  1. Okay. I'm a Junior at UNT, transferred after my freshman year and I've lurked these boards for almost two years now and I have never had the urge to contribute to any conversation or felt I had anything meaningful to say. With that being said, I've made this account to specifically address this attendance issue that grown men are pissing themselves over. Here are the reasons students did not show up to this game specifically, but all of them for that matter: 1. It is not UNT culture to be highly involved in football (or any other sport). It is not advertised around school. The administration, in my opinion, makes no effort to get the regular student involved with sports. Occasionally they will put up small plastic signs at 4 locations on campus on game week. Great. What an advertising lure! ... Not. UNT needs to make football BIG. There is nothing around campus that shouts, "WE LOVE SPORTS! GO MEAN GREEN!" Zero advertisement. 2. History of losing. Most students see UNT sports as a joke- They don't care. I've had one professor in my 1 and 1/2 years talk about the football team in class. No students cared. Why? Because of losing IN ADDITION with the lack of culture. It's not something for the average student to get excited about because they've been let down for years and don't expect anything. When you don't expect anything, why bother? They don't want to show up to a game to just be let down. Students feel it is embarrassing and are ashamed when the football program has done so bad in recent years. They don't expect anything to change. Even with a new stadium. When I came here Todd Dodge was at my student orientation, he gave us the sales pitch that UNT will do great this year in football and it's time to turn the program around and it sounds similar to what McCarney has said. Do you think the average student who is only familiar with losing and the lack of football culture and lack of sports knowledge is going to see ANY difference between the same hopeful speech by two different people? No. Only with this much improved season will students realize "Hey, maybe this is worth checking out now." It takes a season of doing significantly better to gain any recognition and that's what happened this season. Not next season, but the next will UNT be what you ranting immature adults WANT the student fan section to look like. 3. The HISTORY of UNT football or Lance making any accomplishments is NOT known to the average student. NCAA breaking records, what do you expect them to know about it? Again, I put this on the administration and/or the Athletics Department for NOT making it known. One email. Great. 1. Not everyone checks their email. 2.Emails are easily overlooked, we get so much crap emails from the administration already can you expect us to read through every one? No. Most people see the block of text we received and blow past it. NOT to mention it wasn't even from the Athletics Department or have FOOTBALL anywhere in the title. It was sent by freaking MARKETING in the name. We see marketing, we think it's spam. Maybe try titling the letter: "NCAA RECORDS TO BE BROKEN" with football as the email name. Not marketing@randomname.com Try: MEANGREENFOOTBALL@UNT.COM Maybe that might catch more attention. 4. WITH all of the mentioned aspects above, it was raining and cold. And most of you raving alumni are foul mouthing the students as you sit in freaking COVERED club level seats and seem to not think the weather is an issue. We found out at the FAU game we are NOT allowed umbrellas. This is a huge issue. As students, we are not going to sit through bad weather and be rained on terribly and be cold when there is no spirit for football and it really doesn't matter if we win or lose anyways because there is no tradition or culture to care. If I could sit there with an umbrella. I would have gone. But nope, because I knew I would have sat there, gotten wet and cold and gotten sick the week before FINALS (education and health come first). This part, I blame on the staff at the stadium. (which this is not the only issue with a stadium staff, I originally wrote a lot more, but decided to drop it.) This game was the first game I missed and I had to listen to it on the radio. I live in the dorms, I was disappointed and mad that I had to miss it. Yes. Had to. As I'm sure every other student who WOULD have gone if it wasn't raining felt. If you were there during the FAU game, which we won, you would have seen the student section was big, then dwindled down as the weather got worse. Weather is a huge factor. We don't live up north, we do not have full weatherproof clothing. The most winter suitable clothes we have is jeans. Jeans get wet. With no overhead protection we are going to get soaked and be uncomfortable and cold and get sick. End of story. Yes. Panchos were available to be purchased, but this isn't known to students. We weren't told- how should we know? I sure didn't until I saw a picture on Scrappy's Facebook page. And they cost money. We're college students. Do you think we're going to pay for anything? No, lol. Now I'll be the final word on the matter of attendance and the voice of the students: "Shut up. Make us *feel more involved and we will care more. We want to care more. We want to be involved with our university. We want that classic university experience and we want it to be first class so don't blame us for being apathetic and disillusioned. Do you think we want that?" This post has been promoted to an article

  2. I see what you did here... you insinuated that JayDub was a pot head and dead in a gutter, but then you found out he wasn't because he posted in this thread. Clever Clever FireHatMan. I got a 3 day ban for calling someone Chubby one time, but then again I didn't build half of Denton like you did, all great and mighty FHM.

  3. I take offense to this as a UNT faculty member that attends football games. Our preferred pejorative is "self serving psuedo intellectual eggheads. Thanks for your attention to this matter.

  4. I went to the gift shop and bought a poncho for $4.95 and enjoyed the hell out of this event with the other students that braved the weather. Penis remained dry the entire game and I'm not sick. It didn't interfere with school work and I'm ready for finals. As far as not being advertised, yes that does suck and it would be nice if they made a bigger deal about athletics. However, you know the games exist and I feel it's just as much our responsibility as students to get our friends to go as it is the responsibility of the university to advertise.

  6. What put it most in perspective for me was when just as we were FINALLY pulling into the driveway late last night, the F5, a ten year old, chimes in from the back seat with, ..."I know it was cold and nasty but I sure am glad we went. Just think what we would have missed?". That's what it's all about right there! Rick

  7. I noticed the same thing. He just looks like he loves playing the game and is having a great time. He had a smile on his face walking out onto the court, playing D, on the bench, eating cheerios. I don't think he knows how to frown. He's also the team cheerleader when on the bench. Agreed. I couldn't believe he was a freshman. He had a calm demeanor in the half court, and could turn on some serious jets when running a break. He's the real deal, and as he gets more experience, he could be something very special. Tough guy. Took one hellacious shot in the ribs, but came back and had a monster dunk that changed the momentum with about 7 or 8 minutes to go. The team was on cruise control after that. Same here to you, SouthBend and Tasty. And thanks to you guys for helping me get acquainted with the players since I do not follow basketball that closely. There's a lot to be excited about as this group develops. And don't worry about the mustard stain. I did it on purpose. I remembered an old finger-painting class and that if you mix yellow and blue, you get green. I was trying to turn my blue jeans into some pantalones verdes malos, but it didn't quite work out. What none of us knew until now is that Kelly Green is a chromatic mutant developed at Area 51, and cannot be replicated with earth ingrediants. That would explain all the shade of green controversy. That was classy, especially with Brandon's family in attendance.

  8. DallasGreen is a mite over the top, but other than too few exceptions; what he said rang true. Name me one fb division university much less one with around 36k students that gets less support from the community. If NT could relocate, municipalities would be pledging millions to have the university move in, yet Denton threats both universities as something that is to be endured not supported. Every NT fan should be embraced because they are certainly not enough, but IMO those that put in years of support in both attendance and money deserve their rants. My take was that the NT/MTSU game was something not to be missed, yet many who identify themselves as fans couldn't be bothered. The weather was a big factor, but was not that bad. I am just glad I am one of the few thousand fans that actually saw Dunbar and the team's performance. As an aside, if all you can't muster to rebuff a post is grammar or syntax, than don't.

  9. Congratulations for packing the greatest numbers of cliches and stereotypes into one disjointed paragraph. It makes a good substitute for thinking. North Texas has a long-standing issue with alumni and fan support, but your approach is hardly the way to win friends and influence people. I understand your frustration, but venting your projections upon the rest of the world is unhelpful at best.

  10. I'm guessing you're referring to me as a "doped up drop out"...? Very funny and oh-so-classy. You, of all people, likely dealing with death and people who have substance abuse issues every single time you go on shift...you find humour in that? Truly sickening...and, yet, sadly unsurprising when considering the source. I can live with the dropout thing...but, the "doped up" portion I take exception to. Would you like to see the results of my latest random, DOT-mandated piss test?

  13. September 1, at FIU – The team comes out for the first time under new coach Dan McCarney with much fanfare, and falls flat on its face. I’m in class during this game, check the score during a break, see 28-0, and think to myself it’s going to be more of the same ole’ UNT football. Loss 41-16. Sept 10, Houston – After decades of waiting, the new stadium is here and ready to go! We’re uncertain where to park, or how to tailgate. A bunch of people come to check out the new digs, but the place doesn’t quite sell out. Andrew McNulty scores the first touchdown at Apogee Stadium, and UNT hangs tough with Houston for the first half, only to fall apart in the second half. We see Case Keenum light up the field between rounds of filling out his AARP membership applications on the sidelines. Loss 48-23 Sept 17, at Alabama – Our annual foray into body bag games. UNT doesn’t even show up to this game. Fans start to question the new coaching staff. The UNT Athletic Department cashes its check and licks it wounds. Loss 41-0 Sept 24, Indiana – UNT’s first win at Apogee Stadium, and first win under Coach MCarney. UNT controls the game completely until the fourth quarter, in which Indiana mounts a furious comeback, but ultimately comes up short. Students rush the field after the victory, much to the dismay of some, the delight of others. The Mean Green Brigade is shamed into wearing pants for the remainder of the season. Win 24-21 Oct 1, at Tulsa – Fresh off its first win of the season, against AQ Indiana, UNT heads on up to Tulsa with great optimism, only to run straight into a golden hurricane. Starting quarterback Derek Thompson it out for this game, replaced by backup Anrew McNulty, who proves ineffective against a swarming Tulsa defense. Mean Green Nation gnashes its collective teeth. Loss 41-24 Oct 8, Florida Atlantic – Legendary coach Howard Schnellenberger returns to Denton for the last time. With Thompson back under center, UNT controls this game from start to finish including two pick sixes on defense. The fourth quarter is questionable once again as FAU scores twice, but UNT holds on. Talk of bowl eligibility begins among the fan base. Win 31-17 Oct 15, at Lousiana Lafayette – UNT goes into the half down only 3, and looking like they have a legitimate shot for the victory, only to suffer yet another fourth quarter meltdown. Somebody needs to send a memo to the locker room that the game continues after the 45 minute mark. Some wonder if the relationship between the McCarney and McNulty families is kosher. Loss 30-10. Oct 22, Louisiana Monroe – Homecoming. The tailgating is going fast and furious, although some missed it because of a 2-hour change in game time. ULM returns the opening kickoff for a touchdown, Meen Green Nation groans, but UNT gets up, dusts itself off, and controls the game for the duration, the outcome never in question. Greek letters are seen on the hill by the fans. The university, and possibly the TABC are notified. Oct 29, at Arkansas St – A straight up beating handed to UNT by a very good Arkansas St. team. McNulty spends most of the game under center, and isn’t very effective. Lance Dunbar runs for only 90 yards. Mean Green Nation questions McCarney’s dedication to road games vis a vis the window dressing of home victories against bad teams. Loss 37-14 Nov 12, at Troy – Oh no! Another road game! This time to five-time conference champion Troy. But with Thompson back in the game, UNT goes the passing route for 331 yards, and a much diminished Troy squad falls. On its last chance to do so, UNT gets its elusive road victory, but Dunbar isn’t looking so good right about now. Win 38-33 Nov 19, Western Kentucky – The hill is mysteriously empty prior to this game before president Lane Rawlins comes marching triumphantly into town with several thousand students in his wake. We still question what the heck a Hilltopper actually is, but Western Kentucky shows us what’s what in coaching improvement and sticks it to us after a questionable call on UNT’s part to go for it on 4th and 1 while in easy field goal range. Lance Dunbar is out for all but one play, in which the SBC refs are unable to discern what exactly constitutes the plane of the endzone. The entire team seems to have slathered their hands in butter prior to the game as nobody can hold on to the ball under any circumstances. Mean Green Nation discusses the ability to make quick decisions and close out games, our bowl game hopes and dreams dashed for the season. Loss 31-21 Dec 3, Middle Tennessee – Had this game been at Fouts Field, we could have made endless jokes about hearing crickets in the stands. A cold, rainy afternoon brought out Patrick Cobbs, the Mean Green Brigade, and well, pretty much nobody else. Even the cannon was afraid of the rain. A home field winning record, a rushing record, an attendance record all on the line, UNT runs this game like its own personal body bag. Dunbar gets 313 yards and crushes just about every record ever written, UNT scores eight touchdowns before finally turning off the jets in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter. Brett Vito just can’t help himself in the in-game blog, refusing to acknowledge that UNT had ramped up for this game, instead choosing to state that MTSU is “Bad, very very bad.” Poncho sales were at an all time high in the UNT shop. Final record – 5-7 for a .417 winning pct, a 198% increase over the previous four years, as many home wins as 2007-2010 combined, five wins over bad teams, seven losses to good teams. Several key seniors depart, leaving us with ample opportunity to discuss what ifs and how’s its for the next nine months and where Coach McCarney and staff is going to take this much improved program.

  15. My problem with the direction this thread has taken is this: if you didn't want to go just say so. Don't give me a list of reasons blaming the school, weather, or anything else that kept you from going. You didn't go because you didn't want/care to. Simple as that.

  17. DallasGreen: The arrogance wreaking from your post is laughable and your attitude towards how other people should feel toward football is down-right rude. To assume attendance at a football game is the only representative factor in someone's opinion or loyalty to their alma mater is ignorant. College isn't just about sports (GASP!). Further, to think attendance is somehow the responsibility of a Denton resident is wrong. I know to a football fan like you (and to an extent me), to fathom that someone doesn't like football is difficult, but you can't expect people who aren't sports fans in general to attend a UNT game. Should the city and UNT do a better job at promoting the game and bringing community involvement sure, but to bash a town that has no history of football allegiance because they didn't see a record broken is abrasive and makes me want to distant my fan-dom if that is how a UNT fan acts. Lastly, and frankly, I don't care how much money you have given to UNT; that doesn't justify your immaturity in calling out the people you did because of a game. ~mic drop~

  21. I think people underestimate just how many lurkers probably go through this board and browse through from time to time. That being said I really thought the whole goal was to make fans come to games or come to games with more frequency. If they see about 5 threads a day dedicated about worthless attendance, alumni, students, fans, and cities then I don't think they'll be so inclined to want to support us.

  22. I enjoyed sitting, standing, and cheering shoulder to shoulder under the overhang of the club level. With all of us up there, it seemed like a crowded game... until you looked down over the empty rows to the field. GREAT way to end the season and I'm so excited for next year.

  23. To clarify my point of position prior to my response. I grew up in Denton, child of a professor, been attending games since I was too little to remember, graduate that now lives over 350 miles away, but makes the trip for games at every opportunity. I agree with a lot of your points, but the above is just ridiculous. A student that has to be told what to do, how to do it and where to do it before they will attempt anything on their own is in for a rude awakening in the real world. You mean you knew it was raining, but didn't think to buy a poncho in advance and you wouldn't go to the stadium gift shop to see if they sold them? Wow. I guess you were told where Sack N Save is located and were presented with a shopping list prior to buying your groceries. Don't give me the "students can't afford it arguement either. Most of them will drop $4.95 on over priced beer every weekend at some bar, yet won't attend a game that is basically free and have the sense to stop by the stadium shop for a rain poncho. PM me you phone number and I'll give you a call next year before each game and bring you a poncho if needed. Do your professors call you in the morning to inform you of the weather forecast and to tell you what would be proper attire for the day? Don't blame the AD for the ban on umbrellas. Watch any game on television that has rain and name one where umbrellas are allowed. I can just imagine the nightmare of umbrellas opening in the row in front of me, behind me and then trying to open mine, much less, watch the game through all of that. By the way, 61 and rain is far from cold. Pristine conditions? Nope, but far from conditions indicative of leading to a bad case of pneumonia or shrunken penis. Guess I am starting to sound like an "old-timer," but these comments about they didn't do this or that for me is clearly indicative of the attitude of many of today's youth that are entering the workforce. I interview many people for positions within the organization that I'm am employed by and it is amazing how many have this attitude, lack of work ethic or a general understanding of personal responsibility. The athletic department and university has a long way to go in properly marketing the sports programs, but they are light years ahead of where they were during my days as a student. Every year, I took it upon myself to walk over to the athletic office and pick up a schedule so that I would know when the games were scheduled. I even travelled to many road games during my years as a student, and not once did the athletic department, or any other university department, call me to tell me attend, what to wear, where to purchase souveniers/concessions/etc... Nope, I did it on my own. I state this not to pat myself on the back, but to draw attention to how helpless you seem for a junior level student. Now, considering the level of improvement from the team this year and the amount of knowledge you have gained from attending this year, I hope to some day meet you in the future at a North Texas football game, rain or shine.

  25. This guy wasn't a student. He was one of Denton's homeless and apparently had drug problems. YET... our University felt the need to send public condolences and offer counseling to students for a guy who was apparently just taking advantage of the protests and squatting on our campus and shooting up in a tent right next to an academic building. Incredible.

  31. Some quick hitters - Roger Franklin is awesome. He's always in a good mood, and I dare say is the leader of the team. Very vocal on the court, especially on defense. Responds very well to whatever the coaches say. We got a great steal in him. Alzee Williams plays fantastic defense. It's one thing to see it on video, but in person he really stands out. Always moving his feet, almost never lets his guy get by him. Nearly always takes the best offensive player. Chris Jones is really impressive. I could see him growing more comfortable just in the last three days. Solid facilitator but can almost break down a defense at will when he needs to. Brandon Walton's family is great. Very funny when they would yell personal stuff at him to embarrass the kid as only family can do. Was very happy he played well for them. The team really communicates well on the floor. Alonzo Edwards looked like he got the crap kicked out of him in every game, but he was still battling down in the paint. I think he could be a boxer. If Hogans could put in more of his put backs, we'd be tough to beat as currently instituted. Was great to finally to meet SouthBendGreen and Shuke-D. Sorry about the dropping of your food again dude! JJ had the team come over to the NT fans after the game today and applaud/show us love. Extremely classy gesture. Give us a three weeks after December 18th, and we might have all pistons going full blast.

  41. I was just as disappointed as the rest of you to not hear Boomer all afternoon long. That was the kind of game I had imagined we could have while getting him ready to go again this summer. Boomer can certainly operate in the rain and has always done so in the past. It simply requires some additional time afterward to maintain, clean up and wipe down. In fact, the most important part of his firing procedure requires that the inside of the barrel is properly swabbed with a wet sponge rod to ensure that there are not any remaining embers left before reloading. I asked about his wearabouts last night and received contradicting information. So all I can say is that I apologize that this tradition wasn't part of such a memorable and historical night like last night. There still remains some kinks to work out that for sure. Just know we are working on a solution and that I will do my best to get it corrected by next August. I think 2012 is going to be a blast! Rick
