  2. Politically motivated forced outrage over the respectful handling of the death of a fellow human being is rather pathetic.

  3. Folks, today, Dec. 7th is Pearl Harbor day. You won't see that much about it on the news or in the papers any longer (other than a short mention here and there), but it is a day that will forever be etched in the memory of this great nation of ours. It reflects quite clearly what happens when a great nation forgets that it should always be prepared for the unexpected. So many lives lost that day in 1941 and so many would be lost in the days and years following the attack on Pearl Harbor. We must never forget and we must remember today those brave men and women who lost their lives on Dec. 7, 1941 and those who fought, were injured and/or died in the struggle that followed. My sincere thanks go out to all who served in that great battle and to all who have served since, serve now and who will serve in the future. This nation is losing that "Greatest Generation" of men and women rather rapidly these days, but if you are fortunate enough to know someone who did serve during WWII, take a moment to shake their hand and tell them that you remember and that you will always remember the sacrifices they made and the conditions they endured to ensure freedom for the citizens of the United States and great part of the world. Mat God bless and keep them one and all.

  4. I love your new Kramshield of conversation parameters. If you need me, I'll be actually working to promote a few charity efforts and partnerships related to honoring and raising funds for veterans while you click your heels for the +1 attention fairy to recognize you as the guy who brought Pearl Harbor Day to GMG. Also, very unfortunate typo on that last word. Very offensive.

  5. Nope. That's not it. There are many students who have never played sports or who didn't grow up with a culture of sports who get caught up in the college atmosphere. The operative word here is atmosphere. Winning is great, yes, but that's not really what brings people to games. During the early 2000s, we had the longest conference winning streak in the nation, and attendance wasn't horrible, but it wasn't as good as this year. What got people starting to come out was the atmosphere. I was president of Clark Hall during those years, and we consistently brought 30-40 residents per game (those are just the ones who sat with us). We didn't start out with that number initially, but we hung out in the entry way and common rooms before the games, offering to paint students up, loan a t-shirt, and just become involved. Many of the students had never really been interested in sports, but they became some of the most rabid fans. Yes, they were music majors, art majors, or other majors you think are the "weirdos" who don't care about sports. Rather than ostracize what you perceive as the super majority of students on campus, maybe you could focus your efforts on finding ways to help those students connect to sports.

  6. One of the coolest videos I have ever seen a University put together just, for a Holiday Greeting at that. Pretty funny but really cool that they covered pretty much the whole genre of UNT. Brave Combo, President Lane Rawlins, Johnny Jones, Karen Aston and more! This post has been promoted to an article

  9. I'd love to see Scotty Young come home to play at North Texas. He could be an integral part of building something special at his home town college. His mother has been working with North Texas students for years as the owner of "On the Cuff" Embroidery and Gifts, the pink building at Dallas Drive and Teasley. Think of the opportunity that is currently presented to Scotty. He could play somewhere that he could develop his game and possibly become a legend. Yes, he can be that good if he's given the chance. Scotty Young selected AP Texas Player of the Year Or, he could go elsewhere where he may or may not have a chance to compete and simply be on somebody's depth chart as an insurance policy.

  19. I'm tired of people on here complaining about students not caring about athletics. They go to The University of North Texas. UNIVERSITY. Every student's first priority should be about their school work and their future careers. Football is not the main reason they are here, or basketball, etc. I'm not talking about the people who say they wish the students would support the team, because I wish that too. I am talking about the people who say the students don't support the football team hate the school or do a disservice to the university. Its a ridiculous statement. Support should not be a tyrannical requirement. Better yet, lead by example and show them how its done. People will come around more that way than bashing them and calling them less for not going.

  21. Yawn. There were 72 eligible teams for 70 slots. The SBC's own bowls didn't want WKY so why complain about a California based bowl selecting a 6 win, PAC-12 South division champ, UCLA? Also as a team that has received a bowl waiver, we really can't complain about UCLA getting one.

  23. Go to class every Monday. Mention at the beginning of class so that everyone can hear about what a great time you had at the game last weekend. Wear it with pride. And that's it. For those who scoff, let them scoff and do not deride them. Every once in a while, someone will come up and ask about the games. Invite them to tailgate, walk them into the stadium. Let word spread. But do not, under any circumstances, deride.

  24. all it proves is that its ok to schedule a 1aa opponent like Indiana State, but you can't lose to them by 3 touchdowns and expect a bowl bid.W.K. is not Michigan, plus they had lowest home attendance average in the Belt, which means they might not travel well.

  25. I think any democrat who presumes Gingrich is cannon fodder does so at their own peril. If you've actually paid any attention to many of the long format interviews he has given, you'd see that he's open about discussing bad decisions and errors in judgement in his past. ...the most telling thing about Newt is that people know him. They already know the dirt, much of it manufactured or magnified, and yet in every major poll he's leading the Republican race AND beating Obama. Nancy thinks she's got dirt on him that's going to impact the race? The single most unpopular politician in America is going to be the person who's going to release the dirt and be taken seriously by anyone other than her nut riders who already drink the kool-aid? ...and when it comes down to a debate with Obama, Gingrich would eat his lunch. ...because Gingrich has Ideas, and Obama's got the same sorry line and blame everyone else crap he's been laying on all of us since the 2008 campaign, only now he has a dismal record too. Gingrich isn't my first choice, but I'm certainly not concerned that he can't perform against Obama. ...and I'm happier than a pig in slop when I hear the Democrats acting like they can't lose if he gets the nomination. The point is, there isn't really anything new and negative that can hurt him - he's easily the most vetted candidate to run for any office in the last 20 years. I think the weight of the Cain endorsement and a Win in Iowa catapults Newt to a solid 2nd place and maybe even a dark horse 1st Place in NH. I'm not sure that anyone OTHER than Romney will have the ability to stay in and compete much past that point. Even though Newt isn't my favorite, it's an easy choice between him and Obama for me, and according to the polls, for a growing number of voters as well.

  26. I thing Coach and RV both did very well this year. Yes, there are things that could have been done better, but this was probably the best overall year since I started as a Freshman back in 1976. I first heard that attendance will pick up if we get into the Southwest Conference. Then it was if we could just go back to being 1A. Then it was getting out of the Big West. Now it's getting out of the Sun Belt. At some point, it becomes the responsibility of alumni and students to JUST SHOW UP no matter who we are playing.

  27. The only area I put any blame on DMac is the piss poor showings on the road, otherwise he did do all he could, the poor turnout IMO relates to the AD and the many Student Organizations not buying into Athletics

  29. I just wanted to mention what i thought was a very nice gesture from Coach Mac last evening at the final Coach Mac Radio Show of the year...Coach Mac personally bought a drink (beer, soda, etc.) for everyone in attendance as a token of his thanks for our attendance during the year. He has consistently called us the "few, the proud" and stuff like that during the year and has thanked everyone on several occasions, so we pretty much knew how he felt about our attendance, so this gesture was really unexpected and heartfelt. I truly believe that Coach Mac is the right guy at the right time for UNT. Thanks Coach mac for helping to re-establish UNT on the road to being a winning program once again. I did feel a touch of frustration on Coach Mac's part last evening when he talked about attendance and specifically student attendance. he made the comment that he felt like he had done everything he could to engage the student body and to help get them interested in attending games. I sensed a bit of frustration on his part with the results and payback from the students for his and his team's efforts. He said it made a big difference to recruits when they visit to see a full stadium...it said it matters and while UNT set an all-time attendance record this season, he was hopeful that the UNT fan base and the student body would get behind the program and turn out in bigger and bigger numbers in the future. It was a very positive and very enjoyable show to attend last evening. Coach Mac talked about players he discussed for all conference on the coach call in recently...Lance Dunbar,Will Atterberry, AK, Zach Orr. He also mentioned Lemon as freshman of the year and Lance as Offensive player of the year. Interesting also that he mentioned that not all the SunBelt coaches attended that conference call...several SunBelt Coaches on the call were not at all happy about that...even mentioned the possibility of future fines for non-attendance. Hmmmmm...interesting. He also talked about several red shirt freshmen that he feels will have impact next season, how our O-line will immediately be in better shape across the board. Some of you folks who also attended help me out with some names here for those who couldn't attend or listen in on the radio. Anyway, it was a nice last show, and I was happy I got to be part of it. Next season is looking even better... This post has been promoted to an article

  30. Heh. Even the Big West told Boise to go shove it in their hats. The only way they're getting in is with an exorbitant exit fee clause. They spent a couple years in the Big West as transients in a football halfway house, and crapped all over the conference when they left. I don't know how or why North Texas entered or left the Big West, so I absolutely don't mean to paint with broad strokes. I'm thinking of specific actions and words from Boise early in the decade.

  32. I don't know if I disagree with what you're predicting, but if I am reading you right, I think it is incorrect to expect anybody - including 4* - to come in and blow a lineman out of the water if said lineman has 1+ season of college food/weight training under their belt. A 2* or 3* junior lineman is going to be a leg up on any kid coming out of high school. The exception might be a top-25 recruit at his position nationally. Having said that, I don't know where Cam stands from experience: did he get to practice at Arkansas? Train/eat, etc? I have no idea.

  33. Never said my expertise is greater than Mac's, all I said was that he isnt the 4* transfer that you would expect to get. 4* means that youre one of the best in the state; especially in Texas. Those type of players should have immediate impact on a team with all 3* and under. I dont think and many others dont he'll be an upgrade over Tomlinson, thats going to be a tough lost. These freshman will get better and Im excitied to see how much they improve this offseason. BTW Coach Simmonds is a beast of a coach, he did a great job this year!!

  37. We have a ton of posters that act like recruiters on the recruiting section of the board. When our members get their hard on about recruits I guess that is ok but nobody can have an opposite viewpoint therefore your comeback is comparing him to that of the head coach?

  38. Oh, you mean other than the fact we have an also ran in the national championship game that couldn't even win it's division much less it's conference, sat home on "decision Saturday" and has already lost to the team it is now scheduled to play for the national championship? Yes, other than that travesty, Western Kentucky certainly has some room to feel slighted. Could it also have happened to UNT if UNT had those six wins? Could be...NOW THAT WOULD BE A TRAVESTY WORTH MENTIONING!

  40. North Texas attracts a lot of, how should I say this, "interesting" students. I would guess 40% of the student body doesn't give a damn about football in general, not just ours. I hear quite a few of these conversations too, but today I overheard some guys talking about the future of the team and how they planned on making every game next year as opposed to just the Houston game this season, and probably 3-4 groups talking about Tony Mitchell. We have more apathetic non athletic friendly people on campus than at most schools, but there's still a lot of dudes 18-21 that love football, they just don't love a losing team. We're all upset with attendance Saturday, but I know for a fact, if we start winning, 25k is not out of the question, and it will only grow from there in terms of students. We just have to WIN.

  41. I get what it means or what its supposed to mean but times change...things evolve...its really no big deal in my honest opinion. It's not like every school in the BE are just 2 hours from each other. Traveling from NY to Tampa isn't all that close...they're in the same time zone but not region. Things change and evolves over time...I think people make it a bigger deal than what it really is.

  44. DMac is on the right track but he also needs to take responsibility in some ways for the low student turnout as does RV and the Administration as a whole for breeding a culture that does not attract students to the games. Also not competing well on the road against winnable teams (FIU, ASU, Tulsa) can kill any excitement for the fence sitters. DMac is a great ambassador for the school, but he also needs help from those above him and beside him, he can not do it alone.

  47. Let's see...who fought the playoff proposal the hardest last time? Hint #1: It wasn't the SEC; they wanted it. Hint #2: It was the Big 12 I'm totally okay with fewer bubble screens, dumb over-sized play cards and junk defense in my national championship game, especially since the Big 12 did this to themselves when we could have had a nice four team season-capper between LSU, Bama, Stanford and OSU. Drink up, Judah-Dan Beebe...wherever you are.

  48. No, I didn't. But i expect that from our university, not UTA. That 22.5 Mil donation was a naming rights deal by non alumni folks at Apogee. UTA's Athletic center on the other hand is being named after an alumn who stepped forward. Another came forward with $750K. As little support as NT has had I would never consider NT on the same level as UTA. Just considering where they have been all these years a near $7 Mil deal so far is surprising, to me. Rick
