"One man's junk is another man's treasure." (Barney Frank?)3 points

Question #1: Is Denton the stupidest city in America? Five to six times per year cars would be parking at homes, to the pecuniary benefit of the homeowner. The city is making money from the people being in their city and spending money. We can laugh at OU and LSU and other college cities as rednecks and backwards. But, somehow, their cities and citizens find a way to accommodate hundreds of thousands of people a year willing to give them money six weekends or so each year. Question #2: Does Denton even want to be a city? I live in a city called Frisco, a city drilled out of farmland in the middle of nowhere, which 20 years ago had no major roads leading into it. From the time I've graduated from UNT until now, Frisco has about doubled the population of Denton...Denton, sitting right off of the heavily traveled I-35. Question #3: Does any city in America do less with more than Denton? Plenty of educated people around, not much in the way of office buildings or big corporate employers. Yes, I know recently some have been built. But, this is in a town with a university with one of the highest student enrollments in the state of Texas, and in the country. Are there any progressive business thinkers in Denton at all? FREEBIE: Marijuana legalization proponents say there are no long-term harmful effects from smoking dope. I counter by showing you the city of Denton and its citizenry as Exhibit 1A, the leading example of people's brains being damaged by long-term marijuana use.3 points

Last night I dreamt that I went to the upcoming UNT-UTA game. In my dream I walk in UTA's gym and instead of seeing bleacher seats I see seating that looks like what you would see in an old movie theater. You know, the gradual slope before everyone went to stadium seating 20 years ago. I sat down in one of the seats and noticed that the hardwood was actually elevated, kind of like a stage. I actually had to look-up form my seat to see the players on the court! I felt like I was watching a basket ball game at Billy Bob's or something. Near the stage was a giant pit if that even makes sense. I'm not sure what was in the pit. Anyways, on the other side of the court was some make shift stadium seating. But it was real small, like the seating you would see in a gym at an elementary school or something. It probably held only a couple hundred people or so. What a weird dream.2 points

The article in the USA Today was accompanied by a picture of Coach McCarney, on the sideline with shades, that mentioned his salary and the salary of the coach he replaced. Three other coaches were pictured, but I can't remember in what context. GMG2 points

As a long-time, long-suffering fan of the Mean Green, I've often wondered what it will take for the football program to reach a status that you'd expect of a school our size in a coveted TV market. We've been punching below our weight since I arrived on campus in 1987, though I feel somewhat optimistic these days with Apogee Stadium and Coach McCarney. I think it's possible for UNT to become a respectable mid-major that gets enough high-profile OOC victories to make big teams fear to schedule us. As I ponder what can be done to build the Mean Green, I've had a few off-the-wall ideas for ways that fans could have a direct impact on the program. I throw them out for consideration to see whether they're stupid. 1. Edit game video so that every player on the team has all of their best plays on YouTube, organized by player, right after each game. It promotes the player's accomplishments -- which don't get enough attention in the DFW media -- and the hope is that high school athletes considering UNT might see them. This is something that could be done on campus by RATV students. 2. Create a uniform fund so that every Pop Warner and YMCA league in Texas that wants a team called the Mean Green can get discounted or free uniforms with our shade of green and an official Mean Green logo. It's a minor bit of brand-building, but the kids who played as Mean Green will have a positive association with the real deal when they get older. What are your crazy ideas for promoting the program?1 point

Only at UNT do fans get pissed about losing to a mediocre UT team over 20 yrs ago.1 point

I doubt Coach McCarney will tip his hand as to Lance's status. This makes WKU have to prepare for Dunbar and Hamilton. We will know when Taggert knows. Go Lance. Go. GO MEAN GREEN1 point

Making the goalie's mother play LW on the 4th line on every time would make the game harder, but it wouldn't be good for hockey. I think you need to check the measurements of a basketball court and reconsider here. No, I don't want to see an all-star team hit dingers for 10 hours. No one's asking for anyone else to be substituted, they just want to see 9 people who can all hit. I admit it's dramatic, but there is nothing less dramatic about a good reliever trying to get out a good hitter already in the game. Pinch hitting can happen anyway ... this just means your last few innings in a close game take even longer. Nope. Didn't like it at all. The old aluminum bat is the other side of my argument and I really wish college baseball just used wood like everyone else. I love baseball for the same reason and have not been shy about expressing my love for it here. I know it is personal preference, bu having the pitcher hit at this point just seems outdated to me.1 point

Yes, it makes it harder because it is an asswhip. I don't want to amputate a limb of a really good track star just because it makes the race more compelling. I want to see the best people at each position doing what they are best at. Watching a pitcher hit is not enjoyable and is a waste of at least 4 outs per game. Most managers already kill another 2-3 per game sacrificing without understanding probability and get applauded for playing NL-style ball, so why take away even more outs in a game that doesn't have that many? Football, basketball and hockey all evolved their rules and people moved on. This is like putting the 25 foot 2 point jumper on a pedestal for on reason. Move on. I was born in Atlanta and grew up watching my siblings cheer for some great Braves teams, but I still always thought the DH was more exciting. Just a personal thing, I guess.1 point

A good PG takes what the defense gives them. They were manned up against Jones and very rarely brought help. When they did, it's not like guys were filling the lane for open passes. Jones took what they gave him, and took a lot. Calling Jones a ball hog is shows a really low basketball IQ. Watch the damn game! This is the same guy that scored 4 points against a NAIA school and had 8 assists. Seriously, if he were a ball hog, he would have put up 30 shots against that 1st grader from St. Gregory's that was guarding him. Basketball ignorance level at an all time high on here today.1 point

Don't agree with you here. We forced a ton of mistakes and eventually adjusted to the high screen they ran so well early on in the game with the post. We rebounded pretty well as well. We lost some defensive intensity but part of that was Tech increasing the pressure which A. will happen in games and B. we showed inexperience in not handling. The positives were, we battled back from that and made it a game, and had a chance to win. My concerns with the team are shooters - We don't really have one at this point. Is that player on the roster? Low post game - weak although Edwards showed some touch down low at times. Perhaps he''ll get it together. He hasn't played many minutes in a long while. We might be better as a team like Illinois in the late 80's or Tulsa in the early 00's where you have so much talent, length and athletic ability you just try to out run and gun people.1 point

Just wait until these greedy bastards separate from the NCAA and create their own March Madness and Super College World Series...seriously, these two quintiessential collegiate sporting events will get absolutely abused by the greed to the point that we all won't even recognize them in the future. These big AQ schools (not Baylor or TCU) are eventually going to get out of this sharing business alltogether. Look at the Longhorn Network. ESPN will eventually force Texas to give them coverage to support the millions that they get to keep for themselves. Playing a home game against ULM or UTSA ain't gonna do it for ESPN. Thta's why they EXPECTED at least one conference game a year to start on that stupid network. That ain't gonna for away--its just going to get worse. Once you consider this, then consider that ESPN ahs talked to Ohio State about doing this for their school, too. When does it get to Florida, Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma, Michigan, USC, etc... For UNT, I have come to realize that it has now almost become for me just about being a clean and academically-proud university that our student-athletes can excel at. If we are in the SBC in 2030, but we never run into various infractions from the NCAA that look like what we have seen over the last 30 years, I will be ok with it. I know that I personally won't ever accept an illegally-paid athlete at UNT, an athletic dept that commits academic fraud to get better athletes, and I will never go back to a UNT game if it ever comes out that a coach and AD knowingly looked the other way at murder or rape being committed by anyone associated with the program.1 point

I like the idea, but then I got to thinking and remembered that the Rangers let that cheer spread organically for 2/3rds of the season before they pushed it on us. Last night taught me a lesson: let go and let the students drive the cheers and what we yell. They've got this and they should be the pulse of the crowd. This may not seem like much, but I'm a jackass who wore spandex to the tournament title game last year. I have complete faith in the student body to pull this off without AD help unless they ask for it. I don't think the AD prints the cheat sheets at most basketball schools, so why should we be different? Those kids stepped up last night and I'd love to see what a loosely organized, energetic flock of college kids are capable of before we step in.1 point

It's not just pitchin', it's Tyson chandler and the flexibility to sign Harrington and... to (not) trade for Chris Paul later when NO gives up, but they will tease us with $30M in expiring contracts next year. Look out free-agency summer 2011 (/wanking motion) Let's keep the focus on the basketball team that makes me happy. This is great news.1 point
