Remember back in the mid-aughts when the Cowboys had this scrappy Romo kid and a coach named Bill Parcells? And Parcells kept insisting he saw giant red flags in practice about this guy that had to be fixed before he put him on the field? Now, I'm hazy, but didn't he come in and produce results while continuing to do some of the things that irritated his coach? Wasn't Parcells beaten up to high hell despite his skins on the wall and the benefit of hind-sight to make it look like he had a point? Wasn't there another QB on the roster Parcells had a previous relationship with? Was he the best QB on the roster? Should he have been developed more carefully and the final bad habits ironed out? Has this approach held him back in his career today? I was no big fan of Parcells, but looking back, his point is a lot more obvious to me now than it was then. It's crazy, but maybe coaches do know best and see things we miss while we look for guys to throw TDs.3 points

First, why does someone from Boise State know what CUSA is thinking? That makes no sense what so ever. I would like to know the context in which he said it as I don't think that would be a normal part of the breifing about BSU's board approving him to search for a new conference. Second, UTEP would totally flip out - their relationship with NMSU is similar to La Tech and La-Mo.2 points

I am truly disappointed in Craig Thompson. He cries about the Big East taking his teams after what he's done to the WAC. They're only taking two, not the entire conference as he did. Now he's considering taking two more so that he can have ten before any other moves. The MWC is the primary beneficiary of a three team alliance. He doesn't have 12 teams for a conference playoff and has little to choose from to try to garner that many. So he tries to form a 36 or whatever team league to give his members some sort of access to the top BCS bowls. Why would the Big East even consider that when they have an automatic bid and access to any of the teams in the other two leagues? Then consider Conference USA. They have a contract for their championship game from when the conference consisted of 12 members. They will now be reduced to nine but they have several strong candidates from among the Sun Belt and the WAC and could quickly return to 12 again and fulfill their contract. With no agreement that the winner is guaranteed a berth in bowl championship, what's the incentive for CUSA? This alliance thing seemed doomed from the start and why did Commissioner Thompson try to sell it? Was he looking to take over all three leagues?2 points

The first thing that sports networks look at is the TV homes served. It allows them to sell to advertisers; the more viewers, the more buyers, the better their rate. There is no single university that can deliver the DFW market because it is so large and diverse. North Texas has more than 200,000 living alumni. Approximately half are located in the Metroplex. The Mountain West and CUSA can garner a better TV package if they have large student and alumni bases in major markets. If we are competitive we can garner many more viewers than the only team in a small/medium market. Ten percent of the Dallas-Fort Worth market is greater than the entire Nashville market (and there are about fifty markets smaller than Nashville). Believe me, we will add presence to the DFW market. As to to your question about our helping the Sun Belt TV package...probably very little, if at all. The reason is Cox and Charter do not broadcast into this area. There is a little revenue generated by those few games that are picked up by Channel 21 and broadcast into the area. It's also possible that ESPN3 generates some income from our presence. We should definitely be more advantageous for CUSA and the MWC.2 points

I wonder about our soon departing Wright Waters when he opined that Belt schools would stay loyal to the Belt. My guess is that any Belt school maybe with one exception would jump at the chance to go CUSA . This conference realignment is moving very quickly and I doubt even adding schools to the Belt would help a lot. The Belt will survive even if they lose multiple teams. The realignment has moved down to the MWC and CUSA level, nothing much is going to happen to conferences below that until those decisions are made. My guess would be that the Belt will ultimately lose several teams then they will fill those places with WAC or FC teams. There is no reason for the Belt to move before it is known how the MWC and CUSA shake out. No teams with perceived other options are going to jump to the Belt while there is a chance for their inclusion in a higher rated league. Likewise, the teams that would be open to Belt membership now will still be there.2 points

CUSA is going to walk away from Florida and DFW so they can be strong in Memphis and Birmingham !! Not going to happen. Do we bring the DFW market like SMU did....yes. You will never have a presence n a market if u r not n it !! CUSA west .. UNT , UTEP, RICE, TULSA, La TECH, Memphis..revenue is from TV and filling the stadiums!!!! Create regional competition were fans can travel to the games and save on travel expense ! We could send our band to all of these locations.2 points

You two seem like good guys, but you have to understand that there are a lot of d bags who are associated with SMU that think thier shit doesn't stink, just because they have money. When we played you guys here, "Cash beats trash" was written on a car. Last season when I stopped by the Tom Thumb on Lovers to pick up some tailgating items before a game, one of your "finer" fans made some smart ass comment that nearly got him a freezer door implanted on his face. You two don't seem to be like the two examples above, and I applaud that. But please understand we've seen far too many on our boards that are the opposite of you.2 points

Vito is stuck in a job he doesn't like working with an NT administrative staff that rather he not be here, not a good situation. IMO, he caused a lot of his problems with the way he reported the alleged discrimination allegations at NT. This is something an athletic staff is not likely to quickly forget. Most seem to laud Vito for his honest reporting and tell it like it is approach. The problem is that he reporting none of the bad stuff that was going on when Dickey was here and waited for Dodge to be gone before blasting him. Beat writers have to walk a fine line and it is a tough job. Vito works hard and puts out a lot of material and I give him credit. I don't think anyone faults him for his sports opinions or expects him to be a cheerleader. My problem with Vito has nothing to with his performance, it is just that his opinions and writing is almost the only outside reporting NT receives. He is the main NT source for the DRC, DMN, Texas Football as well as other publications and has been for years. He is a good reporter working under the circumstances he has, but frankly he is just overexposed here and I think his lack of enthusiasm for the job shows.2 points

Outside of size, give me a stadium that can compete with Apogee? Seriously? Have you been to OU? Their stadium is huge, but not nearly as nice. Size alone doesn't make for top tier facilities. I've been to the Rose Bowl, Autzen, Sun Devil Stadium, Qualcomm on a very regular basis, Washington Stadium, Kyle Field, Royal, and a number of other "premiere" venues- I'd put Apogee pound or pound against any of them. Houston and UCF is going to the Big East, Cinci has been twice to BCS games after building themselves up in C-USA prior to Big East, TCU built strong in C-USA prior to Mountain West and now to the Big 12. So, my statement is not overblown. We have a lot to offer any conference from a facilities standpoint, academic reputation and market footprint, even if we only get a moderate amount of DFW paying attention. Our one liability is butts in the seat for all sports. The apathy towards football is understandable, however, hoops is inexcusable. If we had respectable crowds at all events, we'd be able to write our ticket to a non-AQ affiliation of our choice. There's a difference between unrealistic expectation and vision. Unrealistic green colored glasses is expecting our team to not make idiotic mistakes while being outgunned from a talent standpoint. Knowing the assets that you have and understanding how they can entice new conference affiliations is vision.2 points

Brett Vito, you just lost a listener! Also, we're knocking Vito for being arrogant and condescending while praising T-Mac in the same thread?2 points

I have quit reading Vito. I rarely disagree with his general points, and mere disagreement would not stop me from reading him anyway. But he tends to make his points in a manner that is indeed arrogant, condescending, and penile.2 points

This is the vast conspiracy that is North Texas football: We only hire coaches that purposefully set their own careers aside and deliberately and intentionally lose games. Can someone provide me motive for why any coach would do that? These coaches, the offensive coaches only, correct, have "mailed it in (I read that QUIT)" on their family, their players, their team, without regard to their future careers and incomes? C'mon Fake...you cannot believe that, can you? I don't. And just to clarify, I do not blindly follow everything these guys are doing. But for now, I will trust the coaches, the players, the department are all doing what they believe to best for the program, are giving everything they have to improve its future and want (almost as badly as we do, I am sure) to win. Sometimes you aren't as big, as fast, as good....not sure if that is the case here, but it may have something to do with it. Reality says we haven't been very good for a VERY long time, even against teams we THINK we should be better than....a VERY long time. That is not to fault a single player on this team. I am proud of every guy on this team. I think this coach and this staff can move us forward, and one can argue it is happening right in front of our eyes. Get healed, get better and FINISH! You have to throw in that Osborn then went JUCO, led the team to a 9-1 record while completing more than 61% of his passes. Otherwise...yeah, continuing to go with McNulty looks like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Osborn and Cooper Jones are the most highly touted of the bunch. You hope they get an opportunity.1 point

I just see the whole thing as similar to Fouts vs. Apogee: move out to move up. Yeah, who knows when we'll figure out Tulsa, but I would take our chances against Memphis, Tulane and UAB year and consider ourselves lame to write down Rice and UTEP as unwinnable. I mean, compare travel to Memphis to what Hank and JubJub were talking about from Jonesboro; two cross country bus trips could be eliminated from each away game. And, although AkStateFan seems like a nice enough fellow, I just have no desire to see their team, which seems (at least) borderline dirty, or their fans, in Denton or there. And, how many can answer where Monroe, Louisiana really is? Why is one of the Florida teams Atlantic and the other International. In a way, I just kinda wish, being a geographer, I could be more locationally tolerant.1 point

Definitely didnt mean to sound arrogant. I think down the line NT could compete with the top of CUSA, but I was talking about the next year or two. Its a bigger step up than people think. Marshall won more games from 1991-2001 than any team on the planet, including 7 mac titles and a couple 1aa national championships. This is year six in Cusa for us, and our best year was 7-6. We are finally back to competitve this year, but it took a while to get to that level.1 point

Exactly. I'm not saying that Vito is wrong. It's just that I don't want to be reminded of the last six years ad nauseum. Look at the first five questions posed. That pretty much says it for me so why continue doing it? Elevating DD to a greatness continually actually has the opposite effect on me. And, is there a soul here that does not know of Dodge's sorry record? Is there anyone that enjoys being constantly reminded of it? For pete's sake Brett, base your comparisons on the beginning of Coach Mac's era. We all know that he didn't start with a load of talent. An occasional reference to bygone eras is fine but I certainly don't enjoy a steady diet to the tune that I've turned you off.1 point

It seems to me much of the Anti Vito sentiment comes down to the fact that he isn't a cheerleader for the department. This is really confusing to me since Tim MacMahon is still beloved and he never pulled any punches either. In fact, he was much more confrontational in my opinion. In the end, is Vito a victim of the fact he has covered a lot of losing seasons? Probably.1 point

For once we need to let go of what SMU is doing. If we were in a drivers seat compared to SMU I wouldn't expect us to act any different than what SMU is acting now(which I see absolutely nothing wrong with). We are where we are because it has been decades of our own doing. We don't need SMU and SMU doesn't need us. Let both schools focus on OUR tasks at hand and the world will be a better place.1 point

That's about the response I would expect out of someone who cannot refute one part of the argument being presented.1 point

I can't blame you for feeling that way. There have been, are, and likely always will be those that don't see the value in local competition. SMU is no exception. If possible, please don't judge me or Comet by some predetermined standard.1 point

If a coaching staff lets the angry mob determine playing time decisions, they shouldn't be coaching. How many of us are running their practices, calling their plays, and have 30 years of college football coaching experience? Didn't we all prepare ourselves for a 4 or 5 win season? I personally predicted 5 wins. Predictions are worth nothing, I know...other than maybe setting our expectations coming in. We are all very disappointed with some of the games this year, guys(especially DT's) leaving the team, and this latest round of realignment not involving us... We are ALL pissed. I get it. This fanbase thinking they can make better decisions than this experienced coaching staff is absolutely laughable. I seriously don't know why I keep letting these stupid threads draw me offsides... but here I am again. I can't express to you how silly these threads look. I guess this is just explained as we don't have much good news lately with all that is going on with us and around us. Here's to Meaner, Greener Pastures in the near future. Maybe this is just the way you guys deal with disappointment. I don't know. Seems pretty silly to me...1 point
-
Beware logic, it has a tendency to irritate the irrational thought process that comes with expecting a team that could count its wins on one hand over the last three years to make a bowl game this year citing "we should elevate our expectations because we're playing Sun Belt talent". Your post will suffer the consequences.1 point

Good for Houston, as they have earned the right, IMHO,to move up to an AQ league, but SMU deserves to be in the Lone Star Conference.1 point
-
Hopefully this turns out well for us, but please allow me to barf at the thought of SMU "deserving" or "earning" this invitation to an AQ conference. Please. Their own players publicly lament the complete lack of fan/community support that they have. I just don't understand continuing to turn over the DFW market to a school that has, both recently and historically, never been able to garner legitimate fan support worthy of what is expected of an AQ conference school, despite the fact that they've been given every opportunity and advantage. Should we not move on and up from this, it will be a nut kick to end all nut kicks.1 point
