We get to tailgate and experience another Game Day at Apogee after being off for about a month. It seems that every game I'm more and more excited about that wonderful place. Obviously winning helps trememdously and I'm so thankful that our team is building a winning tradition at home. I have a good feeling that Saturday will be a very special day. Our menu is pretty basic this weekend...Fisher's Meat Market sausage and smoked cheese and hotdogs for the kids... anyone else have their menu planned?3 points

My stance all along on this has been that having a playoff game at Apogee will give us an opportunity to show to two groups of fanatical people (the parents, friends,& townsfolk of the respective teams) that North Texas has got it going on with their new facilities. And if the participating players have enough time to look around a little bit whilst preparing for the game, and come to the same conclusion......so much the better. At least we have now taken away one of the biggest slams used against us by recruiters at other schools.2 points

I've always had an idea of a giant wall in our stadium that contained the high school helmet of every player on the team. It would be a pretty cool attraction.2 points

As a long-time, long-suffering fan of the Mean Green, I've often wondered what it will take for the football program to reach a status that you'd expect of a school our size in a coveted TV market. We've been punching below our weight since I arrived on campus in 1987, though I feel somewhat optimistic these days with Apogee Stadium and Coach McCarney. I think it's possible for UNT to become a respectable mid-major that gets enough high-profile OOC victories to make big teams fear to schedule us. As I ponder what can be done to build the Mean Green, I've had a few off-the-wall ideas for ways that fans could have a direct impact on the program. I throw them out for consideration to see whether they're stupid. 1. Edit game video so that every player on the team has all of their best plays on YouTube, organized by player, right after each game. It promotes the player's accomplishments -- which don't get enough attention in the DFW media -- and the hope is that high school athletes considering UNT might see them. This is something that could be done on campus by RATV students. 2. Create a uniform fund so that every Pop Warner and YMCA league in Texas that wants a team called the Mean Green can get discounted or free uniforms with our shade of green and an official Mean Green logo. It's a minor bit of brand-building, but the kids who played as Mean Green will have a positive association with the real deal when they get older. What are your crazy ideas for promoting the program?1 point

I believe that chant was started by penn state in like 1947. They have been using it for awhile. We need to get our own thing. http://sportsfountainhead.blogspot.com/2009/02/origins-of-we-are-penn-state.html1 point

Yep - helluva game and CH almost had their butts handed to them. That in itself is not a bad thing - last year CH blew through the playoffs with huge numbers until they met Henderson in the state championship game - then they hit a little adversity and could not handle it. The game last night reminded me A LOT of the Henderson game last year - except this time this team found a way to win. I hope that helps them the rest of the way. Waco La Vega is a very good team; it was a battle of two 11 - 0 teams that fought hard. La Vega had a 4th and about 6 inches with just over a minute in the game, tied 20 - 20, and ole Sir Calvin and the rest of that defensive line stuffed them - I did not think they could do it. La Vega had successfully run wide on CH all night and I thought that was what they would do in this case (btw, there is another CH defensive lineman that deserves a good look by D-1 teams.....Colton Moorehead, DT/DE. This kid has a tremendous upside in my humble untrained opinion). Then, with just over a minute left and 3rd and whatever, 3 or 4 yards (La Vega called time out following first and second down with hopes of CH punting again out of the end zone - had punted once earlier out of the end zone for only 15 yards, so La Vega had big hopes of a short field), Tucker took the ball toward the left guard, then headed wide and went down the left sideline for, paper says, 93 yards.......and he starting cramping up at the 10 and was tackled as he fell into the end zone. Did I say "helluva game"? Final stats on the two CH running backs committed to UNT: Andrew Tucker - 21 carries for 164 yards - an almost 8-yard average; a 1-yard TD and the 93-Yard TD. He also caught the ball twice for 72 yards receiving. Rex Rollins - 3 carries for 8-yards. There is something going on with Rollins - played very little and that is unusual although it has happened for the 2nd week in a row. I don't know if he has an undisclosed injury or has chapped the coach or what - I will see what I can find out during the week. As for Sir Calvin Wallace - he and the rest of the CH line were stout - La Vega ran wide a lot, but not much yardage up the middle. Sir Calvin was a beast......he is starting to step up. My UNT hope-meter for this kid has gone up a lot over the past two games. Oh - the kid from Corsicana - somebody at UNT is dropping the ball - yeah, I know, booooooo - if they have not already taken a look at this kid. This is from the Corsicana paper this morning: "Yes, tailback Cameron Washington was at it again, rushing for a modern day playoff-record (for CHS) 322 yards on 39 carries, smashing his record from last week. He had four more touchdowns, giving him a school record 37 for the season. He passed Ketric Sanford’s tremendous senior year of 2,616 yards in 1995 for the second best single-season game in the modern era, doing it in the same number of games — 12. Washington has 2,663 yards now this season and needs 99 to break Sanford’s 1994 record of 2,761 yards in a season. Washington has rushed for more than 300 yards in consecutive playoff games, the first to do it once for Corsicana in the modern era, and now the first two do it twice." GMG1 point

I would recommend at least contacting Scott Conley about this young man. With those stats, he definitely deserves a look. I met a student at the airport last week that was boarding a flight to Dallas. She mentioned she was friends with a football player that was a freshman WR. I asked who, and she stated Zach Whitfield, who was recruited as a RB. If he has been moved, there's a spot, plus this young man, Washington, may be a candidate to be moved to WR. Either way, with the stats he has amassed this year, we should at least give him a look.1 point

There are a lot of variables on why players choose a particular college, and they don't all think exactly alike. Jordan Williams had offers to play for a million colleges, and he chose NT. Players are only allotted so many official visits, and if we can get a player on campus who otherwise would not be taking an official visit to UNT, who knows what might happen? Hayden Fry used to say something to the effect of, "If I can get them on campus, I can get them to sign to play at NT." This way, you're getting them on campus. At the very least, it's a way of potentially generating interest among players that might otherwise not be interested.1 point

Have great uniforms...I love the current green but I think a helmet is such an iconic part of the unform in my opinion. We NEED to have our eagle logo on the helmets...I don't understand RV's obsession of it saying "North Texas"...it won't help the average joe identify us any more or any less if it has it written out in my opinion. Speaking of uniforms I suggest getting with Nike and have different uniforms every so often..theres a reason why all these other schools do it and its to sell jerseys and I'd love to have an alternative uniform that was a black uniform with green lettering...that would be awesome looking. We need to reach out to other schools and districts of maybe partnering with them and inviting them to our athletic games. They said DISD had about a thousand kids for the womens game agains ORU and I think its a great think since its marketing to grade students who could be more prone to coming to UNT and have a sense of connection early on. Tho I'd suggest that we should do this for more men's games and even a football game. Maybe we can reach out to local and even global big whigs and invite them in being a part of UNT like maybe on a board of directors, or some kind of consultant. Those are things that don't get a lot of pub but can open a lot of avenues to things such as outreach, funding, etc. Other than this I don't know what else we can do other than the only thing that can solve just about all of our problems is to win win and win. We have a history and culture of losing and being irrelevant and the only way that changes if we win and win big. That will make more kids care about UNT, its sports teams and it will instill a sense of pride and that is how our fanbase will grow and the connection long after graduation will come back and benefit our school. How about more advertising on TV? Lets put more and more commercials out there even if there aren't any sports games on and market our school...that will definitely help in showing people that we do infact exist and that we're doing a lot of great things. The other day I was watching something (can't remember) and I randomly saw a couple of commercials for East Carolina University...I was like hmm I wonder if that is something UNT can do. Not sure how the TV deal works but I think whatever football and mens basketball games we can get on a local channel we need to make it happen. I think that could help immensely because it will give people access to our games that maybe don't or can't attend but still be connected and watch us. That could lead to more UNT awareness and more connection to people.1 point

I hate this move. Send the Brewers back to the AL. The Astros have been an NL team since '62 (and way beyond that if you count the fact that the Houston Buffs were a minor league farm team for the Cardinals). I think it sucks and I think Bud Selig sucks. As a fan, I'd rather they sent the Diamondbacks- a very young franchise- to the AL West and let the Astros move to the NL West so they can rekindle the rivalry with the Dodgers. Division games with the Rangers interests me very little, from an historical perspective.1 point

To me, it's one of the best things about baseball...I miss the days of no inter-league games and the World Series featured 2 teams who have not played each other the entire season and have had to play a different breed of baseball all season long. It truly tested the mettle of managers and players as they attempt to acclimate to the nuances of the NL or AL game. I'm no mathematician (or a mathemagician) but I don't think that could work quantitatively...and practically it would make travel schedules insane and really screw the fans as it would create Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays without home-team baseball.1 point

aside from the change of league... DH having to be implemented... this move sucks on the competition level... Houston is going to have problem selling tickets to fans who have seen Division Rivals go from the Cubs, Cards, Reds and Pirates to the Angels, Athletics, Mariners and Rangers... teams that Astros fans have never cared about.. now hopefully some sort of rivalry develops, but that will take 6 years minimum... considering how my Astros have already conceded the 2012 & 2013 seasons to rebuilding... Bud Selig has ruined my MLB experience for the 134134314th time0 points

Exactly who I had in mind because those pesky Owls would be in the NO's Bowl another (was it) 13 years later? Actually, our 1976 game with Texas was as much fun as the 1988 game (minues the bad calls) and we probably took our largest traveling crowd anywhere ever (outside DFW ) to DKR Memorial with what I believe Dallas Green said the Austin American Statesman wrote the next day was almost 20,000 North Texas fans. The calls were OK in that game as I recall but Earl Campbell's long run for a late 4'th quarter TD squelched our chances with a 17-14 loss.0 points

First Rule of Brainstorming is that there are no bad/stupid ideas...you may not think this after reading my post... 1. How about if we pay to host high school playoff games at Apogee Palace that will be on TV? You know, since nobody has paid us to have their games there... 2. I think the football team should really try to win a lot of games... Not just win them, but pound teams and win by 50... I think that would be a good Georgy... 3. We should allow drinking inside the stadium... that way everybody can keep the party going inside the stadium instead of drinking in the parking lot all game long... I was soooo put out by seeing the KA letters up on the hill by a full tent ALL GAME LONG. Maybe along with the free sunglasses, we have bring your favorite flask night or something like that.... Your most creative beer hat design... 4. The on campus spirit club should recruit the hottest girls on campus...like atleast 100 of them. Maybe even form an alliance with some university money funding such an alliance with the sororities on campus. Give them stuff like shirts and have them drive the campus spirit...INSIDE THE GAMES... 5. Give students a homework pass, or some minor grade pass, if they go to a game. So, at the end of the game when students are filing out, they hand them out. This gives them the option to turn this pass in in lieu of an assignment... Kind of like when you get a coupon for a free chalupa at Mavs games when they win and score 100+ points. If they get passes for all the home games, it turns into a test/major grade pass... 6. Hire the Denton Police department to shutdown tailgating after 5:00 outside the game. Make it illegal, like give them a ticket and/or haul them off to jail for either not going into the game or leaving... That's all from me for now...0 points

Jordan came to North Texas, because of the coaches, a great program, close to home, and his first visit to North Texas was at the Texas Tech game. And What did he enjoy most about... Having a college type of atmosphere, that he never got in HS. Im not saying its a bad thing, but people are over exaggerating this. Its great they get to play here and see the stadium but all theyll do is go to the locker rooms, play the game and leave. Theres not much touring for a playoff game, and getting to talk to the coaches..Its a playoff game, not a camp-1 points

Yes, it's a ripoff of the Marshall chant. I heard Penn State fans use it last week against Nebraska ....thought it would sound good with our double-name too. Besides, we need a new chant for the football games.-1 points

Having a HS playoff game at a college stadium isnt going to bring players here. How are you going to get a college experience with a HS crowd of 5k... Its not Cowboy Stadium, where people will come to see a game but mainly see the stadium. Players are gonna come to North Texas because they can win games, go to bowl games, and have a better opportunity, not bc of a stadium. The stadium is the bells and whistles, players dont wanna play in a dump (fouts) but they want to play in a college atmosphere (AQ type. You can have the nicest stadium in all of the NCAA but if you dont have the game day experience, it means nothing-4 points
