jokes (3) Uniform talk (4) Tight end talk (5) High school coach talk (6) Basics of running the football on 4th and 1 talk (7) Importance of having a fullback to running the football on 4th and 1 talk (8) Various inboard fights among FFR, Lifer, and Me (9) Rick Villareal talk (10) Attendance/Stadium talk In short, this board used to be, in comparative terms, like The Hardline of message boards. It's now more like Norm Hitzges.1 point

It relates to the many discussions that took place here about how UNT should pursue Mike Leach before Dan McCarney was hired. If you don't like that this post is here, how about taking it up with the moderators privately instead of pooping on the discussion?1 point

Sure would be nice if we had a recurring basketball themed podcast, focused on NT and the Sun Belt.1 point

I just want a reporter who reports. I was a Vito defender in the Dodge era. Just want the same diligence in the McCarney era. Ain't there. I give Coach Mac complete credit for being able to manipulate the beat reporter. Just another example of major college coaching experience.1 point

UNT hasn't earned the benefit of the doubt. Nothing wrong to question everything. If you stop questioning then get introduced to the dark side.1 point

Yeah, that's why I've always advised people to iron those $100.00 bills before going out on the UNT campus to hand them out. I don't tend to see the glass half full (especially if I don't see a pitcher or faucet in the immediate vicinity), but I damn sure don't care if my $100 is wrinkled.1 point

I understand and approve of the reason behind the letter, I just don't get what is accomplished by bringing SMU or TCU into the mix. I'm looking for a hidden benefit for UNT and coming up empty. If your smarter than me (completely probable), please let me know. By PM if necessary.1 point

I really think this at least warrants an explanation, at least to MGC members. This is just unacceptable. It is a step backwards to go back to 5 home games, particularly the quality of games. At least ULM's one OOC home game is Baylor.1 point

I've read some pretty heated comments about how Mat MacBriar boxing kangaroos is just aggressive slander and the images of his arrest are obviously photoshopped.1 point

You know,"down the corridor of years", I've found that well crafted letters can be like poetry and/or art. They can be open to interpretation by the individual reader(s),and they can (and in this case SHOULD) cause people to read the whole document and not dismiss it after the first two sentences. And then afterward discuss it's meaning. As long as we're being discussed, we aren't being ignored. And we've spend toooo many years suffering that fate. I would like to encourage everyone to please join Dr. Rawlins as he takes the high road in his journey to improve our actual, as well as our perceived situation in the metroplex regarding the state of our athletic program.1 point

It's a great letter overall. Pretending TCU isnt in the Big 12 and SMU didn't just get invited to the Big East is silly. Just acknowledge it and move on. All three football schools in the Metroplex could collectively use more attention than schools 300 miles north or south. The recent achievements of NT are the focus of the letter. This is a better way of gaining attention than some goofy "we demand to be in XYZ conference" statement. It being positive without being stupid.1 point

First, let me say that I personally like this letter and believe that it was the result of careful consideration and planning. Second, and completely unrelated, I'm not sure how many people care about UTA but the quote above is false in many different ways. In the case of my former roomate and 2 of his friends, who loved UNT by the way, they had to transfer to UTA this fall. When they enrolled here in 2008 the engineering department assured them that the mechanical engineering program would be accredited by 2012. Over the summer they found out that their degree program was not any closer to being accredited then when they started. All 3 of them along with many others have been forced to transfer due to the mechanical engineering department dragging their feet on this matter. So for many, UTA is not an " I got rejected from every school but don't want to go to community college" but more like a "I waited for a bigger school to get my degree program accredited and they screwed me when I could have gone to this great engineering school right down the road the whole time" type of school... just sayin1 point
