  3. This was in today's DMNews...not the D-RC. FWIW: Only a decade or so ago, excitement for college football in the Dallas-Fort Worth area came mostly from being a fan of a major college team either to the north or south of us. Today, there are plenty of reasons to be excited about teams that are playing successful Division I sports right here at home. Congratulations to TCU and SMU on their remarkable success in advancing to major conference affiliations, providing top quality football. UNT football also is moving forward. With our new Apogee Stadium and a proven coaching staff, we have made significant progress in the past year. All three universities are making remarkable progress competing in other sports. A lot of attention goes to men's basketball, especially at UNT, where we've had five straight seasons with more than 20 wins, resulting in two trips to the NCAA tournament. But there are great athletes playing competitively in almost every sport among the three Division I universities in Dallas-Fort Worth. For all of us at SMU, TCU and UNT, maintaining the quality of our academic programs is the most important goal. Yet offering strong, visible athletic programs is an important part of university success. And it's fun for everyone. V. Lane Rawlins, president, University of North Texas, Denton Read More: http://letterstotheeditorblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2011/12/excitement-here.html This post has been promoted to an article

  4. If you had ever been involved in any merger and acquisition work, you'd know that "silence" is necessarily bad at all. Demanding answers from those either legally or for negotiation purposes obligated to reveal nothing will not get your story and will only burn your source.

  5. GMG Guide: "Quitter" - a player who leaves North Texas before their time here is done. Not a personal attack. Just a statement of fact of a player's status for any team we care about. "Mean Green Athlete" - includes players who transferred to UNT to play for the only team that matters. I hope that clears things up a bit. Reposted AGAIN for those who need it. Again. AGAIN.

  6. This "quitter" joke needs to be taken out back and shot. What would Darius White, or any other potential transfer to UNT, think if he found this board while picking schools and saw himself called a quitter? The athlete's not going to understand that it's an inside joke.

  7. An FIU win would have been good for the belt, but....Isaiah Thomas can suck it.

  8. Wish the Mean Green could get these guys, but it would have to be an away game since they refuse to set foot in Apogee.

  12. I'm just glad for the fact that somebody other than the University of Arkansas is gaining some publicity in that state. ASU has a chance to get a really nice footprint if they keep things like this up.

  13. I think we (UNT officials) are severely underestimating the power of an effective media campaign. That is all.

  14. Over the years, I've heard from several players and their parents who read GoMeanGreen.Com. This site ranks highly for search terms related to Mean Green football, so it's not as unlikely as you think that a potential recruit might find it. Calling them quitters is a stupid joke based on some member's insult of Riley Dodge when he transferred out.

  15. The idea that a recruit or transfer bases where they continue their football career on a college's non-affiliated, third-party message board should also be taken out back and shot.

  19. Twas the night we’d been waiting for all across Mean Green land. Not a dissension was stirring; the flames of hope had been fanned. His finals all taken, he’d received the appropriate score. It was time for Tony Mitchell to hit the hardwood floor. The Pit Crew was standing; the Alums took a seat, it was time to see if the Mean Green would truly compete With Villarreal in his sport coat and Dr. Rawlins across the court, the crowd was there to see if he was as good as the report When out from the tunnel came two cheerleaders with banners. The crowd noise was excessive, like kids with no manners. The team followed closely with a certain new poise. The fans were predicting some tournament noise. Sitting at court side, glare hardened like stones and dressed in his finest was coach Johnny Jones. More rapid than eagles his players they came, and he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name? There was Jones and Williams and Franklin and Hall, Hogans and Edwards but that wasn’t all. The team was well rounded and if Mitchell did fit, he hoped that this year would finally be it. The crowd was a twitter with anticipatory glee, they had come to see the Mean Green, including Tony. For the end of the story and to come and take stock, December 18th at the Super Pit, tip off - seven o’clock. This post has been promoted to an article

  21. But, but they haven't called and told me what they are doing, so they must not be doing anything. Thank goodness June Jones didn't get embarrassed by going public concerning the ASU job before the "I's" were dotted and "T's" crossed.

  22. Harry, I agree with each point that you made but we do not know that every one hasn't been covered. We are much more experienced with the ins and outs of politicking for admission to a conference than any previous effort. Rick Villareal was the Athletics Director when we applied in 2005 so he has been through this before; albeit unsuccessfully. President Lane Rawlins was instrumental in the formation of CUSA when he was president at the University of Memphis. Who better to know that conference? He has also been a member of the NCAA council so he should know the requirements and how to best present them. Chuck Neinas (and his firm) has been an advisor in coach selection and supposedly also in selling the university to other institutions. If I remember correctly, he was the one who gathered the information for CUSA at the last expansion. I would bet the farm that we have prepared a sterling presentation and have been in contact with the presidents of each institution in both CUSA and the Mountain West. Dr. Rawlins knows what is at stake financially for us and I'm sure that he understands that a higher profile conference will be far better for us attendance-wise. Our previous downfall (when UTEP was chosen) was facilities and attendance. At least this time they can't gig us for facilities. Another advantage is that neither conference will now have a presence in the fifth largest TV market and we have more alumni in that area than SMU and TCU combined. Our proximity to the third busiest airport is another plus. We would be in the center of a merged league or within the footprint of either conference. Our football program appears to be turning the corner as our coaching changes have us moving in the right direction. Unfortunately, the improvement is not yet enough to be a strong factor in our favor. Our other sports, especially basketball, are becoming very competitive. We have much more going for us this time around. One thing that I'm definitely with you on is the accounting for any reason, or reasons, for failure should we not be accepted. At least, we have one less adversary in each conference this time around so protecting turf can't be the excuse.

  23. I wonder if we have the in-house talent to really get the most of conference realignment. Isn’t there a consultant out there that we could hire that would help lead us through this process? Maybe a retired AD who was successful at moving their University up the conference food chain?

  25. ....or any interested North Texas alumni/fan who is familiar with how to file the paperwork. I suspect that Vito, or the DRC/DMN have the paperwork already loaded on their computer and just have to fill in certain blanks and hit "print". However, unlike Alumni/fans, Vito risks compromising his working relationship with administrators/coaches every time he files said paperwork. Not so with us. The only down side to this thread, is that it insinuates that Harry is starting to expect that we'll get passed over again... The only thing it says to me is that Harry is no longer going to operate on faith, when it comes to the actions (or inaction) of our administrators.

  26. So, basically you're tired of all the rumors of school's blackballing us over the last 30-40 years. Agreed. Are our administrators doing all they can to improve our lot in conference realignment, are we getting blackballed by other schools, or do is it simply a dog and pony show our administrators put on to keep the loyal fans satisfied? Let's settle it once and for all. An open records request by Vito ought to do the trick. The only down side to this thread, is that it insinuates that Harry is starting to expect that we'll get passed over again...

  27. And North Texas got good publicity after the Todd Dodge hire, and that ended up being a disaster. Not saying Malzahn is anything close to Todd Dodge, just giving a word of caution: Hire the guy that you (the person doing the hiring) think will win you football games, not the guy that will get your program a quick splash on local, or even national, TV.

  28. Thank you Harry. I totally agree with this. To me, this is the answer to all those out there who have said "quit being negative and have faith that our administrators are doing their best to move things forward". This is a public University. I expect full disclosure from administrators regarding their efforts to get this University in a position to realize it's maximum potential......and then I'll think about having faith. Again, great post Harry......+10

  29. We've not needed quitters that quit way before Rodge. I do agree that calling the misguided youths deciding to leave other football programs "Quitters" is stupid. People just cant seem to "Get it."

  30. Well...one way is to stop by the Mean green Club happy Hour this evening from 6-8PM at Metzler's BBQ on Londonderry Lane in Denton to hear from Coach Jones...and Coach Aston...about their teams and the season ahead. Perhaps a T Mitch and Patton update in the making here...who knows. That seems like a great way to spend some of those 96 hours!

  31. Side note: MGS.com just published "Mitchell Expected to Join Hoops Team Sunday." "expected".... Frustrating to think we can anticipate Roger Franklin-esque punctuality from within our own departments? edit: I suppose in this case it is the nature of the beast, rather than some NCAA Mean Green delay.

  35. So, you're saying the Rice Marching Owl Band was wrong in spelling out "A SLUT" for him when they played "TULSA" the year after he left Rice? I mean, there is a difference, in that one is doing it because that's what they do, whereas the other is always looking for the big payout.

  36. Let's go ahead and get the annual Ark State and UNT game moved to the last game of the season. That way, when it's played for a BCS spot in 2014, we'll garner maximum exposure. #drinkingbefore5pmdontjudgeme

  41. I really think a lot of yall dont know who Gus Malzahn is. This guy wrote the book on the hurry up offense Heres the book. The man is an offensive genius, he uses the refs as screens in his plays... He was a HS coach back in 2001, its not like he came right out of HS like Dodge This is an absolute great hire for stAte, but I dont know how long he'll be there... I dont know if hes committed to the program like Mac or if hes using this as a stepping stone.. Interesting to see who had a better first year with all there Sr. leaving, Mac or Malzahn

  43. I'm not sure about some of that stuff. AK is a great guy. The players love him, and we all know he can recruit his ass off (even out recruit USC and UCLA at times). But I doubt his actual coaching abilities at the moment (as in a major coordinating position). That OL littered with seniors looked far from impressive. We also have very little knowledge as to how he can manage with x's and o's. He may turn out to be a genius, or another dud. I am saddened to see him go as a recruiter, but I wouldn't be so fast to name him a head coach (let alone an OC). Time will tell though.

  44. Yeah, the kids down South are just built better, what a reach. Texas players have always been as good as anyone that is why this state supports 10 going on 12 fb division programs plus about every other team in the nation recruits here. There are good players everywhere, Texas just has more of them. NT for years as had to recruit a lot of players away from the metroplex, I think primarily because they just haven't been able to compete with the many who recruit here for the best players. La is a natural recruiting area in that they have a lot of athletes and only one major conference player in LSU. It appears to me that despite the new stadium and McCarney's enthusiasm that NT is still basically recruiting from the same pool of players that they have traditionally got., borderline fb division players which have not been heavily recruited. Before all the rebuttals, please take time to look at NT recruit list and note how few have any offers from other Texas fb division schools and how many are from smaller private and state schools. Yes, they can all turn out to be superstars and we all hope they do. I do believe that Mac is probably a very good recruiter but currently he is hindered by both NT's recent poor football history and being in a very under appreciated conference. USM was mentioned and actually they are a very good example of what NT can do. They have built their program not by getting blue chips but being able to recruit very well from second tier recruits.

  46. Columbia is better than Loyola Marymount...they're the bigger concern in the Cali Tourney. I say we lose to Texas on a questionable last second foul call. Those games tend to be more memorable around here. Seriously, I can't wait for the UT game...Jones and Alzee against Myck Kabongo and J'Covan Brown is gonna be fun to watch. It seems everything worked out in Rick Barnes' favor here though...last game of a tough 4 game roadie, no Tony Mitchell... Mind you if JJ doesn't win he should be fired and forced to drive back to Denton from far south Austin on 35 at 5:02PM on a rainy Friday afternoon.
